TO: Commanding General 2nd Infantry Division

For the period 1-31 January the Regiment plus attached Netherlands Battalion

continued ~he mission of defending a sector of Line Missouri~ The defense was

continued with two battalions on the MLR and two battalions in reserve. One

· reserve battalion was under operational control of Division for counterattack

purposes. Frontline and reserve •battalions vrere rotated on a t;.ro week cycle.

The conduct of our defense developed a pattern of the following type actions:

(1). Reconnaisance was continued d~y and night to maintain contact ~~d

procure intelligence information. Daylight ground reconn~isance missions usually

· were sq~d size groups interspersed across the front. Enemy observation dominated

the entire section, thus groups had to be small. Night reconnaisance patrols

were_platoon size. The reason being to provide sufficient strength to prevent

being trapped by enemy ambushes. Air reconnaisance by both liason carrying our

air observer and mosquito planes controlled through our S-3 (air), and air

liason officer was fully utilized to procure information of enemy weapons and •

activities beyond capabilities of ground reconnaisance.

The tactical operation developed a regular pattern.· Ground and air recon-

naisance 'means were actively employed to maintain contact with the enemy and

procure. intelligence information. Enemy reconnaisance was by passive means.

Their observation dominated the entire section ther~y permitting them to see

without movement and our patrols kept them informed as to our activity. This

enabled the enemy to operate their OP 1 s and defend from bunkers and trenches

located on key terrain features. )

The enemy plan for improving and reinforcing his OPLand OP's was counterd by:

(1). Use of.57 and 75 recoiless weapons, 155 and 811 guns against bunker

positions.

and gun emplacements in defilade and beyond capabilities of ground weapons.

(4) • Added range for employment of supporting weapons was achieved by

moving 4.2 mortars and a limited amount of artillery to defilade firing positions

in immediate rear of }~ for special missions and li~ited periods.

These techniques added to active and aggressive ground patrols served to

· . minimize tpe enemy use of superior observation and dominant terrain forward of

our MLR.

The operation. of a Replacement School has proved wo~th while in that '~e

are assured replacements are fully equipped, indoctrinated and refreshed on

combat training prior to their joining a unit on the line.

The operation of a school by Division to train Squad Leaders and Platoon

Leaders.vro.sa step forward which will materially strengthen a major weakness

_the shortage of qualified ~11 unit leaders. Attrition of such leaders through

combat losses and rotation is. one for major consideration on all levels.

Instruction and continued emphasis on supply economy techniques has re

sulted in appreciable improvement with respect to the supply situation within

the Regiment. More aggressive activity by supply services has been indicated

by a general improvement in ordnance and quartermaster issues. The plan for

sizing and distributing the insulated boots was highly sucessful. The universal

report from· all.units on the insulated boots indicates it is a major advancement

in·footwear. Deficiency noted are weakness of eyelets and hooks causing a break

or tear on lacing assembly.

A limited. number of armored vests were received and were used by men on

patrols. The initial reaction was that the things weren't worth their added

weight. Immediate experiences have nullified this viewpoint. More extensive

. use of armored vests will be made by future patrrols and more vital information

will be available in the succeeding report. This may develope into a subject

of major significance.
