Unit Structure
Each unit in myPerspectives offers a student-centered unit structure that enables students to develop the skills and independence needed for college and career success.
As your class moves through the unit structure, your role will shift from teaching to facilitating to advising and assessing as you focus on teaching important skills and exploring unit topics that build student insight, content knowledge, and literacy.
The unit structure consists of six sections. The teacher’s role during Small-Group Learning is to serve as a facilitator and let students learn in a collaborative way from each other. This allows them to take ownership of their own learning.

What is Small‐Group Learning?
Small-group learning allows students to develop problem-solving, presentational, interpersonal, and communication skills-all beneficial skills for life outside the classroom.
In the Small-Group Learning section, students work collaboratively in small groups to continue broadening their perspectives on the unit topic.
Students are exposed to texts and media selections that provide new insights into the Essential Question and Unit Concepts.
Teachers facilitate and encourage collaboration as students work in small groups. This section is followed by a Performance Task with a Speaking and Listening focus to help students continue to prepare for the Performance-Based Assessment.

Forming Groups
Students participating in group work is a key ingredient in student learning!
In small groups, students can verbalize their ideas, listen to one another, collaborate, and learn from each other-an integral part of the myPerspectives unit structure.
Teachers can arrange students in small groups in many different ways.
Now, let’s learn how to form groups in your classroom.

Facilitating Small Groups
Effective Small-Group Learning instruction begins with the turquoise Overview pages in your Teacher’s Edition.
First, review the Essential Question and Small-Group Learning Strategies with your students. As students work through the Small-Group Learning section, they will develop strategies to work in small-group settings. These strategies include
prepare,
participate fully,
support others, and
clarify.
Then, discuss the selections and Performance Task. Remind students how to work as a team and make a schedule for completing the assigned tasks.
