Hi, teachers! Are you ready to learn about small-group instruction? Today, we’ll explore the Small-Group Learning section of the myPerspectives™ unit structure. I’ll share some savvy tips on how you can form and facilitate small groups. Let’s get started!

Unit Structure

myPerspectives offers a student-centered unit structure that consists of six parts. The teacher’s role during Small-Group Learning is to serve as a facilitator as opposed to lecturer and let students learn in a collaborative way from each other. This approach allows them to take ownership of their own learning. And knowing when to transition from whole-class learning to small groups is easy with your Teacher’s Edition in hand. The Small-Group Learning pages are in turquoise and are labeled Facilitating to keep you on track.

What is Small-Group Learning?

Let’s talk about what happens during Small-Group Learning. You’ll begin this part of the unit by discussing Small-Group Learning Strategies and the genre selections. The students will then discuss how to work as a team before preparing to read. After that, you’ll introduce them to the texts, Concept Vocabulary, and First Read strategies before facilitating the small groups. As students read the selections in their small groups, they’ll complete literacy routines to help them become confident and independent readers, writers, and learners. Small-Group Learning ends with a Performance Task. This task will help students prepare for the unit Performance-Based Assessment by guiding them through the writing process.
