PCC XL Pathway Success Coach for International Students Job Description 20 hours per week at $19.00/hour, max per year 900 hours Filing deadline: June 28 th , 2014. Tentative start date: early July, 2014. XL Success Coaches (SCs) are paraprofessional staff members for the PCC XL Pathways first-year experience program. They will work within the Divisions of Student Learning Services and the Teaching and Learning Center and will be directed and supervised by the Counseling/Case Management Team leader. Success Coaches assist program students with moving through one of the most transformative years of their lives—their first year of success of college. The emphasis is on supporting the student’s adjustment to the academic and social expectations and culture of college life and not on the provision of academic or career counseling. Maturity, flexibility, enthusiasm, and a strong work ethic are prerequisites for this position. Successful SCs are also knowledgeable of and sensitive to not only the needs of a diverse and academically underprepared student population, but are also attuned to how they may be received by members of this population. Thus, SCs are adept at developing interpersonal relationships with and between students with this background. The successful SC possesses strong communication and leadership skills and a positive view of the community college and its staff. They conduct themselves in a professional manner and model positive behavior consistent with the mission of the PCC Pathways program. They are also able to work well with diverse instructional and counseling professors and other college staff members. Time commitment: These are temporary positions based on grant funding and successful annual evaluations. The minimal commitment time is one year. Continuing on to the next year will be dependent upon a positive evaluation. SCs will work 20 hours per week, a maximum of 8 hours in one work day. These positions will begin with training mid to late July in preparation for our summer bridge program, Math Jam. Math Jam is expected to begin either the end of July or the first week of August and continue over a four-week period to end just before the fall term begins. The 2014/2015 school year will end early May, 2015, unless campus administration makes other plans. The work to review the year and prepare in earnest for the following school year will begin at the conclusion of the spring term. Examples of Duties: 1. Closely monitor and communicate consistently with 150+ International Students in the PCC XL Pathway program during the fall and spring semester. Communication will be primarily via face-to-face interactions, but also via phone, email, texting and Internet as necessary. 2. Provide guidance for F1 students to ensure compliance with federal and college regulations to maintain status. 3. Act as an informed referral source throughout the academic year, including accompanying students to various resources as needed. Support students in acquiring and understanding regular course status reports. 1

4. Collaborate with assigned College 1 professors following their lead in the classroom. 5. Participate in /lead program seminars, workshops and other presentations in collaboration with

counseling faculty. 6. Assist International students with housing, transportation, banking, driver’s license and

insurance needs. 7. Guide/collaborate with students to follow-through on tasks in order to benefit from the

resources and their professors. 8. Participate in /lead program seminars, workshops and other presentations. 9. Coach students in effective time management, study skills and exam preparation. 10. Maintain detailed student contact logs in the database. 11. Collaborate with fellow Success coaches to develop supplemental projects and initiate

appropriate individual projects based on student and program needs. 12. Attend regular meetings and training sessions. 13. Perform appropriate clerical duties as necessary and support the activities of the PCC FYE

Pathway program as needed. 14. Please note, this position does NOT provide academic counseling, rather helps students pursue

and follow through on their plans with counselors along with the duties listed above. Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree. Course work in psychology, social work, human development, counseling, group dynamics and guidance is essential. If candidate does not have a degree in the above disciplines, they should have at least two years of supervised experience working directly with students in a college setting that involves the following types of recent experience: Supervised peer mentoring/advising, resident assistant, crisis/hotline counseling. Please do not apply if you do not have training in or will not be concurrently enrolled in a program that provides case management skills. We do not need experience with strictly information sharing or administrative/clerical duties in student service settings. The successful candidate also has time availability that supports the program needs. Knowledge and Abilities:

1. Excellent communications skills: listening, responding, presenting, handling and resolving conflict.

2. Understand the needs of and have experience working with recent urban high school graduates who are predominantly underprepared for college demands.

3. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff. Ability to work with committees and to plan workshops.

4. Ability to work collaboratively with faculty. 5. Capacity for discretion, diplomacy and confidentiality. 6. Demonstrated record of leadership, maturity and academic excellence. 7. Resourcefulness. 8. Ability to learn PCC’s processes, policies and support systems and website tools. 9. Knowledge of research techniques.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates enrolled in their second year in a graduate program in relevant majors such as psychology, counseling, human development, social work or the equivalent with experience serving international students. Being enrolled in a program that provides training in

counseling skills is essential in working with this population given their needs. Experience making group presentations for this age group. Experience working in a team. Knowledge of the community college system and its mission.
