In IT Support and Remote Systems Management, Remote control isusually the most heavily used item of infrastructure software. Itdemands very high reliability and ease of use. Remote control has tobe easy to deploy, very robust, and economical on network bandwidth.Remote Control is also a particularly sensitive activity, demanding highlevels of security from both corporate and personal privacyperspectives. With today’s increased focus on accountability, it isimportant that Remote control sessions can be audited.

PC-Duo Express and PC-Duo Enterprise: Overview

PC-Duo Remote Control comes in two flavours – Express and Enterprise. Express mode uses peer-to-peer connectionsbetween Masters and Hosts – where Hosts are the Remote supported PCs. In Enterprise mode, connections can also bemade via one or more distributed Gateways, and Gateways are responsible for connection management, security, sessionactivity logging, and much else. The Gateway is also key to enabling PC-Duo Masters to support Remote Hosts outside thelocal network, as follows.

Firewall and Internet Friendly

The Host periodically reports its status to one or more Gateways. Any Masterwith appropriate authorisation can establish a connection to that Host via theGateway. A Host can be configured to stay in contact with a Gateway, even if it ismoved outside the Gateway’s domain. This Remote connection can traversefirewalls and NAT-devices without any special port or network configuration. Thisenables support staff to reach PCs at home, in hotel rooms or in WiFi hotspotswithout any extra effort.

• Flexible keyboard mapping –standard and custom keycombinations.

• Cycling Monitor automaticallyconnects to each Host in a group ofHosts, according to a pre definedsequence.

Security throughAuthentication and Encryption

• PC-Duo uses Windowsauthentication as default, but can beconfigured to use alternativeusername and password to grantaccess to a Host. Where a Host isunable to access the domaincontroller to verify the identity of theMaster, it can authenticate via aGateway using a 16byte passwordthat is automatically established bythe Host and Gateway.

• A high level of granularity of accesscontrol can be applied at the Hostby its own local settings, and theseare combined in an Enterpriseinstallation with configurationsettings defined at the Gatewaysfor Groups of Hosts. Thisarrangement is very powerful andflexible, but still easy to manage.An individual Host’s settings can bereviewed and edited via a Gatewaywith which it is registered.

• Hosts and Masters can beconfigured to use SSL toauthenticate the identity of theGateway they are connecting to,maximising security andminimising/eliminating fire wallsetup requirements.

• PC-Duo uses 256 bit AES withSHA-1 hashing as default. Forconnections via the Gateway thereare other options available,including 192 and 128bit AES withSHA-1, and 3DES with SHA-1.

PC-Duo Enterprise Gateway

Once a Master is connected to aGateway, as illustrated, theGateway’s database of registeredHosts is accessed through theGateway Hosts tab in the Masterstation.

The Host Properties dialogsupports review and edit ofaddress, connection and securityinformation.

PC-Duo Administrator accountsare required for many of theconfiguration functions availableon Gateways.

Concurrent Screen Recording

A boost for audit and security.PC-Duo’s screen recording has beendeveloped to a high level of efficiency,driven by specialist application in callcenter monitoring.

Management of recording activity iscentrally controlled at the Gatewaysresponsible for the Hosts concerned.

It is not necessary to establish aremote control session to a Hostbefore recording can begin. Simplyuse the Gateway dialogs to selectHosts and define recording periods.

• Capture all activity on remote computer screen with High Fidelity screenrecording.

• Record simultaneous remote control sessions with no impact on bandwidthconsumption.

• Ultra compact recording file sizes means you can turn on continuous recording(24x7) for less than 1GB a day storage space.

• The playback control includes three speed Fast Forward, Pause and Play, andan Edit function.

• Playback can be invoked from inside the Master’s list of available recordings, orcan be played independently from a file that is saved from inside the Masterconsole to a convenient location – or emailed to a colleague for review.
