“Progress with a Purpose”

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) brings together people from all over the world from different backgrounds and perspectives, but our uniting goal is one and the same: to build upon the tourism industry’s collective strengths and bring about actionable change for the better. The definition of progress, however, varies greatly. Our industry heavily focuses on financial profitability and successful businesses, but this kind of progress cannot be infinitely sustained without considering our environmental, cultural, and social assets. It is clear that tourism, sustainability, and social responsibility are intrinsically linked and should thus be considered the ultimate purpose for all travel and tourism stakeholders.

In alignment with the PATA Annual Summit 2019’s theme of ‘Progress with a Purpose,’ the PATA Youth Symposium aims to empower youth to be the architects of their own future, as well as that of the travel and tourism industry in the Asia Pacific region. The symposium encourages participants to learn from industry leaders who set out to not just improve their bottom line, but also contribute towards a sustainable and responsible future.

Maja Pak is the Managing Director of the Slovenian Tourist Board, which she helped to establish in 1996. Since then, she has helped Slovenia to transform from a nice country in the heart of Europe to the world’s first green destination and a leader in sustainable tourism. Maja is dedicated to the development and promotion of the country through the “I feel Slovenia” brand as a green boutique destination for 5-star experiences and has gained unanimous support among each and every stakeholder in Slovene tourism towards this commitment. Her time with the Slovenian Tourist Board has been part of an awe-inspiring journey of learning and if her lessons could be summed up in a single sentence, it would be that “change is the only constant, so we need to embrace it and collaborate.”

Slovenian Tourist Board is the organisation responsible for marketing Slovenia to the world as a tourist destination – green boutique destination for 5-star experiences. The major asset behind its mission is the I feel Slovenia brand, which tells the story of the green boutiqueness of Slovenia, the only European country sitting at the crossroads of the Alps and the Mediterranean, between Karst and the Great Pannonian Plain. The “Slovenian green”– which is in the core of Slovenian experience – speaks of unspoiled nature and its focus on maintaining it that way.
