~ Welcome ~ It is my unmistakable honor as Artistic Manager to welcome you to the 52nd season of Patio Playhouse and Patio Plays in the Park.

This season we are bringing you shows that explore family and finding where you belong. Jesus Christ Superstar is an excellent opening to this exploration. The last days of Jesus, told from the perspective of Judas Iscariot, this musical examines the relationships between Jesus and his disciples and Mary Magdalene as they delve into whether there was any other way the story could end. How inevitable was Judas’ betrayal and how does that affect Jesus’ relationships with Judas and everyone else?

Patio Playhouse has been providing affordable theater and performance opportunities to the people of Escondido

and all of North County for over 50 years, and we continue to grow each year. Our youth program has long provided a nurturing environment for kids and teens to explore the theater arts, free of charge.

We are so excited that you have joined us today and we entreat you to continue to join us for the rest of the year. We follow Jesus Christ Superstar with Annie and In the Heights at Kit Carson Amphitheater. If you wish to join the Patio Family and become involved with Patio Playhouse, please speak to any of our ushers or visit our website at www.patioplayhouse.com.

Thank you so much for your patronage!

Matt FitzGerald Artistic Manager

~ Director’s Note ~ Thank you for attending this evening's performance of Jesus Christ Superstar and sharing one of my most precious theatrical dreams! I fell in love with this rock musical in 1970, when I purchased the first released recording on vinyl LP. Having grown up in New York, I was privileged to attend many Broadway productions of the show over the years. Some were spectacular, some were odd, but all of them touched my heart.

Whether or not you are a believer, you can still relate to the story of Jesus' last days through the eyes of his friend and betrayer, Judas. Jesus taught love, forgiveness, and acceptance in an environment controlled by power-hungry oppressors—a world where fear made many lovers of Jesus turn against him. Not too unlike the world we live in now, where hatred and divisiveness permeate almost every area of the globe, where the lesson of 'love thy neighbor' just gets

drowned out! One of the songs that is not on my original album states exactly how I feel today: 'Could We Start Again Please?' I point this out in the hope that when you leave the theater tonight, you allow yourself to reflect upon the similarities and the differences between then and now.

This journey has been a labor of love for me, and would not have been possible without my most amazing production team, the most talented cast, my loving and supportive husband Rick, and my reluctantly supportive son Mark! It would do my heart proud to have you leave the park humming any one of the familiar songs you hear, like 'I Don't Know How To Love Him,' or 'Hosanna,' or 'What's The Buzz,' or 'Herod's Song,' or 'Superstar'!
