1.1 Introduction to Literature Online (LION) on the ProQuest Platform

Welcome to this learning module introducing Literature Online (henceforth mentioned as LION) on the ProQuest platform. This module assumes a previous basic knowledge of the ProQuest Platform.

1.2 Session Objectives

At the end of this session you will be able to:Identify and use the different content types from the LION Homepage and how each of them can meet different research needsFind all the relevant information and sources related to an Author in the specially designed Author page and use other index results pages


1.3 The LION Homepage

Notes:

The LION Home page/Basic search is different to other databases on the ProQuest platform, since it provides an overview of all available content, with links to search forms and browse features. a. Above the Search box the different source filters allow to limit immediately the search to one content cluster or another.b. In the Central section you can find links to searching the different content clusters in Advanced Search i. Primary texts - The core of LION’s content is a library of over 400,000 primary works of poetry, drama and prose dating from the 8th Century AD to the present day, representing the essential canon of Anglophone Western Literature. ii. Literary Criticism - The Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL) index of articles, monographs and dissertations from 1920 to present, is a comprehensive library of literary criticism, of recognized academic quality and scholarly value. This database is enhanced by over 430 current Literary Scholarly Journals in Full-Text, many with images. iii. Reference Works - Undergraduate students particularly will benefit from a large collection of reference resources, which includes over 6,000 Biographies + 1,500 Bibliographies specially commissioned, plus essential encyclopedias and companions covering a range of genres and national literatures. iv. Featured Authors section - the Next section in the page is a carousel with a selection of notable authors. This section also offers a link to the Browse section, where we can select easily Authors by time period, Literary Movement, or by name. v. Multimedia content - LION also includes two types of multimedia content to make the access to some primary sources more lively and appealing. - The BBC Arkangel edition of the complete Shakespeare’s works contains dramatic unabridged audio recordings of all the Bard’s 38 plays. - Literature Online also offers nearly 900 video clips of poets reading their own and others’ works. Now this collection is expanded by incorporating links to the audio recordings at The Poetry Archive, whose purpose is to create brand new recordings of important contemporary poets, as well as preserve historic and hard to find recordings of long dead poets. vi. More Information - At the bottom of the page you can download an updated excel title list of ALL the different sources available in LION, including the Primary & Reference Texts and the Scholarly


criticism periodicals. Finally you can verify which LION collections your institution subscribes to.

1.4 Source types meet different research needs

Each of the LION different content clusters helps building a complete picture of an author production, period or literary movement, but they also help serving different research needs


1.5 Source types for different research needs

Notes:

i. Primary texts - Scholarly researchers - at graduate level & faculty - may need to perform powerful philology and history of language researches on the evolution of texts, words, or concepts across centuries. They need to work essentially on the original texts and be able to search into them easily and efficiently.

ii. Literary Criticism - Librarians perform researches for their patrons over authoritative scholarly journals for relevant criticism research and reviews over authors, their literary productions, or periods and movements. Access to a vast repertoire of criticism literature will provide contextual insights into the latest research achievements on classic and modern writers.

iii.Reference Works - Undergraduate researchers need fast access to easy overviews of writers and their works, of literary movements and periods, and experience the impact of live poetry and drama performances. They will benefit from a large collection of reference resources, which includes over 6,000 Biographies + 1,500 Bibliographies specially commissioned, plus essential encyclopedias and companions covering a range of genres and national literatures.

1.8 Author Page

Notes:

The majority of the searches in LION start from an author name. There are several ways to search for an author name from the home page: enter the author name in the box and select the Author Pages filter. The results page will show a list of authors. At the top you’ll find the relevant Author Page. This page will show first the essential biographic information of the author, the indexing, and a link to a more extended Biography and bibliography. In the lower section it will list all the content relevant for that author in separate boxes, making easy to spot the different types of sources. You can also browse the authors by Literary Movement, Period, or from the Alpha list. Finally, you can click on any of the Featured authors presented in the Home Page carousel to reach the relevant author page.


1.9 The Main Results Page

Notes:

When searching in Basic Search, in all sources, LION will present another Results index page, the Main results page, which will organize the results by the main source types, making it easier to select the more relevant sources. So you will find the results arranged by Criticism, Primary Texts, Author pages, if any, and Reference Works.
