1 THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH September 2017 PASTOR’S CORNER Dear Friends, This is my last letter to all of you. I’ll be brief. First, I am no longer your pastor. I cannot and do not want to interfere in the life of the church and the work of your interim or your next installed minister. Even though I love you all dearly, I will not be available for weddings or funerals. Some of you know that I’ve maintained 2 Facebook pages, one with church members and then a personal one. I plan on being off social media for at least 6 months, and will close out my church page. Secondly, while I’m no longer your pastor, I’ll always be your friend. Our house will always be open and you have an open invitation to come and visit. Thirdly, one of the things I’ve learned from moving is that our sense of community grows. You will be a part of us forever, and Danville will always hold a special place in our hearts. Lastly, thank you. We were hungry and you fed us. We were thirsty and you gave us something to drink. We were strangers and you welcomed us. Thank you for your faithfulness, for your friendship, for your support and for your love. God’s continued blessings on all of you as you continue your ministry together. Grace & peace, Jim The office/building will be closed Monday, September 4.

September 2017

PASTOR’S CORNER

Dear Friends,

This is my last letter to all of you.

Grace & peace,

Jim

LIVING WATERS FOR THE WORLD

The Flamingos are coming!

Our flamingo friends had such a good time hanging out with us last year that they’ve planned a return

visit and have again volunteered to help raise some funds on behalf of PYC and our continued

ministry. Here’s how it works:

During the week of September 17-30, flocks of plastic flamingos will be gathering on the front lawns

of members of The Presbyterian Church, Trinity Episcopal Church, and First Christian Church. For a

small donation (see below for details) you can have a friend’s lawn “flocked”. The flamingos will

remain on the lawn for 24 hours before being moved to the next lawn the next day. The youth will

have a table in Fellowship Hall on September 3 and September 10 where you can purchase a flock

or two. You can also stop by the office or contact Hannah McIntyre.

The prices are:

Small Flock (10 Flamingos) - $20 Donation

Medium Flock (25 Flamingos) - $35 Donation

Large Flock (50 Flamingos) - $55 Donation

Super-Size Flock (75 Flamingos) - $75 Donation

But what if you don’t want to get flocked?! Well, there’s insurance for that! Flamingo Insurance can be bought from any of the PYC youth for $50. This insurance will protect you from any and all potential flockings. Insurance must be purchased by September 2nd in order for it to take effect.

More clean water is on the way….

Your Transylvania Presbytery Living Waters for the World mission team will be working in the village of Oxcabal in the Yucatan peninsula to bring affordable clean water to more people in that area. And if you believe that all God’s children deserve clean water, then YOU are invited to be a part of the team! This year’s trip will be in early November, but planning begins SOON, so if this is of interest to you, call Joanie Lukins (859-583-5990). Transylvania presbytery has been engaged in this ministry for 15 years, and millions of gallons of clean water have been produced by systems installed by our team. That means thousands of people are living better, healthier lives. Come and see for yourself!

CHRISTIAN FORMATION

WHIRLwind Wednesdays!

We are very excited to announce our new Wednesday evening program, WHIRLwind Wednesdays! Because many of you told us that Sunday afternoons and evenings are often family time, we have decided to move our evening programs from Sunday to Wednesday evenings, 5:30-7:30 p.m., beginning on Wednesday, September 13. We will begin with dinner and fellowship at 5:30 p.m. The main dish will be provided by the church, and we ask that you either bring a side or dessert to share, or contribute to an offering to help offset the cost of the meals. We also ask that you sign up to either pick up the meal or help prepare it in the church kitchen once in the fall and once in the spring. At 6:00 p.m., we will dismiss the children to the Godly Play assembly room on the second floor for children’s choir and a Bible lesson and craft. This fall we will be using the WHIRL Lectionary curriculum from Sparkhouse. It follows the Revised Common Lectionary we use in our church services. There will be programs for adults at 6:00 p.m. as well. Also, the hand bell choir will rehearse from 6-7 p.m., and the adult choir will rehearse from 7-8 p.m. if you are interested in joining either of those groups. We look forward to this exciting new adventure, and we ask for your support and commitment to this program. Amy Wilson and the Children’s Formation Committee MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

THANK YOU!

Dear friends and church family,

Thank you so very much for your visits, cards, flowers and prayers. You all have made me

feel cared for. I miss seeing you at church and your support means so much.

Fondly,

Louise Cox

Thank you to the Hope Springs Steering Committee for donating funds from the yard sale to

The Presbyterian Church of Danville. A $1,000 grant was given to Soups On Us and another

$1,000 was given as an unrestricted gift. These gifts are much appreciated!

To My Church Family:

My greatest thanks and appreciation for again being there for me through another major

surgery. I am very grateful for your thoughts, prayers, cards, visits, snacks, telephone calls

and gifts while recuperating. I am now going through outpatient therapy which will last

probably several months. I have received so much from you that has shown me how much

more I need to do for others.

Sincerely,

Brenda Mitchell

The staff would like to thank the whole congregation for all the help with Jim’s retirement

party and reception. It couldn’t have happened without YOU!

We are fortunate to have many musical people within and connected to our

congregation. During the summer --- Memorial Day to Labor Day --- we have enjoyed the

talents of these folks: Alex McMann (cello), Lydia Graham (soprano), Susan Shewmaker

(piano/organ), Lee Spoonamore (bass trombone), Kim Heerschee (oboe), Danville Dulcimers,

Meg Saunders (violin), Robin Voss (cello), Casey Huggins (piano/voice), Lydia Ellis (Native

American flute), and Vince DiMartino (trumpet). Thank you, All! You have greatly enriched

our worship this summer!

Dear Members of The Danville Presbyterian Church:

As I sat in your lovely Fellowship Hall on Saturday evening, sharing in the celebration of the birthday/

retirement party for Jim Stewart, I realized how very grateful I have been over his years of ministry in

Danville for the support he has given to the Godly Play program. When Tom Farmer called me to become

the Minister of Christian Formation in 2000, the program he wanted me to focus on developing most was

that of Godly Play. We built one classroom the first year and then completed three more before I returned

to ministering in the Episcopal Church in Lexington.

Danville Presbyterian Church is one of a handful of what are known as "Centers for Excellence". That title

means that the program has been viewed as one of the best in the country and it is the place where each

April, for the past 15 years, we have held a National Training for the Godly Play Foundation. Godly Play is

the finest program of spiritual formation I have ever witnessed and it has grown now into countries

numbering 42 in the world. It is designed to begin with children age 3 and continue through grade

5. There are not many churches who have both the facility and the commitment of storytellers and

doorpersons to carry out such a program. What amazes me the most, however, is not just the rooms and

the people who teach in the program but it is the number of church members who have been through the

rigorous 3 days of training we have each April. The Training is 3 very long days and there are 22 - yes 22

- church members who have been through the entire training. Amazing !!!! But even more amazing is

that both Hannah and Jim have gone through the entire three days of training. They both have felt such a

passion for this program that they gave up three days in their already-busy schedules to learn more about

the program and how to integrate it into the total church program of Christian Formation. In fact, so

important has this program become that this fall, one of the adult classes to be offered on a Sunday

morning, is Godly Play for Adults. I encourage everyone to experience a Godly Play story sometime. I

guarantee that you will be touched in a very deep place in your soul and will never have experienced

anything like it before.

So, many, many thanks to Jim Stewart for his learning about the program and then using it in many

different ways. I am confident that Hannah will continue using it also for she, too, has a deep passion for

this method of telling Bible stories. During the past 11 years, my Diaconal ministry has been to use Godly

Play with folks suffering from Alzheimer's disease or some other form of dementia. There is something

about the use of the little wooden figures, used to tell the stories, that seems to trigger memories for these

folks. Jean Harney continues to be a part of that ministry, also. So many people have helped throughout

the years of our training in Danville and MANY THANKS are due them, also. So THANK YOU ! THANK

YOU !! THANK YOU !!! to Jim, Hannah, and all those who are involved in the Godly Play program.

God bless you all and may you find a pastor who will continue supporting this amazing program of Godly

Play.

Peace and Love,

The Reverend Lois W. Howard

THANK YOU!

CHOIR SINGERS WANTED

THE LEGACY FUND NOTEBOOK I read parts of this devotion in “These Days” for August 5, 2017 by Robin Gallaher Branch. It seems very appropriate for describing what the Legacy Fund seeks to accomplish.

“Planned Goodness” [“I myself feel confident ...that you yourselves are full of goodness”

Romans 15:14 The word for goodness here, agathosune, is a rare word and describes a rare quality. It depicts directed, purposeful goodness. In today's vernacular, it resembles the concept of planned giving, of “doing the most good,” as a popular charity states. This goodness is active love. The actions become normal to the doer. A person practicing agathosune actually enjoys giving generously and diligently chooses to make kindness a habit. Such a person “is good to be around.” Others feel at ease. This person likes you and sees good qualities in you.] We have an opportunity to practice “Planned Goodness.” If you would like to talk about it I am available in the church office from 9AM until Noon on Tuesdays or by appointment. Don Porter 859-324-5020 or [email protected].

Does your voice sound amazing in the shower or jamming to the
