Pastor’s Reflection

Dear Friends,

It is Lent again. We will start with ashes on our foreheads and end by head-

ing into the darkness of Holy Week before the bright radiance of Easter

shines again.

As we enter into this holy season, many people take time to think about how

they want to grow closer to God. These 40 days are a good time to put down

what we need to put down and take up what we need to take up. Your pray-

ers will help you figure out what that is in your own life. God works with each

of us in our own way to help us grow into holiness.

Wednesdays at Wittenberg offer an opportunity to grow closer to God

through worship. We’ll sing Vespers (Evening Prayer) at 7pm. Supper is at

6, hosted by our service groups. This year, we will focus on the Parable of

the Prodigal Son from Luke 15. We’ll use The Return of the Prodigal Son, a

book by Henri Nouwen, as a guide. We’ll focus on the different characters in

the parable and hear what God is saying to us through each of them.

We are also offering family devotions from Illustrated Ministries. These are a

great way for families to spend devotional time together. They are separate

from the Wednesday worship, so they’re meaningful as an extra time with

God or for folks who have a hard time getting here for midweek worship.

They’re available for pickup in the Narthex or by coming by the office.

Our Lenten offering will be going to the SC Synod’s Abundancia appeal.

(Don’t worry about pronouncing it correctly. God’s going to use it all the

same.) The Abundancia appeal benefits our synod’s Latino mission starts—

Christo Rey in Columbia, Gaston, and Pelion; Sagrada Familia in Columbia;

Nuestro Salvador in Greenville; and Iglesia del Mesias in Mauldin. You’ll see

more about it on another page in this newsletter, but what excites me most

is that these congregations are bearing fruit. Cristo Rey baptized more than

forty people in 2019. The news we get from these congregations is beautiful.

They are a way that we are seeing God at work in the South Carolina Syn-

od. You can contribute at Wednesday worship, with a designated offering on

Sunday, or through the SCSynod.com website.

May God bless your Lenten commitments this year, that we may all grow in

faith in these holy weeks.

SC Lutheran Men in Mission Honors Wittenberg Lutheran Church is proud of our members for their involvement with Lutheran Men in Mis-sion. Recently, some were recognized for their excellent work. -Pastor Emily Edenfield: completed term as Pastoral Advisor -Larry Dasher: Western Conference Man of the Year -Robert Epting: completed term as President -Gerrie Gresham: Secretary-elect Congratulations! We are proud of each of you! Keep up the great work.

A Note from the President - March Newsletter

Thanks to all who participated in All-Committee night on February 9th. We had a great turnout and your participation and planning will help guide us throughout the year. Prior to All-Committee night, we had a brief business meeting. Besides normal business items, the Council received an update on the status of the Youth Director position. The application period is currently open for this position through March 14th and we hope to receive quality applicants. The First Sunday Lunch schedule was reviewed and special benefit requests were approved. Currently, the month of December is still open to any group who de-sires to participate. The Council also approved the SC Synod’s Abundancia Appeal as our Lenten offer-ing project to support Latino ministry in South Carolina. You can learn more about the appeal at https://scsynod.com/abundancia-appeal/. There will be additional information available throughout the Lenten season. The Council also introduced a timeline for working on a new security policy for our youth. Our goal is to have this new policy in place prior to the next calendar year.

On February 23rd, Wittenberg announced a schedule of events to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Wittenberg, This is an exciting year and we hope that you will participate in and enjoy many of the planned events we have for this year!

Don’t forget First Sunday Lunch on March 1st sponsored by Circle L to benefit Relay for Life!

Grace, mercy, and peace,

Brian Shealy

MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW!

It’s Pictorial Directory time! There have been so many changes at WLC since our last pictorial direc-

tory back in 2014. As of February 5, we have a contract with Grace Pictorial Directories out of Gra-

ham, NC. If you have seen some of the directories Life Touch has done for some of our local

churches, you may have noticed that they only contain members’ pictures and an address section.

Our directory will have those two sections plus other sections (faith, education, music, activities,

groups, random shots, etc.). We (Cher Davis 803-360-7361 and Jo Wells 803-532-4833) have al-

ready started taking group pictures. If you have any questions, please contact us. Because of Pre-

school, we will be using other locations in the church for picture taking and viewing of your pictures.

Anyone who has their picture taken will receive one free 8X10 and one free pictorial directory per

household. There will be a $5 charge for any pictures that you submit yourself (in place of the ap-

pointment dates). There is no additional charge for those on active military duty or for those in

health care facilities. Anyone who does not have their picture taken will be required to pay the $5

charge.

Please check your 2020 church directory to make sure that your address information is correct be-

cause we will be using that information for the pictorial directory.

Individual and family pictures will be taken on April 23, 24, and 25, 2020. We will have sign up

sheets in the Narthex and internet sign up available. You can make an appointment by calling the

church office, signing up on a Sunday morning, or by internet.

Check out the video from Grace Pictorial Directories on our Facebook page!

Bishop’s Election Committee Survey: South Carolina Synod is in a period of

thoughtful discernment as we prepare to elect a new bishop at Synod Assembly

this May. We are collecting the thoughts and prayers of people across the synod

through a survey. The link is accessible through the SC Synod website.

Dear Friends of the South Carolina Synod; There are times when God’s abundance overwhelms us and con-

vinces that the Spirit is still up to transforming the world. It is our belief that what God is doing among our Latino

communities is just such a time. What started as two families eleven years ago and grew to 120 in worship with-

in a year and is now a congregation conducting 30-40 baptisms each year, Cristo Rey is showing us the abun-

dance that God provides when we give the Spirit a chance to tell us what we should be about. St. David’s Lu-

theran Church opened themselves up to launch a mission in partnership with the South Carolina Synod and that

mission is flourishing to a community that has historically not been part of the Lutheran Church, but it is a com-

munity that craves the Good News from the Lutheran perspective. It is one of the fastest growing missions in

the ELCA. This abundant expression of how God’s abundant love can transform a community is leading Cristo

Rey to their own facility. This place will become a community center where worship will be at the heart of what

they do, but also Christian education, and a place to celebrate birthdays and family events. Having a place of

their own will also expand the impact of the ministry as they may develop a community garden and reach more

deeply into the neighborhood.

God’s abundance is also being witnessed as we work together as a synod to help launch this first facility for

Cristo Rey. The children who worship at Cristo Rey are working to fund the playground with money that they

earn and have already raised nearly $10,000 for this purpose. Before publishing this material to share the story

with the whole synod, the three largest gifts we need have already been received because people want to re-

flect God’s abundance through this ministry. And, God’s abundance is not just being seen at Cristo Rey. We

have other significant opportunities in other Latino communities in the upstate to continue to allow God’s abun-

dance to shine. You are invited to join us in reflecting a God of abundance through the Abundancia appeal.

Your gift will be used to continue to grow ministry within the Latino community across South Carolina.

In Christ,

Rev. Herman Yoos, Bishop

Deacon Lexanne Graves, Vice President of Synod Council

It’s been another busy month at the preschool! February started off with Groundhog Day! Our kids learned about what a groundhog is and finding it’s shadow. The first two weeks in February were all about Valentines. We used Valentines for crafts, fine motor skills, and math and cutting skills. And let’s not leave out the Valentine Tea Party! We enjoyed sandwiches, veggies, and sugar dipped cookies and pudding cups with pound cake and strawberries. Our kids sipped on fruit teas and punch, and were dressed for the occasion! Mrs. Mary Ann Shealy played music for us as we filled our tummies with spe-cial treats. On President’s Day we talked about who our current president is and what presidents do. Then we separated coins and rubbed over them with pencil and paper to transfer the design. The rest of that week we studied about the weather. We learned about the different types of weather, how to make a raincloud in a jar, and windsocks. On the 21st we had a special story time and the last week of the month we had career days. Several of our parents and congregation members participated in the event. We had an artist, chicken farmer, investigator, DNA agent, electrical lineman, tree farmer, pastor, physi-cal therapist, and a teacher. These little imaginations certainly had their minds filled with career opportu-nities for the future. We were so blessed to have so many different careers presented to the kids! Our letters for the month were B, X, F, and K. We use our letters along with our Wednesday bible lessons. B is for bible, X is for X-ray, F is for fish, K is for King Solomon. We also practiced fire drills and tornado drills this month. March is here and the first week is about Dr. Seuss! Then we jump into Ireland in anticipation of St. Pat-rick’s Day with leprechaun crafts, rainbows, and a leprechaun trap! When you think of March you think about the March winds which means it’s time for kites. Then we start studying about lions, lambs, frogs, and worms. During the month we’ll be celebrating Oreo day, Barbie day, Waffle day, and World Frog Day! Then the last week we start moving into Easter. Hopefully we’ll get a couple of sunshiny days so we can venture outside some. Check us out on Facebook as we post pictures of our adventures!
