Pastor’s Reflection

Sometimes, this last month before Christmas can feel like ice skating. Some

of you may be good at ice skating. I am not. My accomplishments include

making it around the rink with only minimal hanging on to the railing.

For me, December is often moments of glory interspersed with anxiety and

falling over.

This month’s calendar has enough to keep the church busy nearly every day

of the week. Grief Group is back. We have circle meetings, a congregation

meeting, parties, and some fantastic worship services to look forward to. The

third weekend alone will be a holy time, with our Blue Christmas service on

Saturday, December 14th, and our Christmas Program on Sunday the 15th.

Now is the time to invite your friends, neighbors, and maybe a coworker to

come with you to any of these events, or to Christmas Eve worship at 5:30 or

10:30pm.

That’s not to mention our service through the Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen.

We had our first weekend with 100+ clients in the Food Pantry this November

and we served 240 plates through the Soup Kitchen the same weekend. God

is turning generosity into gratitude at an amazing rate.

I know that for many of you, the church calendar layers over your work life,

where there’s the crunch to get things done by the end of the year, or busi-

ness has picked up for Christmas. It layers over your family life, whether

that’s traveling, juggling the kids’ schedules, or just getting in time with every-

one you love. And then life often throws in a curveball to the mix: a baby be-

ing born, or car trouble, or unexpected drama.

My hope is that, in the middle of all the busy, we’ll find some space to just be.

Maybe it will be as you hold communion in your hand and realize that the

baby in the manger truly is God-With-Us. Maybe you will take time to rest in

the presence of God before bed. Maybe it will be a favorite family tradition

that links you back to the faith.

One thing that helps in my family is an Advent wreath. We’ve used it for about

3 years now. We light the candles, sing a verse of a favorite hymn (usually it’s

“O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” because the kids could learn the refrain easi-

ly), and then prayer grace before dinner. The kids blow the candles out right

away, though I’ve never been sure why we can’t have them lit through the

meal. We also do an Advent calendar after dinner, though the kids mostly

enjoy the chocolate and the countdown.

On that night in Bethlehem, after travel and exhaustion and childbirth, Mary

and Joseph had a few moments to be with God, their son. Those precious

times sustained them, as they sustain us now.

May God bless you this month and always. May your busyness be joy and

your rest be peace.

A Note from the President - December Newsletter

Please remember to attend our annual Congregation Meeting on Sunday, December 8th at the 11 am worship service. During the meeting, we will take action on the 2nd reading of changes to our Constitution, Preschool and Church budgets, and the election of four new Congregation Council nominees. Please remember that additional nomi-nees for Council can be made until nominations come to a close on the floor of the meeting.

During the November Council meeting, Congregation Council had more great discussion about the proposed Master Site Plan. An alternative plan was submitted to Council after the previous month’s discussion. The Master Planning Committee will continue to make revisions and we look forward to the opportunity in the future to present this to you once the plans have been improved.

A job description for the Youth Coordinator position was finalized and approved during the Novem-ber Council session. The Executive Committee will begin working on a plan for the search process to fill this position and plans to report back to Council at the first of the year.

Please support our Youth on Sunday, December 1st during the First Sunday Lunch as they pre-pare a meal and fundraise to prepare for their summer mission trip. Thank you for all you do for our church and community!

Grace, mercy, and peace,

Brian Shealy

WLPP Wittenberg Lutheran Preschool Program

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

November has been full of crafts and discoveries. We have read several books from the library about thanksgiving, turkeys, pilgrims and Indians as well as having story time with the library. We have done feather painting, turkey handprints, pilgrim hats, Indian head pieces, log houses, Indian necklaces, and pinecone turkeys. We learned about Veterans’ Day, celebrated Mickey Mouse Day, and enjoyed a bit of team rivalry on Clemson vs. Carolina Day. We also started our music practice for the Christmas play with Mrs. Mary Ann Shealy. Our kids and their families have also participated in a food drive for a family in need. Our box of donations was overflowing! With all the fun we also talked about what we have to be thankful for. Mom and Dad are at the top of the list, but the pet cat and dog made the list too! December will be especially busy! We have so much on the calendar to make and learn. We will be learning about the nativity and angels. Plus, candy canes, mittens, Christmas trees, ornaments, stockings, gingerbread, wreaths and of course Santa and the elves and the reindeer. Our older kids have been learning to write the letters in their names, days of the calendar and months in the year. They have even been learning to cut paper…not hair, with scissors. Our younger class has been learning colors, shapes, singing songs, and they too learn about the months and days of the calen-dar. We all enjoy story time and since the weather has been cool and wet, we have been doing pro-jects to help with our fine motor skills. Tearing paper, threading pasta, and building towers of blocks are things you might see us working on. We even have our own Friendship bread in the making. The children have been helping with kneading the bags, measuring ingredients, and they will be en-joying the finished project one morning for breakfast! As our year comes to a close, we would like to thank all of you who have a hand in the preschool. Your donations are a blessing, the time spent serving on the board, giving of your time and talents, and sharing food with the kids, are all ways that represent the love and care that is put into this pro-gram. We have a wonderful group of kids. Every kid has their meltdowns but seeing that smile across their faces as you walk into the room or feeling those little arms around your legs sharing a hug and a “I love you” just melts your heart and makes you forget about the food smeared on the table and floor, or the little one who decided his/her classmate might taste good today. But even more, they bring you back to a place of innocence that we as adults lose as we grow older. The wonder of a leaf, the worm in the wrong place at the wrong time, or that black cat that walks through the back yard, brings a world of delight to those sweet little faces.

We hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Cricket Leaphart Wittenberg Lutheran Preschool
