Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners: As we continue our Academic year I thought it might be fun to share an article I came across listing some of the remarkable things that the Church and specifically the Jesuits have contributed to our Modern world. I hope you enjoy it. Fr. Harrigan Pastor

12 Jesuit inventions and discoveries that might surprise you By Jean Elizabeth Seah

If not for the Society of Jesus, we would not be enjoying some basics taken for granted in the modern world. Nerdy academic Jesuits and their swashbuckling, globe-trotting missionary brothers have made significant contributions not only in astronomy, seismology, mathematics and technology, but also in theatre, botany, medicine and international cuisine. 1. The Calendar Christopher Clavius, S.J. (1538–1612), was a renowned German mathematician and astronomer who modified Aloysius Lilius’ initial proposal for the Gregorian Calendar, the internationally-accepted civil calendar we use today, which was promulgated in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. 2. Hypertext Italian Fr. Roberto Busa, S.J. (1913–2011) was the pioneer in computational linguistics who, while studying Aquinas’ writings, convinced IBM founder Thomas J. Watson that computers could be used for text, not just numbers. 3. Modern Selenographs The Italian astronomer Giovanni Battista Riccioli, S.J. (1598–1671) and mathematician and physicist Francesco Maria Grimaldi, S.J. (1618–1663) published a selenograph in Almagestum Novum (1651), mapping the craters,

mountains, and other features of the moon; this formed the basis for modern lunar nomenclature. 4. Mathematical Calculations Jean Charles de La Faille, S.J. (1597–1652) was a Flemish mathematician; in his book Theoremata de centro gravitatis partium circuli et ellipsis (1632) he determined the center of gravity of the sector of a circle. André Tacquet, S.J. (1612–1660) was another Flemish mathematician, whose work prepared the ground for the eventual discovery of the calculus. 5. The Trap Door Jesuits wrote and directed plays in their 16th- and 17th-century schools, and a 17th-century Jesuit teacher is held to have invented the trap door.

Jesuits are also credited with perfecting the sheer curtains used in theaters, known as the scrim. 6. Tempura When Portuguese Jesuit missionaries arrived in Japan in the 16th century, they began to deep-fry shrimp while abstaining from meat on Ember Days, an ancient Catholic observance corresponding with the four seasons. “Tempura” and “ember” both come from the Latin term, Quatour Tempora, “the four seasons.” In a twist of poetic justice (or divine retribution?), Tokugawa Ieyasu, the shogun who started the persecution of Catholics, died from over-eating tempura. 7. Jesuit Tea In the mid-17th century, Jesuits domesticated the maté plant in South America, producing a beverage known as “the elixir of the Jesuits,” or Jesuit tea (Spanish té de los Jesuitas; German Jesuitentee). They were probably trying to save the native population from the scourge of alcoholism.

8. Passionfruit/Passionflower Spanish Jesuit missionaries named the passionflower, or “flower of the five wounds,” after Christ’s Passion. * The pointed tips of the leaves were taken to represent the Holy Lance. * The tendrils represent the whips used in the flagellation of Christ. * The ten petals and sepals represent the ten faithful apostles (less St. Peter the denier and Judas Iscariot the betrayer). * The flower’s radial filaments, which can number more than a hundred and vary from flower to flower, represent the crown of thorns. * The chalice-shaped ovary with its receptacle represents a hammer or the Holy Grail * The 3 stigmata represent the 3 nails and the 5 anthers below them the 5 wounds (four by the nails and one by the lance). * The blue and white colors of many species’ flowers represent Heaven and Purity. The flower has been given names related to this symbolism throughout Europe since that time. In Spain, it is known as espina de Cristo (“Christ’s thorn”). German names include Christus-Krone (“Christ’s crown”), Christus-Strauss (“Christ’s bouquet”), Dorn-Krone (“crown of thorns”), Jesus-Leiden (“Jesus’ Passion”), Marter (“Passion”) or Muttergottes-Stern (“Mother of God’s star”). 9. Camellias and the St. Ignatius Bean Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus, who devised our modern system of naming organisms, named camellia flowers after a Jesuit brother, Georg Josef Kamel S.J. (1661–1706). Kamel spent his life documenting plants and animals in the Philippines as part of his medical and pharmaceutical practice. He discovered the healing properties of the St. Ignatius Bean (Strychnos ignatii), a source of strychnine today. Linnaeus was so impressed by Brother Kamel’s work that he changed the name of the genus Thea to Camellia. This genus includes the shrubs from which we derive tea. 10. Quinine (Jesuit’s Bark) Seventeenth-century Spanish Jesuit missionaries in Peru learned from the natives that cinchona bark could cure malaria. Jesuits took the remedy throughout the world, curing the emperor of Japan. Today, it is also used in tonic water, so thanks to the Jesuits, we have gin and tonic. 11. The Megaphone Athanasius Kircher, S.J. (1602–1680) was a German Renaissance scholar and polymath who was one of the first people to observe microbes through a microscope, and theorized that the bubonic plague was spread by infectious microorganisms. While not busy descending into volcanoes, surviving shipwrecks and beating the plague, Kircher invented clocks, robots and the first megaphone. 12. The Umbrella Parasols and umbrellas were introduced to France and England in the 17th-century by Jesuits who had visited East Asia. On 22 June 1664, the English writer John Evelyn mentioned in his diary a collection of Father Thompson S.J., who had been in China and Japan. Among the artifacts were “fans like those our ladies use, but much larger, and with long handles, strangely carved and filled with Chinese characters” – parasols. So, the next time you put your feet up under a beach umbrella while sipping a gin and tonic, munching on tempura and passion fruit, and surfing the internet, remember Saint Ignatius and his Society of Jesus, who have greatly added to our knowledge, our pleasures and our comforts — Ad maiorem Dei gloriam, all for the greater glory of God

Annual Life Chain

Sunday October 6, 2019

The Mary Star community will meet at Mary Star Parish Auditorium at 1:30 pm and walk

down to 9th and Gaffey Street to stand together in support of life. LIFE CHAIN is a peaceful and prayerful public witness of pro-

life individuals standing for 90 minutes praying for our nation and for an end to

abortion.

Every Wednesday there is Holy Hour in the church beginning at 6pm.

In order to convert America and save the world, what we need is for

every parish to come before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in Holy

Hours of Prayer--Saint Mother Teresa The hour begins with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. The Rosary is prayed ollowed by time for silent adoration and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. The Holy Hour ends with Benediction. Please Come and give Jesus the gift of your presence. This is a time of abundant blessings for all!

First Reading Amos 8:4-7 Unfair business practices and injustice to the poor will be judged by God. Responsorial Psalm Psalm 113: 1-2,4-6,7-8 Praise be to God, who raises up the poor. Second Reading 1 Timothy 2:1-8 Paul tells Timothy that prayer for those in authority is pleasing to God because God wills the salvation of all. Gospel Reading Luke 16:1-13 (shorter form, Luke 16:10-13) Jesus tells a parable about a dishonest steward who is commended for his prudence; one cannot serve both God and money.

Perpetual Adoration It takes a village! You have heard these words before. Having prayer available before the Blessed

Sacrament every hour of every day is a challenge. Circumstances change and hours open up. Please come forward to meet the challenge and be willing to stay with our dear Lord, for just one hour, in Perpetual Adoration.

These hours remain to be filled: Thursday morning 3-4 a.m. Friday afternoon 1-2 p.m. “Prayer is nothing else but union with God. When one has a heart that is pure and united with God, he is given a kind of serenity and sweetness, a light that surrounds him with marvelous brightness.”St. John Vianney

Thank you for your consideration. I can be reached at (310)548-1693. Barbara West-Coordinator

Announcements Sunday Readings

We extend an invitation to all who would like to join our Lectio Divina group. We meet on the first (1st ) and third (3rd) Tuesdays of the month in the Parish Center Chapel from 9:00- 10:00 am.

Lectio Divina is a prayerful reflection on a Scripture passage. The text for each meeting is the gospel from the previous Sunday.

There is growing interest in this ancient form of prayer and it will be to our benefit if we open ourselves to it. Hoping to see many of you at the next sessions. Blessings, Sr. Loretto

The school year, having concluded its fifth week, has truly set sail and our students are moving quickly into their academic journey. Beginning with basics on the Science front, Gr. 1 began a unit on Weather through observation and measurement. After predicting which areas of school would be hottest, each student gathered a base temperature in the classroom with individual thermometers, then visited various areas of the campus to record temperature changes. Later, they used the collected data to confirm their hypothesis. The 8th Grade Science class is working on measuring density and getting comfortable taking measurements in the STREAM Lab. Students worked in the lab to see if volume affects density by measuring mass and volume of different materials in order to find their density. All students in grades K thru 8 completed their STAR standardized testing in Math and Reading or Early Literacy. These online tests, taken 3 times a year, are vital for the faculty to have real-time data on the growth of our students and make changes to whole-class curriculum and individual student direction. Girls Volleyball and Flag Football, are geared up, practicing and ready to take on the fall season. "A" level Volleyball is hungry for a first place finish in the St. Thomas the Apostle Volleyball Tournament, after placing second last year. The "A" Football team has hopes of advancing beyond their semi-final playoff position of last season. Listening to the recent homily of our Pastor, Fr. Harrigan before the students and staff, Christ has set before us a flotilla of three ships to guide our youth, Friendship, Scholarship and Discipleship. Mary Star of the Sea Elementary is the perfect place for the students of San Pedro to join in that voyage. .

The Archdiocese is participating in an independent compensation program for victim-survivors of sexual abuse of minors by priests The Archdiocese of Los Angeles, along with five other dioceses in California, will be participating in an independent program to offer persons who were victims of abuse as minors by diocesan priests, ac-cess to compensation as well as access to counseling services if they chose. Those harmed many years ago and barred from filing lawsuits because of civil stat-utes of limitations will be eligible to make claims under the Independent Compensation Program for Victim-Survivors of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Priests. The Archdiocese’s participation in the pro-gram is part of a long-standing commitment to sup-porting and compensating victims of abuse, the pro-tection of children and the vulnerable, and the pre-vention of abuse and misconduct in Catholic par-ishes, schools and ministries. Nationally recognized mediators and private compensation program admin-istrators, Kenneth R. Feinberg and Camille S. Biros will administer the program.
