read the bulle n. We wish you a blessed and Happy New Year!

Dear Parishioners,

“At the beginning of the year” wrote Pope Francis one year ago in 2016, “it is beau ful to exchange good wishes. In this way, we renew for one another the hope that the year which awaits us may be somewhat be er.”

As the new year begins, we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, and, on this day we ask for her protec on and her intercession, because she too is our mother. She is our “life, our sweetness and our hope.” Therefore, at the beginning of a new year, let us turn to her in order to join our voices in prayer seeking peace and unity in our own families, and to pray for success and happiness as the year unfolds.

I pray for each of you as a new year begins. I pray for your families and your loved ones, especially those among our families who have fallen away from the faith. I pray especially that as we begin a new year, you will grow in love and discipleship for Jesus Christ and his Church through the Blessed Virgin Mary—Our Lady of Peace.

Neither en tlement nor indifference can be quali es of a Chris an disciple, because as St. Paul encourages us in his le er to the Colossians, he says “be grateful…singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gra tude in your hearts to God.” In this way gra tude is essen al to being a disciple of Christ.

Blessed John Henry Newman describes this when he explains: “unless we have a true love of Christ, we are not His true disciples; and we cannot love Him unless we have hear elt gra tude to Him.” Here, Cardinal Newman was preaching about the Crucifixion and pleading us to be moved by the event. Gra tude consists of remembering what Christ has done for us, and of being grateful for all that we have been given. Gra tude reminds us of God’s loving kindness, and helps us to see and appreciate the ways he con nues to act in our lives. Gra tude gives us confidence in the steadfast love and mercy of God the Father. Gra tude gives us hope, because as we acknowledge and personally understand all that God has done for us. We realize that all things that come from God are good, and all things that are good come from God—never bad, but always good, in fact, always the very best!

I am grateful to have been granted to blessing to serve this parish community and I am grateful for your witness of faith, devo on, and ac ve Chris an life. I am grateful for your fidelity to the sacraments, to the perennial prac ces of the church, and for your desire to grow in holiness. I am also grateful for your generosity, for your financial support of the church and the ac ve par cipa on of many of you in our parish life.

God has indeed blessed us! These blessings, however, are not to be stored in a bank or buried under a rock, but they are to be used and mul plied so we may bear fruit that will last. We are called to live out our gra tude and to turn to Him who has blessed us, to follow his call, respond to His kind favor, and to transform the world in joy, in charity, and in peace.

Let us give thanks to our Lord and our Blessed Mother and allow our thanks to an impetus for each one of us to make a return for all of the good that has been poured out upon each one of us.

Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us,

Fr. Brian

“The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” John 1:14

Solemnity of Mary Mother of God

“On June 22, 431, the Council of Ephesus was convened. That great Council insisted "If anyone does

not confess that the Emmanuel is truly God and therefore that the holy Virgin is the Mother of God

"Theotokos" (since she begot according to the flesh the Word of God made flesh), anathema sit."

The Council affirmed that Jesus Christ is One Person, with two natures--human and divine

and that this is a union which cannot be separated.” (from Catholicculture.org)

“Mother chaste and Mother pure

Mother meek and Mother mild

Listen to my prayer and pleading

As a mother heeds her child.”

Feeding Faith Book Club Featured January title:

($14.95)

From Fr. Gabriele Amorth, the renowned exor-cist in Rome, comes this powerful, eye-opening book on the deadly antics of Satan & his fallen angels, as well as spiritual remedies for each.

These pages provide a basic orientation in the dark phenomenology, succinctly explaining Catholic doctrine on the fallen angels & their innumerable manifestations. Among the many questions Fr. Amorth answers in this book are: - Do the sins of our ancestors influence our life? - What is the state of souls in purgatory? - What is the role of sacramental in fighting temptation? - When should exorcisms & prayers of healing be performed? - What happens during an exorcism?
