Working at Moody's:

Fun, worked on analytics side in structured credit

Moody's provided a great summer experience where I could learn a lot and build experience for my future career search.

I worked in the content department in the data science division creating a semantic graph database. While this was a wonderful experience, it made me decide to go into academia.

Great people/culture, but my department (tax) didn't have nearly enough work for me

Somewhat slow--felt frankly underutilized. After good reviews, Moody's initiated the discussion of a second internship but never followed up.

I declined my offer to work at Microsoft, although the team seemed like a great fit to me.

Great experience as an intern after my freshman year

I really enjoyed working with Vladimir Agajanov, a data scientist. I wrote an interactive web-app tool that allowed a user to explore the data passing through Moody's internal servers every day. I learned about recent advances in machine learning and how they were being applied to analyze capital markets.

Will work in future -NA

2017 M3 Challenge Past Winner Survey

Q15) Please share any comments about your experience with Moody’s Mega Math Challenge.

I have a compliment:

A memorable part of my high school experience!

Allowing participants to select their own start time was not particularly useful for my team but seems like a convenient option

Always trying to improve!

Amazing experience; very well-organized; thoughtful judges and great organizers.

Finally a fun math competiton that trains real-world math.

Great

Great 24 teamwork adventure! Perfect balance of boundaries and freedom

I absolutely loved this experience and would not have changed it in any way!

I am very glad to have participated in the M3 challenge back in High School and thank you for the opportunities it gave me.

I appreciate how the winning projects from previous years are made public for us to practice with.

I appreciate how there are always a variety of approaches students can take, when they attempt to solve the problem.

I appreciated that the modeling challenge was of a problem that was relevant yet could be modelled to a first order within the alotted time

I believe that the competition really showed my team and I the extent that math could be used outside of a classroom. A lot of what we learned in school could be applied to life situations more than we could have realized.

I enjoyed the challenge - it made me a lot more confident in my math abilities and was an excellent asset for college.

I enjoyed the topic about the shared cars. I think it is good to use relevant problems so that data can easily be accessed.

I enjoyed the treatment we received at Finals in NYC.

I feel like Moody's helped me get my first internship. It definitely helped steer me in the direction of modeling. It was a great experience and winning a scholarship was a great way to finish my senior year. I recommend it to any high schooler I know who likes STEM.

I found the trip to New York extremely enjoyable and the whole experience was absolutely incredible. Moody's was very welcoming and gracious towards us.

I had a great experience in the competition, and I hope SIAM makes it so future generations have a great experience as well

I had a great time participating in the challenge in high school!

I liked the provided data this year - it decreased time my team spent looking for it

I love the program! Great opportunity for scholarship, a ton of fun, great speakers, and a lot of learning.

I loved getting to see our paper published.

I loved it! I had a lot of pure math background but knew very little about math modeling. I'm so glad that I was able to see the wide applications math can have in the real world!

I loved the experience--the rush, the frustration, the stress as the seconds tick by.. and even the anticipation for the results. Would do it again in a heartbeat!

I loved the way we were treated in New York. Really thought it was an awesome experience.

I loved this competition because it showed me that math/applied math and practical skills are valued somewhere. Often, in school, it feels like applied math skills and problem-solving are not valued. It was so nice to learn that what I love to do is actually valued.

I really commend how you follow-up with participants.

I really enjoyed it and found it challenging and a great team-building event.

2017 M3 Challenge Past Winner Survey

I really enjoyed my experience with Moody's Mega Math Challenge and it largely inspired me to pursue the applied math major that I am now enrolled in.

I really enjoyed the competition.

I still remember fondly the experience. It did emphasize the importance of incorporating applied mathematics to solve real world problems, a lesson I apply in my work with economics and business now.

I think M3 challenge was a great way to see how math could be applied to the real world. It was one of my most memorable high school experiences.

I think this competition is a very useful way to educate students on the importance of data and data-driven solutions.

Interesting problem

It was a great experience that gave me a taste of how math can be used to solve real-world problems outside the classroom

It was a wonderful learning experience that I simply could not have gotten from a classroom.

It was an excellent opportunity quite like anything else that allowed me and my peers to dip our toes in the waters of applied math.

It was fun and new experience.

It was one of the most valuable experiences from my high school years.

It's a great competition. Very well done.

It's an incredibly fun competition that introduced me to the world of math modeling.

I've always been good at and interested in math. Moody's was a challenge that came from seemingly out of nowhere and myself and my friends didn't know how to prepare for, so the fact that we even got an honorable mention was amazing to us. I've done a few hackathon's since then but in a sense, this was my first hackathon. I really thank you guys for putting it together; it gave me a chance to work on a team with some people I've never worked with before and the challenge itself gave me a sense of confidence, that I can walk into a situation I've never been before where I'm not expected to win and then hold my own anyway.

M3 allowed me to work in a group setting on an actual problem in society, which has prepared me greatly for college classes.

M3 opened my eyes to the world of applied math and mathematical modeling. I greatly appreciate the perspective it has given me.

Moody's allowed me to be evaluated in applied mathematics by a completely unbiased eye, and it was incredibly validating. I find that, even in a university setting, a person's background and behavior significantly effects whether or not they can be successful in the conventional academic setting, but moody's eliminated those basis creating an intersectional math competition that valued not only mathematics, but creativity, teamwork, and life skills.

Moody's Mega Math Challenge was great. I hope to see it continue.

Moodys was a very rewarding experience and made me realize the importance of mathematical modeling.

Moody's was an excellent experience for me which oriented me to modeling and was my first real experience with coding/computer science my junior year, which is now my major.

Really helped bring math modeling as a field more clearly to focus.

Really inspiring experience. Life-influencing.

Really loved it!!

Thank you so much for the scholarship! It helped pay for one of my books in my first semester of school.

Thanks for allowing students to gain modeling and applied math experience! Coming from a smaller town, this opened my eyes to how people were applying math to solve real world problems.

Thanks for showing me the usefulness of math models in the real world.

Thanks for the interesting problems - I had fun during those 14 hours even though it was stressful at the time. The experience of going from research to writeup in a short span of time is something I wish I could do more often.

The challenge introduced me to Moody's which became a top choice for my career after college.

2017 M3 Challenge Past Winner Survey

The challenge was more out-of-the-box than most math competitions I participated in. It was also more real-world applicable, in that there was no clearcut method to approach the problem, nor obvious or correct solution. It encouraged teamwork and patience, as well as creativity and grit.

The experience was really great and I still think fondly about the enthusiasm and creativity we had at that time. I think it's a great opportunity to be creative and showcase the power of applied math.

The M^3 challenge gave me greater confidence in my abilities.

The M^3 challenge was a great way to get students to think about how quantitative analysis can be used to assess real-world problems and seek solutions.

The M3 Challenge really helped me understand models in academic papers/fields that I read later and how they were derived.

The M3 challenge was actually one of the most enjoyable applied math experiences I've had, so far it remains as a uniquely engaging event

The M3 may have been the first time I really thought about mathematical modeling as something that can apply generally to the world.

the problem was engaging and the competition set up was excellent! I competed on a team with some of my closest friends and we really enjoyed the experiment.

The problem was multifaceted and challenging so as to allow students a wide range of creative approaches.

The problems are approachable and interesting even for teams like mine that have little math modeling experience.

The problems are real life problems which helps the participants to finally understand how math can be implied in real life nor just x-s and y-s.

The problems were incredibly well thought out.

The program prepared me for doing real research in the work setting. The concept of facing a seemingly impossible problem when your boss doesn't have the solution directly applies in my research lab every day.

The question and the event itself were a great deal of fun

The questions always seem very well thought and I enjoy how they apply to real world problems that professionals are looking at

The trip and experience was awesome!

This competition was a wonderful experience for me. From the planning and execution of the question portion through the accommodations in the finals, this competition was extremely well run.

This is a fantastic program.

This was an incredible experience and program for learning to work in teams as well as intense research and applied math

This was the first "policy relevant" challenge I was able to participate in and see how modeling could be used on a base level, even though most of my work now requires slightly less modeling and more inference. The experience was very helpful in directing me down the path that I have now chosen.

This year, having data available to us already was very helpful. Last year, finding data on our own took significant time

Thought the whole thing was pretty fantastic.

Very well structured, and very interesting problems

Well organized!!! Nice topics ever year

I have a suggestion:

Advertise more. Do more to reach other schools.

Can't think of any

Contestants should be allowed to pause their time for 1 hour for food.

Create a Challenge at the collegiate level!

Page 39: Past Winner Survey - Moody's Mega Math Challenge · PDF fileDaniel Gao danielgaooooo@gmail.com 2015-2016 ... Evan Wilson emwilson02@gmail.com 2012 Joy Ming jump4joi@gmail.com 20102011

2017 M3 Challenge Past Winner Survey

Do subjects that are interesting for young people. If you can show them how a field or topic they are interested in can be modeled through math, that might open their eyes to the rest of the world.

Expand to more states!

Extend the challenge to the collegiate level

Give full data, some data was incomplete

Have more events (maybe smaller ones) throughout the year.

I know math is the primary focus. These days I work with machine learning models (which admittedly are mathematical). There's a recent "trend" of computational (and not necessarily complex) models for better data processing and visualization. I haven't kept up with the M3 challenge, but I hope it encourages the use of modern computational power. Not just excel, but matlab/R. Not just numerical data, but also text, audio, visual [and of course resources that let them interpret numerical features from this media].

I suggest to make this challenge an internation competition.

I think a guide on data-cleaning should be provided. The biggest problem my team faced was not knowing how to clean the data in order to get meaningful results. Looking back at it, I wish there was a guide and/or tips on how to do that.

I think it would be great to be able to see more examples of solution papers, not just those of the finalists.

I think that new teams, especially from communities/schools with little introduction of advanced modeling and computational techniques, would really benefit from seeing a sample paper with suggestions in each section for different types of answers and information, written by judges/other administrators for past competitions' prompts.

I would appreciate more resources that participants could use to learn specific math modeling skills and techniques.

I'm sure this is already something you do, but ask the kids problems that are relevant and trying to be addressed. It's likely that a usable solution or starting point is generated from the challenge.

It would be fun to do a small version of this competition for elementary school kids

It would be great to facilitate longer-term opportunities for social good and mathematical modeling, for example. I understand INFORMS has a chapter and maybe SIAM does as well; but partnerships with nonprofits to develop "mega math challenges" which can be worked on over a longer term, or incorporated as project ideas, could be a great way to showcase the power of applied math at a more sustained level.

It would be neat if you partnered with a few other employers to help past winners find internships outside of Moody's itself (eg. engineering).

keep projects nationally-oriented (e.g. the gerrymandering or high-speed rail project) as opposed to smaller-area (Lake Mead)

Last year's and this year's challenge bear many similarities in structure. Perhaps the challenges could be less predictable year-to-year.

Make it so that more teams can participate from a school, advertise more, make it available to more grade levels

Make the participants search for their own data online, do not spoon feed it to them. Searching for data is a useful skill, that high school students do not get to practice much.

Make this program larger

Maybe do more to foster team interaction at the finals.

Maybe find ways for participants to connect to each other. My school did not have very many people interested in the M3 challenge.

Moody's should be open to all high school students, not just juniors and seniors

Moody's should provide more resources to help students learn more applied mathematics to even the playing field between average high schools and advanced technology high schools

More advertising in general and around high schools specifically about this competition.

More events and competitions

Perhaps providing some resources on topics like differential equations and computer simulations would be helpful for people to read prior to the competition.

Page 40: Past Winner Survey - Moody's Mega Math Challenge · PDF fileDaniel Gao danielgaooooo@gmail.com 2015-2016 ... Evan Wilson emwilson02@gmail.com 2012 Joy Ming jump4joi@gmail.com 20102011

2017 M3 Challenge Past Winner Survey

Perhaps suggesting learning programming languages regarding data analysis to participants would allow them to do more

Provide students with a deeper understanding of machine learning before competition, if possible.

Somehow spread the word more - lots of my college peers had never heard of M3 (I know how hard publicity is).

Tell the students to take time-lapse photography of themselves over the course of the 14 hours. Seeing the sun rise and set as you scurry around is a lot of fun.

The survey is the same every year. Maybe ask people employed in STEM fields about how much and in what ways they use math/modeling?

When we presented out paper in 2015, we were unaware of what was allowed during the presentation, ie. talking to eachother or discussing question answers with each other. So we made up strange methods to signal to each other who would answer. I think it would be helpful to many if there was some direction as to what is and isn't allowed.

You should advertise this more.

I have a complaint or frustration to share:

Because the problem is so vague, there was difficulty understanding what was desired in the solution.

I actually rented a zipcar for the first time the other day and it was the worst driving experience of my life

I feel like the internship application has kind of disappeared. I wish it were more present and that I could be more updated with the status of my application. I feel like I haven't heard much from the internship program for Moody's winners, even thought it was advertised so much.

I never received my scholarship money from the competition.

I provided my resume and replied "Yes" to a continued interest email about summer internships with Moody's, but never received any followup.

I really want to intern with Moody's, but have received little sign that Moody's wants me -- a quicker process would be much appreciated!

I recalled winning scholarship money but I never saw what happened to it. It's possible I didn't fill out the forms in time or my university combined it with a generic financial aid, but it was frustrating to never see it (even if it is only a drop in the ocean of private school tuition). It didn't bother me after the first year, but I also haven't filled out a survey before.

I would actually have enjoyed seeing the judges' comments on our paper specifically.

I would loved to have participated in the internship opportunity, but was out of the country (studying abroad in Italy) from when the email was sent until registration closed, so I was unable to apply for the position.

It'd be nice if you kept my information so that I didn't have to fill everything out every year that I get this survery.

Maybe provide more documentation on relevant data, since I remember that was quite a hassle

Please don't do something like the meal planning case of 2014. I found that to be much less interesting than recycling and more relevant to something a nutritionist would like to do. A lot of the pricing models were hidden because wholesalers do not give a uniform price for every buyer.

Schools need to stress statistics more - what the heck America?

The hardest part of the challenge was figuring out what approaches to the problem were even feasible given what data was available on the Internet.

There is no real understanding in the competition of the reality that, in order to apply mathmatic solutions, one must have the situational knowledge and institutional connections that those in the humanities pursue. To this end, I would encourage Moody's to partner with a/several think tanks, aid organizations, and/or governance institutions. Such organizations could help make the contest itself and the opportunities provided to the winners more relevant to those participants that don't pursue STEM fields.

Worried that some teams abuse the freedom
