Past Events :- 25th of March, 2011 Special Screening of Pahari Feature Film "LAKEER" The Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu got screened the first ever Pahari Feature Film "LAKEER"especially for the University Fraternity at Gen. Zorawar Singh Auditorium, University of Jammu." Prof. Rajive Gupta, Director, Colleges Development and the Dean, Faculty of Sciences, was the Chief Guest on this occasion. Addressing the University Fraternity, Prof. Gupta said that it has always been an endeavor of the University to conserve and promote the Cultural Heritage of the State such as dialects, Folk lore and Communal Harmony. The screening of the Film is a step to this direction. Being a digital film, LAKEERheralds an era of regionalcinema which promises to open to new avenues of gainful employment for our young professionals and other with creative bent of mind. Shiv Dutt, the Director of film, was also felicitated on this occasion by presentation of an Award of Honour by Prof. Jasbir singh, Co-Chairman, Campus Cultural Committee and Prof. Nirmal Singh. Among others Prof. N.K. 15th of Feb., 2011 Prize Distribution Function of the “Display Your Talent” 2010-11

The team from Govt. Women College, Parade, emerged as the Over All Champion and lifted the glittering Trophy in the Prize Distribution Function of the “Display Your Talent” 2010-11 held at the Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium. The Institute of Music & Fine Arts won the Runners-Up Trophy.

Prof. Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu, was the Chief Guest on this occasion. Addressing the gathering the Vice-Chancellor, complemented the prize winners and further said that University is trying hard to promote Art & Culture. In that direction University of Jammu is going to organize the “Virasat-e-Riyasat” – A Progamme of Music, Dance & Drama. This function will provide the platform to entire state to display Cultural Heritage.

Kanwar Iqbal, from the Govt. Medical College, Jammu, bagged Prof. Y.B. Singh Memorial Trophy for overall best performance in Fine Arts. He was also adjudged as the Overall Best Student of the “Display Your Talent Contest” 2010-11 and was presented Pankaj Mohan Bhatia Memorial Trophy.

Dr. Jagmohan Singh Memorial Trophy for the best team in Debating was awarded to Govt. M.A.M. P.G College, Jammu whereas Dr. Surinder Sharma Memorial Trophy for best team in Quiz went to the School of Bio-Technology, University of Jammu.

Govt. Women College, Parade bagged Dr. J.R Sharma Memorial Trophy and Vijay Verma Memorial Trophy for overall Best Performance in Music.

Prof. Santosh Sharma Memorial Trophy for the all round best performance in Theatrical Events, was lifted by the The Business School, University of Jammu. The Best Volunteer Award was presented to Ms. Madhvi Sharma, Departmental Secretary. The mementos were presented to Gangandeep Sharma, Secretary, Students Cultural Council, Vikas Sharma, Priyanka Sharma and Shafali, Joint Secretaries and other members of Students Cultural Council. 24 to 26 February, 2011 Virasat-e-Riyasat

The University of Jammu organized State Level “Virasat-e-Riyasat”, A Students’ Festival of Music, Dance and Drama w.e.f 24 to 26 February, 2011 at Gen. Zorawar Singh Auditorium, University of Jammu.

His Excellence Sh. N.N. Vohra, the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and Chancellor of the Universities, was the Chief Guest while Sh. Nawang Rigzin Jora, Hon’ble Minister for Tourism and Culture, J&K Govt. graced the occasion as Guest of Honour at the Inaugural Ceremony. The Festival was inaugurated by His Excellency, Minister for Tourism and Culture, J&K Govt. and Prof. Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu by lighting the Ceremonial Lamp. They also released the Souvenir of the Festival.

In his Inaugural address, the Chancellor emphasized the need for preservation and effective showcasing of the rich Cultural Heritage of Jammu and Kashmir for which it has been known since centuries past. He exhorted the youth to focus on reviving and strengthening our glorious pluralistic Cultural Traditions and Heritage and work towords making India a strong and vibrant nation.

The Minister for Tourism and Culture, Sh. Nawang Rigzin Jora, addressing the gathering lauded the efforts of the University of Jammu for organizing “Virasat-e-Riyasat” and providing an opportunity to celebrate the State’s pluralistic ethos. He added that the students from across the State would showcase and also see the culture of the three regions of the State.

Prof. Varun Sahni, Vince-Chancellor, University of Jammu in his addres expressed gratitude to His Excellency the Governor who is also the Chancellor of the University for his kind support and encouragement to the University. He further hoped that the festival would emerge as a platform for celebration of our multi-culturalism, which highlights the value of compassion, love and kindness.

Students from six Universities of the different regions of the State such as University of Kashmir, Baba Ghulam Shah Badhshah University, Rajouri, Islamic University of Science and Technology, Awantipora, Srinagar, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra, SUKAST, Jammu and the host University of Jammu participated in the mega event by demonstrating their skills for three consecutive days.

The main events included Regional Folk Dances, Regional Marriage Scenes, Regional Folk Songs, Regional Folk Theatre, Regional Traditional Costumes Show, Regional Folk Instrumental Percussion, Regional Folk Instrumental Non-Percussion and an Exhibition of Folk Instruments. Prof. N.K. Tripathi, Dean Students Welfare, welcomed the guests and Prof. Versha Mehta, Chairperson, Campus Cultural Committee, presented the Vote of Thanks at the Inaugural Function.

A colourful cultural programme comprising dance from Zanskar, Laddakh, Kashmiri Folk Dance Rouf, Dogri Folk Dance Jagarna, Paddari Dance and a Pahari Folk Song “Mahiya” was also, presented on this occasion which was highy appreciated by the audience.

Sh. Raman Bhalla, Hon’ble Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabitation J&K Govt. inaugurated the Exhibition of Folk Instruments.

Mustaq Ahmed, Chairman, J&K Bank, Prof. Riyaz Punjabi, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir Prof. Irshad Ahmed Hamal, Vice-Chancellor, Baba Ghulam Shah Badhshah Univeristy, Rajouri and Tanveer Jahan, Commissioner Secretary, Higher Education, graced the various sessions of the festival as the Chief Guests and distributed prizes amongest the winners. All the dignitries were felicitated by presentation of Festival Mementos

Jb. Omar Abdullah, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Jammu and Kashmir State and Pro-Chancellor of the University, was the Chief Guest at the Valedictory Function, while Jb. Abdul Gani Malik, Hon’ble Minster for Higher Education and Er. R.S. Chib, VSM, Hon’ble Minster for Technical Education, Youth Services and Sports were the Guests of Honour. Prof. Varun Sahni, Esteemed Vice-Chancellor, presided over the function.

Interacting with the participating students, the Pro-Chancellor said that he wants whole hearted support from the people of Jammu and Kashmir in general and the youth in particulars in curbing the corruption and maintenance of peace. He further said that the Government alone is not capable to absorb the huge number of unemployed youth. Hence we have to harness the other means for the purpose and entrepreneurship sector is the most effective one in this direction. Replying to the questions on Cultural Development, the Chief Minster said that “Virasat-e-Riyasat” is a giants’ leap by the University of Jammu, this festival should be an annual feature and be held in rotation by all the Universities. The Govt. shall provide every help to the Institutions of Higher Learning in this regard, he added. Later he presented Medals and Certificates to the participating Students. The University of Jammu lifted the Chief Ministers’ Championship Trophy. The selcted items of the festival were also presnted on this occasion.

26th of January. 2011 Republic Day Celebration - 2011The 62nd Republic Day, was celebrated at University of Jammu with great enthusiasm & patJ::ioticfervor. Prof. Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor, unfurled the National Flag at Fountain Plaza and released the Tri Colour Balloons while Mrs. Sylvia. A. Sahni was the Guest of Honour on this ccasion. . Prof. Sahni, in his address said that India got freedom from the yoke of .the Britishers after a long struggle and supreme sacrifices of our great patriots. The Constitution of India was framed by a Committee, especially Constituted for the purpose and finally the same 'came into force on 26thof January, 1950 and India became a Republic State. As per provisions in the Constitution, every citizen of India have equal rights, social, economic and religious. We have freedom of expression & worship. He exhorted the University fraternity to work fervently to up hold the traditions of our great Nation and join hands to solve the problems presently being faced by the country. The Constitution provides us certain right but at the same time reminds us our duties, as well. Paying tributes to the Martyrs, he also reCited the couplet from Maithilisharan's famous poem PUSHP KI ABHILASHA, "Mujhe Tore Lena Van Mali, Uss Path Pal" Turn Dena Faink, Matribhoorni ki Raksha Hetu, Jis Path Jayen Veer Anck". Earlier Prof. N.K. Tripathi, Dean Students Welfare, delivered the welcome address. At the arrival of the Vice-Chancellor, Guard of Honour was presented by theSecurity Personal led by Capt. S.R. 27th of Jan. to 29th Jan, 2011 ALUMNI MEETA Three Day Festival of the Alumni of the "Display Your Talent", was organized by the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu and "Renaissance" - a DYT Alumni Association, from 27th to 291hJanuary, 20 II. Prof. Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor inaugurated the Fine Arts Exhibition at RhinchcnbZangpo Art Gallery by lighting the Ceremonial Lamp. Speaking'on this occasion Prof. Sahni said that this Reunion, shall certainly ronncct the Alumni with their roots and at the ~r..metime the present students shall also be benefited by their prescnce at the Campus. The freshers shall get an opportunity to interac1: with the pass out ~tudcnts, pcrform on a common platform and shall learn about the nuances of the Visual Arts, Literary, Music. Dance and Theatrical activities. Interacting with the Alumni, the Vice-Chancellor also suggested to make the Meet an Annual Event. The Alumni also put forth some suggestions. The Exhibition included the painting by Suman Gupta, Rakesh Sharma, Mahmud Anwar Alnas:z;ir, Dr. Sanjay Sharma, Reecha Mahajan, Vandana Sharma, Ankush Kesar, Dr. Atul Sharma, Jagpal Singh Bandral, Dharam Vir Singh, Cartoons by Manoj Chopra, Photographs by Nitish Arora, Rangoli by Kanwar Iqbal, Posters by Sheikh Nassir Hussain, were really a visual treat for the visitors.Tlte seco/ld day of Alumlli Meet at Brigadier Rajinder Singh Auditorium witnessed ullusual crowd that was numb-struck with the presentations that followed in quick successions Wiih SOIllCliterar) poetical recitations on famous topics of love, romance and social satire descending between tomake up the gaps. The thrill in the programme was introduced by the fabulous Punjabi dance in chorus presented by the campus students, that drew cheer for the synchronous foot-tapping music from all corners 01"the auditorium. The presentation was well responded by huge applaud which demanded for its repeal. saying 'once more, once more...'. . Dr. P.S. Pathania, Registrar, University of Jammu was the Chief Guest, while Prof. N.K.Tripathi, Dean Student Welfare and Assistant Dean Mr. Vijay Atri accompanied the Chief Guest. It was really rendezvous of the present with the past where the present students and the Alumni of the University who have pal1icipated in the "Display Your Talent" and have representcd the University in the various North Zone Inter-University and National Youth Festivals organized b) the Association of Indian Universities, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. GO\t. of India. Nc\\ Delhi, other Universities and prestigious Institutions, performed on a common platform. The Poetry Recitation by Gagandcep Sharma. Bindiya Tickoo, Geetika. Zulifh.ar. Sandecp Chauhan, Digvijay Singh and Sarang Vaid were highly appreciated.The Literary events were followed by Musical presentations. The participants included Bharat Mahajan, Gourav Sharma, Manveer Singh Laali, Avneesh Sharma, Nidhi Kaila, Vija) Sharma. Tajinder Singh, Jasmeet Kour, Poonam Mahajan, Aksa Chaman, Deep Suman, Chanchal Sharma.Rakesh SambyaL Narinder Wazir and Balbir Beera. They presented Dogri, Punjabi. II indi. English numbers and rcceived thunderous applause from the audience. Punjabi Dance presented by Baljeet, Renu and Shivani was the highlight of the programmc. The three dllY of Alumni Meet concluded with the felicitation of the Alumni, somc scintillating Cultural presentations and Sham-e-Ghazal wherein Noted Ghazal Singer Dr. Radhika Chopra and Jitendra Singh featured. PI'Of. M.R. Puri, Fonner Vice-Chancellor, was the Chief Guest on this occasion while Prof. Varun Salmi, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu presided over the fundioll. Prof. Y.R. Malhotra, Former Vice-Chancellor, graLed the Sham-e-Ghazal as the Chief Guest. Prof. Puri, was honoured with the Life Time Achievement A,,'ard as this was Prof. Puri's brain child, who started the "Display Your Talent" in 1982 when he was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jammu and this contest is very popular amongst the students even after a span of 28years. A hilarious Playlet entitled "Anpadh" on the theme of Adult Education, was highlight of the programme. Superb acting by Dr. Jagdish Mehra, Dr. Yash Pal, Mahesh Khajuira, Dheeraj .landyal, Sunil Kumar. Anju .lamwal Nagar and Dr. Anuradha Pandoh, won accolades for them. Vandana

Skit by Dr. Arvinder Aman and Amandeep, Jugalbani on Guitar and Tabla by Vikas Nagar and Neeraj Verma and Group Song presented by Poonam Mahajan, Suresh Bala, Aksa Chaman, Jasmeet Kour, Bindiya Tikoo, Anju Nagar, Chanchal Sharma, Tajinder Singh, Dcep Suman, Sum it Sh?nna. N.c:rillder Wazir, Manvil' Singh Lalli, Sunil Kumar and Sanjay Nagar. were highly appn..'ciald.M.A. Alnasir welcomed the guests while Digvijay Singh presented the Vote ofl'hanks. The programme was com peered by Zuiltkar Ahmed and Bindiya Tickoo. In the evening Radhika and Jitendra, spellbound the audience by presenting Ghazals in their sonorous voices. It may be mentioned here that the both the artists are born and brought up in Jammu. During their College Days both of them used to participate in the Inter-Collegiate Competitions under the "Display Your Talent" represented the University in various Zonal and National Youth Fcstival and brought laurels to the institution by winning number of prizes. Earlier Vijay Atri. while presenting the profile of the Department of Students Welfare, expressed gratitude ro all the Deans and Directors of the Department who contributed to the Department for providing it a new fillip, in their own ways. The Second Phase of the "Display Your Talent"20 10-11 (Music &Photography Events), an Inter- Collegiate/Departmental competition, was conducted by the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu from 2ndto 9th,December, 2010 at Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium. Under the 2nd Phase, Group Song Indian, Classical Vocal (Solo), Western Vocal (Solo), Western Group Song, Classical Instrumental Percussion and Classical Instrumental Non- Percussion, Semi Classical Vocal (Solo), Light Vocal (Solo) and Photography, competitions were conducted. Group Song Indian The team from Cosmic College of Education, Lakhanpur was adjudged First while Govt. Women College Parade and Govt. Women College Gandhi Nagar, Jammu bagged Second and Third Prize, respectively. Certificates of Merit were awarded to MIER College of Education, GCW Udhampur, Kalra College of Education, KC Gurukul College of Education and Rajiv Gandhi Memorial College of Education.

Classical Vocal (Solo)Aman Singh Choudhary from the Institute of Music & Fine Arts, Jammu bagged the First Prize whereas the Mukteshi from the Govt. Women College, Parade and Mandeep Kour from Atman College of Edcuation,' bagged the Second and Third Prize, respectively. The Certificate of Meri~ were awarded to Mridhu Jamwal from Govt. Women College, Gandhi Nagar and Poonam Devi from Govt. Women Colelge, Udhampur.Western Vocal (Solo)Harleen Kour from GCW, Parade bagged first prize in Western Vocal Solo Competition, whereas Aman Sharma from Govt. Medical College Jammu and Aashima Mahajan from The Business School both were adjudged Second while the Third prize went to Sheena Maini from the Department of English. Certificates of Merit were awarded to Apoorva Jamwal, GCW Parade, Avnish Sharma, The Law School, JUand Gurvinder Kour, Department of Political Science.Western Group SongThe team from GCW Parade bagged the Top Honour in the Western Group Song Competition. The team from the Govt. Engineering & Technology lifted the glittering Veeranna Aivalli Memorial Running Trophy in the 9th Veeranna Aivalli MemorialInter-Collegiate/Departmental Debating Competition organized by the Indian Institute of Public Administration, J&K Regional Branch and the Department ofStudents Welfare, University of Jammu at Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium. This debate is organized every year by IIPA in memory of Sh. Veeranna Aivalli (IPS), Former Chief of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security and Former Vigilance Commissioner of J&K and the Founder member of IIPA. Bandey Zain-ul-Abdeen from the Department of Political Science, University of Jammu, bagged the First Prize whereas Abhinandin Singh from Govt. College of Engineering and Technology, Jammu and Anshul Gupta from Govt. M.A.M College, Jammu, were adjudged Second and Third, respectively. Two Consolation prizes were awarded to Anjum Tahir from GGM Science College (Evening) and Rakshit Sharma from GGM Science College (Morning). The topic of the debate was In the Opinion of the House, "Excessive use of Technology in day to day Communication, is leading to loss of personal touch". Sh. The JU Cultural Team, participated in the Week long DARA SHIKOH FESTIVAL- 2010, at Srinagar, Kashmir. The team presented a short play "IDOT BABAS", a satire on the so called "BABAS", who exploit and cheat the innocent people in the name of the God. The item was well appreciated by the organizers and the othet participants. The University team included Ankita Gupta, Meenakshi Anand, Mahua Gupta, Sarang Vaid, Vikas Sharma, Syed Azhar Jawad Hasmi & Rizwan-uz-Zaman while Mr. Kulbhushan Thakur accompanied the team as Manager.In addition, the students of the University also attended the Theatre Workshop, conducted by Noted Theatre Personality and Film Actor M.K. Raina and Neeta Mahindra. Guitarist Deepak Castalino, briefed the participants about the nuances of music while Naseem Shafaie threw light on the Short Story Writing to help them to open up the creative imagination and to come up with the ideas for stories and to express them in the languageof their choice.The Festival also included illuminating lectures on "The Influence of Sufi Thought and Bhakti Traditions on Nanak and th~ Musical Tradition in sacred texts of the Sikhs by Madan Gopal Singh & "Kashmir Rishishm - A Syncretic Evaluation" by M.H. Zaffar, Eminent Educationist Neerja Mattoo spoke on "Syncretic Tradition and the Creative Life-Mystic Poets of Kashmir". A Solo Play "ALLEnbased on a Short Story in Dogri by Ved Rahi performed by Susham Sharma, "Buhe Bariyann dramatization of Four Short Stories on the lives of Women by Amrita Preetam, Ajit Kour, Kartar Singh Duggal and Veena Varma presented by Neeta Mahindra , Kashmiri Sufi Music by Yakoob, Kashmiri Folk Music by Rashid Hafiz, SufiFolk Music & Kashmiri Folk Music, Renditions of sacred Music from Sufi and Sikh Traditions by Madan Gopal Singh, Accompanied by DeepaK Castalino, Gurmeet Singh and Pritam Ghosal, Audio - Visual presentations by Lalit Gupta on "Women Artists of Jammu and Kashmir" and the "Influence of Folk and Scared Art" on his work by RajinderTikkoo, were other highlights of the Workshop.

Dr.Jyotsana Singh, was the Coordinator of the Festival.

5 th of May, 2010 A Programme of Dogri Dances

“Chhan-Chhan Panjab Meri Chanke” a programme of Dogri Dances, was organized by the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu at Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium. The young talented artists from the various Teaching Departments of the University spell bound the audience with their superb performances.

Prof. Versha Mehta, Chairperson, Campus Cultural Committee, was the Chief Guest on this occasion while Prof. Dhian S. Bhau, Director, Directorate of Sports & Physical Education, University of Jammu was the Guest of Honour.

Addressing the gathering Prof. Versha Mehta, Chairperson, Campus Cultural Committee, said that the aim of this programme was to develop a sense of appreciation for our rich Dogri Culture including Music and Dance, amongst the younger generation. She also complemented the participants for their superb performances and lauded the efforts of the Department of Students Welfare for organizing such an event.

Ruby Khajuria from the Department of Education in her dance presentation “Aayoon Glani Aan Sachch Bo, Mahre Banku Deya Chachua” reflected the hard life of the Dogras.

“Jindua Te Manmindua Do Sakke Bhara”, performed by Neena Sharma from Department of Sanskrit, received thunderous applause.

Pooja Rajput from the Department of Sanskrit, mesmerized with Dogri Folk “Chann” – “Tere Laye Tajji Ditti Lok Laj Bairiyaa, Milne Gi Aayee Tuki Shikal Daphariya”.

Manisha Sharma with her beautiful expressions and footwork impressed the audience with “Ku Ku Koyal Bole”.

Anju Bala from the Department of Home-Science, presented the Dance on Dogri Folk Song “Laung Gawai Aayee Aien, Goria Kuthen Gawai Aayee Aien”.

Suresh Kumar and Poonam Priyadarshani both from the Department of Dogri performed “Yaar Migi Meri Karai Aali Ne Mareya”.

The programme was Conceived and Designed Vijay Atri, Assistant Dean (Cultural Affairs).

The Awards of Appreciation were awarded the all the participants.

3rd April, 2010 Interaction with Art Karavan

The University of Jammu in collaboration with the Amar Mahal, Mueseum and Library organised One Day Interaction with the Art Karavan (A traveling group of national level artists & performers) This was an endevour to realize a new intimacy between Music, Dance, Theatre, Performing Art, Painting both Contemporary/Folk, Sculpture, Media, Poetry, Literature, Blogging, Discourse, etc, in a camp(s) and even while travelling from one destination to another .

Prof. R.D. Sharma, Dean Academic Affairs, was the Chief Guest on this occasion.

“OUR PLACE IS THE WORLD NOT JUST THE ART WORLD”. With this set of slogans , a group of Artists (consisting of Artists and Non-Artists) constituted the Art Karavan. The Karavan started from ShantiNiketan West Bengal on 12th of Feb. 2010. The Karavan had already travelled to Kolkatta, Ranchi, Patna, Lucknow, Dehradun, Shimla and after Jammu their next destination is Srinagar and finally Karavan will culminate at Delhi on 12th April 2010. Art-Karavan-Artists have been doing what ideally fits into the activities of this art-camp-travel event. So, a PERFORMANCE ART based event.

Dr. P.S. Pathania, Registrar in his welcome address, appreciated the role of Karavan and said that Art and Culture sees no boundaries and this is what Karavan speaks for.

To create spaces for collaborative activities with local artistic talents, the Jammu stage was coordinated and initiated by Mrs. Jyotsna Singh ,Advisor, Amar Mahal , Mueseum and Library.

Prof. Anita Baillawria and Dr. Poonam Choudhary gave their power point presentation on Art, Culture, History & Heritage of the region while a photo presentation about the Cultural & Literary Activities of the University was also screened. A thought provoking Skit entitled “Three Idiots Babas” presented by Sarang Vaid, Vikas Sharma, Rizvan, Azhar Jawad Hashmi, Ankita Gupta and Meenakshi Anand, all Students of the University , was highly appreciated.

In the honour of ‘Art Kaarvan’ Natrang performed its internationally acclaimed Dogri Play ‘Bawa Jitto’ at Gen. Zorawar Singh Auditorium. The show was organized & supported by University of Jammu. Scripted by Padamshree Prof. Ram Nath Shastri & Directed by Balwant Thakur. The play has been critically acclaimed as one of the most creative theatre work produced in the country during the post India Independence period. The production of the play ‘Bawa Jitto’ is set in the rural backdrop, this 15th century Folk tale portrays the age-old saga of exploitation of landless farmers by landlords. A team of thirty professional actors of Natrang enliven the six hundred year old saga in a magical style. Arvind Anand as Bawa Jitto performed in a highly professional manner and kept the audience spellbound. Renu Sharma as Chachi Jojan was at her best in portraying an unusual character. Juhi singh as Bua Gauri ably performed the role. Anil Tickoo as Malli. Suresh Kumar as Mehta Beer Singh , Sanjeev Gupta as Isso, Vijay Bhatt as Sarpanch were so prefect in their portrayals that perople were stunned to see their powerful acting. Neeraj Kant as Rullo and Sajra Qadir as Jeuni gave impressive performances. Others who did multiple roles on stage include Dimple Sharma, Mohit Sharma, Rohit Verma, Gourav Jamwal, Pankush Verma, Pawan Verma, Rahul Singh, Gauri Thakur, Mohd. Yaseen, Prashant Sagar, Sona Singh, Richa Sharma, Rajani Bhatti, Amarpreet Kandhari, Romilla Besnet, Bipin Gupta, Ankush Lakhanotra & Ajay Kumar.

The lights were designed and executive by Suraj Ganjoo and Sumeet Sharma coordinated the show.

10th of April, 2010 “RESURGENCE” 2010

In the recently concluded “RESURGENCE” 2010, an Inter-University Youth Festival, organized by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra, the Jammu University Team lifted the Chancellor’s Trophy by virtue of winning Eight Prizes in various Cultural & Literary Events.

Kanwar Iqbal, Rameshwari Slathia and Mahua Gupta bagged the First Prize in Rangoli.

Priya Raina, in Classical Solo Dance competition with her superb footwork& expressions, adjudged First in the said event.

Gagandeep Sharma was adjudged First in Poetry Competition whereas Arjun Sharma bagged the First Prize in Cartooning.

The Skit performed by Ankita Gupta, Meenakshi Anand, Sarang Vaid, Sayad Azhar Javad Hashmi, Vikas and Rizwan bagged the Second Prize. The powerful script & excellent acting by the students received thunderous applause.

Vinu Sharma, clinched Third Prize in the Western Vocal Singing.

Priya Raina soulful rendition in folk singing bagged Third Prize in Light Vocal Solo.

The performance of Neha Jamwal in Non-Classical Dance was also highly appreciated and clinched the First Prize.

Prof. Varun Sahni, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor invited the Cultural Troupe to his office Chamber and felicitated the team members. The winning troupe dedicated Chancellor’s Trophy to the Vice-Chancellor as it is under his able leadership, the University is scaling new heights. The Cultural Troupe gave the detailed presentation about their performances. Prof. Sahni said that it is spirit, drive and dedication like yours that have made our University what it is today. We are proud of you.

Prize Distribution Function of the “Display Your Talent” 2009-10By virtue of winning the maximum number of prizes in the Fine Arts, Literary, Music, Dance and Theatrical competitions, conducted by the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu under the “Display Your Talent” 2009-10, the team from Govt. Women College, Gandhi Nagar, emerged as the Over All Champion and lifted the glittering Trophy in the Prize Distribution Function held at the Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium in an impressive manner. Govt. Women College, Parade, again had to settle for the Runners-Up Trophy.

Prof. Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu, was the Chief Guest while Mrs. Sylvia A. Sahni, was the Special Guest on this occasion . Addressing the gathering the Vice-Chancellor, complemented the prize winners and hoped that the talented students shall perform well in the forth coming Zonal as well as National Youth Festivals and bring laurels to the University.

Govt. Women College, Parade clichéd Dr. J.R Sharma Memorial Trophy and Vijay Verma Memorial Trophy for overall Best Performance in Music.

Prof. Santosh Sharma Memorial Trophy for the all round best performance in Theatrical Events, was lifted by the Govt. Women College, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu.

Medals and Special Mementos were awarded to Priya Raina and Rahul Kumar for excelling in the National Youth Festival, held at Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak in Mimicry & Light Vocal Music, respectively. 15 th of March, 2010 “VIRASAT”-2010

“Virasat” – 2010, a programme of Marriage Songs, was organized by the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu in an impressive manner, here at Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium. Attired traditionally and bejeweled beautifully, the young participants from the various Institutions presented Suhag, Ghorian and Sithnian.

The participants mesmerized the audience with their superb performances. Pangs of separation of a daughter from her family in the Suhag “Babal Dharm Karendeya Migi Rakhi Lai Ajj Di Raat Ve”, “Khalla Desa Maaye Merariai Do Banjare Aaye”, “Meri Bedi De Bolde Ne Tote, Tusi Boldee Kyon Nayeen”, “Kankaan Pakkian, Sittey Daali Hoye, Dhian Jammiyan, Behre Khali Hoye” virtually moved the audience.

The joy of the happiest ceremony of the life – Marriage, flowed through the Ghoris “Chchap Gayian Akhbaran Veera Ji Tere Shagnan Diyan”, “Mathye Te Chamakan Bal Mere Bannade De”.

While Sithnian “Aaja Ve Ladeya Sade Karkhane, Tenu Lohe Da Kamm Sikha Deyeye, Teri Maan De Ban Jaye Railgaddi, Tere Piyo Da Engine Bana Deyeye” and “Ajj Kidder Gayeian Ve Parimindra Terian Nankian” created lots of humor.

The set was beautifully designed by Kanwar Iqbal and Neeraj Sharma, using Palanquin, “Bedi“, “Daryaas” and “Toran” etc. The Folk Designes prepared on the Walls created an atmosphere of a Village Marriage.

Speaking on this occasion Vijay Atri, Assistant Dean (Cultural Affairs) said that “VIRASAT” is an endeavor to develop a sense of appreciation towards our rich cultural heritage and folk music, amongst the younger generation because they are the real stakeholders of our traditions, folk music and folk forms of the theatre.

The School for Visual and performing Arts, Design & Architecture (SVAPADA) in association with Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu, organized an Odissi Dance Recital by Dr. Sonal Mansingh at General Zorawar Singh Auditorium Complex, University of Jammu. The presentation was symbolic of removing darkness and impurity of Spiritual Ignorance by constant endeavor to rise above and open up to the sun of Spiritual knowledge and Cosmic Consciousness. Dr. Sonal set the stage ablaze by her thundering performance. The performers mesmerized the audiences with the deadly maneuvers combined with dance, music and colorful attire. She was accompanied by Sangeet Acharaya Shri Bankim Sethi (Vocal), Shri. Abrar Husain (Sarod), Shri. P.K. Maharana (Pakhawaj), Shri. Aslam Parvez (Tabla), Shri. Rajat Prasanna (Flute) and Shri. Sharad Kulshreshta (Special light and Sound effect). Dr. Sonal Mansingh is perhaps the finest exponent of Odissi & Bharatnatyam, two of India’s oldest and richest dance forms.   In her illustrious career spanning almost fifty years, she has performed in 82 countries as well as extensively within India. Acknowledged as a master in interpreting India and its traditions through dance and related artistic traditions, she has to her credit many original choreographies based on Indian mythology as well as contemporary issues.

In recognition of her complete devotion and life-long commitment to dance and her singular contribution to enriching Indian Culture, Dr. Sonal Mansingh was awarded the “Padma Bhushan” in 1992. In 2003, she became India’s first woman dancer to be honoured with “Padma Vibhushan”, the second highest civilian honour in India. The School for Visual and performing Arts, Design & Architecture (SVAPADA) in association with Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu, conducted a One Day Workshop. The Workshop was opened for Students, Scholars, Alumni and Artistes. The Workshop was led by Artistic Director Dr. Sonal Mansingh, Padma Vibhushan. The goal of the Workshop was to give the participants an idea about different aspects of Classical Dance and help them to understand and appreciate the dance form.

The Workshop started with an introduction of the Dance form and a brief history of how this century old dance has evolved to what it is today. The participants has the opportunity to learn some of the basic movements, hand gesture, poses and facial expressions of the dance style . Dr. Mansingh explained the participants that Indian Classical Dance Forms gyrate around the “nine rasas or emotions”. Hasya (Happiness), Krodha (anger), Bhibasta (Disgust), Bhaya (fear), Shoka (Sorrow), Viram (Courage), Karuna (compassion), Adbhuta (wonder) and Shanta (serenity). She also stressed that how dance help a person to develop self –confidence. Quoting her own example how she was able to recover from a fatal accident which happened way back in 24 August, 1974 in Germany. She was driving along with her German Fiancé when her car met with an accident. X-rays showed that her 12 th vertebra was injured. She lost all reflexes in her toes, knees, ankles and elbows. It was her earlier training in dancing which gave her self-confidence and was able to recover back to dancing in year & a half.

Dr. P.S. Pathania, spoke on the occasion and expressed his sincere gratitude to Dr. Sonal Mansingh and further said that it is an experience of life time to see her perform.

Priya Raina form Department of English, University of Jammu and Rahul Kumar from Institute of Music & Fine Arts, Jammu, brought laurels by winning Second Prize in the Mimicry Competition and the Third Prize in the Light Vocal Solo, respectively, in the Inter-University National Youth Festival, organized by the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi and the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India at Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohatak (Haryana).

Women College, Parade bagged the Third prize in the Classical Vocal (Solo). Certificate of Merit was awarded to Amneet Kour from Govt. Women College, Gandhinagar.

Padam Kalotra from Institute of Music & Fine Arts bagged First whereas Ashish Attri from Govt. Degree College, Kathua.and Gurpreet Singh from Sant Mela Singh College of Education bagged the Second and Third Prize, respectively in Classical Instrumental (Solo) Percussion.

Rohit Sharma from Institute of Music & Fine Arts was adjudged First Prize whereas Pooja Sharma from MIER College of Education and Sheetal from Institute of Music & Fine Arts, bagged the Second and Third Prize, respectively. Sonam Mahajan from Govt. Women College, Parade got the Certificate of Merit in Classical Instrumental (Solo) Non-Percussion.

College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, was adjudged as the Best Play in the ONE ACT PLAYS Competition “Hassa–Manasa” a play in Dogri, presented by the team from Govt. College for Women, Parade and “Nishkarsh” a play in Hindi performed by the P. G Integrated Team, Jammu University, bagged the Second and Third Prizes, respectively.

Vandana Sharma from the Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar as “Vinodini Dasi” in the play “Nati Vinodini”, was adjudged as the Best Actress whereas Aparna Kapoor who performed the role of “Chanchlo” in the play “Hassa–Manasa” and Preeti Choudhary as “Media Anchor” in “Nishkarsh”, bagged the Second and Third prize, respectively for their individual acting.

In male category, Gagandeep Sharma, who acted as “Mantri” in the play “Nishkarsh” was adjudged as Best Actor whereas Arjun Sharma as “Budda” in “Nishkarsh” and Mukesh Chalotra as “Raja” in “Nayaan Raje Da” bagged the Second and Third best Actor awards , respectively.

Divjyot Kour from the GGM Science College, Evening as “Sharabi” in “Nayaan Raje Da”, Neha Jamwal from the P.G Integrated Team as “Sipahi” in “Nishkarsh” and Vishal Sharma from Guru Gang Dev Ji College of Education as “Sudama” in “Sachchi Mitrata” were awarded the Certificates of Merit.

In Mime competition, the team from the Govt. Women College, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, emerged as the winner whereas GGM Science College (Evening), Jammu and Bhartiya College of Education, Udhampur bagged the second and third prize, respectively. The Certificates of Merit were awarded to the Govt. Women College, Parade, Jammu and MIER College of Education.

In Mimicry Competition, Sanjeet Dogra from the J.K. College of Education, Kunjwani stole the show by imitating the voices of Cine figures, and clinched the First prize whereas Sarang Vaid from Department of Computer Science & I.T, University of Jammu and Rani Kumari from Govt. Women College, Parade were adjudged as the Second and Third, respectively.

In Mono-Acting Competition, Neha Choudhary from Govt. Women College, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu bagged the First Prize whereas Sarang Vaid from Department of Computer Science & I.T, University of Jammu and Arjun Sharma from Department of Mathematics, University of Jammu had to remain satisfied with Second and Third prize, Respectively.

“Nagari – 2010” a Skit in Hindi, presented by the team from Govt. College for Women, Parade, clinched the First Prize. “Three Idiot Babas” a Skit by the P.G. Integrated Team, University of Jammu and “Sab Bikta Hai” by the Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar bagged the Second and Third Team Trophy, respectively. “Uf Yeh Reality” a Skit performed by the team from GGM Science College (Morning), bagged the lone Certificate of Merit.

The Best Actor prize was awarded to Sarang Vaid for his superb piece of acting in Skit Three Idiot Babas and Rani Kumari from Govt. College for Women, Parade bagged the Best Actress Award for her acting in Skit Nagari – 2010.

The Certificates of Merit for individual acting were awarded to Ankita Gupta from P.G. Integrated Team, University of Jammu in “Three Idiot Babas”, Divjot Kour and Mukesh Kumar both from GGM Science College, Evening for acting in “Western Lohri”, Sapna and Navneet both from Cosmic College of Education, Lakhanpur in ”Chandrayan”, Sahil for “Uf Yeh Relality”, Shivani Sharma from K.C.S College of Education for Women for the Skit “Anpadata” and Sumit Kotwal from Govt. 26th of January, 2010 Flag Hoisting DayThe 61st Republic Day was celebrated by University of Jammu with patriotic fervour and gaiety. Prof. Varun Sahni, Hon’ble Vice-

Chancellor hoisted the National Flag and released the balloons. Mrs Sylvia. A. Sahni was Guest of Honour on this occasion. The dignitaries were received by Prof. N.A. Ganai, Dean Academic Affairs, Dr. P.S. Pathania, Registrar, Prof. R.D. Sharma, Controller of Examination, Prof. J.S. Tara, Dean Students Welfare, Prof. G.M. Bhat, Chairman, Campus Cultural Committee, Prof. Kuldeep .K. Sharma, Director, DIQA and Prof. N.K. Tripathi to the venue. The security staff of the University led by Capt. S.R. Dubey presented the Guard of Honour. The presence of campus children in large number added colour to the event.

Addressing the University fraternity, the Hon’ble Vice-chancellor congratulated one and all said that we have to grow from strength to strength as a Nation. Each one of us must contribute in nation building in own humble ways. Prof. Sahni paid tributes to the great martyrs who laid down their lives for our better future. He exhorted the University Fraternity to work fervently for the nation as well as for the Institution.

10 th of December, 2009 Human Rights Day  A function was organized by The Law School in collaboration with Department of Student Welfare and Campus Cultural Committee, University of Jammu to celebrate Human Rights Day i.e 10th of December, 2009. The Dias was shared by Justice Bashir-Ud-Din, Chairman, Human Rights Commission (J&K State), Prof. N.A. Ganai, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu, Prof. Lalita Parihar, Director, The Law School, Prof. G.M.Bhatt, Chairman, Campus Cultural Committee and Prof. J.S.Tara, Dean Students Welfare. Prof. Lalita Parihar, Director, The Law School welcomed the Chief Guest and other dignitaries. In her welcome address she applauded the efforts of Justice Bashir-ud-Din, as Judicial Officer where he discharged his duties quite effectively and efficaciously in different capacities. While speaking about the achievements of Justice Bashi-ud-Din, she pointed out that he has remained in the forefront of protecting the rights of the students and guarded their interest while being chairman of constitutional and statutory committee to supervise and monitor the transparency, fairness and non-exploitative practices in the process of admission of students to professional courses. Chief Guest Justice Bashir-ud-Din, Chairman, Human Rights Commission laid stress on the different aspects of Human Rights. He in his address also made a reference to Indian Culture, based on teachings of Rigveda, Manusmriti, Ashoka, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism etc, wherein the Human Rights and Humanitarian Principles have been the cornerstone of our national ethos. He also threw light on the historical background, present working of State Human Right Commission and various amendments which have taken place from time to time. In his concluding remarks he expressed the hope that to imbibe the human rights, knowledge and develop the right skills, we need to update purpose-oriented serving/delivery system and put in place progressive rights mechanism and commitment to compassionate, orderly and just culture stemming from basic human values. Veeranna Aivalli Memorial Inter-Collegiate/Departmental Debating Competition organized by the Indian Institute of Public Administration, J&K Regional Branch and the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu. Navjot Singh from Govt. College of Engineering and Technology, Jammu bagged the First Prize while Pryati Sharma from Govt. Women College, Gandhi Nagar and Bharti Mathur from Guru Gang Dev Ji College of Education were adjudged Second and Third, respectively. Two Consolation prizes were awarded to Aashima Puri from Govt. College of Engineering and Technology and Shreya Sharma from Govt. Women College, Parade. The topic of the debate was In the Opinion of the House, “Constituency Development Fund has Failed to Achieve the Desired Results”. Prof. Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor, was the Chief Guest while Dr. S.S. Bloeria, Chairman, IIPA, presided over the Valedictory Function. Sh. Kuldeep Khuda, the Director General of Police J&K, was the Guest of Honour & Sh. Girish Aivalli was the Special Guest. Sh. Vikrant Kuthiala gave brief introduction of IIPA and the motive of the debate.  Prof. N.R. Sharma, Sh. Jagdish Chander and Sh. S.K. Gupta were the Adjudicators while Sh. Vinay Thusoo acted as Rapporteur. Welcome address was delivered by Dr. G.N. Aivalli praised the qualities of his head and heart.  The participants who spoke for the motion were of the views that CDF was established in 1993 under the control of Ministry of Rural Development, Since funds, released directly to the district authorities and are responsible for the audit of the same. Therefore due to the direct channel of funds and no other major check and criterion involved, it has become very easy for the bureaucrats and politicians to channelise these funds for their own personal benefits. In order to strengthen the view point for the motion one of the participant quoted the scam in 2006 CDF corruption exposed by a News Channel. Prof. N.A. Ganai, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu, was the Chief Guest. Speaking on the occasion Prof. Ganai, said that the Display Your Talent had a modest beginning in 1982-83 and has now blossomed to its full. Some of the artists passed from this platform have earned a good name and fame and got even National and International recognition in the field of Theatre, Music and Fine Arts etc. He further said that he is emotionally attached with the Department of Students Welfare as he was appointed as the First Dean Students Welfare after the change of nomenclature of the position of Director, Youth Welfare, University of Jammu.  In his address Prof. N.A. Ganai also complimented the prize winners and eulogized the efforts of the Department of Students Welfare for providing suitable platform to the students to exhibit their talent. The proceedings were conducted by Rameshweri Slathia, Secretary, Students Cultural Council. 01 November To 30th of November, 2009Election of Students Cultural Council The election for the positions of One Secretary and Three Joint Secretaries of the Students Cultural Council 2009-10 was conducted by the Department of Students Welfare. Bhat, Prof. Versha Mehta, Prof. J.S.Tara, Dean Students Welfare, Dr. Parmeshwari Sharma, Dr. Sucheta Pathania & Vinay Thusoo, Public Relations Officer.Addressing the participants, Prof. G.M. Bhat said that the endeavor of the Department of Students Welfare as well as the Campus Cultural Committee, is to provide suitable platform to the students to exhibit their talent. He expressed his proud feeling over the abundance of talent in the campus as well as affiliated colleges. 28th of October, 2009 Debate on Population EducationNavjot Singh from Govt. College of Engineering and Technology, Jammu was adjudged as the best debater in the Inter-Collegiate/Departmental Debating contest organized by the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu. Pryati Sharma from Govt. College for Women, Gandhinagar and Ramnik Singh from GGM Science College, Morning clinched Second and Third prize, respectively. Certificate of Merit was awarded to Heena Jain form Govt. College of Engineering and Technology, Jammu. The winners were presented the cash awards of Rupees Two Thousand, Rupees One thousand Five Hundred, Rupees One thousand and Rupees Five Hundred respectively. The topic of the debate was In the opinion of the House, “The Over Population is a Threat to the Sustainable Development”. The participants expressed their views for and against the motion.Prof. G.M. Bhat, Chairman, Campus Cultural Committee was the Chief Guest. Speaking on this occasion Prof. Bhat exhorted the younger generation to participate in the extra curricular activities with enthusiasm. He further advised the participants that for any competition, they should plan their presentations keeping in mind, the contents of the speech, the time allowed, backed by the data and scientific findings. 30th of October, 2009 Debate on Cooperative Movement

Rohini Mahajan from the Govt. College for Engineering & Technology, Jammu, bagged the top honour by winning the First Prize in the Inter-Collegiate Debating Contest on the topic, In the Opinion of the House, “GLOBALIZATION HAS POSED A THREAT TO THE CO-OPERATIVE SECTOR IN INDIA.” The competition was organized by the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu. Vandana Sharma and PryatiSharma both from the Govt. College for Women College, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu bagged the Second and Third Prize respectively. The lone consolation prize went to Tanvir Ahmed from the P.G Department of English, University of Jammu. The participants while expressing their views in favour of motion said that the Westerners are less in number and Globalization invites challenge of competitiveness. Indian Cooperative Sector with a Govt. backbone, is not still ready. Cooperative is a movement of solidarity and through this movement, we should have been able to provide a tougher competition to the world market but the Cooperative Movement in India, by itself being a failure, gets threatened due to Globalization.Speaking against the motion the students were of the opinion that swimming into the current of traditions, is good but sinking into them is definitely suicide. The need of Cooperative is not to sink in traditions but to sail with the boat of Globalization. Through innovations and new vision people can turn their dreams into reality. The Prizes to the winners were awarded by Prof. J.S Tara, Dean Students Welfare and Sh. P.KKoul, Joint Registrar, University of Jammu. The 62nd Independence Day was celebrated by University of Jammu with patriotic fervour and gaiety. Prof. Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor hoisted the National Flag and released the balloons. Mrs. Sylvia. In connection with the World Environment Dayan impressive rally was taken out by the Department of Students Welfare, Department of Environmental Sciences and the Office of the N.S.S Co-ordinator, University of Jammu in association with the Department of Environment &Remote Sensing and the State Pollution Control Board, Jammu, here at the University Campus. "Prof. Varun Salmi, Esteemed Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu, flagged-off the rally. In his message to the University fraternity, Prof. Sahni said that Pollution prevalent in our environment, is rentlessly on the rise, despite some corrective measures. It is at present, one of the gravest problems, being faced, not only be one nation, but by the entire world as the horrendous effects of environmental pollution, is harming the whole mankind. He further said that it is the duty of all, whether as an individual or in a collective capacity, to save the environment. Fumes of the automobiles, harmful smoke belching out of the chimneys of the factories, foul smell emanating from filth and rubbish and unhygienic conditions, pollute our environment. The depletion of Ozone layer is another cause to worry for environmentalists, theworld over. The disturbances in ecological system due to excessive deforestation, has aggravated this menace. To curb the environmental pollution, preventive measures on a massive scale should be implemented before it is too late. The Faculty members, Officers, Staff, Research Scholars and the students, were carrying the Banners and the placard with slogans such as "One person's sound is another's headache", "Say no to Polythene Bags", "Help the Mother Earth", Together we can save the Earth", "Wood is good but the tree is better" and "Think Green Go Green" etc.Talking to the media persons on this occasion Prof. J.S Tara, Dean Students Welfare said that the objective of the rally is to aware the people about the hazards of pollution, especially about the polythene bags in wake of the recent order of the Government imposing ban on manufacturing and use of polythene bags. 26th of June. 2009International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

In connection with the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu organized an Exhibition of Posters in impressive manner, here at the Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium. The exhibition was inaugurated by Prof. B.P.S. Sehgal, Dean Academic Affairs. In his message to the youth, Prof. Sehgal, emphasized the importance of being on guard against Drugs. He further said that we should organize such events periodically to keep the campaign against Drug abuse, alive and also eulogized the endeavor of the Department of Students Welfare for holding this exhibition against the menace of drugs and acquaint the University fraternity with the steps to be taken against drug abuse and the illicit trafficking in narcotics drugs as well as psychotropic substances. Prof. J.S Tara, Dean Students Welfare appealed to the faculty to contribute in checkingthis menace. He said that suddendrop in performance of the students should be viewed suspis:iously. The hostel rooms be checked randomly and the information on Drugs and its ill effects, be disseminated amongst youth. June 3rd, 2006Folk Music Concert

The Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu organised a Folk Music Concert here at Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium. The budding folk Singers from the campus that included the students, pursuing Post Graduate courses as well as the Research Scholars enthralled the audience by presenting Dogri and Punjabi traditional folk songs in their melodious voices. The participants included Mukti Talwar from the Department of Education, Chanchal Sharma from the Department of Dogri, Sunil from the Department of Commerce, Nighat Naz from the Department of English , Varun Kotwal from the Department of Law, Ranjit Singh from the Department of Sociology and Mool Raj from the Department of Urdu.Awards of appreciation were awarded to the artists by Prof. Keshav Sharma, Dean Students Welfare. In connection with the International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking, the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu, organised an Exhibition of Posters here at the Brig. Speaking on this occasion, Prf. Sharma said: that this problem continues to be serious and multifaceted. Drug abuse by injection is becoming one of the main reasons in the increase of DIV I AIDS. He further exhorted the youth that, they should work for the treatment and rehabilitation of drug abusers as well as the methods to combat drug trafficking on the borders between the various countries needs to be strengthened. Dr. Shohab Inayat Malik, Asstt. Dean (SW) welcomed the guests. The function was attended by the Faculty Members, Staff and Students of the University.

August 15, 2006Celebrations of Independence Day

The Independence Day was celebrated at the University Campus with patriotic fervour and gaiety. Prof. Amitabh Mattoo, Vice-Chancellor, unfurled the National flag at the University Fountain Plaza and released the balloons. The students from the University girls hostels presented National Anthem. The Patriotic songs were played and the sweets were also distributed on this occasion. Earlier at the arrival of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, the guard of honour was presented by the Security staff of the University led by Capt. S.R Dubey. Prof. Amitabh Mattoo was escorted to the dais by Prof. G.S Sambyal, Registrar, University of Jammu, Dr. P.S Pathania, Dean Students Welfare. While addressing the University Fraternity Prof. Mattoo remembered the great patriots, who laid their present for our better future. He said that the Nations those do not remember their Heros, perish early. He exhorted the faculty members, non-teachers, Research Scholars and students of the University to work fervently for the Nation and the Institute. If you perform your duty with full dedication, it will be great contribution towards the society as well as the country.

September 28, 2006 All India Devotional Song Competition

Ms. Mukti Talwar from the Department of Education and Mr. Sunil Bhagat from the Department of Commerce, University of Jammu, were deputed for participation in the All India Devotional Song Competition jointly organised by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and J&K Tourism Department at Katra as a part of Navratra Festival. Ms. Mukti Talwar brought laurels to the institution by winning the Third Prize in the All India Devotional Song Competition. Her performance is highly appreciated by the experts, organizers as well as the audience.

The Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu organised a Talent Hunt Programme here at the Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium. Prof. Devinder Singh, Dean Academic Affairs, was the Chief Guest while Prof. N.R Sharma, Chairman, Campus Cultural Committee presided over the function. The jam-packed hall echoed with the exuberance Dogri, Punjabi, Rajasthani as well as the Western Dances, Mimicry and Vocal Music. Prof. Devinder Singh, Dean Academic Affairs, addressing the gathering appreciated the participants for their superb performances and hoped that these talented students shall bring laurels to the institution by winning awards in various competitions. He further eulogized the staff of Department of Students Welfare for organizing such a wonderful programme. Prof. Singh presented Awards of Appreciation to the participants. Earlier Dr. P.S Pathania, Dean Students Welfare in his welcome address said that the students of the University have talent in abundance. Our endeavor is to provide a suitable platform to the budding artists of the campus, for exhibiting their talent. He also numerated the forthcoming events being organised by the Department. Dr. Shohab Inayat Malik, Asstt. Dean (S.W) briefed the audience about the objective of the programme.

November 11, 2006 Debating Contest on Population

As desired by the Indian Association of ,Parliamentarians on Population and Development, an Inter-Collegiate/Departmental Debating Contest was orgainsed by the Department of Students . Welfare. Vinay Kumar. from the Department of Sociology, University of Jammu was adjudged First in the said contest. Divya Sharma from GWC, Parade and Vijay Kumar from Guru Nanak College of Education, Jallo Chak secured second and third position respectively. Certificates of Merit were awarded to Nivedita Prashar and Priya Sharma both from Government Medical College, Jammu. The topic for the Debate was, In the opinion of the House "The Development of India is closely connected with the Population of the Country".

November 17-18, 2006 Inter-University National Debate

The Department of Students Welfare deputed Mr. Vinay Kumar from the Department of Sociology, University of Jammu and Divya Sharma from Women College, Parade, in the inter-University Debation contest conducted by the Indian Association of Parliamentarians on Population and Development , New Delhi on November 17-18, 2006. Mr. Vinay Kumar brought laurels to the University by winning 4th position in the said competition. He was awarded a trophy and a cash award of Rs. 1000/- and a commendation certificate. Sixty four students from 32 Universities from all over India participated in the said debate. The topic of the Debate was "Migration Improves Environment"

November 29, 2006 Debating Contest on Cooperatives

The Department, on the request made by National Council for Cooperative Training, New Delhi, orgainsed an InterCollegiate/Departmental Debating contest. on Cooperative Movement. Vinay Kumar from Department of Sociology was adjudged first in the said Debating Competition. Suptiya Sharma. from MC Khalsa College of Education and Tanvi Mahajan from Government Women College, Udhampur bagged second and third prize respectively. The motion for the debate was in the opinion of the House: "Economic and Social Empowerment of Underprivileged can be made possible only through Cooperatives"

November 30, 2006 Performance by Pt. Rajan and Sajan Mishra

The Department of Students Welfare in association with the SPIC MACAY (Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth) J&K State Chapter, organised a perfrmance by Pt. Expressing their views on the topic, the students said that even today, more than ten decades after the publication of "HIND SW ARAJ" in 1909, many concerned Indians are slowly and intentionally, calling for the acceptance of the concept, as alternative development model. In particular, the moral values, which Gandhiji practically illustrated in the Hind Swaraj, are the proper answers to the ever-intensifying crisis, now fronting the nation. They highlighted the Six ethical and moral principles i.e SWADESHI, APARlGRAHA, BREAD-LABOUR, TRUSTEESHIP, NON-EXPLOITATION & EQUALITY TOGETHER.Prof. Ved Ghai, Prof. Rita Jitendra and Dr. Anurag Gangal were among the adjudicators.

December 14. 2006 Sa Ma Pa Alaap-A Festival of Indian Classical & Sufi Music

The Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu in colloboration with Sa Ma Pa-Sopori Academy of Music and Performing Arts, arranged a Lecture cum Demonstration, which included Sufi vocal by Ragini Rainu, and Santoor Recital by Abhay Rustum Sopori at the Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium, University of Jammu. Abhay Rustum Sopori started his recital with Raga Kaushik Ranjani, an evening raga followed by some musical compositions. Ragini Rainu presented Sufi Lyrics penned down by Shah Abdul Latif Butai and Bulleshah. Her rendition was followed by a Kabir Bhajan. Dr. P.S Pathania, Dean Students Welfare delivered the welcomc address while Prof. N.R Sharma, Chairman Campus Cultural Committee presented the vote of thanks. December 16, 2006 5th Veeranna Aivalli Memorial Debating Competition

The Department of Students Welfare in collaboration with Indian Institute of Public Administration, J&K. Regional Branch organized the 5th Veerana Aivalli Memorial Inter-Collegiate Debating Contest. 56 participants from various P.G. Deparullents of the University and its Affiliated Colleges participated in the event. The topic of the Debate was: In the Opinion of the f-Iouse "Educational Institutions should not be allowed to become arena of political activity". Manju Sharma, P.G College Udhampur stood First and was awarded a cash prize of Rs. 1500/- Pravesh Kumar of R.K College of Education, stood Second and was awarded a cash prize of Rs. 1000 / - Consolation prizes were awarded to Magandeep Kour, Hina Jain and Navjot Singh.The team from Govt. College of Engineering and Technology, Jammu bagged the 5th Veeranna Aivalli Memorial Trophy for being the best team of the contest. Prof. Amitabh Mattoo, Vice-Chancellor, was the Chief Guest on this occasion while Sh. Gopal Sharma, IPS, Director General of Police was the Guest of Honour. The function was presided over by Dr. S.S Beloria, Former Chief Secretary of J &K State and Chairman of IIPA. Mrs. Swarna Aivalli, wife of Late Sh. Veeranna Aivalli specially arrived Jammu along with her two sons to attend the function. Dr. Ashok Bhan, Honarary Secretary, IIPA delivered the welcome address whereas Keshav Sharma, J t. December 17-21. 2006 North Zone Inter-University Youth Festival

A Cultural Troupe from the University was deputed for participation in the North Zone Inter-University Youth Festival hosted by Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar from December 17-21, 2006. The team brought laurels to the institution by winning four prizes, second in Western Vocal solo, third in Clay Modelling, Rangoli and Collage. The participants included Manvi Gupta, Himani Jain, Surbhi Dubey, Neha Talwar, Himani Kapoor, Sehrish Asgar, Rishi Kumar, Prabhat Kumar Jha, Deepak Dogra, Vikas, Rajinder Pal Singh, Naveen Sharma, Stanzin Egrnen and Kuldeep Ojha. The Final Phase of Display Your Talent Contest 2006-07 (Inter-Collegiate/Departmental Cultural Competition) was organised by the Department of Students Welfare from February 19 to 25, 2007. February 28, 2007Visit of Cultural Troupe of Kashmir University

The Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu arranged an interactive session with the members of the Cultural & Literary Club of the students or the University of Kashmir here at Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium.. The topic or discussion was mainly concerned with the burning issue, "HOW TO WIDEN Till: HORIZON OF HIGHER EDUCATION," so that the sense of alienation is minimized from a large chunk of society, specifically the ones who are not privileged enough to receive higher education. The Interactive session was followed by a Cultural Programme wherein the students or both the Universities displayed their creative pursuits. The students from Kashmir University visited Gen. Zorawar Singh Auditorium and different faculties of the Jammu University. The School of Visual and Performing Arts, Design and Architecture in collaboration WIth the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu, organized a Special Lecture on "DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY IN INDIAN FILMS" by Pushpa Koshal, Vice-President, Marketing and Public Relations (FILMS) A VITEL POST STUDIOS, MUMBAI.

Prof. B.P.S.Sehgal, Dean Academic Affairs, presided over the function. Addressing the younger generation Ms. Koushal said that the Digital Technology has revolutionized the Mumbai Film Industry. The Hollywood is coming to the Bollywood. Computergraphics, Animation, Visual-effects, 20 Animation and 3D Animation etc, have made the films slick and beautiful. Three-Four years Degrees of Engineering and DoctOI'> are now a history. Tlus Industry is a billion dollar industry. A lot of career avenues are there to embrace you provided you have the aptitude and the zeal to work hard.

.' She further said that I am proud of my roots as I belong to a Kashmiri family settled in Jammu and can speak Dogri and Kashmir fluently though presently settled in Mumbai. Going dovv'O the memory lane, she remembered the days when she was a lecturer in English at Government Women College, Parade for eleven years.

"Duggar Di Jhankar" a programme of Dogri Danr,:es, was organized by the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu at Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium. The young talented artists from the various Teaching Departments of the University spell bound the audience with their superb performance. Prof. N.R.Sharma, Chairman, Campus Cultural Committee was the Chief Guest-on this occasion.

Manu Sharma from the Department of Library Science and Information in her dance presentation "Aayoon Giani Aan Sachch Bo, Mahre Banku Deya Chachua" reflected the hard life of the Dogras. The beautiful "Choma" on the wrists of a bride and praise of its designer in the dance number "Choma Kun Ghareya Meri Jaan" peformed by Jeany Roshan and Vaishali Sharma from the Department of English was well received. Vandana Sabharwal mesmerized the audience with "Koon-Koon Aayoon Chanyain Chanyain Kattni Aan Roon". Diksha Shai"ma and Sujata Singh both from the Law School performed Dogri Folk dance "Jagarna" and "Maau Jogian Dandian Te Bhainu Jogian Bangan" respectively. Anu Saini and Anu Bharti from the Department of Economics performed ., Surma Nimma Nimma". Anju Rani from the Department of Dogri presented "Chandiya De Jhumke Main Payee Laini Aan". While Rajni Bala from the Department of English performed "Kaaleya Ve Bhoura".

The Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu organized a Special programme to Felicitate Sh, G.S.Pagoch, Asstt. Registrar, University of Jammu on his being conferred with the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for his Dogri Epic" MAHATMA VIDUR" .

Prof. B.P.S.Sehgal, Dean Academic Affairs was the Chief Guest on this occasion. While Prof. N.R.Sharma, Chairman, Campus Cultural Committee was the Guest of Honour.

Mr. Pagoch was felicitated by presentation of a Shawl, Memento and a Cash Award of Rs. 25,000/- from the University. In addition, Sh. Romesh Magotra, Table Tennis Coach, Department of Physical Education was also honoured by presenting a Memento and Cash Award for coaching the University Team whic'h bagged two Bronze Medals in the Inter- University Tournaments.

Speaking on this occasion, Prof. B.P.S.Sehgal praised the qualities of head and heart of Sh. G.S.Pagoch. He described him as a man of integration who in addition to the meritorious university service has contributed a lot in the literary field and brought laurels to the Institution by being decorated with the coveted Sahitya Akademi Award.

Earlier, Dr P.S.Pathania, Dean Students Welfare, in his welcome address said that the students, faculty members and the non teaching employees are the integral parts of the University Fraternity. The endeavor of the Department of Students Welfare is to support and felicitate all such personalities who bring a good name to the University.

In addition, a number of his poems and songs have also got place in "DUAA THAN", a Dogri Publication from Mumbai.

He received Best Book Award from J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages for the book 'MATANG ASHRAM" and "MAHTAMA VIDUR" during the year 1988-89 and 2007 respectively. He was decorated with the Sahitya Akademi Award by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi for the book "MAHATMA VIDUR" on 20th of February, 2008.MATANG ASHRAM has been prescribed as a Text Book in Master Degree Programme of University of Jammu in Dogri.

CULTURAL TRIP TO THE UNIVERSITY OF KASHMIR

A contingent comprising Cultural Secretaries from various Teaching Departments of

Jammu University led by Dr. P.S Pathania, Dean Students Welfare, Jammu University,

visited the University of Kashmir under the Cultural Exchange Programme. The objective of

the Programme was to develop, a friendly, academic and cultural relationships and mutual

understanding. Dr. Pathania, exchanged his experiences and anecdotes with the

students of both the Universities. He hoped that 1)1ore such programmes shall be arranged

in future. The students from the University of Jammu, briefed their counter parts about the

Students Cultural Council, a statutory students body of the University of Jammu and how it

assists the Department of Students Welfare in organizing various youth activities at the

campus. The students from the Kashmir University took them around the campus after the

warm and enthusiastic interaction. The students visited Allama Iqbal Library, Museum and

the Convocation Complex of KU The students of the both the Universities also presented

some cultural items on.this occasion.

Prof MM Masoodi, DSW, KV, addressing the students said that, an opportunity is being

provided to the students from different backgrounds, Cultures & beliefs to assemble at a

common platform and develop a sense of appreciation for each other's Culture, Folklore,

Music and Dance etc.

Dr. P.S Pathania, Dean Students Welfare, also extended an invitation to the Students of

Kashmir University to visit the University of Jammu

The Cultural Troupe of the University of Jammu, brought laurels by winning First Prize in the Skit Competition and the Third Prize in the Creative Dance, in the Inter-UniversityNational Youth+Eestivalrorg~ize<!i'Yith~ ~~s~~t!<tl}'~9tIfl~,v~!Yf~.i~t;S, New Delhiand the Ministry of Youth Affairs Si. Sports, Govt. of India at Vldyasagar University, Medina Pur, West Bengal.

Skit Team, included Juhie Mohan, Isha Taggar, Bhasha Sumbly, Priya Raina, Neeraj Sharma, Sarang Vaid & Vikram Sharma, while Creative Dance was performed by Poonam Handa. It needs to be mentioned here the Jammu University sent only two items for

The 60th Republic Day was celebrated by University of Jammu with patriotic fervour and gaiety. Prof. Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor hoisted the National Flag and

The presence of campus children in large number added colour to the event.

The young dancers attired beautifully, spell-bound the audience with theirexcellent movements, formations and co-ordination.Poonam Handa stole the show in Solo Dance competition with her superb footwork&expressions and was adjudged First in the said event.Sachin Bhagat and Mahua Gupta were adjudged First in Tattoo Designing.The Skit performed by Isha Taggar, Juhie Mohan, Ashish Kant Sharma, Hemant Kumar,Sahil, Smriti Sharma, Mokshi Bali, Vikram Sharma and Ashish Sharma bagged theSecond Prize.
