AninnovativeandcollaborativepartnershipbetweenCHILDUKandFamilyLivesaimstoinspirepositivechangeinthehealthandwellbeingofyoungpeople,familiesandwidercommunities.Usingaholisticprogrammeofphysicalactivitiescombinedwithemotionalwell-beingprogrammeswecombinedthestrengthsandexpertisefromour2well-establishedHertfordshireOrganisations,toprovideintergenerationalsupporttominimisethesocialisationofriskybehavioursinyoungpeopletohelpthemreachtheirgoalsandpotentialaswellasdeliverlongtermbenefitstothewidercommunityHertfordshire’sInnovationFundenabledourproject-SimplyAmazingtodeliverourstructuredprogrammetovulnerablefamiliesusingnon-traditionalengagementformatsthatrespondstotherhetoricof‘sportforgood’andatoolforsocialchange’.Usingtheprinciplesoffairplay,sportsmanship,andsportactivitiesalongsideemotionalhealthandparentingstrategiesincreasesourabilitytoengagevulnerablefamiliesandtransformlivesthroughsport.

2. Howdidyourpartnershipcomeaboutanddevelop?

FamilyLivesandCHILDUKareorganisationswithaclearinterestinprovidingservicesthatimprovethehealth,wellbeingandlifechancesofyoungpeople,familiesandcommunitiesacrossHertfordshire.WeinitiallycametogetherviatheHertfordshireChildren’sFundinitiativein2004,aconsortiumofgrassrootAgenciesdeliveringservicestosupportvulnerablechildren.��

In2015,TheInnovationFundpresentedanopportunitytocombineourservicestrengthsandexpertisetodevelopanintergenerationalprogrammethatrespondstothephysicalandemotionalneedsoffamiliesinaholisticway.CHILDUKhasaneffectiveyoungpeopleengagementprogrammeprovidingphysicalandwellbeingactivitiesacrossHertfordshirethatensuresbetteroutcomesforyoungpeople.FamilyLivesprovidesemotionalsupportandpracticaladvice,andhasanationwideHelpline,onlineservices,accreditedvolunteerprogrammesandindividualandgroupworkmethods.Combined,thesedeliverymodelsarecomplementary;utilisingthepowerofsportasthehooktoengagementoffersanalternativemeansofexcitementandrisktakingforyoungpeopletothatgainedthroughriskybehaviourwhilstprovidingnon-stigmatisingroutestoengagingvulnerablefamiliesinemotionalsupport..Since2004,ourOrganisationshassharedacommon

Fromtheoutset,ourpartnershipisclearaboutthedesiredoutcomeswewanttoachieveandinhowtopromotetheparticipationofhighlystigmatisedgroupsinordertoraiseawarenessandchallengediscriminationinthewidercommunity.Usingqualitative,quantitativedata,andestablishedbaselinemeasuresincludingtakeupandservicesatisfactionratings.TOPSEandSDQpreandpostinterventionmeasurestheeffectivenessandvalueformoneyprovisionandanalysedandcomparisonsmadetodetermineimpactonyoungpeopleandparents’knowledgeandchangingattitudes.Ourprogrammehasevidencedthefollowingimpact:• Increasedparentingcapacity• Achievinghealthyfamilies• Increasedphysicalandemotionalwellbeingofparentsandyoungpeople• Achievedthrough:• Measurableimprovementsintheemotionalhealthandwell-beingofyoungpeopleviaSDQs.• Evidencedchangesinyoungpeoples’attitudestowardspeerpressureandearlysexualisation.

4. Howpartnershipworkingishelpingyoutoachievemore.

FamilyLivesandCHILDUKrecognisethatinthechangingexternalenvironmentinwhichweoperate,ourpartnershipbringsstrongdevelopmentalpotentialtobothorganisationswhilstretainingownuniqueidentitiesandinternalprocesses.WeinitiallyexploredcollaborationandjoinedforcesbecausewebelieveithasthepotentialtoimproveourengagementandcollectivewellbeingimpactwithvulnerableyoungpeopleandmarginalisedfamiliesacrossHertfordshireandwithinwidergeographicalareas,reachingmorebeneficiaries,achievingsimilaroutcomesbutusingadifferentapproach.Throughutilisingandcombiningourstrengthsinservicedelivery,andinengagingyoungpeopleandthewiderfamily,ourcombinedprogrammeisbetterabletorespondsuccessfullytointergenerationalsocialproblems,becomeresponsivetoneedsandmoreefficientincombiningadultandchildrenservicestogether,reducingduplicationandinefficiencyacrossoursector.Tothiseffect,ourcollaborationhasopenedthedoortodiscussionandpartnershipopportunitieswithBarnetFC,TottenhamFC,GroundworkandotherAgenciesandstrengthenedourabilitytoapplyfornewareasoffundingBigLottery&SportEnglandandKeyprojectsinLondon,Hertfordshire,Bedfordshire&Essex.OURAWARDS:Winner,WelwynHatfieldDragonsApprenticeMentoringSpecialRecognitionAward,2016.Byworkingtogether,weknowwearestrongertobreaktheprepertualintergeneartionalcycleofsubstancemisuse,crimeandpoorhealthissuesthatoftenprevailinthesociallydeprivedareasthatweworkin.

5. Howyouaremakingsurethatthepartnershipisworkingeffectively.

FamilyLives&CHILDUKhasacombinedstrategy,centredonoutcomesforourbeneficiaries,intowhichourcollaborativeframeworksits.Tothiseffect,andfromtheoutset,wesetoutastructureonhowFamilyLivesandCHILDUKwillworkasequalpartnerstogether,definingeachofourroles,responsibilities,strengthsandobligationsviaajointworkingagreement.Thisincludesourrespectiveworkethos,missionandvaluesandthisidentifiedasynergythatisaveryimportantpartofourpartnershipandsettheframeworkforthecontinuedongoingsuccessofourcollaboration.Asinanyrelationship,trust,opennessandhonestyarevitalelementsinasuccessfulpartnershipandthishasevolvedandstrengthenedovertime.Wehaveasharedandaspirationalvisionofwhatwecanachievetogetherandhowwecanlearnfromeachother,whichhasdefinedourcompatiblewaysofworkingflexibly.Weareconfidentinourrespectivemanagementstructurestofollowbestpractice,sharingmandatesandagendaswhereappropriatetobeabletoraiseandaddressanyconcernsorairanyviewsbothclearlyandfairlyandwithoutanydistortionordetrimenttoourworkingrelationshipandourorganisationsreputation.Thisispossiblebecausewecontinuetoinvestconsiderabletimeinourrelationshipdevelopment,meetingfrequentlybothinformallyandinformally,combiningteam-buildingactivitiesandinformalsocialisingofourteams.Wepro-activelystrivetoachievethebestoutofthepartnership,bykeepingthewelfareofourbeneficiariesattheforefrontofallthatwedotogether.

Byworkingcloselytogether,FamilyLivesandCHILDUKhasdevelopedagreaterknowledgeofworkingholisticallywithfamiliestoachievemoresustainedobjectives,enhancedthroughanintergenerationalapproach.Thishashighlightedtheimportanceofbeingabletoofferacompletelyintergenerationalpackagethatsupportsphysicalandemotionalwellbeingtoleavealastingandsustainedimpactforthecommunitiesweworkin.FamilyLiveshaslearnednewwaystoengagewithyoungpeopleandtheirfamiliesthroughsportandusedasamagnettoengagehardtoreachgroups,tocreatechangethroughCHILDUK’suniqueandinnovativemethodsofengagement,whichallowyoungpeopletoexpresstheirviewsandbecomeencouragedtoparticipate.FamilyLiveshasalsosharedthelatestmentoringtechniqueswithCHILDUKandtorecognisethatinordertoseekchangeinyoungpeopleworkingwiththewholefamilyencouragesandsustainsimprovement.Oneoftheopportunitiesofferedbythiscollaborationisbringingdiverseskillstogetherandasharedcommitmenttobuildingonthestrengthsandexperienceofeachorganisation,andrecognitionthatourstrengthsaredifferentbutcomplementary.Thishashelpedmakeahugeimpactwithaninnovativeapproachgainedfromvaluableexperienceandknowledgeshared.
