This program was brought to Ventura College
through Gibbs Truck Centers. Lab classes will
take place in a facility at the Gibbs center in
Oxnard. The Diesel Mechanics program
equips you for the job market with technical
ability plus soft skills such as job readiness,
customer service, workplace ethics,
communication, math and computing skills.
You’ll enter the job market with hands-on
experience with top of the line equipment in an
actual diesel truck repair shop located at
Gibbs Truck Center in Oxnard.

highly specialized Diesel Mechanic program.
Our program is designed to help prepare
students for immediate employment in the
medium/heavy duty vehicle workforce. The
program features lecture and lab courses
taught by experienced professors and
includes preparation for seven different
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)
certifications. Through hands-on application
with top-of-the-line trucks and engines, you’ll
learn how to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair
the components and systems in diesel trucks.

Diesel Mechanics
The Program
The Diesel Mechanics program provides
students with a practical, real-world
work-based training experience in the
diagnosis and repair of the electronics,
engines and various equipment in
medium/heavy duty trucks. To prepare
students for the advanced knowledge and
technology skills needed for the 21st Century,
our curriculum covers:
• Preventative maintenance and inspection of heavy-duty vehicles
• Diesel engine repair • Technical, operational and diagnostic skills
of diesel electrical systems • Diagnosis and repair of fuel management systems • Operation and repair of power
train units
• Inspection and adjustment of steering and suspensions systems
• Service and repair of brake systems
• Service and repair of hydraulic systems • Service and repair of heating/air conditioning systems
Students may elect to pursue a Certificate of
Achievement and/or an Associate of Science
Degree in Diesel Mechanics1.

Achievement or Associate Degree program1
you're choosing to immerse yourself in an
in-demand field where your expertise will pay
off. Between Ventura, Santa Barbara, San
Luis Obispo, Los Angeles and Kern counties,
there's expected to be a 7.5 percent increase
in the job market between now and 2022.
Over 7,000 bus and truck mechanics and
diesel engine specialists are employed
annually in the five counties. Median salary for
the market averages over $25 an hour.
As of 2015, most individuals in the field had
only a high school degree or some college,
without a degree. By enrolling in our program
you're setting yourself apart from the crowd
and positioning yourself as a highly-skilled and
highly-employable job applicant.
