CLIENTThe customer is a family-owned, successful conglomeration of multiple businesses that operate in multiple o�ces throughout the United States. Their scope of business ranges from marketing and distribution of equipment to contract design services for new facilities. With the help of ReTrans Freight, they have been able to reduce their freight spend by more than 20%, introduced a new sales channel through ecom-merce, improved customer satisfaction with better carrier performance and devel-oped custom technology solutions to optimize carrier routings.

SITUATION

They were very concerned about the lack of control and transparency with their current 3PL. The customer was utilizing a broker billing 3PL, which did not allow management to view freight charges and all relevant shipment information directly. Additionally, their ERP system was estimating freight charges based on a rudimentary system that only provided outbound charges. The system did not provide freight data on inbound and drop shipments, which represented a significant portion of their freight. When shipping to end consumers, damage free freight is important. arrives damaged, they can lose the sale and/or any chance of repeat business down the line. When freight arrives later than it should, they can miss installation deadlines and their customers can face steep penalties with their contracted employers. It was around the time the recession hit the US economy that the customer focused on cutting costs and decided it was time to explore other options for freight providers to ensure they were getting the best deals and rates possible. The sales process began when the Supply Chain Manager was attending an industry conference that ReTrans Freight was a member of and was also attending. The Supply Chain Manager was introduced to our VP of Sales and the two struck up a conversation. After hearing that there was no obligation nor any contractual agreements to enter into, the Supply Chain Manager decided to let ReTrans Freight review some freight data to determine if they could help him lower costs and/or create any e�ciencies in their operations. After the initial analysis, it was determined that there was room for a substantial reduction in freight rates, as well as the opportunity to implement several custom technology solutions to improve customer service and shipping integrity.

The benchmark analysis revealed a cost savings opportunity of over 20% with best in class quality carriers. More importantly to the customer, however, was the fact that ReTrans Freight’s program gave them full transparency of shipping and carrier infor-mation. Through ReTrans Freight, they have complete visibility on all carrier rates and freight charges. ReTrans carrier rates and charges were outlined up front, in detail, and the customer is provided full access to the actual carrier freight bills. Full transpar-ency was an important factor in choosing a partner.

The ReTrans team immediately began working to help the customer gain control of costs. Their ERP system was EDI capable, which allowed ReTrans to seamlessly integrate not only outbound freight information but also inbound and drop shipment data as well. ReTrans Freight integrated real-time freight rates into their ERP system, which meant the customer could not only include freight charges on customer sales bids, they could also provide real-time freight data for virtually every shipment. ReTrans took it a step further and integrated freight rates into their website and ecommerce platform, which gave them the ability to display freight rates for online orders to customers at checkout. This custom solution opened up a new sales channel resulting in new business and increased sales revenue.

The customer continues to work direct with our partner carriers locally. They maintain total control over their operations and have support from our carriers on the national level as well. With more eyes and ears on their business, as a result of the top 5 account status that ReTrans Freight maintains with our carriers, the customer has been able to reduce damage rates and increase on time delivery percentages, which has led to higher customer satisfaction levels.

Recognized as a leader in their line of business, the customer continues to grow organically and through acquisitions. They have purchased several other companies in their industry over the past few years and have been able to achieve immediate cost savings as a result of implementing the ReTrans Freight program into each one. Visibility of costs and transparency of shipment information is maintained and freight data for the entire corporation is centralized and available for management review 24x7.
