Renew My Church Diocese Feedback Meeting

The writers for the Rogers Park-Edgewater group-ing team for Renew My Church on Monday pre-sented to the Renew My Church Executive Com-mittee, in preparation for the committee to give a recommendation to Cardinal Cupich about the future shape of the Church in our area.

The lay writers for the grouping team, Denise Goodman from St. Gertrude, Salvador Perez from St. Jerome and Liam Ford made the presentation on Zoom, with pastoral leaders Deacon Chris Murphy of St. Ignatius, Fr. Richard Prendergast of St. Gertrude and Fr. Noel Reyes of St. Jerome, as well as Fr Dan Hartnett and Fr James Prehn of Loyola University, also available to answer ques-tions.

About half of the presentation was taken up with discussing the various parish reconfiguration sce-narios presented to the parish in early Septem-ber. The task of the grouping team, made up of five laypeople from each of the three parishes, the pastors, and Fr. Jim, was to feedback on the six scenarios provided to us by the archdiocese and four of those proposed by the parishes. We did so in the form of a letter to the archdiocese and the presentation Monday night. (The feed-back summary document can be found on the St. Ignatius parish website.)

As you may remember from the St. Ignatius grouping team’s presentation and the information distributed on our website and at church, all but one of the scenarios proposed closes St. Ignatius as a parish. But this does not mean that our church necessarily will close as a place for wor-ship. All but three of the scenarios leave open the possibility of the St. Ignatius campus housing a mission center in cooperation with the other churches’ congregations and Loyola University. The letter and the presentation asked for time—specifically, 18 months—to work with Loyola and the other parishes to figure out a way to make the mission center a reality.

The grouping team’s letter to the archdiocese and the presentation Monday evening gave prefer-ence to three scenarios that would involve St. Ig-natius merging with one of the other parishes. In two of these, the church could remain open under the mission center model while merging with one of the other parishes; the third would close St.

Ignatius under church law. We pointed out the third scenario wouldn’t give us a chance to get a start on the mission center. A fourth scenario, un-der which all churches would remain open for regular worship but St. Ignatius would merge with St. Jerome’s, also was judged viable by the grouping team.

The writing team told the committee that the most “aspirational and visionary” scenario would merge all three parishes and base the new parish at St. Ignatius, possibly relocating Northside Cath-olic Academy’s lower elementary school to St. Ig-natius. The other scenarios, in which either St. Je-rome would close or St. Gertrude would close, were judged the least viable scenarios by the grouping team.

The writing team also discussed several overarch-ing considerations that were not covered in their discussion of the various scenarios. These were:

• The place of Northside Catholic Academy in our Catholic community; • The possibility of the Mission Center; • Inclusion in the Catholic Church and the grouping; • Neighborhood changes that may alter the face of our parishes; • And projections made by the archdiocese about what would happen to parishioners joining a new parish after a merger.

We explained that one idea for creating the mis-sion center included Loyola University purchasing at least part of the St. Ignatius school property and erecting a building for both student housing and the mission center. But that’s only one mod-el, which has been sidelined by the pandemic. In-cluded in the document is this statement regard-ing the St. Ignatius community’s commitment to the idea of a Mission Center:

“The parishioners and leaders of St. Ignatius feel that purchase and development of the school buildings by Loyola would have been a financially sound way to move ahead with a mission center. However, they also feel that, despite the financial position Loyola is in, the mission center idea still holds promise. If the Rogers Park-Edgewater par-ishes are able to move forward with beginning partnership with Loyola’s interested departments and interested outside donors in funding some concrete examples of spiritual formation and so-

After the presentation, the committee asked questions about the vision for the mission center, and one about the feeling among St. Ignatius pa-rishioners about the possibility of merging or closing the parish. They also asked whether there was any preference for renaming any merged parishes—we said yes, although that would re-tain the names of the churches themselves.

We were told by the cardinal’s representative for Renew My Church that a decision on the new configuration of our parishes would likely come the week of Dec. 14, possibly on Friday, Dec. 18. An online meeting will be held the evening of the day of the an-nouncement to inform members of the parishes of the cardinal’s decision.

As we wait for the decision from the cardinal be mindful of this time of Advent as one of wait-ing. Last Sunday’s Gospel called us to be alert. We need to re-member that Christ noted he would be with us always. Let us pray to be alert to the movement of the Holy Spirit as we prepare for the new reality of being church. Change is coming, oh come, oh come Emmanuel.

This year’s To-Go Thanksgiving was a great success. We were able to provide for 95 neighbors who had made reservations with us. Instead of meet-ing in the Holy Name Room, the event was moved to the first floor of the school building. Our guests were met with smiling volunteers who confirmed their reservations while others packed individual din-ners and desserts for each household. We were una-ble to offer pumpkin pie this year but everyone had chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies. Each dinner was accompanied by a card made by an NCA student expressing good cheer. This year we used a new ca-terer, The Bagel on Broadway from the reaction of our guests we made a good choice. We are grateful to The Bagel for their willingness to work with us during the pandemic. They did a great job. We are also grateful to you our parishioners for your contin-ued spiritual and financial support to our mis-sion. We could not do what we do without it.

Igna an Services Servicios Ignacianos La Cena de Acción de Gracias para llevar fue un gran éxito. Pudimos proveer para 95 vecinos que hicieron reservaciones. En lugar de juntarnos en el Salón del Sagrado Nombre, el evento fue en el pri-mer piso del edificio de la escuela. Nuestros invita-dos fueron recibidos por nuestros sonrientes volunta-rios que confirmaron sus reservaciones mientras otros empaquetaban la comida y postre para cada hogar. No pudimos proveer pastel de zapallo pero todos recibieron galletitas de avena y de chocolate. Cada cena estuvo acompañada por una tarjeta hecha por estudiantes de NCA deseándoles felicidad. Este año utilizamos un nuevo servicio de comida, The Bagel en Broadway y por la reacción de nuestros clientes, fue una buena elección. Estamos agradeci-dos por The Bagel por su esfuerzo de trabajar con nosotros durante la pandemia. Hicieron un trabajo excelente.
