Fr. Joe’s Journal El Diario del Padre Joe Happy New Year! We welcome 2017 today with the celebration of the New Year. This is the 100th New Year we have celebrated in this church. and 110 years as a parish. We look back at the past year and we look ahead to a new year. We have celebrated the sacraments: mass, confessions, baptisms, weddings, confirmation, and the sacrament of the sick. We have shared the sadness of our parishioners at funerals and their joy at baptisms and weddings. This past year we have served those in need, physically through Ig-natian Services and spiritually through our ministry to those ill at home and at nursing homes. We of-fered Catholic education through our school, NCA, and through our Religious education program. The liturgy committee and finance committee have done great work and our parish council has begun to ad-dress some of the challenges of the parish. Our staff has continued their great service to the parish. We have also offered prayer groups, faith enrichment and continued service to our Hispanic community. Our deacons (Mora, Rossow and Soto) and their wives have enhanced our ministry to the parish. We give thanks for the return to health of Deacon Soto. We have welcomed Fr. Augustine from the semi-nary for our Sunday masses and thank all the semi-nary professors for their help. Fr. Flaherty (who served here before) and Fr. Gomez give us great as-sistance especially with the Spanish masses. Fr. Wolff assists with daily mass. Fr. Torres, from our sharing parish, has also assisted us. In particular we welcome our former pastor, Fr. Foley, back for weekend assistance. The year ahead presents many challenges. We share these challenges with every other parish. We need to reach out for new member and train more people to assist in all aspects of min-istry. We need all of our parishioners to support the parish to the best of their ability financially. As a di-verse parish we need to be aware of all the work that is done by the different groups in the parish. Finally I give thanks for all who help and support the parish with their time, talent and treasure. May our parish thrive for another 100 years. We welcome Bishop Manz for the Virgin de la Nube Celebration. We welcome all our Ecuadorian brothers and sisters for this great feast. Last weekend we celebrated Christmas. I thank all who helped make the day so beautiful. Early deadline: I write this article early . We welcome Fr. Carcar back for a stay. See this bulletin for other key articles and event announcements.

God bless you, your pastor, Fr. Joe

New Year Resolutions Happy New Year!

Are you thinking of making New Year resolu-tions? Why not consider giving of yourself? There are various ministries in the parish that would bene-fit with your help.

Ministers of Care take communion to area nursing homes and to our homebound parishioner. A few hours a week can make a world of difference in the life of someone confined to home. You could be that agent for change.

Ministers of Consolation work with grieving fami-lies providing assistance in planning the funeral of a loved one. Ministers keep in contact with the family after the funeral to offer prayers and support. You should have a flexible schedule for this ministry.

Food Panty Volunteers need to have patience and a good sense of humor. You can choose to either help clients shop or interview clients to determine their needs. We also need help unloading our food deliver-ies. This requires a strong back, the ability to lift 40 pounds is needed. We ask volunteers to commit to at least 6 months.

If any of these opportunities appeal to you, please contact Kathy Morris at [email protected] for more information.

Remember we are all Ignatian Services.

Tambien necesitamos ayuda descargan-do la comida.

NCA Application Deadline Approaching NCA’s admissions season for the 2017-18 school year is off to a great start! We kicked off the season with Admissions Open Houses in October and early December, and we’re receiving applications daily. Applica-tions are available online at www.northsidecatholic.org. Our 2017-18 enrollment process will begin January 30 when we open registration for our current students and their siblings for two weeks. If you are a current NCA family and have a sibling who will be starting NCA next year (typically in preschool or kindergarten), please note that an application should be completed for that student by the end of December. We will start our acceptance process for new NCA families on February 13. NCA is committed to providing a quality, Cath-olic education to our parish families and the communities we serve. We offer financial aid through our Guardi-an Angel Scholarship Fund to ensure that money is never a reason why a family doesn’t come to NCA. If you have any questions about the admissions process, enrollment, or financial aid, or want to schedule a tour please contact Melissa Soberanes at [email protected] or 773-743-6277. Save the Date for Catholic Schools Week January 29-February 4 NCA will kick off the week-long Catholic Schools Week celebration on Sunday, January 29, with NCA Masses at each of our parishes and Open Houses at both campuses. Please save the date and join us on January 29, from 10am-12pm at our Primary School Campus (6216 N. Glenwood Ave.), and from 11am-1pm at our new Middle School Campus (7318 N. Oakley Ave.). Watch for more details and information on events in January.

Have you made any New Year’s Resolutions? Specifically, have you made any resolutions about improving your spiritual life? Have you decided to grow in your prayer life? We have a Faith Sharing Group that meets on Tuesday at 7 pm. Or maybe you can start your own group at another time.

Praying the Rosary? The Legion of Mary meets every Saturday after the 8 am Mass to pray the rosary and share their faith.

You would rather pray in silence? Join us eve-ry First Friday of each month for Eucharistic Adoration.

Join the choir! Singing is praying twice. Con-tact Brian DuSell at [email protected].

Develop and grow your relationship with God? Participate in a ministry! The Parish is welcoming new Eucharistic ministers and Lec-tors. Contact Christine Timcheck at volunteer @stignatiuschurch.org. You can read more about other ministries in the Ignatian Services column.

Participate in the daily Mass. An excellent way to grow closer to God is hear his Word and join in communion on a daily basis. Our daily Mass is at 8 am.

Read more books about spirituality? Our par-ish library has a great variety of topics that would help you to grow and deepen your faith and prayer life. The parish library is open any time our parish office is open.

Contacte Brian DuSell a [email protected].

Take care of your spiritual life, your rela-

tionship with God, because this is the back-

bone of all that we do and all that we are.

Pope Francis
