From the Pastor’s Desk! August 21, 2016

Tomorrow, Monday, August 22nd we welcome back the faculty, staff and students

of St. Mary School. Where did those weeks of summer go? 2016 celebrates the

90th year of our school’s opening and we are filled with great excitement and

anticipation for an incredible year as we welcome 377 students - 56 Preschool

Students and 321 Kindergarten thru 8th Grade Students. (These numbers were as

of July 30th and will fluctuate as the year begins. As a reference point, last year at

this time we were at 374 registered students.)

In addition to new students and their families, we welcome 4 new teachers and staff members to our

St. Mary School and Parish Community as well.

Miss Margaret Jacobson is our new kindergarten teacher;

Miss Ashley Grengs is our new first grade teacher;

Miss Lisa Bianchi is our new 4th and 5th grade math teacher with a 4th grade homeroom and,

Mr. Thomas Buczek is our new physical education teacher.

The academic excellence for which St. Mary School is known continues to be a special part of

our parish community and our surrounding communities at large. Manifesting a strong base of

traditions and moral values of our Catholic faith, the mission of education is alive and thriving at

St. Mary school!

And speaking of thriving … Due to an unprecedented demand for our preschool program last

year, the need for additional classroom space was identified. Through the hard work, support and

dedication of our School Advisory Board, Pastoral Council, Finance Council, school and parish

staffs, the reorganization of existing space has been completed! This year we are thrilled to have

separate classrooms for each of our preschool programs – one classroom for the 3 year old program

and one classroom for the 4 year old program. This additional classroom space was achieved by

moving the school offices, moving the art room and the library and combining the School Music

Room with the Church Choir room. The preschool is now located where the school offices and

art room used to be. The Art Room was moved to the former library and the library to the former

music room. The school office was moved to the former preschool room. There was a lot of

moving going on this summer!! Special tours of the new preschool rooms and school offices will

be given by our 8th grade students on Sunday, September 11th after the 8:30, 10:00 and 11:30 a.m.

Masses. Please join us in the Oak Room for cake and coffee as we celebrate 90 wonderful years of

our parish’s beginnings and continued promise and growth!

Fr. Tom

OUR PART

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – AUGUST 28TH

Next week ‘our part’ of the readings, everyone’s part, is to sing this Response:

“GOD, IN YOUR GOODNESS, YOU HAVE MADE A HOME FOR THE POOR.”

The readings are Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28-29; Psalm 68:4-7, 10-11; Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24; Luke 14:1, 7-14. Reading

this scripture before we attend Mass next Sunday will enable us to be more fully prepared to listen to God’s Word and

faithfully to sing our part, “GOD, IN YOUR GOODNESS, YOU HAVE MADE A HOME FOR THE POOR.”

A MEDITATION

God, in Your goodness, You have made a home.

But my Lord, who should live there – the famous,

The rich, the fair, the blessed of chromosome?

Who could deserve a place so marvelous?

“This is a home for the poor,” He replied.

“But there is plenty room for the humble.

Both kinds will do, but one has to decide

To seek Me or sit outside and grumble.”

Then He said, “You can’t pay your way in here;

Your fame, good looks, your job, or ancestry,

Mean nothing to Me, those things disappear;

They came and went, tested you, informed Me.

Your home is not here in this holy space,

Too many poor and humble in this place.”

Deacon Bob

“You don’t choose your family.

They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.”

— Desmond Tutu

St. Mary is made up of many different households that are joined together as one parish family. All

of us are a gift to one another from God. Since January we have welcomed 33 new households to our

parish family and 22 babies have been baptized in our Church! How wonderful that our parish family

is growing - but do you know who these new family members are? Have we properly welcomed and

incorporated them into our parish community?

Imagine that you are a brand new parishioner to St. Mary. What would make you feel welcome in our

Church? In our RE program? In our School? In our parish community? Would you choose to come

to our events if you didn’t know anyone and no one had reached out to welcome you since you made

the conscious decision to join our parish?

If these questions speak to you OR you are one of our new parishioners and have some great ideas how

to make the next new members of our parish feel more welcome, please join the Welcoming Committee

that is being re-introduced at St. Mary. Contact Jane Birmingham at [email protected]

or call 708-447-1020 x109.

Building for the Future is not only about the physical structures on our campus; it is also about building

the bridges throughout our community to ensure that our parish is a place where we welcome, teach and

send forth disciples to do God’s work in the world!

RITE OF CHRISTIAN

INITIATION FOR ADULTS

St. Mary Parish is once again ready to

welcome those adults who are curious or eager to embrace

the Catholic Faith. If you are a Catholic and have not

received the Sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation or

if you know of anyone who is interested in exploring the

possibility of deepening their relationship with Jesus and

His Church, please contact the rectory. We will begin

meeting sometime after Labor Day. Letters of invitation

will then be sent to all interested parties.

As disciples of Christ each of us is called from our baptism

to be an evangelist in whatever way possible. Our RCIA

program is one of the special ways our parish meets the

needs of those who have a desire to embrace our faith and

for those who wish to enter into a new and closer relation-

ship with Christ. Thank you for sharing God’s love and

the joy of Faith in the world. Deacon Randy Belice

Rosaries Needed for Hospital Patients

During times of illness one often returns to one's faith in many different ways. The most sought religious item in MacNeal hospital are rosaries. Many patients ask for a rosary so that during their hospital stay they can pray the rosary. If they have forgotten how to pray the rosary we give them a Rosary prayer guide with a rosary. If you have any extra rosaries that you do not use at home or would like to donate some rosaries to the patients at MacNeal, please drop them off at the rectory offices. We will most gladly share these Rosaries with the Catholic patients that ask for a Rosary. In the meantime I ask for your continued prayers for the sick at our local hospitals and all those that care for the sick. Matthew Brophy Pastoral Care MacNeal Hospital

ST. BARBARA ROSARY - TUESDAY NIGHT

I have begun a Rosary group in English at St. Barbara in Brookfield on Tuesday nights at 6:30 p.m. I started it especially for people that work during the day and do not have the opportunity to pray the Rosary in a group setting. It would be good to see more people pray the Rosary. I have a printed sheet of all the prayers in case there is anyone that is new to praying the Rosary, so they do not feel lost. It is handed out to everyone so no one is embarrassed by asking for one. I want everyone to feel welcome!
