RCIA or Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a

spiritual journey into the Catholic faith. It is an exploration of Catholic teachings, traditions, and

practices. Participants attend weekly sessions which begin in September. It is a process whereby adults become fully participating members of the Church

through a series of rites, which concludes after the Easter Vigil service in the spring. RCIA is for those who:

1.) have not been baptized; 2.) have been baptized in another faith and now wish to join the Catholic church; or 3.) have been baptized in the Catholic faith but have not received the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Desde el Concilio Vaticano II la Iglesia, como Pueblo de Dios, ha tomado la imagen de una peregrinación para definir su presencia en este mundo. Para los hispanos la peregrinación más antigua es la de Santiago de Compostela en España cuya fiesta celebramos esta semana. Según la tradición, Santiago Apóstol evangelizó España y después de su muerte su cadáver fue llevado a Galicia por acontecimientos milagrosos. En el siglo VII señales de estrellas llevaron al descubrimiento del lugar de su entierro y se construyó un santuario con el nombre de Campo de Estrellas. Eventualmente, a fina-les del primer milenio cristiano, empezaron las famosas peregrinaciones a Santiago. Después de muchos siglos la mejor manera de llegar a Santiago todavía es a pie. Recorrer el camino de Santiago es caminar sobre las huellas de innumerables peregrinos que durante más de mil años han ido trazando el sendero. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week’s Treasure mentioned the “Nuns of the Battlefield,” religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the “Nuns of the Battlefield” stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: “They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty.” —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S.
