HIS BACKGROUND:

Pedro was born in 1519.

He was one of 20 brothers and sisters.

Pedro ran away from home when he was 14.

He started making a living as a seamen and

stopped at age 30.

HIS BACKGROUND:He joined the military and worked his way up the ranks.

He was arrested in 1563 for unknown charges and was released after he rout a letter to the king explaining his

innocence.

After that he went on the voyage we know him for.

He died in 1574 due to war.This is Pedro’s ship.

His Goals:

Pedro wanted to find gold and other

riches.

He wanted to establish a colony in the new world.

He also wanted to drive out the French

Pedro’s goals were protect the land from other countries, and explore and claim land. Pedro also wanted to establish a

base to attack the French. His sponsor was Spain.

Pedro’s Journey:

Spain was upset that the French was expanding and growing and building new colonies. Pedro Menendez De Aviles was sent at once to Florida so he could attack

the French.

St.Augustine:

When Pedro got close to Fort Caroline’s har or he soon discovered that the French ships were blocking

the mouth of the river where the harbor was. Pedro sailed away to

another small harbor just south of Fort Caroline. There he set up a camp

called St. Augustine. With the help of the Timucuan Indians and his men, the camp became a fort. Then he claimed

all of the land for Spain.

The discovery of ST.Augustine:

He planed to go to St. Johns River to Fort Caroline,a French settlement. But he soon

discovered that French ships bloked the river
