Introduction

To the New Rector of Christ the King

You are, foremost, God’s answer to many months of prayer by the people of Christ the King. Your arrival is anticipated with great joy. You, my fellow clergy, will be the envy of the Diocese.

Such glowing hyperbole demands explanation. I have been most fortunate to have served this parish twice over the last decade, first as Rector and now as their transitional priest.

When I joined the Christ the King congregation a little over eleven years ago, I had only a hint of the depth and breadth of the faith community that existed here in this parish. The entire venture upon which they embarked only a short time before I was called as their rector, was itself a powerful manifestation of faith. The Vestry had voted to step out and hire a full-time clergyperson, trusting that God would provide the wherewithal to accomplish that goal.

The fact that you are studying this parish profile and seriously considering whether or not you are the answer to this parish’s prayers tells you that their vision has evolved into reality. I, for one, am not surprised by these events. Christ the King had been preparing itself for transition for many years, perhaps without realizing it. Returning now some eight years later, it is clear that step taken in faith in the Lord proved well grounded.

For some 20 years prior to that move, this parish prevailed, grew, and provided a spiritual home for many, many families with full and part-time clergy and, on occasion, with shorter term supply priests. Without question, these clergy persons provided leadership, but the carving out of a lively, generous, caring and pretty much self-sufficient parish rested with this spirit-grounded congregation.

In that time-frame, the congregation first built a multi-purpose worship and fellowship building and later planned, built, and dedicated a parish hall / education building. Many active lay ministries critical to the ongoing life of the parish have grown and built traditions which give Christ the King its distinctive character and personality: bread bakers, vintners, a devoted altar guild, arborists, building and grounds maintenance, musicians, to mention a few that give the parish its own impetus that carry it well beyond its apparent size.

To be a pastor here is to be in a place that is not so large that you won’t know everyone’s name, or so small that one can’t muster a critical mass of folks for virtually any project, cause, or event. Christ the King is the home of a stable, welcoming, loving, and modestly growing community of devoted believers in Jesus Christ. I have frequently said that to be a member of the parish frees you from fear of want—spiritually, materially and, most certainly, in fellowship.

The most wonderful part is that Christ the King is pivotally located in a growing community, and is poised to expand and serve as a dynamic center from which the Great Commandment can become a way of life. Christ the King needs only to be led to that belief.

I must say I envy you, my colleague—but it is with great joy and anticipation for these wonderful people that I commend to your hands this very special place.

Godspeed,

The Rev. Richard W. Budd

Rector Transitional of Christ the King

Who We Are Today

Christ the King is a Eucharistic-centered Episcopal parish, sharing in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ through worship, teaching, fellowship and outreach. The members share the belief that God has a definite purpose for the existence of this church in this particular location, as expressed in our mission statement:

We are a modern Episcopal church, living, teaching, and worshipping under the guidance of Holy Scripture, the Book of Common Prayer, and the Diocese of Southern Virginia.

We are a community of families in all stages of life: singles, families with children, empty nesters, and seniors. Our parish offers ministry opportunities for all. The congregation enjoys the intimacy of our parish family because it provides ample opportunity for everyone to be involved in the full life of our church. Our proximity to military bases also affords us the membership of both active and retired military.

With Christ as our leader, we, the members of Christ the King Episcopal Church, seek to serve Him by proclaiming His word. We

practice our faith through family worship, teaching, and through active local and international service ministry.

Our services blend both traditional and contemporary music and offer sound bible teaching. We welcome new approaches to stewardship, education, outreach and ministry. Our multi-generational, family-oriented community of believers is dedicated to finding a meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ.

The Modern History of Christ the King Episcopal Church

The Charles Parish Mission began as a diocesan mission of the Diocese of Southern Virginia during the Episcopate of the Rt. Rev. C. Charles Vache and under the care of the Ven. George Estes, Archdeacon. The first service was held on Advent I, December 1, 1985. Services and Christian education took place in vacant storefronts in the neighboring town of Poquoson. On Sunday, January 5, 1986, the members of the congregation selected Christ the King as the name of the mission. The following month Christ the King was accepted as an organized mission by the Annual Council of the Diocese of Southern Virginia.

Christ the King Episcopal Church

The Diocese of Southern Virginia called the Rev. Steven R. Rottgers to serve as the first Vicar of Christ the King. He served as full time priest from 1985 to 1993. In 1987 ground was broken for a permanent home for Christ the King on Diocesan-provided property. The first service in the new church was held in February 1988.

The Rev. Isabel F. Steilberg became the second Vicar of Christ the King in 1994 and served in a time-certain position until 1996.

The Rev. Dr. Ronald W. Spangenberg arrived in 1997 and guided the mission through its acceptance as a parish by the Annual Council of the Diocese of Southern Virginia. During Father Ron’s tenure as part-time Rector, Christ the King introduced Wednesday Healing Services, replaced folding chairs with oak pews, and conducted a building campaign that resulted in the construction of the parish hall / education building. Shaw Hall was consecrated in 2002. Upon Father Ron’s retirement in 2005, the congregation began the search for a Transitional Rector.

The Rev. Dr. Richard W. Budd accepted the call to be full-time Transitional Rector of Christ the King in 2006, and served in that position until 2010, ably guiding the parish as we sought a new spiritual leader. The altar area was remodeled during this period, and featured a parish-made, wall-mounted cross and an altar rail with kneelers for Holy Communion.

The Rev. Dr. Jack Lynch was the next called to serve as our full-time Rector. Father Jack’s 2010-2016 tenure was marked by a vigorous ministry, particularly in the areas of outreach and evangelism. Our bilingual Rector offered occasional Spanish language services for several years to better serve a significant number of Spanish-speaking congregants. In 2014 Christ the King partnered with International Cooperating Ministries to sponsor the founding and construction of the new Khuoi Luong Church located in the northern mountains of Viet Nam. There were also major improvements and updates to the physical structures of Christ the King at this time, including a new roof for the church and a face-lift for both the church and the parish hall, featuring new carpet, upholstery, and painting. In addition, one of the rooms in the parish hall was converted to a nursery.

On the departure of Father Jack in 2016, the Rev. Dr. Richard W. Budd returned and, once again, assumed the role of Transitional Rector, where he continues to serve at the present time.

The Colonial History of Christ the King Episcopal Church

Christ the King is located in the former Charles Parish, one of the original shires formed in 1634. Located on the York River southeast of the Jamestown settlement, Charles Parish became part of York County by mandate of Charles I of England in March 1642. The first church was established that year. The name was changed several times, and the final Charles Church closed in 1789. Today the register of Charles Parish, York County, Virginia, is the oldest volume of records of the Christian church in colonial Virginia.

How We Are Organized

Vestry

Our Rector leads Christ the King’s nine-member Vestry. Members are elected by the parish and serve staggered three-year terms. The Senior Warden heads the Vestry while the Junior Warden and other members oversee key aspects of Christ the King’s affairs including: maintaining grounds and facilities, Christian formation, worship, finance and stewardship, fellowship, outreach, communication and evangelism, and membership and pastoral care. The Vestry is served by a Treasurer and a Register.

Parish Staff

In addition to the priest, Christ the King has two paid positions that carry out the administrative duties of the church: parish secretary and bookkeeper. Information on their salaries is contained in the Financial section of the Profile.

Diocese of Southern Virginia

The Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia was carved out from the Diocese of Virginia in 1892 and currently includes 107 churches. Located in the southeast area of Virginia, it spans 300 miles from the Atlantic coast west to the city of Danville and north from the North Carolina state line to the city limits of Richmond.

Our current bishop, the Rt. Rev. Herman Hollerith IV was elected on September 27, 2008 and consecrated on February 10, 2009. He is the tenth Bishop of the Diocese of Southern Virginia.

The diocesan office is located in central Newport News, four miles from Christ the King. The office serves the clergy and parishes throughout the Diocese. Camp Chanco, the diocesan camp and retreat center is located in Surry, Virginia, 48 miles from Christ the King. It serves as a retreat and conference center as well as a residential summer camp for children 8-17 years of age.

How We Worship

Services Oh come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker. Psalm 95:6

Christ the King offers two regularly scheduled services on Sunday mornings: Holy Eucharist at 8:00am and 10:30am. Total attendance averages about 100 worshippers. The early Sunday service is conducted without music for simplicity and quiet dignity. Our 10:30am Sunday service is our most widely attended service of the day. A healing service with Holy Eucharist is offered on Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm. The majority of the liturgy is Rite II in the Book of Common Prayer with Rite I used during seasons of penitence.

Worship services are also held on Special Days of the liturgical year. These include Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, the Great Vigil of Easter, Ascension Day, All Saints Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. Attendance for Special Days of the liturgical year is as many as 133 parishioners.

MusicMake a joyful noise to the Lord all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness, come into his presence with singing. Psalm 100: 1-2

Christ the King has dedicated volunteer musicians and joyful participation by the congregation. Music accompanies our 10:30am Sunday service, alternating weekly between traditional hymns with piano accompaniment and more contemporary Christian music accompanied by an ensemble of guitars and drums.

Worship MinistriesAs each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace. 1 Peter 4:10

Active involvement in worship ministries is very important to the members of Christ the King, and there are many opportunities including:

Acolytes assist in worship by performing such functions as carrying the processional cross, lighting and extinguishing candles, assisting with the Eucharist, and holding the Gospel book during readings.

Altar Guild members assist the clergy in preparation for worship. Members of the Altar Guild are responsible for the care of the altar, church linens, and traditional decorations for special services.

Bread Bakers and Vintners are dedicated church members who make homemade bread and wine for use during the Holy Eucharist.

11

Lay Readers read the lessons from the Bible during the Liturgy of the Word. They lead the congregation in the Prayers of the People where we offer to God our intercessions and thanksgivings.

Chalicers assist the clergy by administering the cup of wine at Holy Communion.

Floral Decorations for the Altar are provided using funds donated by church members.

Ushers welcome members and guests to the church, hand out bulletins, provide direction and assistance when needed, collect the offering at the Offertory, and direct worshippers to and from the altar rail during Communion.

Lay Eucharistic Visitors take communion bread and wine to those who cannot attend services.

Our Vision for the FutureWe have faith that the Holy Spirit will reveal to us the person called to be the next Rector at Christ the King. We look for a faithful, energetic and committed priest, dedicated to the love and service of Christ who will journey with us as we work to be the body of Christ in the world.

Our recent parish survey and thoughtful small group discussions all confirm strong interest in a priest with the following qualities, skills and abilities:

A capable and inspiring preacher who will proclaim God’s message in an articulate and challenging way, touching us with the power of God’s Word.

A caring and loving pastor/counselor who will minister to both our compassionate and caring parish family and to those beyond our walls. We pray our new rector will empower us to continue to love our neighbors as ourselves.

A wise and thoughtful teacher who will work collaboratively with the lay leaders in our Christian Formation programs to affect a ministry that meets the needs of all parish members.

An effective and visionary administrator who will be a strong and empathetic leader, able to help us resolve differences and move forward in unified mission, assist us in expanding our human and financial resources, and inspire and lead us in carrying out Christ’s work in our corner of His Kingdom.

What We Seek in a RectorFollowing intensive interactions among the members, our prayers and Parish group discussions have helped us discern the kind of Rector we need and want.

We want our new pastor to become an integral member of our church family and to experience the mutual love and respect that we have for one another. We want to share that love through our worship services, our fellowship activities and our community outreach activities.

We seek a pastor to guide us in our Christian formation through scripture-based sermons, special study during Advent and Lent, weekly Bible study groups and in confirmation classes. We seek a pastor to assist in the Christian education for our children.

We value our traditional, liturgically-based, Episcopal identity. Our feeling of community with one another is very important. We seek to grow our membership and engage in activities that will increase the nurturing, supportive spirit we have for one another.

In summary, we seek a full-time Rector who is traditional, theologically-based, fiscally responsible and focused on the needs of our loving parish family.

Our Property and FacilitiesIn 1965 Mr. N. Waldo Harrison identified, and the Diocese purchased, 10 acres of land ideal for a future Mission Church in the growing lower York County known as Tabb. Today that land in southern York County is the home of Christ the King.

About five acres of cleared property contain our church building (Harrison Hall), a parish hall and education building (Shaw Hall), and three outbuildings that house equipment for Boy Scout Troop 94 and Christ the King grounds maintenance. The grounds have a wooded buffer and the buildings sit back from Big Bethel Road. The outdoor grounds include sitting areas, a playground, picnic areas with tables, a fire pit with benches, and a meditation area in the woods with benches and a wooden cross. There are two large fields used for outdoor events or overflow parking. The property offers room for growth and the opportunity to expand our physical presence in the community. See satellite and panoramic views of the property at https://goo.gl/maps/Pn3zhT9z7Vw and https://goo.gl/maps/7HgwPvfWC372 .

Christ the King Church

Christ the King’s present church structure was built in 1987 and accommodates approximately 120 people. A red carpet down the center aisle leads to the altar which is surrounded by a walnut and iron railing and kneeling cushions. There are two rooms on both sides: the Rector’s office, the Parish office, a music storage room, and a nursery equipped with a restroom and changing table. Behind the altar there is a fully equipped storage room and sacristy that is used by the Altar Guild. Two restrooms are located in the entry foyer.

17

Both the Parish Office and Rector’s Office are equipped with desks, filing cabinets, landline phone, and internet connected computers. The Rector’s office has adequate space for use as a counseling study and has a closeted area for the rector’s vestments. The Parish office has a work area for the parish secretary, a copier, and mail boxes for the various vestry members and their respective areas of responsibility. The proximity of these two spaces is convenient and allows for a good administrative working arrangement for the parish.

Shaw Hall – Christ the King’s Parish Hall and Education Building

Shaw Hall was built in 2000, and was dedicated to the memory of our first Christian Education Director and Junior Warden, Kathy Shaw. It has a library, an office, a nursery, and three classrooms, each room ranging from three hundred to four hundred square feet. It also contains a large meeting area of nearly two thousand square feet, a large working kitchen, two restrooms, and a storage room. Wireless internet is available throughout.

Our Financials

Through grace, Christ the King has maintained positive and stable finances. The budget is developed by the Finance Committee of the Vestry. The proposed budget is based on actual expenses of the previous year, projected revenue from pledges, and anticipated plate offerings. The church Treasurer is a key player in this formative phase. The budget is approved by the Vestry and then submitted for final approval to the congregation at the annual parish meeting. The budget then becomes the blueprint for our necessary and contracted expenses, plus a plan for our spiritual needs, and for our various outreach programs in the community.

In addition to pledge, plate, and memorial offerings, our parish conducts periodic fund raising activities. We have sold recipe books, held yard sales, parish dinners, silent auctions, a pig roast, and even an October Fest. These events are sources of both income and fellowship for our community.

Our assets, debts, and 2017 disbursements are summarized below. A detailed listing of the amounts budgeted is included in Appendix B.

In addition to monetary donations, Christ the King parishioners provide over $5,000 in value of “in-kind” gifts annually for the on-going benefit of the parish.

Through the years a particular strength of the Christ the King family has been our witness to faith in accomplishing significant non-budgeted projects. With the guidance of International Cooperating Ministries, we raised $10,000 for the establishment of the Khuoi Luong Church in Vietnam which has subsequently established two more churches in their area. Through project donations we have purchased and refurbished our pews ($9,500), re-tiled the floor in Shaw Hall ($5,600), painted the interior of both buildings, installed carpet in both buildings ($3,000), and replaced the kitchen ovens ($1,000).

Our CommunityChrist the King Episcopal Church, Charles Parish, is located in one of the most dynamic, culturally diverse and historically rich areas of the Commonwealth of Virginia. We are at 4109 Big Bethel Road in the southern end of York County. Our location is at the center of the area known as the Virginia Peninsula in the Tidewater region, bounded by the James and York Rivers and the Chesapeake Bay.

York County sits on the York River where it meets the Chesapeake Bay. Yorktown, Jamestown, and Williamsburg comprise the Historic Triangle of Virginia and are connected by the Colonial Parkway traversing the Peninsula from the York to the James River. We are three hours south of Washington, DC and less than an hour from the Southside cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach. The Outer Banks of North Carolina are two hours away, and heading west, our capital city Richmond, the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Shenandoah Valley, and the Skyline Drive are all within a one to three hour drive. Our area is a great place to raise a family, to be close to much history, and to enjoy a very high quality of life.

York County has a moderate climate with four seasons. The average annual temperature is 59.2°. January’s average is 39.1° and July’s is 82°. The average annual precipitation is 47”, including 5” of snowfall.

York County’s population is 67,000 people with a median age of 39.7 years. There are 24,600 households, with the vast majority consisting married couples. York County is part of the Greater Hampton Roads area which the US Metropolitan Statistical Department places at 1,800,000 people.

The Virginia Peninsula is served by two major highways, I-64 and US 17, and by the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. Bus and rail service, as well as major port facilities are also available.

The York County School Division (YCSD) provides public education in 11 elementary schools, four middle schools, and six high schools, including two specialty high schools. All YCSD schools are Fully Accredited based on the 2015-2016 Virginia Standard of Learning assessments. Student achievement and continuous student growth are the core priorities of the York County School Division. These priorities are demonstrated in both the full accreditation rate and the 94.6% graduation rate (2015).

The options for higher/continuing education include the College of William and Mary, Hampton University, Christopher Newport University, Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, Regent University, Virginia Wesleyan College, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Tidewater Community College, and Thomas Nelson Community College. The area also has a number of industrial and trade schools. Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia is three hours away.

Our area is served by three major regional hospital/healthcare systems: Bon Secours, Riverside Healthcare and Sentara Healthcare, as well as The Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.

Recreational and cultural opportunities abound in our area. Major historical sites include Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown Island and Settlement, Yorktown Battlefield, and the American Revolutionary Museum. There are many Civil War battle sites and the WWI Port of Embarkation site from which one million service personnel and supplies departed. In addition, there are 44 parks, 16 public and private golf courses, and several yacht clubs, marinas, and public beaches. Two theme parks, Busch Gardens and Water Country USA are located in Williamsburg.

The Hampton Coliseum hosts a variety of concerts, athletic events, and trade shows. The I. M. Pei-designed Ferguson Center for the Arts in Newport News hosts the Virginia Symphony and a variety of major performers in its two concert halls. The Mariner’s Museum is a National Maritime Museum, one of the largest maritime museums in North America. The Peninsula Fine Arts Center, the Virginia Living Museum, the US Army Transportation Museum, the Virginia War Museum and the Virginia Air and Space Center round out the area’s major museums. In addition, many art galleries, local musicians and professional and amateur theatrical groups contribute to the cultural scene. Our local paper, the Daily Press, keeps us informed about daily and weekly activities.

Ours is a community of diverse trades including shipbuilding, technological research, and international commerce. Newport News Shipbuilding builds the nation’s finest, technologically advanced military ships and is the region’s largest employer. The Port of Virginia and a strong military presence, exemplified by the Joint Base Langley-Eustis, the US Coast Guard Training Center at Yorktown, the Naval Weapons Station Yorktown and Cheatham Annex, serve as major employers. Canon Virginia, Liebherr America, Ferguson Industries, Ball Container Corporation and Anheuser-Busch Company LLC are major civilian employers located on the Peninsula.

We are proud to have many state and federal research facilities call our area home. NASA’s Langley Research Center conducts aerospace and atmospheric science research, wind tunnel testing, and high speed computer research. The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, known as Jefferson Lab, is a national nuclear physics laboratory advancing our knowledge of the building blocks of matter.
