Parish of St John’s Wood/The Gap
SUNDAY 17th July 2016 - Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Vocation - Profession
The Catholic Church uses the word vocation to talk about the purpose and goal
of a human being. Every human being born in this world is called to be a steward
of God’s creation. As a steward of creation we are all endowed with a personal
vocation and a profession. In general as a steward our vocation is to love God,
the Creator and to love our neighbours and to take care of the universe. Besides
a call to be a steward of creation each one has a personal vocation to pursue and
we can find out the personal vocation through constant prayers.
A word vocation in the modern world is commercialized and used in non-
religious contexts. Many people promote a career or a profession as a vocation.
The words vocation and profession are sometimes overlapped but there are
differences. First, everyone is endowed with gifts and talents to develop and we
use them to earn our living and to serve a common good and that is our
profession. A vocation is a personal response to God’s call to live out the Gospel
message, to be a living witness for Jesus, to be Christ’s bearer for others. It is the
call to love God and our neighbours for the greater glory of God. It is a call to
learn, to love and to serve the Lord and fulfil the promises made at baptism. It is
the call to see the purpose and meaning of our life in this world. The more we
are connected to God the clearer the purpose of life is and the more we see this
connectedness the more we are open ourselves to do God’s will. This gift of
wisdom helps us to give thanks to God with mind and heart and thank one
another for giving support of our vocation. Second, a vocation is something we
are supposed to make as a life time commitment while a profession we can keep
or make changes several times in life. Third, you can be an expert in your
profession but you can never be an expert in your vocation because our
vocation comes from God and we rely on God’s grace to keep our vocation.
Fourth, you need to updates your profession through readings and workshop
while your vocation is required to combat against constant temptations. Prayers
help to keep your vocation safe and firm through God’s grace.
Mary said nothing. We know not of her mind but Jesus told Martha that she gets
a better part. We know Martha has shown of her cooking skills while Mary was
listening to Jesus. ‘A better part’ Jesus said must be something better than a
profession; it must be a vocation. Hospitality is a Christian virtue we all need to
do when we are able to but don’t let them take control of our feelings. Both
profession and vocation are important; the former takes care of our physical
body while the latter takes care of our spiritual body. We need to remember
that eternal strength can empower external strength not the other way round.
Sometime external strength is a negative for internal strength.

Sacramental Program Catechist Comment: We pray with our whole being, our whole self. All our heart, mind, senses and, yes, even our bodies. In Mass we STAND when we are all praying togeth-er and when the Gospel is being read. We SIT when we are listening to the other readings and the homily. We KNEEL in reverence while the priest prays the sacred prayers of consecration over the bread and wine so that they become for us the body and blood of Christ. Simple really. Come to Sunday Mass and get a thorough weekly workout.
“…I am a minister in accordance with God’s
stewardship given to me to
bring to completion for you
the word of God.”Colos-sians 1:25
Believe it or not, we are all
called to evangelize – to
continuously grow in our
knowledge and relationship
with Jesus and to share it with
others. We may not be called
to evangelize like St. Paul, but
we should look for opportuni-
ties to share our Faith with
those closest to us, like our
family and friends. (Accessed on 12
July 2016 from http://archstl.org/stewardship/page/bulletin-inserts)
CAN YOU HELP? Our parish community has a long history of
offering religious education to primary age
children who do not attend Catholic schools.
To maintain this important ministry we re-
quire more helpers for term 3.
CAN YOU HELP? We need a leader for our younger group
(preferable with classroom experience) and
2 willing assistants. Job sharing is a possibility.
Perhaps you have other skills you could share
with us:- music, art, afternoon tea making,
classroom setup etc.. Our team of 7-10 com-
munity members are all volunteers with
one aim, to share our faith story with our
younger members.
We meet each Tuesday of Term at Mater
Dei from 3.15 to 4.15pm. All volunteers are
subject to Working with Children checks. Interested? Talk to Caryn at the office on
3300 6099 or drop by Tuesday and talk to
Mary.

Blessed Eucharist
Pope Francis encouraged everyone to visit the Blessed Sacrament every day, if possible.
“On this happy occasion which is offered to us, I encourage all the Faithful to always honor the
most blessed Eucharist,” the Pope said in the message, which was addressed to the president
of the Italian Bishop’s Conference, Cardinal Agnelo
Bagnasco.
The Pope referred to the Eucharist as “a sacrament of
love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity,” and he called the
faithful to be nourished by it “in order to be fraternally
united among themselves, and cooperate in the building
of the Church and the good of the world.”
“Moreover, I want to encourage everyone to visit – if
possible, every day – especially amid life’s difficulties, the Blessed Sacrament of the infinite love
of Christ and His mercy, preserved in our churches, and often abandoned, to speak filially with
Him, to listen to Him in silence, and to peacefully entrust yourself to Him.
