Entrance Antiphon Let us all rejoice in the Lord, as we celebrate the feast day in honour of All Saints, at whose festival the Angels rejoice and praise the son of God.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 24

These are the people who seek your face, O Lord.

The Lord’s is the earth and its fullness, the world, and all who dwell in it. It is he who set it on the seas; on the rivers he made it firm.

Who shall climb the mountain of the Lord? Who shall stand in his holy place? The clean of hands and pure of heart, whose soul is not set on vain things.

Blessings from the Lord shall he receive, and right reward from the God who saves him. Such are the people who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob.

These are the people who seek your face, O Lord.

Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, Alleluia. Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest, says the lord.

Alleluia.

Communion Antiphon Blessed are the clean of heart, or they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

admitted to the hospital so that we can provide pastoral care.

Time & Abilities and Financial Dedication Forms

Thank you to all who have completed their dedication forms, if you are using the

envelope system you can collect your dedication envelopes from the Baptistry. If

you have completed your forms, please put them in the first collection basket

during Mass today or next Sunday, or hand them in at the parish office.

An example of the need for financial contributions: The parish car no longer has

airconditioning because the compressor and condensor have given up. The first

quote is R9 700 including VAT.

Does God exist? What's the purpose of life? Why do we need organised religion? And why is there suffering in the world?

QUESTION EVERYTHING.

Our inclination to question our Catholic faith is not a bad thing - it can be beneficial, as it

leads us to seeking truth. That's why in this 4th term of Life Teen, we're breaking the

mould & simply answering our most commonly asked questions.

Join us on Sunday Evenings from 6:30-8pm!

Tonight’s Night: “QUESTION EVERYTHING” Next Week’s Night: “WHO WANTS TO BE A CATHOLIC”

For any further info, contact Brad Tomlin (072 502 1866) or follow our Facebook/ IG pages.

deposit into First National Bank, Branch Code: 221426, Account No: 508 445 46512,

Prayer for All Saints Day

We give you thanks, O God, for all the saints who ever worshiped you

whether in humble shelters or cathedrals,

weathered wooden churches or crumbling cement meeting houses

where your name was lifted and adored.

We give you thanks, O God, for hands lifted in praise:

manicured hands and hands stained with grease or soil,

strong hands and those gnarled with age

holy hands raised in prayer across the land.

We thank you, God, for hardworking saints;

whether hard-hatted or steel-booted,

head ragged or aproned,

blue-collared or three-piece-suited

they left their mark on the earth for you, for us, for our children to come.

Thank you, God,

for the tremendous sacrifices made by those who have gone before us.

Bless the memories of your saints, Lord.

May we learn how to walk wisely

from their examples of faith, dedication, worship, and love.

Nativity Figurines We are appealing for an artist with oil paints to touch

up the figurines which are displayed in the Nativity Scene which will be set up

at the Hyper Market in Advent. The figurines are in the upstairs Parish office. For those that can assist please contact Brian Hoogewerf on 0837800004.

Solemnity of All Saints Year C 3rd November 2019 Bernard Treacy OP

Commentary

First Reading (Rev 7: 2-4, 9-14) At a time when the newly developing Christianity was suffering the horrors of intense persecution, there was a need for reassurance that all was not in vain. Leaders were being singled out for aggressive attention, but ordinary members also were being attacked. This was because of their commitment to the message that there was no source of peace and justice higher than the Word-made-flesh who is also the Lamb to whom belong victory and majesty and power. The assurance people needed is offered to them in the vision recounted here. The victory of Christ over the forces of evil brings joy to ‘a huge number impossible to count’ from all nations, as well as to the faithful members of the tribes of Israel. The message is that trust in the power of Christ will be blessed with the loving touch of the hand of God, a guarantee that the forces of evil, however well organised, cannot prevail.

Second Reading (1 Jn 3: 1-3) Belonging to God can have multiple consequences: it can bring us hope, but it can also provoke a hostile reaction, a refusal to acknowledge the full meaning of being a child of God. At the time this epistle was being written there were many competing world-views which often referred to their devotees as children of the gods or as children of God. Unlike Gnostic understandings of that term, the Christian view is not that only an elite practising a specialist rite can attain this status. Instead, the author insists, as in Prologue to the Gospel of John, that becoming a child of God is a free gift available to everyone who accepts Jesus as the Word of God made flesh. There is nothing esoteric here: being a child of God is a gift that is shared with the one who came ‘that all might be saved’.

Gospel (Mt 5: 1-12) This passage occurs found in the Lectionary more frequently than any other: it is ascribed as a choice for weddings and for funerals, and for the celebrations of many saints. This is probably because it gives such a clear and welcome picture of the ideal follower of Christ. We should not deceive ourselves into thinking that references to the meek or to peace-seeking, or to being gentle or merciful, indicate that the Christian ideal is for a milk-and-water type of life. Nothing could be further from the truth. To pursue the values indicated here, and to do so consistently, requires a high degree of tenacity and persistence and real self-mastery, particularly at a time of persecution. In any environment where contrary values – such as aggression or self-aggrandisement or the unending pursuit of wealth – are praised and gain public approval, living faithfully in conformity with this vision still involves real spiritual strength, indeed of an heroic level.
