ST. THOMAS AQUINAS (JANUARY 28): By universal con-

sent, Thomas Aquinas is the preeminent spokesman of the Cath-

olic tradition of reason and of divine revelation. He is one of the

great teachers of the medieval Catholic Church, honored with the

titles Doctor of the Church and Angelic Doctor.

At five he was given to the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cas-

sino in his parents’ hopes that he would choose that way of life

and eventually became abbot. In 1239, he was sent to Naples to

complete his studies. By 1243, Thomas abandoned his family’s

plans for him and joined the Dominicans, much to his mother’s

dismay. Once free, he went to Paris and then to Cologne, where

he finished his studies with Albert the Great.

His greatest contribution to the Catholic Church is his writings.

The unity, harmony, and continuity of faith and reason, of re-

vealed and natural human knowledge, pervade his writings. One

might expect Thomas, as a man of the gospel, to be an ardent

defender of revealed truth. But he was broad enough, deep

enough, to see the whole natural order as coming from God the

Creator, and to see reason as a divine gift to be highly cherished.

The Summa Theologiae, his last and, unfortunately, uncompleted

work, deals with the whole of Catholic theology. He stopped work

on it after celebrating Mass on December 6, 1273. He died March

7, 1274.

WEDNESDAY EVENING MASS: Join us in celebrating Mass

every Wednesday evening at 5:30pm in the church.

Wednesday, January 29 - MCS - Reaching Out to Those in

Need

A central aspect of Catholic education is learning the im-

portance of service to others. When students take part in

service activities—both local and beyond—they demon-

strate the values and faith they gain through their Catholic

education and learn how to make the world a better place.

When they observe how others serve the community, they

gain an appreciation for how they can continue to serve

others their entire lives.

dedicated to a theme. Please remember these intentions during

your prayer this week!

Community

Diocesan CSW Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate

Conception. Art Show Reception following the Mass, Ms.

Walsh will receive the St. John Neumann Award for service to

Catholic Education!

Monday, January 27 -MCS - A Catholic Community:

A Reflection - The Gospel reveals to us that we cannot re-

ceive a full portion of God’s blessings if we are divided. We

must work together to bring about unity in our homes, school

and world. We must be forgiving and merciful to those who

seek to divide us. Prayer is the biggest weapon we have

against evil. Think for a moment about what you can do to

better help unify your school, family and world?

Tuesday, January 28 - Celebrating our Nation

Drop by our school lobby to write your prayer for world peace.

These prayers will be presented at the Saturday Liturgy dur-

ing the Presentation of Gifts.

Tuesday is also a Day of Giving to Catholic Schools. Check

out our FB Ad to support MCS! Thank you!
