Broadwood, Belloc and Beyond There have been a number of spin offs from my walk across Sussex in 2013. In modern parlance my project turned out to 'have legs.'! Among the contacts I made as a result, were historian and Belloc enthusiast, Chris Hare from Worthing and his wife, playwright Ann Feloy. Over a number of conversations the idea formed of having a Heritage Lottery funded project in Rusper. Chris applies for such funding and he and Ann have managed a number of projects. If given the go ahead, ours would begin in January 2017 and run for possibly two years. We hope to obtain financial backing for a village project with the potential to involve a wide cross section of our community and in partnership with Shipley. The working title is Broadwood, Belloc and Beyond. Lucy Broadwood, whose memorial is in our church is a figure of national importance in the folk song revival of a hundred and more years ago. Hilaire Belloc, a 'national treasure' himself shared her interest in the music and native culture of our county, and lived just down the road from here in Shipley. Tantalisingly, we don't know for certain that they ever met! If our plans succeed you could get involved: Join a community choir and learn the songs Lucy collected in our village locations, then record them on a CD. No previous singing experience necessarily required! Research historic sources including Lucy's extensive diaries, now kept in Woking. Find the 'holy grail' if Lucy tells us she met Belloc! Poetry/drama workshops for pupils in school based on Belloc's verses for children. Channel your inner naughty child! Maybe even take part in a community play exploring the fascinating lives and thought of these two figures…. I feel that the spirit of Lucy and Hilaire still inhabits our locale in some way, not least in the traditions of the Morris Men on May 1st and the fun and

frolics of Rusper Mayday. I hope that as many as possible can get involved in a project which aims to build on the rich legacy we owe to these two remarkable characters.

This will then continue on the first Sunday of each month until September. 5th June, 3rd July, 7th August and 4th September. Hope to see you.

Nick is here to minister to all who have need in our parishes. He is always ready to make a special visit when asked, likes to have an opportunity to visit newcomers and can arrange Holy Communion at home for the sick or housebound. He tries to take Thursday as a rest day each week so, apart from obvious cases of urgency, he would be grateful not to be troubled on that day.

NEXT MEETING THURSDAY 12TH MAY 7 – 9 IN RUSPER VILLAGE HALL

We shall be looking at the history of Faygate, how the coming of the railway changed life in Rusper, new roads to the station, the Holmbush Inn and

Wimlands Farm – and probably lots of other things as well!

EVERYONE WELCOME

Our meeting on Aprill 14th focussed on inns around Rusper – six inns for a parish of less than 1000 population does seem rather a lot! However, thanks to research by Jean Wood and others, we found that most of them started life as beer retailers where beer was sold from the front rooms of cottages, perhaps to scratch a bit more of a living – and probably they were situated on drovers roads for thirsty cattle drivers. These included the Lamb Inn, the Royal Oak at Friday Street, a cottage somewhere on the Faygate Road, and briefly at Saykers. In our look at the pubs we also included the Holmbush at Faygate, once part of Rusper Parish, built at the same time as the railway station, and also the Cherry Tree and the Frog and Nightgown (originally another Royal Oak) and The Misers (known as the Snug and Gully) on the Horsham road. If we include The Gate, that makes ten pubs in all! The Star and the Holmbush seem to be the only two who probably started life as inns.

More recent history of the pubs brought stories of the seventies and eighties at The Plough when the Ridge Farm recording studio was in action and famous musicians of the period came up to The Plough which was also owned and run by the Andrews family. And wild goings on at The Royal Oak at Friday Street were also remembered, when Oliver Reed was a regular.

Nothing to do with pubs, but we did also reminisce about the American visit of 1980 to raise money to replace the north roof of the church, which had unexpectedly fallen off the year before. At Lady Hawkes instigation, we invited rich Americans into our homes and raised some £11000 towards the new roof. A piece of the more modern history of Rusper. One of the ‘rich’ Americans is still coming each year, thirty six years on, to stay with her host family and was able to tell us in person what it was like, coming to a village which she couldn’t even find on a map!

BLISS “zzzzzzzz”

BLISS is a charity which helps premature babies, sick babies and the parents.

Our first grand child was born at 26 weeks weighing 1lb 8oz – just pick up a bag of sugar!!

Due to superb care from St Peters Hospital, Great Ormond Street and a huge thank you to the prem unit at East Surrey Hospital – young Paige has lived to tell the tale.

She is now 17 months old and bouncing around and making lots of noise – BLISS.

Our youngest son, Andrew, completed the Brighton Marathon on Sunday 17th April in 4.5 hours. His left leg muscle went at four miles but he soldiered on. A lot of time and training - all off his own bat – went in to this for his little niece. All proceeds will go to providing incubators and care for such early nippers.

Both Marchant and myself would like to thank all friends in and around the village for the thoughts, prayers and “listening time” given to us both.

Grateful thanks to all. Will end on a happy note – Paige is fine, daffs are out and sunshine is threating to shine!!!

Capel Tennis Club – Free Family Open Sessions Have you ever thought about playing tennis, but weren’t sure where to start?
