In Today’s Gospel reading the Jewish leaders continue to try to discredit Jesus. Most Jews in Roman-occupied Jerusalem intensely resented the Roman occupiers, their money, and their census tax. Only a few supported Herod Antipas, the Roman-appointed ruler of the region, who was Jewish in name only. This week the Pharisees collaborate with the Herodians to ask a tricky, unanswerable question. One answer will defy Jewish law and enrage the crowds; the other will defy civil law and invite arrest. How will Jesus answer the tricky question? How will he respond to the malevolent leaders? And what spiritual insights will he offer in the process? Jesus knows the intentions of the testers. He names their hypocrisy but doesn’t waste time on dialogue. By asking the Pharisees for the coin, he invites them to convict themselves: They obviously participate in the Roman system. The coin allows Jesus to move the question beyond what belongs to Caesar to the true issue — what good work should I be giving to God?
Jesus’ teachings addresses the challenge facing faithful people everywhere. Whether we are paying taxes or paying (with our time, attention, and money) for things we think are essential, we risk making the government, products, or the coins themselves the focus of our homage and attention. Consider Jesus’ teachings as a subtle restatement of God’s words to Cyrus in the Isaiah passage: “there is no God besides me.” So, Jesus recommends, do what is necessary in the world, but don’t give your heart to it. Give to God what belongs to God—all our heart and soul and mind. Give to God what the psalm suggests.

Service Opportunities for Middle School
and Junior High North End Soup Kitchen in Flint: Help cook and serve
lunch for the homeless at North End Soup Kitchen in Flint
on Saturday, October 28. We will leave St. Dan’s at 8:15
a.m. and return by 1:30 p.m. Permission slips are
available on the Cushing Center bulletin boards or online.
Families welcome and encouraged. Turn your completed
permission slip in to the Faith Formation Office to reserve
your spot!
Pancake Breakfast Help: Sign up on the Middle School or
Teen bulletin board to help at a Pancake Breakfast
throughout the year. You will be contacted when help is
needed!
Pack a Shoebox for Appalachia: See article below!
Check out the Youth Group and Middle School bulletin Boards in the
Cushing Center for other service opportunities throughout the year!
Shoeboxes for Appalachia Students and all members of the parish are invited to
participate in the filling and
decorating of a shoe box with small
gifts for a person living in the poverty
-stricken area of Appalachia.
Students can “earn” funds to purchase
the small gifts which are packed in a
shoebox and taken to Van Sant,
Virginia by Carl Roos each year. Please wrap your shoe box so
that the top can be removed separately. Return your filled and
wrapped shoe box by November 14, 2017. Thank you!
Called to Serve Program:
Required for Confirmation Prep II Students!
Get a head start on completing your Confirmation
requirements! All Confirmation Prep Year II students need
to attend a Called to Serve program to complete
Confirmation requirements. If you have not yet attended,
please mark your calendar for Saturday, October 28. The
workshop starts promptly at 9:00 a.m. & runs until 12:00 p.m.
in the Cushing Center. Pre-registration and a signed parent

Confirmation Prep II Students:
Confirmation Retreat Register now for the required Confirmation Retreat on
Sunday, November 19, 2017, from 1:30-7:30 p.m. at
Subiaco Retreat House in Oxford. We will carpool to
Subiaco. Registration/permission forms are now available
online and in the Faith Formation Office. A completed 2017-
18 Medical Treatment Release form is also required. Parents:

High School Youth Group High School Youth Group has kicked off for the fall! All high
school teens 9th-12th grade are welcome at our 6:30 p.m.
Wednesday Youth Group. Youth Group nights include
dinner and the evening program is led by teens. No sign, just
show up whenever you can.

Dine to Donate to SVdP! Our parish St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) conference helps those in need with rent, utility, and other emergency assistance. The need is great, and sometimes, the funding is pretty thin. Andiamo Trattoria in Clarkston is sponsoring a fundraiser for our conference. The fundraiser takes place through October 31. A portion of the customer’s total bill at lunch or dinner during the month of October will go to help our conference help those in need. NOTE: Please bring a copy of the fundraiser flyer with you to the restaurant to give to your server for an Andiamo’s donation. The flyer is available in the church gathering space, the Cushing Center, and on our parish Facebook page. Check it out, and we hope to see YOU there!!!
K of C Fifth Sunday Rosary The St. Daniel’s Council of the Knights of Columbus is inviting all members of the parish community to participate in our 5th Sunday Rosary Program. This service will be conducted October 29 after the 11:00 a.m.
Mass, using a finger Rosary. Knights will be providing all those in attendance with the finger rosaries and prayer booklets. Participants may also bring their own rosaries to use during the service.
Parishioner Needs Ride to Church We have a newly-registered parishioner who just moved to Clarkston and has been trying to walk to church for weekend Mass. She lives off of Waldon, by the alternative high school (where the farmer’s market is on Saturdays). She is older with some health problems, and the walk has proven too much for her. She so wants to join her parish family for Mass! She usually attends the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, but would be willing to attend the 5:00 p.m. Saturday Mass. The only glitch is that it’s too hard for her to get into higher vehicles (like Jeeps). Cardiac Support Group Need a pacemaker, stent, or facing heart surgery? Have questions or need someone to talk to? You’re not alone! We are thinking of starting a cardiac support group that would meet here at St. Daniel’s. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, please send an email to

Annual Sleeping Bags for the Homeless Event Please consider assisting with the annual Sleeping Bags for the Homeless event at the Father Blasko North End Soup Kitchen in Flint on Saturday, November 18. Last year for the fourth time, members of St. Daniel Parish joined together with Clarkston United Methodist Church (CUMC) to support the event, with our parish contributing over 50 sleeping bags (along with many other items) and over 20 volunteers at the event! The purpose of SBFTH is to gather, deliver, and distribute sleeping bags and other useful winter items to over 200 homeless people in Flint just prior to the onset of winter. It is a wonderful opportunity to join together with CUMC as joint representatives of the Clarkston community to support a very worthwhile cause.
How can you help? Glad you asked!
We are seeking donations of the following new or gently used items: Sleeping bags; coats; boots; gloves/mittens; hats; warm clothing; socks; shoes; toiletries; $5 McDonald’s or Kroger gift cards; etc. If you have any items to donate, you can drop them off at CUMC (6600 Waldon Rd.) any day prior to the event.
We are seeking volunteers to participate in SBFTH. Participants are asked to meet in the parking lot of CUMC, 6600 Waldon Rd., at 9:00 am on November 18 to carpool to the Father Blasko North End Soup Kitchen (735 East Stewart Ave., Flint). Participants will return to CUMC around 1:00 p.m. Volunteers will assist with set-up, and help guide homeless families through the “shopping” process. Individuals over age 18 or families with children over age 8 are welcome to participate.

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Through the prophet Isaiah, God declares to powerful king Cyrus that
He, and no other, is Lord. In St. Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us
that while God expects good stewards to pay their fair share of taxes to
the government, our ultimate loyalty is
to Him. His ways should reign supreme
in our lives, such as when government
supports immoral threats to human life,
Christian marriage, human rights, and
injustice. We, as Christ’s disciples, are called to take a stand against
this misuse of funds and authority. St. Paul, in his First Letter to the
Thessalonians, acknowledges the struggles the faithful have in follow-
ing Christ in any era. As we strive to make stewardship a way of life in
today’s hostile culture, we must, in a spirit of evangelization, draw
closer to Jesus and His moral teaching. Consider joining a parish faith
formation program or enrolling in classes at Sacred Heart Major Semi-
nary to strengthen your knowledge of Jesus’ moral truth.

TODAY IS MISSION SUNDAY This World Mission Sunday, is a special mission on which we unite ourselves with Catholics all over the world to pray and sacrifice for the missionary efforts of the Church.
The observance of world Mission Sunday is truly “worldly” as prayers and support of the missionary work of the Church is done in every parish church and chapel throughout the entire world. All Catholics respond to the request for this special day by our Holy Father who has asked the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith to plan and promote this holy work of “First Evangelization.” That is what the Lord is asking us today as we reach out to those servant-missionaries who are giving their lives for the spread of the gospel. They have truly gone to the main roads of the world and have invited so many to the Lord’s banquet. We observe the annual day of prayer and sacrifice for the missions today. We unite ourselves also with our fellow Christians all over the world who with us attempt to share our faith with others, especially those who have not yet heard the name Jesus. Today offers us the opportunity to join our missionaries in the “holiest and greatest work of the Church.” Please be generous in supporting the Pontifical Mission Society for the Propagation of the Faith which is the Church’s principal means of spreading the gospel throughout the world.

explore the meaning of life. Each talk looks at a different
question around faith and is designed to create conversation.
