Parish Council Stop PressSpeeding and Traffic Calming UpdateAs many of you will be aware, there have been a large number of recent accidents and near misses in St. Bees, including 2 young children being hit by cars in the past few months. Inappropriate speed kills and injures – and speeding in St. Bees is no exception. We have many dangerous junctions and narrow roads with sharp bends, parked cars, poor visibility and often no pavements, together with a large number of children and elderly people. This is not the place to speed.

Having completed the road safety improvements on the Whitehaven Road approach to the village and the safety chicane near St Bees School, we have now developed proposals for safety improvements for our next 2 priority areas: Outrigg and the Egremont Road approach to the village near the Fairladies estate. These comprise of 'gateway' rumble strips and better markings on the approach to the 30mph limits (like those we have put on the Whitehaven Road approach to the village), a footpath on Outrigg from Hillside to the village school, so parents can park and walk safely into the school, and a traffic island near the Fairladies junction to slow traffic in this area. We are currently in the process of obtaining funding and approvals for these schemes. We are also pushing the Highways Team to implement 20mph limits in the New Year when new legislation will make this easier.

In the meantime, we have obtained a mobile S.I.D. (Speed Indicator Device) from the police and are moving it around the village to warn drivers who are speeding. The police have also pulled over several drivers and warned them for speeding, and Sellafield have written to all staff and contractors reminding them to use the main roads and drive carefully through neighbouring villages. Thank you to the majority of drivers who have reduced their speeds to safer levels. Unfortunately like many villages, St. Bees does have some idiots who seemingly don't care about themselves or others and don't heed the warnings. Especially for them, we have arranged for the police speed camera van to visit the village so they can look forward to points and fines in the New Year. You can do your part by driving carefully, which will naturally slow down the cars behind you. You can also email PCSO Bradley with the number plates and details of any v e h i c l e s y o u s e e b l a t a n t l y e x c e e d i n g t h e 3 0 m p h l i m i t s : [email protected]

Illegal ParkingWe know that parking is a problem in St. Bees. We pay £2,300 each year to Copeland Borough Council to keep the Station car park as a free car park to ease the parking problems in the centre of the village. The Parish Council also own and maintain the Fairladies car park to provide additional free off-street parking capacity for this area of the village, at a cost of around £850 this year. Please make use of the free off- street parking available and avoid parking where it obstructs access to properties and around junctions which reduces visibility for drivers and pedestrians. Dangerous illegal parking directly contributed to one child being knocked down near the school recently.

Continued on inside back cover

A list of areas to be targeted by the parking wardens has been forwarded to Cumbria Highways. Thank you to everyone who responded with suggestions – we will do what we can to address the problems.

Dog FoulingThe Parish Council have tried to address this in a number of ways – we have purchased poop-a-scoop bags which are available free from the village store and the beach front cafe (we spent £200 on free bags last year), we have pushed for and purchased additional bins (you can use any bin for bagged dog waste), and have supported the rule changes to require dogs to be kept on leads in the village (except on the beach itself). We have also worked with the enforcement officers to identify problem areas and several people have been warned and fined.

Unfortunately, a handful of individuals are still causing problems. It has been noticed that some of these events may coincide with workers who periodically change shifts. We will continue to work with CBC enforcement officers to fine any remaining offenders.

How you can help: If you notice someone who doesn't clean up, either remind them of the potential £500 fine or phone the enforcement officer for St. Bees, Allan Graham on 0845 054 8600 / 07793 177 331 or email [email protected] and provide details of the event.

Forthcoming events:Help for Heroes!

You will all have watched the TV coverage of those returning home from current conflicts overseas. In the New Year, St. Bees will be trying to play its part in helping them by hosting a progressive meal in the village. This is a really fun event where you have starters, main courses and desserts at different houses, moving around and meeting different people for each course. It's a great way to meet new people and a lot of fun! Interested? Email [email protected] and I'll add you to the mailing list for further details.

We are also planning a long weekend of celebrations from 2-5 June 2012 to mark the Queens Diamond Jubilee. If you would like to be involved please email [email protected]

From the Vicar

“By his father he is English, by his mother he is American--to my mind the blend which makes the perfect man.” With these words, author Mark Twain introduced Winston Churchill on December 13, 1900 to an American audience. Churchill was in the States to lecture about his escape from a prisoner of war camp in the Boer War.

Twain's compliment reflects something of the glory of Christmas -- of two different components making for perfection together. This is so in the Lord Jesus Christ (who is neither English nor American!) - Jesus' perfection is in being fully God and fully man. Jesus lived a perfect life, yet he is not indifferent to our suffering, temptation and sorrow. He was tempted in every way, just as we are, yet without sin. And he was a man of sorrows, well acquainted with grief. So God himself understands the life situation you are in, because he has experienced it.

Jesus coming to be born in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago was not only about empathy, and not even primarily so. He was on a mission, which was nothing less than the salvation of men and women.

One of the carols that we will sing during Advent and Christmas arose from two sources in the author's experience: the first was his desire to put into song the marvelous promises of salvation (and warnings of judgement) in Psalm 98; the second was the frustration of a teenager from the dirge-like singing in his local church. His constant complaining led him to be challenged by an exasperated elder to "Give us something better, young man." The young man did just that. He

was Isaac Watts, and one of the 600 hymns he wrote was “Joy to the World”.

“Joy to the world, the Lord is come!

Let earth receive her King;

Let every heart prepare Him room,

And Heaven and nature sing...”

“Joy to the World” is primarily an Advent hymn (on the theme of Jesus returning to judge and rule with justice, eg, “He rules the world with truth and grace”). Yet the carol has become associated with Christmas in our usage (as it speaks of the joy of God's love and salvation, eg, “He comes to make His blessings flow, far as the curse is found”).

Our own experience of Christmas can have a dual nature: joy, of course, in the celebration, feasting and joy of the season. For many of us, it includes some difficulty, as grief, relationship strain or painful memories are more poignant at Christmas. The invitation to each of us is to come to the Lord Jesus with our joy and pain, and experience his friendship and leadership in life. I hope this joy of Christmas is yours.

Warmly in Christ,

Clifford Swartz

The autumn sees many Harvest Thanksgiving services in churches and schools across our area. A mum of a young boy at St Bees School, Jessie Hendry, coordinates the work of the Foodbank in West Cumbria, and sought to get more people involved, after her son Hugo got a dozen pupils to support the effort last year.

The Vicar also serves as Chaplain of St Bees School, and the idea began to snowball. Under the capable leadership of Rosalie McAndrew, a team from the Priory gathers harvest gifts into baskets for many villagers in St Bees. Rosalie's team set aside non-perishable goods for the Foodbank this year as well. When arranging a Harvest service at the Priory, the Head Teacher at St Bees Village Primary School, Mr John Wood, kindly agreed to encourage the children to bring in canned goods for the Foodbank. A van was organised to deliver the donated goods to the Foodbank following the service in the Priory. It was standing room only for the Village School's Harvest Thanksgiving service, in which the children sang beautifully, the teachers led their charges well, and all joined in singing hymns, prayer and reflecting on the Bible as thanks was given to God for his kindness to us.

Amidst the difficulties of the times we face, and the sobering thought that there are those in our society who face hunger, we can take encouragement not only for an abundant harvest, but also the initiative of a young boy and his mum to get a whole village working together to serve our community. Cliff Swartz

Old College Hall AppealWe are now making progress with the planned work and fund raising for the Old College Hall re-roofing and internal restoration which will provide the church and the community with a splendid mediaeval style hall with modern equipment - seating, staging, lighting, heating, etc. - making it a multi-functional venue available to the whole community, suitable for meetings, functions, lectures, concerts and recitals and plays.

The total amount required if we are to achieve our aims is £193,000, but we already have £65,000 from English Heritage, plus an additional £10,000 from Priory funds. Other donations bring the total to nearly £80,000. Applications have been made to WREN and Copeland Community Fund for £50,000 each and for £7,000 to CWMET. We are cautiously optimistic about these! Should our optimism prove justified we need to find a further £6,000 between now and April 2012, the proposed starting date.

Full details of the project can be found on the village web site - http://www.stbees.org.uk/priory_project/index.htm. This also gives some details of the other necessary work on the Priory - the transept roofs, the Willis organ and hopefully new heating system.

If you would like to donate to this initial Old College Hall project you may do so by sending or giving your donation to any churchwarden (see ABC for details) or you can also do so on-line using your credit or debit cards via BT’s MyDonate facility -

News from Patrick and Deb Bryan

Tip of the Month

December - Now that Winter is upon us make sure that all areas of open soil are suitably covered to protect from Frost. Any material would be suitable for example - Straw, Mill Bark, Trimmed Limbs from Pruning's and that most precious of precious gifts for our gardens, fallen leaves!!!

Happy gardening and have a Blessed Christmas Season.

I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, because I hear about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints. (Philemon 1: 4-5)

For Patrick, St Bees is the place of childhood pranks, three rounds of golf a day and a very happy life growing up in the vicarage! When I first visited St Bees in December of 1994, it seemed like the back of beyond; a remote and windswept village on the edge of the Irish Sea! I soon realised however, that St Bees is a very special place (not just because of Patrick!), and it is by no means a backwater, but a place of culture and learning, with influences from and to the whole world. We have really appreciated the love and prayerful support of friends in St Bees over the years.

In Asia we long to see the church grow, especially where it is not yet strong. We spent several years living in a large city with many different ethnic groups. It was not an easy place to live: the government were not always pleased to have foreigners around and there was no international school, so our children needed to learn at home, but the fellowship amongst believers from all over the world was very special and we spent several happy years there.

In 2008 we returned to the UK to have our third child and for our older two to attend school. Patrick started teaching History again and we thought we were settled for the foreseeable future, but God kept nudging us towards going overseas again. In January 2009 Patrick was offered a role with Interserve based in Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand where there is an international school for our children to attend and many mission organisations have regional offices. After prayerful consideration, we decided to accept this new role and by the end of 2009 we had moved back to Asia.

Patrick travels several times a year to visit Interserve personnel as well as those in other agencies, encouraging them and helping them to thrive where they are. He also recruits new partners, arranges orientation programmes and conferences and networks with others. The church in Asia is growing and yet there is still a need for partnerships with those who are willing to serve: teaching, sharing professional skills and encouraging local believers as they themselves reach out with the good news. Deb is involved in supporting a bible translation project; the New Testament is finished, but there is still a long way to go to complete the Old Testament. Deb receives draft texts from the translators and gets people in the target language to read them to make sure that the finished bible will be clear, accurate, natural and well accepted.

It is a privilege to be able to make use of our experience, languages and love of Asian peoples in a new context. Our children enjoy being at school here and whilst it is a city, Chiang Mai reminds me a little of St Bees: the school and the church draw people in from all over the world, and our church sees its mission as: 'Embracing our world with the heart of God'. When he prays my father in law, Philip Bryan often includes the phrase, 'we pray for all those whose lives we touch'. Wherever we are, as believers in Jesus Christ, we are connected, and our lives touch many. Today we are praying for St Bees Priory Church and all those whose lives you touch: in St Bees, in the UK, in Asia and all over the world. [email protected]

News from the Village SchoolWe returned to school to a day of Halloween activities with children dressed as witches, cats, wizards and other such characters! A good fun way to start the half term!Harvest FestivalThe Harvest Festival held in St Bees Priory was well attended by parents and grandparents. Thank to the priory for allowing us to use the church as space within school is proving to be limited. Thanks also to Rev Swartz for his words and prayers. Your donations of non perishable foods have gone to Cumbria Food Bank and your monetary donations have been shared between the church, to help cover heating costs, and West Cumbria Hospice at Home, school's adopted charity this year.Fundraising ActivitiesOur school once again took part in the Samaritan's Purse Shoe Box Appeal and thanks to the generosity of parents and residents of the village, we were able to pass on 51 boxes to the organisation. Many thanks to all who put together a shoebox. The staff and children took part in a non uniform day to raise money for Jeans for Genes which is a national charity raising money for children with genetic disorders. This funds the care and support they need now and also the research which could change their futures. We were able to send them just over £150 to help their cause.TripsOur Y3 children, as part of their history topic work, visited Tullie House to study the Vikings. Children gain such a lot from these visits which help enhance their studies. The Y2 children were visited in school by the Tullie House Outreach service. Staff visit with artefacts & appropriate dress; this time teaching about Florence Nightingale. We are very fortunate in that lots of our parents, grandparents and friends of the school come in on a regular basis to our weekly workshop activity sessions for which we would like to say a public thank you. Without their commitment we wouldn't be able to do all the activities they help with, such as baking, design and technology and other craft activities.Diary Dates

Thank you to everybody who participated in our November events. We were overwhelmed with the turn out for the Firework Display and together with the Parish Council feel that this was another successful and enjoyable occasion – we were extremely thankful that the weather was kind!

thDecember is a short month for us and we will finish the term, on Wednesday the 14 with our annual Service of Lessons and Carols, which this year will be held at midday. This will give our boarding students the opportunity to participate in the Service and then be able to embark on their homeward journeys whilst it is still light. The library will remain open and supervised until 4.00 p.m. for those pupils whose parents are unable to collect them after the service.

If you are still looking for that perfect Christmas gift we are currently selling prints of the School depicting a summer cricket match on the crease. The print is taken from an original painting by local artist and parent, Graham Jones and money raised from the sale of the prints will be put towards the purchase of an electronic display screen for the Main School reception area. If you would like to view the print you are most welcome to come and take a look at the display copy currently on show in our reception area. Details on availability and how to make your purchase can be obtained from Jane Hawley or Claire Armstrong in the Marketing and Admissions Office on 01946 828010/828012.

thThe 11+ and 13+ entrance examinations are due to take place on Saturday the 25 of February 2012 and registrations are still being received. If you would like your child to be entered for the examinations please ring Jane Hawley on the number detailed above and she will be delighted to advise you.

A Century ago …… every villager would have known Mr. James Graham. He had lately retired to Seamill Lane after sixty years in Main Street – in the three-storey house known as 'Holmcroft' between Bega flats and the Post Office. In his day it had a wide shop window.

In 1847, aged fifteen, Belfast-born James arrived at Holmcroft to be apprenticed to William Finlinson. He was a Master Shoemaker with a flourishing business in boots, shoes and the still commonplace clogs. Living at Holmcroft were seven Finlinsons, three journeyman shoemakers, three apprentices, a College student and a serving girl. James must have thought it a little crowded!

As St. Bees grew the establishment prospered. Mr. Finlinson became Postmaster as well as shoemaker. James prospered too, and around 1863 bought the business for himself. He added other firms' footwear to his own, and ran both the shoe and the postal sides until, at seventy, he passed them on to his son “Herbie”. That done, he retired to Blythe Place.

But James' interests had reached far beyond letters and shoes. He had been Chairman of the St. Bees Gas Company, and Parish Council Vice-Chairman. For nearly sixty years he sang in the Church Choir. He served on the Shepherds Charity Committee and was an official of the Sancta Bega Lodge of Oddfellows. As a newspaper commented: “Anything to promote the welfare of the village and its inhabitants had encouragement from Mr. Graham”.

Most noteworthy, however, was his service to the Priory Church. He took up duty as Parish Clerk on St. Crispin's Day 1865 - pleased at the aptness of the date, St. Crispin being the Patron Saint of Shoemakers. He held that post without a break for the next fifty-five years. His time saw the coming and going of five Vicars, the major restoration of the Church, the Theological College's closure and the arrival of our fine Willis organ.

Probably no church officer has seen such change since.

James Graham died suddenly in 1920, leaving a widow, three sons and four daughters. At his funeral the Priory was packed; the Choir met the coffin at the gate, and the Sancta Bega Oddfellows bore it to the graveside. The grave was lined in white and green - a reference perhaps to James' Belfast origin. Can anyone confirm that this was a custom?

The Air we Breathe

On a miserable evening Philip Barratt, speaking on “The air we breathe”, informed and entertained an appreciative audience. He covered the various layers of the atmosphere, the formation of the atmosphere, its chemical composition, aspects of pollution, global warming and other related topics. The talk was illustrated with interesting slides and an amusing video. Refreshments included fairy cakes provided by Jane King, which were iced with chemical symbols of the gases which make up the air.

A reminder - all events hosted by the Friends are open to everyone.
