September is perhaps one of the busiest times of the year.

I don’t think that’s because this year it comes after the furlough period we have had on activities due to the pandemic – it is true every year.

School restarts. The harvest is happening, even as we prepare to celebrate it. We plan towards Christmas. We (hopefully) have choices of where to holiday in the year to come,even as we look back on how we have spent this summer.

There is a refreshment with becoming busy again.

That’s so true of our church life, and of course of our newly re-opened and refurbished hall,which had a thorough testing with the residence of the Urban Saints over the summer, whichfor us and them was a wonderful success.

We have been living with the hope that, just around the corner, things will be able to get back to normal. We are starting to believe that things will. We no longer feel as ‘over-shadowed.’

However, let me gently remind you that for us our starting points are Christmas, Easter andPentecost: God the Father presents his Son Jesus, God raises Jesus to life as Saviour, God sends the Holy Spirit as his abiding and transforming presence among us.

These are huge interruptions in things being normal, because there is a normal that God intends that is beyond the humdrum.

Beyond the ‘emergency stop’ that was the knee jerk reaction of our nation to the pandemicat the beginning, it has been a rich period of church life, with fellowship together that hasbeen special and fruitful. Perhaps unexpectedly – or should we have known better!

We have a God of surprises who delights to work with us to enrich our lives, and the livesof those we touch. He invites us to play and exercise our faith to see what is around thecorner – with expectation.

Our mission is not to settle for things getting back to normal, but to see normal transformed!

The adventure is open to us all.

Mothers’ UnionWell, we are back! It felt so good to see everyone together again. 20 members werepresent at our September Communion Service in Church (the usual start to our September meeting). Thank you Stef for once again providing an inspirational service.

We followed this Service with a free and easy first meeting in the hall with a brewand a chat before getting down to the serious(!) business.

We have eventually found out about Henry who was a constant companion to Lyn during lockdown last year and into this year. She actually brought Henry to themeeting, and we were pleased to meet him (and his wives) at last. Lyn had of coursebeen working on a beautiful cross-stitch embroidery of Henry VIII and his wives. We know that Lyn does do some wonderful needlework but she has surpassed herselfthis time. Well done Lyn and thank you for bringing this one for us to see.

Joan had brought some Mothers Union Christmas Cards from the Deanery on a saleor return basis, as well as our new Diaries for 2022. We were also asked to contribute50p each towards a present for our Diocesan President Enid Nutland who retires atthe end of this year.

Dorothy then gave us a forward look to the meetings for the rest of this year and tothose that she had managed to rearrange from last year as well as new ones up tonext June. These were discussed by the Committee at a meeting in August.

OUR MEETINGS FOR THIS YEAR CARRY ON:

October 12th – Wave of Prayer Service to open followed by Jean Jamieson with atalk on her visit to China together with artefacts from that visit. There will also be aBring and Buy sale.

November 9th – We have a visit from Francis King who will tell us about the MercyShips and the wonderful work that they do. We did have Francis a few years ago andit will be interesting to see how they have progressed since then.

December 14th – Christmas Party and Jacobs Join.

If any member requires transport to any of our meetings, particularly through thewinter months/dark nights, please let me know and we will arrange for someone topick you up. I know that some of you don't like driving at night.

Donations to the Building ProjectThe Building Project team, thank you all for your donations, although the mainwork is now completed to enable us to use the hall, there are still jobs to do. The storage cupboard fronts in the hall need replacing. There is paving to be completed around the back of the hall in the garden. It has been suggested that thefence at the front of the hall is in need of replacement. The car park is in need ofattention, resurfacing/white lining. So your donations are still needed.

round that. You don't have to read music, but if

you have a good voice you will be very welcome.

Many of you will have passed the church field this summer and have wondered what wasgoing on. Tents, gazebos, hay bales and young people running round making lots of noise(poor Stefan living next door). What were they doing?

For four weeks this summer the church hall and field were used by Nefyn camps. Nefyn camps come under the banner of Urban Saints. For those of you not familiar with thename Urban Saints maybe you’ve heard of Crusaders (Crusaders was renamed Urban Saintsin 2007).

SO WHAT WERE NEFYN CAMPS DOING IN WRIGHTINGTON?

In any other summer Nefyn camps can be found in Nefyn on the Llŷn Peninsula, a beautifulpart of the world.

This year Welsh covid restrictions were going to make it very difficult. The Nefyn committeelooked around for suitable re-location sites in the north west of England and received a warmwelcome from Anne and Stefan when we initially visited. The church PCC agreed to us coming and 6 weeks later tents were being put up and children were arriving.

Nefyn camps were started back in 1962. It all started when one young Crusader told hisClass Leader, “My mum won’t let me go to Crusader Camps at St David’s. I’d have to changetrains twice and the journey takes 8 hours”. This triggered the vision and the planning forthe first Manchester Area Crusader Camp, which took place on a field in Nefyn in August1962 and 59 years later they are still going strong.

Facilities have obviously changed a lot during that time. Initially there the toilets were earthlatrines, and sumps were dug for wastewater, lighting was paraffin hurricane lamps, with “Tilley” lamps in the marquee. Nowadays on the farmer’s field, where cows are keptduring the rest of the year, we have plumbed toilets and showers, electric lighting in themarquee and mains gas ovens in the cookhouse but the young people and leaders still sleepin tents. The activities on camp have changed less during that time. Nefyn favourites including ‘Hunt the leader’, ‘Cluedo’, ‘Crocker’, ‘Volcanoes’ and ‘Wanted’ have remained firmfavourites for years.

This summer 142 young people and 110 leaders camped at St James. We ran 7 camps, each3 night long for young people aged 9-18. The days were run as much as possible on typicalNefyn lines and included daily quiet times, evening meetings, meals and lots of games andfun. At the heart of everything we do we aim to communicate the love of God. Althoughwe missed the beach and sea, we loved joining you in Wrightington, and having the use ofyour field and fabulous church hall.

You have been so generous in lending your facilities to us for 4 weeks, especially after all thefundraising and hard work you’ve put into the development of the church hall. We hopewe’ve looked after them well for you and we were so happy to contribute £3800 to yourchurch funds (£5 per person per night). It was such a joy to partner with you in mission. A special thanks to the PCC for agreeing to us using your facilities, to Stefan for putting upwith the noise, for Ann for going above and beyond to help make it all happen, for Petermowing the field and supplying hay bales and to charity farm for allowing leaders to use theshowers (which probably weren’t used as much as they should have been!)

We hope to be back in Nefyn next summer for our 60th year of camps but thanks again foryour generosity this year and if you know any young people who would like to join us nextyear please see www.nefyncamps.co.uk

Play and Praise is now back again – 10.30am to 12.15pm – every

Wednesday during term time. This group is run by the Mothers Union

for parents and children from 0-5.

Children must be accompanied by a parent, grandparent or carer.

We have lots of toys to play with, as well as a slide, ride-a-longs, prams

and dolls. We have a storytime and a singing time followed by tea and

toast. We extend a warm welcome back to those who have been before

and to all new families joining us for the first time.

Hello from everyone at Heskin Pemberton’s school,

i hope you’ve all had a peaceful, enjoyable and relaxing summer. although we love the holidays, it really isgreat to get back to school and see everyone again. as well as lots of familiar faces, this year, we have alsowelcomed 16 new children to our school. they’ve all settled in amazingly well and are making lots of newfriends.

over the summer, one of our hard working teaching assistants, miss Dean, became mrs stringfellow. i’m sure you’ll agree that there’s nowt like a good wedding! We are delighted for mr & mrs stringfellow andwe all wish them both a long and happy life together.

as you may be aware, Chorley was host to the G7 speakers’ Conference this year and Heskin Pemberton’s,as always, played its part in welcoming these important people, from all over the world, to our little bit oflancashire. not only did we take part in the Chorley tidy Up but martha, one of our year 6 pupils, represented our school at the conference itself. she met sir lindsay Hoyle and all of the other delegates,before helping with the tree planting ceremony at astley Park. What an exciting start to the year!

at the end of september, our older pupils were treated to a visit by the ex-Preston north end footballer,matt Walsh. matt put our children through their paces with some football skill development drills andthen spoke about the importance of healthy eating for not only footballers but for everyone. it was agreat day and we look forward to seeing matt back at our school very soon.
