Pastoral Letter - the Revd Arthur Champion

As I write this letter the mood of the nation is one of relief and thanksgiving that the worst of the pandemic appears to be over and life is rapidly returning to something like normal… yet by the time you read this everyone could easily be anxious about a second peak of infections.

How then are we to live with such uncertainty? Whilst reflecting on this question I’ve remembered some valuable lessons from the 1980’s when Margaret and I were newly married and living in Sheffield. At that time the parish church where we had met was going through a massive redevelopment project jointly with the local Baptist church. Most members of the congregation were tithing (giving 10% of their income) and some were even double tithing to finance the building work. Some couples like ourselves were so committed to the building project that we put off starting a family.

In the wider world Mrs Thatcher, who had recently entered No 10 by quoting from St Francis, was struggling to maintain peace and order in Northern Ireland. Cold War tensions were running high with US cruise missiles arriving at Greenham Common and Molesworth. The UK economy was in recession, there was massive inflation and the coal miners were on strike.

We had a brief escape from such dark days by hiring a car and borrowing a cottage in the North Yorkshire Moors. It was during an evening stroll around the village of Lastingham that we stumbled across an important insight. We were visiting the parish church which is famous for its unique crypt. It was built on the site of the AD 654 monastery and is where St Cedd is believed to be buried. The Saxon crypt was similar to Duntisbourne Rouse. Downstairs the atmosphere was dark and mysterious. It was very quiet and felt like a special holy place.

Back in the Nave I spotted some leaflets on a table. I picked one up and read the message to Margaret: “Man proposes but God disposes” from Proverbs 19: 21. Such a simple and yet profound message somehow lodged in my consciousness as though the Almighty had spoken a word of prophecy.

I realised that people make their plans but God alone determines how things turn out. When back in Sheffield again, I had a word with the vicar,

Parish Link – August/September 2020 ….6

and he agreed we could start a regular “prayer for peace” meeting. I’m sure the same thing was happening in countless churches at that time. The next 10 years were tough with many casualties of terrorism, political instability and mass unemployment but by the grace of God the UK emerged into brighter days. Our revamped parish church was opened “free of debt and to the glory of God.” Many young couples like ourselves were blessed with children.

In the same way, during this pandemic we too are called to remember that God is good and faithful. He longs to hear our prayers and will always answer; maybe not in the way we expect but always providing what will be in our best long-term interest. Today the church is being called to work and pray for the coming of God’s kingdom. Please will you accept this challenge?

Growing links with Stratton Court Care Home - Revd David

I have been visiting Stratton Court Care Home almost since it opened. I watched it being built with anticipation and was delighted to be invited in to visit the first residents. The facilities are outstanding; modern and welcoming and I have always found the staff and residents friendly and pleased to see me. I look forward to my weekly visits and especially to our services of Holy Communion which seem well appreciated by those who come each week. It can be quite an effort for some to get there, but with the help of the staff they manage to be at our weekly worship.

We meet in the lounge and have time to chat before and after our service. Getting to know the residents is a great privilege and we laugh a lot. We use a traditional form of words for our services because that is what is familiar to most of them. They grew up with that service and some know the words without having to read from the service book. Even those who struggle to see the words or follow the service are often able to join in with the Lord’s Prayer and this is one of the places in my ministry where I truly feel the value and connection of the Communion service. The familiar words and actions, the sense of being community together with God are all very powerful. I feel that I receive as much from the service as our little congregation does.

Afterwards I am able to visit some of the people who couldn’t make it to the service in their rooms.

Page 8: Parish Link - churnvalley.org.uk · MUSIC LESSONS Piano, Oboe, Recorder, Theory & History of Music Coronavirus update May 2020 Lessons can only be offered online. Please enquire by

The Coronavirus has meant that I have been unable to come in and bring the comfort of our service and prayers at a time when I’m sure it would have been highly valued, but as soon as we were able I was invited to visit; first to stand outside in a mask, to say hello and conduct short prayer services, and now to carefully return to a more normal worship pattern which we all enjoy, despite the masks and frequent hand cleansing!

I have known some of the people who live at Stratton Court for quite a while now and it is always a pleasure to visit and spend a while with my friends there.

And now a perspective from Aura Care Living…..

Aura Care Living has taken a unique approach in ensuring its residents have access to religion while living in its care homes. This has been an overwhelming success and has allowed those who wish to continue in their religious practices to do so by accessing regular communions, prayer groups and blessings.

After talking with the residents at Stratton Court Care Home, we noticed that many were concerned they may be unable to continue their religious practices when moving into a home. Mobility issues could also mean they might be unable to partake in some of the religious activities in the local area. We therefore recognised the need to implement a system by which residents could practice whatever religion they wanted, and we took note of their denomination and chosen religious practices.

Our residents now enjoy a weekly visit from Revd David who has been practicing socially distanced visits in a safe environment in our Courtyard. For those who unfortunately are unable to leave their rooms, he visits them personally to offer them a bespoke religious service including prayers and blessings. We are also fortunate to be able to say that Revd David will visit those at the end of life to say prayers with the family and resident if requested.

“We are proud to have embraced Religion within Stratton Court, and have found a safe way for our residents to practice their religion and enjoy religious ceremonies no matter their health so they can be emotionally fulfilled while staying at our beautiful care home.” - Linda Lloyd - CEO of Aura Care.

Reviews and thanks

Thank You from St Peter’s Church Stratton

We are extremely grateful to all who donated so generously towards the Bibles which were presented to the thirty children leaving Stratton School on 3rd July. It was a very different occasion to previous years when parents have gathered in the school hall to nostalgically watch videos and presentations of their children’s progression from Reception to Class Six and to hear all about recent trips to London and other exciting end of year activities.

Sadly, COVID-19 regulations meant all had to change. Everything was held on the playing field and luckily, despite it being overcast and breezy, it remained dry. The leavers arrived and sat in their two separate “bubbles” to hear Rector David wish them well in their new schools. With cross infection concerns preventing the usual presentation of the Bibles each child then came up to a table to collect their own individual copy.

The other two classes in school, Reception and Year One, then formed a guard of honour (see photo) and clapped the leavers as they walked through and under a balloon decked archway to the playground where their parents had just arrived. It was then time for the children to perform a short song and dance routine before sadly taking their leave of Stratton School.

We are all extremely grateful to the Head and staff who have worked so hard over the past four months to cater for the children of key workers, to provide home schooling and to organise the safe return of certain year groups. We do hope they can manage to take time to rest and recuperate before facing the demands of the start of an uncertain academic year in September. It seems almost certain that school assemblies will not be taking place in the immediate future. So, Open the Book will not be happening for a while in its usual format. However, we are hoping and praying that perhaps we can find other ways to continue telling God’s story. Gill Keen (Stratton Open the Book Team)

Bagendon: Harvest celebration plans

Due to the current conditions, sadly it will not be possible to hold the traditional Harvest Lunch this year. However, in order to maintain this annual village fixture, weather permitting it is planned to hold a “Bring Your Own Picnic” in the churchyard at St Margaret’s at 12.30pm on Saturday 26th September. Please put the date in your diary and be sure to join us at this happy gathering!

Alison Saunders.

Rendcomb round-up - Ruth Edy In July Rendcomb church was open for an hour on Tuesday and Friday mornings for private prayer.

The only service during the month was Colin Burden’s funeral - held on Monday 6th July. Colin was a Rendcomb College man through and through. He came to the College in 1963 to teach PE and woodwork, (when Bob Edy was a 14-year-old student here!) and retired in 1997. He continued to be actively involved in the Old Rendcombian Society and the Friends of Rendcomb College after his retirement.

It was so appropriate that, having returned to Rendcomb as the College Chaplain, Bob was able to conduct Colin’s funeral and interment at Rendcomb Church, fifty-seven years after their first acquaintance.

On Tuesday 7th July, visitors to church included a local resident interested in finding out more about her family who used to live in the village. Her grandmother had been christened in the church on 7th July 1878, one hundred and forty-two years before to the day! Carol Bailey, the Church Warden who was overseeing the opening of the church, also noted that it was almost 28 years to the day that her sister had died and been buried in the churchyard. It is remarkable how a parish church holds the strands of so many people’s lives over many years and centuries.

There will be a united Benefice service in Rendcomb on the fifth Sunday in August - August 30th. Then, on the fourth Sunday in September - September 27th - a Harvest Thanksgiving service is planned at St Peter’s.

Coberley: The Secret Life of a Church Organ! By Michael Dykes - Church Warden St Giles, Coberley

Singing is an important part of Christian worship and the organ provides wonderful accompaniment. Music has a way of enabling the deep parts of the soul to respond lovingly to God and helps to unite the congregation. It is also a concise expression of what we believe. In order for all this to happen there comes a time each year when the organ needs to be given the equivalent of a car MOT!

This annual maintenance at the parish church of St Giles in Coberley was recently undertaken by church organ specialist Mr Ross Daly, who also services the organ at the parish church of St Mary, Cowley. In previous years Mrs Marie Owen has been on site to provide access and

Page 13: Parish Link - churnvalley.org.uk · MUSIC LESSONS Piano, Oboe, Recorder, Theory & History of Music Coronavirus update May 2020 Lessons can only be offered online. Please enquire by

Parish Link – August/September 2020 ….13

assistance where required. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to isolate prevented Marie from assisting in this year’s scheduled organ service.

The pipe organ at Coberley parish church was installed by Taunton organ builder George Osmond in 1962. The organ’s speaking pipes are located behind facade pipes which are positioned at the West end of the church. The console is detached from the pipes and sits in the left-hand side of the chancel.

In any organ, the mechanism that converts the player’s pressing of the keys into the correct valves opening beneath the organ pipes is known as the action. In the St Giles organ, the action is of a form known as electric action, when keys and draw stops at the console are activated; a current is then passed through an electromagnet which moves a valve inside the organ thus allowing pressurised wind into the pipes.

St Giles’s organ has a single manual with 6 speaking ranks. When George Osmond installed the organ in 1962 he used existing pipework from the original 1871 organ built by H.Williams.

Organ specification:

Open Diapason 8ft Clarabella 8ft Dulciana 8ft Principal 4ft Fifteenth 2ft Mixture 2 ranks

The pedal department has: Bourdon 16ft Melodic Bourdon 16ft

Couplers: manual - Pedal. Accessories: balanced Swell pedal.

The inner workings of the church organ are hidden from view inside the Vestry ceiling. Access to them is via a tall ladder and is not for the faint hearted as there isn’t much room once inside! Very few people have seen the working components of a church organ and I hope the following pictures will be of interest.

Schools’ News

Coberley C of E Primary

It has been lovely to welcome back all the children at Coberley! Children

are remarkably adaptable, and school has resumed calmly and happily.

The Year 6 are eagerly preparing

for their transition to secondary

schools and will be embarking to

schools including Dean Close,

Kingshill, Sir Thomas Rich’s, Pates

and Balcarras. They have also

filmed the Jungle Book

instalments which “go live” to the school each week on Google Classroom.

Filming, rather than a stage show, has enabled the children to think

carefully about location, action shots and perfecting dance routines.

As we prepare for September, we

are excited about a new and

innovative way of learning,

combining technology, including

Due to COVID-19, sadly Year 6 at Stratton School were unable to go on

their traditional end of Year/end of primary School residential trip to

London. However, to try to make up for this in some way, their teachers

arranged a ‘virtual’ residential trip for the Class instead! Below are some

excerpts from a Newsletter the class put together describing what they

did and their ‘virtual’ experiences. We hope you enjoy their reports.

‘Tube Map Hunt’ – by Charlotte and Heidi

For this challenge we had to pair up and

collect our sheets for the hunt. We had a

map of all the tube stations around London

(which were signs with a tube station written

on it hidden around the school outside) and a

clue sheet. There were specific clues for the

station, the first team to get all of them right won. We also had to write

the location where we found them in the school grounds. All of the

stations were scattered around the school, some on slides and some even

on trees. We were all running around like

Parish Link – August/September 2020 ….16

crazy trying to match the right clue with the right tube station. In the

end Charlotte and Heidi won, Seth and Rowan were the runners up.

Watching ‘Wind in the Willows’ – by Ruby H and Grace Saunders

On Monday we watched a fantastic, entertaining

musical - Wind in the Willows. We watched it

with popcorn (sweet and original flavoured). Our

favourite part was when Toad had to escape the

prison as a woman. It was very funny! It felt like

we were in the real London theatre, maybe even

better! In the end it turned out to be an amazing

musical. We could watch it over and over again and we very much

recommend it!

‘A virtual tour of Westminster Abbey’ – by Fred and Jack H.

We went on a virtual tour around Westminster Abbey. The lady who

showed us around was called Laura. She told us a lot about the history of

the Abbey. There were some amazing facts, like in the war a bomb went

off next to the Abbey and it damaged the wall. Laura said that the

Knights of Bath only had a bath when they were knighted. This meant it

was only once a year! In the entrance there is a grave for the unknown

Warrior. This was an unknown soldier from WW1.

‘Prime Minister’s Question Time with Boris Johnson, Dominic Cummins

and Gavinson Williamson’

At the start of the question time we asked if he was really in hospital?

Answer: yes

After that we asked if he was stressed in

lockdown?

Answer: yes, I was because a lot of people were

breaking the rules.

With the next question, we asked:

What is your favourite movie out of Frozen or

Avengers Endgame?

Answer: Definitely not Frozen, especially the

second one.

For the next question we asked if he was smart?

Answer: Yes, some people say I am.

After that weird answer we asked: When was he born?

Answer: 19th June 1964.

Garden Party – by Evie and Lola

On Thursday 2nd of July, Year 6 had a Garden

party. The day included games, delicious food,

mocktails, music and hilarious dancing. The

bartenders - Evie, Sam, Jack H and Seth - had

loads of fun making mocktails including: Pina

Coladas, Mojitos, Watermelon Coolers, Peach

Coolers, Bloody Marys and Cotton Candy

Refreshers. As well as mocktails we also had

some delicious food: sandwiches, cake etc. The

music was great, and the games were so fun. Overall, it was an amazing

experience and we will always remember it. It was a great way to end Year

6!

Shoe Boxes again - for Christmas!

As noted in the July edition of Parish Link, I am keen to organise this again, following the success of this venture last year (25 shoe boxes filled). This year the contents can be more flexible and many of the boxes will be donated to Signpost in Cirencester for the benefit of local disadvantaged children. If you would like to fill a shoe box (decorated in Christmas paper but not wrapped in paper because I will need to check the contents), then please label the outside with the age range. I will leave it up to you to decide which age range you would like to buy for - from baby up to say 14 years.

Please do not include promotional items or anything related to violence (toy guns etc.) but please do include: toiletries; socks; under-pants; sweets; crayons; books (age appropriate); felt-tips; a small toy; gloves; crafts; woolly hat and scarf, etc. I will leave it to your discretion. If we could make the cut-off date 30th November that should give me time to process the boxes. Alternatively, if you feel unable to fill a box, please feel free to share with someone else or, if that is still a burden, a £5 donation in lieu will be very helpful. If you would like any further information, please do contact me. Thank you.

Citizens Advice - telephone scams

How you can protect yourself and others

As lockdown measures around the world ease, National Trading Standards are predicting a sharp rise in scam telephone calls in the coming weeks. Fraudsters are likely to exploit coronavirus fears and prey on vulnerable and older people self-isolating at home.

Stroud and Cotswold Citizens Advice has the following advice to help you protect yourself and the people that you care for. We know that many people are concerned about relatives and friends who are not seeing people in person on a regular basis.

1. You can register your landline with the Telephone Preference Service. It’s free to register and doing so will reduce the amount of unwanted sales and marketing calls you receive. It won’t block all unwanted calls (it won’t work on calls from abroad or companies you have already given your number to) so you will need to remain vigilant, but it’ll certainly lessen the number received. You can register another person’s number if they give you permission.

2. Talk to your phone provider to see what privacy services and call-blocking services are available. These services aren’t always free but are useful in ensuring any call coming through is from a trusted or known source. You could suggest that people you look after do the same.

3. Make sure you know how to spot the marks of a scam and let others know about them too. At Citizens Advice we always advise the following:

● Be suspicious if you’re contacted out of the blue, even if it’s from a name you recognise

● If it sounds too good to be true it probably is ● Never give out your bank details unless you are certain you can trust

the person contacting you ● Don’t be rushed - you never need to make a decision straight away

and if you feel pressured say “no”, hang up the phone, or close the door.

If someone you know receives care from the local authority and you think they might be being scammed, it’s worth reporting your concerns to the Adult Safeguarding team.

Winstone and District’s WI and other news

We've been so lucky to have had some wonderful weather in mid-summer, and on two occasions our President has been able to welcome a small group of six of our members to meet up in her garden and head off for a suitably distanced walk. We've been keeping in touch more widely by Zoom conference calls - catching up with each other’s news, sharing ideas and keeping each other smiling. There's been an active plant exchange going on too to invigorate our gardens; plants being left on doorsteps or on walls for collection.

At the time of writing (mid-July) we are tentatively hopeful that we can meet again in person on Tuesday 11th August, so fingers crossed! With all the necessary safety measures in place, and following the current guidelines, we will be welcoming Di Whitaker to talk to us on the Mitford family.

Visitors will be welcome (£4.50) but, to ensure we stay within the numbers allowed in the Village Hall at the moment (and in case the guidelines have changed), please contact our Secretary, Chris, beforehand on: 01285 821861.

Winstone Village Hall is open again and available for hire. For the time being, however, the maximum capacity is 20 people. Hirers will be asked to agree to special conditions while the country is in Phase 3 of lockdown, and these will be available when a booking is made. The hall has been deep cleaned and every effort made to create a safe space for the community. Enquiries or bookings can be made with Joan Nie on: 01285 821574.

A Short Story - by Gill Clark

The Houseboat

Naomi was wearing a long white robe which was extremely dirty and carried a ring of mud about eight inches from the bottom like a Plimsoll line. Her skin is very tanned from being too long in the sunlight because she can’t stand the smell down below. “Stale fish and poo”, that’s what it smells like she complained to her husband. Naomi wears her hair long and ties it back. It has lost most of its rich red colour due to the effects of the sun and age and now it looks pink in the sunlight. Her feet are sore, and the skin is flaky from spending too much time in the water. The scar on her leg flares up from time to time reminding her of her guilty secret, which is why she prefers to wear the long robe. Her mouth used to be her most attractive feature but now it turns down at the edges from the struggles of the last year.

She used to be overweight, but weight loss has been the only benefit from their straightened circumstances and now her flesh hangs limply as she has nowhere to exercise and tone. Naomi did not speak to her husband for two days when he absentmindedly used her chins for counting when he ran out of fingers.

She knew that her husband, Noah, was basically a good man, well, he had to be to, being chosen by God but she did wonder at him sometimes. “Blasted animals,” she thought. “Two of everything he’d brought. He really doesn’t think things through. We had two bloomin’ rabbits when we started and now there are more than a hundred of the little beggars down there”. And there would have been more if she hadn’t opened the door of their cage for a couple of hours one afternoon and given the lions a welcome change from fish. If she’d had her way she’d have opened all the doors and they could have finished up with just a couple of elephants and a handful of lions. At least Noah and the boys wouldn’t have had to spend all their time fishing. She hardly saw anything of them, morning noon and night they had a rod in their hand. “Fish, what sort of diet was that for a healthy lion”, she thought. Naomi likes lions, at a distance that is.

She remembers her childhood home on the banks of the Euphrates. The sun shone most of the time and it could be hot and dusty. Dust, she hadn’t seen any for the last year. What she’d give for a layer of dust now.

She remembers how she used to lie under the fig trees enjoying their shade and eating the figs. Rows of white houses with tiny windows lined the street and the shoppers, merchants and market vendors would create a cacophony of sound, a mixture of laughter, honking camels and rolling carts: the orchestra of the bazaar.

Naomi is feeling much more optimistic today. Noah sent out a dove yesterday and today it came back with an olive branch. She’d love to have an olive and rub its oil into her skin. She fantasises about lettuce and tomatoes. Who would have thought it but more than ten months out of sight of land and scurvy is a real risk. Lucky she’d packed all those figs. As soon as they could park this ruddy boat she was going on to dry land and would never go aboard again.

Naomi goes down the ladder carefully. It isn’t easy climbing down in thonged sandals. It’s her job to feed the smaller animals and birds; chickens, pigeons, rabbits, hares and the like. She enjoys feeding them once she’s got used to the smell down below. She chooses to go down in the afternoon when the sun shines brightly through the portholes. She reaches out to break the beam and sees the shadow of her hand cast across the floor. She makes the shapes of the animals she is about to feed with her fingers, the rabbits and the birds before walking leisurely to the barrel of corn and burying her hands deep feeling the corn run between her fingers. It never seems to run out she thinks to herself.

She brings her hands together and scoops out a handful of corn, which she feeds to the chickens before repeating the process for the other birds. Then she moves to the next barrel and removes the lid and scoops out a handful of pellets for the rabbits and the hares. She marvels at how little their food changes from going in one end and out the other and wonders if they digest anything at all. It even smells the same. She wishes the other animals could be as considerate.

Later she is dutifully standing on deck looking for a sign. Noah said that God said there’d be a sign. She had absolutely no idea what she was looking for, but Noah had to get back to his fishing. Suddenly the sun shone through the rain and she saw a brightly coloured arc stretched across the sky. “I wonder if that’s it,” she thought, and she called Noah who came running over.

“The flood is over. That’s the sign!” he said, falling to his knees and praising God.

“He does go a bit overboard these days”, she thought indulgently. “Well, yes, excellent”, she replied. “Let’s go home now. I’m fed up

with messing about in boats”. Ham, her youngest, he’s very dark, takes after her father’s side of

the family, suddenly shouts, “Land ahoy”, and sure enough there’s the top of a mountain coming into view.

“That looks like Ararat,” she thought. “This time last year we were all the way over to Portugal, and this year it looks like we’re just up the road from where we started. Small world. Trouble is, they are going to have to let the animals out in the next couple of days and then my guilty secret will be out”. You see, when they were herding all the animals on board, a big brute of a unicorn gored her leg, so she tipped both of them off. She knows Noah won’t be too pleased. He liked unicorns.

With thanks to Gill Clark for sharing this with us.

Recipe

Kir Royale

A classic French sparkling cocktail or aperitif drink –

ideal for the summer months

Ingredients:

1 tbsp crème de cassis

chilled champagne or sparkling wine

1 or 2 fresh or frozen blackberries

Preparation:

Pour crème de cassis into the bottom of a champagne flute

Top with chilled champagne or sparkling wine

Garnish with one or two fresh or frozen blackberries. Serve immediately

The inspiration for including this recipe in the magazine was an article sent in by Ben Woods, which appeared in the Church Times (15.12.19). Written by Fergus Butler-Gallie it was entitled: ‘Vive la résistance cléricale!’ In the article the author describes how, in the early stages of researching his book ‘Priests de la Résistance!’, he came across a man called Felix Kir: ‘a priest, Resistance fighter, and master of the dramatic act’. Below is an extract from the Church Times article, which reveals the origins of the naming of the now well-known French beverage!

‘When Dijon was liberated from Nazi forces in September 1944, the figure at the head of the procession into the city was not a general, but a canon of the diocese. Squatting squarely on the front of the first Allied tank was a figure in a black cassock and beret who had, for the previous four years, made life a misery for the occupiers.

Kir, who was in his sixties by the time war broke out, had simply wandered into the town hall at Dijon after the city’s democratically elected mayor

had fled in the wake of the Nazi advance. There he plonked himself behind a desk and awaited the invading troops. When a German colonel came in and demanded his surrender, Kir studiously ignored him until the soldier managed to elicit a

demand from him; Dijon was, the bullfrog-like cleric said, a city of the first order, and so he would not surrender it to anyone under the rank of a general.

This episode set the tone for Kir’s war. From liberating thousands of prisoners from the Longvic concentration camp (saying that he needed them for “infrastructure projects” - which, of course, he had no right to commission), to tricking the Nazis into saving the synagogue in Dijon by suggesting it as their main military store, taking care to remove the religious artefacts beforehand (which he personally hid and then returned to the congregation’s rabbi after the war), Kir made it his mission to be as stubbornly difficult as possible.

His bravado had two sources: one, the monumental amounts of crème de cassis and white wine which he consumed every day; and, two, his deep and earnest faith in the supremacy of Christ over all things. His resistance activities caused him to make some unlikely allies. The local Communist resistance were in awe of him but could not work out

how it was that he believed in a God whom he could not see, even going so far as to challenge him about his belief. “Well,” Kir replied, “we can’t see my arse, and yet we know that exists.”

Such relationships were to serve him well when the Gestapo arranged for a hit squad to visit him one evening, and, in typical Pooh-like fashion, he was fixing an evening snack. Kir was shot several times, but, before his would-be assassins could administer the final coup de grâce, he heaved himself up and, like the soldiers at the resurrection, the Fascists fled in fright.

Resistance members spirited him away to recover until his triumphal entry, on liberation, a few months later. After the war, he remained Mayor of Dijon, continuing his consumption of blanc de cassis to such an extent that it soon became known as a “Kir”.’

News from our NHS Trust - Anne Davies

A recent highlight was that the Trust had the privilege of hosting the

Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, on behalf of the

Gloucestershire NHS and social care system. Sixteen staff, clinical and

non-clinical, from a wide range of front line and support services joined in

the visit, sharing their personal experiences of working during the COVID

pandemic. They received thanks from the Royal couple to share with

colleagues throughout the county.

Another Trust highlight was that our Chief Digital and Information Officer

was nominated for a Health and Tech Newspaper award. Coming into a

Trust that was way behind with digital technology he has, in the title of his

presentation, taken the Trust ‘From Laggard to Leader’. Much of this work

accelerated throughout the Trust during the peak of the COVID pandemic

period and many of the solutions delivered for it during that time will

remain in place, and indeed be expanded bringing increasing benefits to

the Trust and patients.

The month also saw the celebration of the 72nd birthday of the NHS and

you can see more of the Trust celebrations, including the amazing light

displays at both hospitals, on the Trust’s twitter page. There have been

national celebration days for registered nurses and midwives but not for

Health Care assistants whose work has shone through even more

brightly during recent times. The Trust wanted to celebrate their

contribution also and did so with a filled day of thanks and goodies,

culminating in the lighting up of the Pillars at CGH in “HCA green”!

After the death of George Floyd and its aftermath, including the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement, more than 50 BAME and non-BAME colleagues joined members of the Board for a “virtual” conversation. Staff wellbeing is so important, and the Board wanted to hear more about the impact of these recent events and specifically to understand, from their perspective, what actions they would like the Trust to consider. Everyone spoke openly and concerns arose that had previously not been expressed. I sit on the Equality Diversion and Inclusion Steering Group and what was learnt during that session will be pivotal in shaping early priorities. A BAME Speak up Guardian, has already been appointed.

The temporary changes put into place in preparation for a possible second surge of COVID are now working and the concerns governors had about necessary patient transfer between hospitals have been completely allayed. The firm to whom the contract was awarded are incredibly good and getting feedback such as: ‘They have been amazing and treated patients with such care and compassion, nothing was too much trouble,’ and: ‘the crews have been nothing short of phenomenal ensuring all patients are safely transferred.’

Since the changes, there have been no cases of COVID-19 infection contracted by patients whilst in hospital, good evidence that the risk of in-hospital infection is extremely low. Services paused or reduced during the

phase one of the pandemic continue to ramp up but what is being experienced in the Trust (and nationwide) is the number of patients who are declining offers of care and citing concern about contracting the virus if they come to hospital. As governors we have been asked to spread the word that our services are safe, and to encourage people to come to appointments. Please can you help in this.

Finally, planning applications for the site developments at both hospitals

have been submitted to Gloucestershire and Cheltenham Councils. This

is part of the Trust’s investment of £39.5m to improve the estate and

support the transformation of services.

Service arrangements for August and September

We continue to look forward and plan for the future of our churches, but we are led by the spread or containment of the Coronavirus and the government and church advice that goes with it. It is impossible to plan service provision as far forward as September because we simply don’t know what the situation will be.

Our plan is to gradually add to the services we are offering in our churches during the Autumn, but things will look different from all we had in place back in those pre-COVID days of the Spring. Social distancing, clergy availability, finances, government, and Diocesan instructions are some of the factors that will influence our decision making.

The published services for August are correct subject to outside influences, but we will do our best to keep you informed about our September plans on our website www.churnvalley.org or through our weekly Clergy Update. If you would like this emailed to you then please let us know: [email protected] or [email protected]
