REFLECTIONS FROM MSGR. ART

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

If there is any prayer that could be called the model Christian prayer, it would surely be the Our Father. We call it the Lord's Prayer, because it was given by Jesus to the disciples when they asked him to teach them how to pray.

This is a prayer that has been used by Christians ever since, often several times a day. Early Christian writ-ers speak of praying the Lord's Prayer every morning, at midday and every night. It has been the constant companion of Christians for two thousand years.

Since the early centuries of the Church's history, this prayer has also been used as part of our immediate preparation for receiving Communion. There are several aspects of the prayer that make it particularly ap-propriate for this part of the Mass.

First, of course, is the fact that this prayer prays for our daily bread. While this means more than just the Eucharist, it naturally calls to mind the Lord's gift of his body and blood as our food and drink. Second, it speaks of the forgiveness that enables the community to be reconciled with one another just as we are rec-onciled with God. Third, this prayer is addressed to Our Father, reminding us that we are one family in Christ as we come to share at the table of the Lord.

When this prayer first became part of the Mass, it was commonly said after the breaking of the bread. Near the beginning of the seventh century, Pope St. Gregory the Great moved it to its current position because he saw it as closely linked to the Eucharistic Prayer. It echoes the concerns of the Eucharistic Prayer that God be praised, that God's kingdom might come, and that God's will be done on earth as in heaven. Making this prayer our own can be a way of expressing some of the implications of our Amen to the Eucharistic Prayer.

Some people have become accustomed to holding hands during this prayer to express our unity. Others have learned to raise their hands in prayer. Neither gesture is prescribed in the official books, nor is either forbidden. Perhaps one of these locally developing trends will lead someday to a formal rubric in the liturgy.

The final petition of the prayer has long been expanded to ask for peace. This expansion, called the embo-lism, is followed by the acclamation “For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours ...” The Byzantine Rite, one of the Eastern rites of the Church, normally concludes the Lord's Prayer with this acclamation, as do many of our brothers and sisters in other Christian churches. It seems to have been added to the prayer originally so that it would end on a more positive note than “deliver us from evil.”

We say this prayer so often that it is good for us now and then to make a conscious effort to think about what we are saying. It is a prayer that challenges us to work for the things we pray for—to remember that we are one family, to make God's name holy, to work for the kingdom, to do God's will, to share our daily bread, to forgive as we are forgiven and to struggle against evil. It is a good prayer to pray several times a day.

Do you have time on your hands and are you looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity? Why not volunteer in the Parish Office? Are you bilingual? There is a need for volunteers in the afternoon but our main need is in the evening between the hours of 5pm and 8:30pm, Monday thru Friday, in the Parish Office. We are looking for several volunteers, then only a one or two day commitment would be necessary. The individual needs to be bilingual and able to assist parishioners with Mass cards and answer phones and questions as they arise in the Pastoral Center. Make it a Priority in your Family!!! Five Year Olds through 8th Grade Religious education is important for children because that is where they first make connections between the Catholic faith and their identity as people called to our faith. It is where they first begin to understand what it means to belong to a community of believers. The Catholic Church believes that parents are the primary religious educators of their children and that the role of the parish is to assist them. Therefore, you are invited to enroll your child/children into one of our wonderful Mission Basilica pro-grams for this school year. We are accepting registrations right now.

Religious Education classes are held on Sunday from 10:30 AM- 12 noon for grades Pre-K-5th; or Monday from 5:30 - 7:00 PM for grades K-8.

The heart of our program is the dedication of our catechists and their willingness to share their faith with our chil-dren. For our program to function, we need catechists and volunteers each week! We are very grateful to the won-derful catechists and volunteers who have already signed up for the fall! There are catechist opportunities for K grade through Eight grade classes. Training is provided for this ministry, which is open to any Catholic who has been confirmed, is actively practicing his or her faith, and is in good standing with the Church. Classes are Mondays, 5:30 PM, and Sundays, 10:30 AM. Please prayerfully consider joining us in this very im-portant teaching ministry. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY The Outreach Ministry would like to invite you to join the VITA Team! This Outreach Event requires a 2-3 hour commitment during tax season, one day a week. HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS THE HEART OF HOSPICE

Hospice of Saddleback Valley, a department of Saddleback Memorial Medical Center is looking for people with caring hearts as volunteers who can provide up to 4 hours a week of support to terminally ill patients and their families (friendly visitor, errands, caregiver relief, or office assis-tance) The free training program will begin on September 26th. As the eighty-sixth MBS school year quickly approaches, Monsignor Michael McKiernan and MBS Principal Alycia Beresford are planning for the future. WANTED: DISMISSAL LEADERS

FOR CHILDREN PREPARING FOR

BAPTISM

Would you like to help our unbaptized children meet Jesus Christ in the Gospel stories? Would you like to help them “break open the word" and learn how to follow Jesus as a disciple? Do you love teaching children or teens about Jesus? There are several ministry opportunities open to “break open” the Sunday gospel readings with our children (catechumens) who are prepar-ing for baptism, confirmation and Eucharist. This is a ministry within the RCIA process. Right now, this year, we have a group of catechumens between the ages of 8 and 17 who are preparing for their baptism, confirmation and Eucharist. On Sunday morning, starting in September, they attend the 9:00 AM mass. After liturgy of the word, they are dismissed from the Sunday assem-bly to “break open” the gospel. This means that the catechumens continue in prayer and reflec-tion on the gospel until the end of Mass in one of the rooms in the Pastoral Center. A “dismissal leader” facilitates the group in reflecting on and understanding the message given in the gospel story about Jesus. Requirements: You must have completed all the sacraments of initiation (baptism, confirmation and eucharist), be regis-tered in the parish, and have completed the safe environment online training and fingerprinting requirements. Minimal time commitment: ONE SUNDAY A MONTH FOR 30 MINUTES from September 2014 through May 2015. All support materials are available for you and you will be fully trained to take on this task. MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA: Como cada domingo, también hoy, se nos hace a NOSOTROS una pro-puesta, como en otro tiempo Jesús la realizó al grupo de seguidores: “¿Quién dice la gente que soy yo?”. Y la verdad es que es la pregunta bási-ca de nuestra fe cristiana. Una vez más, Pedro se nos convierte en todo un SÍMBOLO: hace unos días se hundía en las aguas, sumido en la duda, y se agarraba a la mano de Jesús. Hoy, en cambio, Pedro no se equivoca y Jesús lo llama “dichoso”, le felicita y es que ha recibido el don del Padre. Desde ahí sur-ge la promesa de que “sobre esta piedra edificaré mi Iglesia”. Para Pedro fue la pregunta básica de su fe. También para nosotros: no se trata de responder “lo aprendido”, “lo que hemos oído”. Más bien, es algo que afecta a lo ÍNTIMO, al convencimiento y al CORAZÓN de la persona. Sólo ahí es posible des-cubrir a Jesús como el enviado de Dios; y como consecuencia, sólo ahí, en Él, es posible fundamentar nues-tra fe. Para Pedro fue una respuesta comprometida: vinculó a ella su vida y su muerte; aquella respuesta marcó para siempre toda su vida. ¿Qué ocurre con NOSOTROS? ¿Cuál es nuestra respuesta? ¿Afecta a la vida y la “complica”? ¿O me conformo... “con lo de siempre”? “¿Para qué complicarme la vida...?”. ¡Dichosos quienes RESPONDEN A LA PRE GUNTA de Jesús!

REFLEXIONES DE MONS. ARTURO

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,

Si hubiese una oración que se pudiese llamar el modelo de la oración Cristiana, definitivamente seria El Padre Nuestro. Le llamamos la Oración del Señor, porque fue dada a los discípulos por Jesús cuando ellos le pidieron que les enseñara a orar. Esta es una oración que ha sido rezada por los cristianos desde ese entonces, varias veces al día. Los primero escribas Cristianos hablan de rezar la Oración del Señor cada mañana, al medio día y cada noche. Ha sido el compañe-ro constante de los cristianos por más de dos mil años. Desde los primeros siglos de la historia de la iglesia, esta oración ha sido utilizada como parte de nuestra preparación inmediata para recibir la Comunión. Hay varios aspectos de la oración que la hacen particularmente apropiada para esta parte de la misa.

En primer lugar, es el hecho mismo de que en esta oración se ora por nuestro pan de cada día. Si bien, esto significa más que sólo la Eucaristía, como es natural, trae a la mente el don del Señor que es su cuerpo y su sangre como nuestro alimento y bebida. En segundo lugar, habla del perdón, que permite que la comunidad se reconcilie el uno con el otro tal como hemos sido reconciliados nosotros con Dios. En tercer lugar, esta oración se dirige a nues-tro Padre, lo que nos recuerda que somos una familia en Cristo, como al venir y compartir en la mesa del Señor.

Cuando esta oración se convirtió en parte de la Misa, se decía comúnmente después de la fracción del pan. Al principio del séptimo siglo, el Papa san Gregorio el Grande lo trasladó a su actual posición, porque vio el vínculo tan estrecho con la Plegaria Eucarística. Hace eco a la Plegaria Eucarística, a necesidad de que Dios sea alabado, de que el reino de Dios puede venir y de que se haga la voluntad de Dios en la tierra como en el cielo. Al hacer esta oración propia puede ser una manera de expresar algunas de las implicaciones de nuestro amén de la Plegaria Eucarística.

Algunas personas se han acostumbrado a tomarse de las manos durante la oración para expresar nuestra uni-dad. Otros han aprendido a levantar sus manos en oración. Ninguno de estos gestos están prescritos en los libros oficiales, ni tampoco están prohibidos. Quizás algunas de estas comunes algún día llegaran a ser parte de la rúbrica formal de la liturgia.

La petición final de esta oración ha sido ampliada para pedir la paz. A esta parte se le llama la embolia y es seguida por la aclamación: "Tuyo es el reino, tuyo el poder y la gloria, por siempre Señor". El Rito Bizantino, uno de los ritos orientales de la Iglesia, normalmente concluye la Oración del Señor con esta aclamación, al igual que muchos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas de otras iglesias cristianas. Parece que se le sumo a la oración originalmente para que terminara en una forma más positiva que "líbranos del mal". Decimos esta oración tan a menudo que es bueno que de vez en cuando, hagamos un esfuerzo consciente de pensar qué es lo que estamos diciendo. Es una oración que nos impulsa a trabajar por las cosas que pedimos -recordar que somos una sola familia, hacer el nombre del Dios santo, trabajar por el reino, hacer la voluntad de Dios, compartir nuestro pan de cada día, perdonar así como nosotros somos perdonamos y luchar contra el mal. Es una muy buena oración para rezar varias veces al día.
