December 14th, 2014 — Third Sunday of Advent
From Fr. Suresh
TODAY’S READINGS: First Reading: Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11
Psalm: Luke 1:46-48, 49-50, 53-54
Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24
Gospel: John 1:6-8, 19-28
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor” - Isaiah 61:1
THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT... LET THE LIGHT OF CHRIST GUIDE OUR WAY
"There is one among you whom you do not recognize." With these words, John the Baptist was referring to his cousin,
Jesus. Although Jesus had not yet begun his public ministry, John knew that Jesus was the Messiah. And it was John's
mission to prepare other people to recognize that fact.
John and Jesus had first "met" in utero when Mary visited Elizabeth. Even from that early moment, John understood the
significance of encountering Jesus. The Gospel of Luke tells us that the baby "leaped for joy" in Elizabeth's womb when
the expectant Mary approached. Now that these two babies were grown men, John was still in the business of recogniz-
ing Jesus' significance. He describes his cousin as "the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy
to untie." John knew that Jesus was something special. And he made it his goal to lead others to the same realization.
Of course, as Christians in the twenty-first century, we already know that Jesus is the Messiah. But John's words still
raise an important question for us today: Do we recognize the real significance of Jesus? Do we take him for granted, or
do we appreciate the gift of salvation that he offers us? Today's Gospel reading tells us that John came "to testify to the
light." Do we let the light of Christ guide our way? Have we "made straight the way of the Lord" by putting Jesus first in
our lives?
Today as we light the third candle on the Advent wreath, we would do well to reflect on the true light that came down
from heaven. Let us pray, as this holy season continues, that our minds and hearts will be enlightened to grasp the true
significance of the coming of Christ.

CHRISTMAS OFFERTORY COLLECTION: DECEMBER - JANUARY
The Christmas offertory collection is part of our annual parish budget. The entire Christmas collection stays right here in
the parish. All other collections and donations during the year are assessed 7% by the Archdiocese, whereas the Christ-
mas collection is exempt from such assessment. You can make your Christmas donation to the parish anytime over the
month of December and into January, just so long as you indicate in the cheques and envelopes that it is your
“Christmas 2014 offering”. If you are going away during the holidays, please consider making your Christmas offering
to St. Ignatius Parish before you leave. Thank you!
Wishing you all a wonderful week as we rejoice on this third Sunday of Advent!
Fr. Suresh, SAC

This annual event takes place on Saturday, December 20th from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
in Loyola Hall. St. Ignatius teens and adults will be looking after children (ages 4-11)
while their parents have a break! Cost is $10 per child, including lunch! We will do
arts & crafts, singing, playground time, watch Christmas DVDs, and serve lunch.
Registration forms are available from the church office or from Jeremy Rice at the
table outside after Mass. You can also request one via [email protected]. Please
submit completed forms and payment by Thursday, December 18th, 9:00 am.
When and how long is Advent?
For most Christians, the Advent Season always begins four Sundays before Christmas;
so it is rarely four full weeks long, but only between three and four weeks, depending on what weekday Dec. 25 happens
to be in a certain year. (click here for more specifics on the calendar)
The First Sunday of Advent, which also marks the beginning of the new liturgical year for the Church, could be as early
as Nov. 27 or as late as Dec. 3.
The Third Sunday of Advent is traditionally called "Gaudete Sunday" (from Latin, meaning "Rejoice!), because the
"Entrance Antiphon" of this Sunday's Mass is taken from Paul's letter to the Philippians: "Rejoice in the Lord always;
again I say, rejoice! The Lord is near." (Phil 4:4+5b)
The Fourth Sunday of Advent could be as early as Dec. 18, a full week before Christmas (as in 2005 and 2011), or as late
as Dec. 24, making it the same day as "Christmas Eve" (as in 2006 or 2017).
Advent technically ends of the afternoon of Dec. 24, since that evening, Christmas Eve, begins the Christmas Season.
Most Eastern Orthodox and other Eastern Christian Churches have a "Nativity Fast" (now often called "Advent Fast"),
which usually lasts forty days before Christmas; it may begin on Nov. 15 (for those Churches that celebrate Christmas on
Dec. 25), or in late November (for those Churches that celebrate Christmas on Jan. 7 or 8).
What does the word "Advent" mean?
When capitalized, "Advent" usually refers to "the coming of Christ into the world" or to "the liturgical period preceding
Christmas"; it may also refer to the "Second Coming" of Christ (the "Advent of our Lord").
In secular English, "advent" (not capitalized) may refer to any "coming" or "arrival," especially of something so impor-
tant that it radically changed a whole culture (e.g., "The advent of electricity" or "The advent of the computer age").
The word is derived from the Latin adventus ("arrival, approach"), made up of the preposition ad- ("to, towards"), the
verbal root ven- (from venire, "to come"), and the suffix -tus (indicating verbal action).
The word is very similar in many other European languages: Advent, Advento, Avent, Avvento, Adviento, etc.
What are the traditional colours of Advent?
In the Roman Catholic Church, the official liturgical colour for most of the Season of Advent is violet. Only on the Third
Sunday of Advent is a rose (pink) coloured candle lit, as a symbol of joy; the priest may also wear rose vestments
on this Sunday.
Many Anglicans and some Protestant Churches use blue instead of violet throughout Advent, although they may also use
rose/pink on the Third Sunday.
Other church decorations (altar cloths, banners, etc.) will often have combinations of violet, pink, and blue throughout
the season. Liturgically-minded churches will avoid greens and reds (the secular Christmas colours), and will wait until
the Christmas season to use decorations with white, silver, and gold colours

our beloved Rev. Fr. Alex Ramos. ALL parishioners are welcome to attend!

for God loves a cheerful giver.”

PARISH FAMILY BIBLE QUIZ RESULTS
To those who participated in the Family Bible Quiz, a very big thank you. We were delighted that well over 260
questionnaires were collected by parishioners and although only 78 completed questionnaires were returned, this was a
positive indication of the interest in our Biblical Animation Parish Activity. Participants shared that it was a great
opportunity for the family to get together, search for the answers to the questions and become more familiar with the
contents of the Bible. Some comments were:
"This was fun and a great way to share Bible stories as a family. Please consider seasonal or quarterly quizzes."
"Very enjoyable. Do another one soon."
Congratulations to those who scored the highest points! Three families tied for the first prize and a drawing by lot at the
8:00 am Mass last Sunday determined the winners as follows:
1st Prize: The Westin family 2nd Prize: Matthew & Luisa Smith 3rd Prize: Nidie Eden
As the difference between the highest scores and the second set of highest scores was only a half of a point, we decided
to award consolation prizes to:
The Rayos Del Sol Family, Rogelio & Josephine Gerolao, Suzanne Howden, Jean Pereira, Adriannie Webb
We encourage everyone to continue to study and share the Scriptures as a regular family activity in order to deepen their
relationship with God and to strengthen the unity, love and peace in our families. Special thanks to Angela Miller and
O’Neil Miller for putting the quiz together, giving lots of time and talent and also to the Education Commission for
supplying some of the questions.
