Eyes Fixed

I’m hearing many stories these days of people whose eyes seem always to be fixed on the news. On TV or radio, through Internet sites or over social media, reports of developments regarding the COVID-19 coronavirus are attracting – and fixing – our attention. Difficult to pull away. Our eyes are “fixed” on every development.

More and more we hear doctors tell us we should disconnect from time to time, pull away, fix our eyes elsewhere. Good advice. We can only sustain so many traumatic reports, and it is good to focus elsewhere.

My question is about the “elsewhere.” When we avert our eyes from the news, where are we fixing our gaze? Some will speak of TV shows or a good novel, for example. I’m doing the same, I must admit. A good spy novel is a wonderful and distracting refuge.

I want to suggest another object of our focus, somewhere else to which we need to turn our gaze and “fix our eyes,” especially now. Let’s deliberately “fix our eyes” on Jesus. This admonition is far from original. It arises out of Sacred Scripture itself.

Consider when Jesus first preached in his hometown synagogue at Nazareth. As he preached, we are told, the eyes of everyone present were “fixed on him” (Luke 4:20) Something about his person, and the authority with which he spoke, clearly gripped them and they could not take their eyes off of him. The salvific importance of keeping one’s eyes fixed on the Lord was later demonstrated dramatically when Jesus walked across the water towards his disciples in peril on the storm-tossed lake (cf. Matthew 14: 22-33). As long as Peter, who had heeded the Lord’s call to step out of the boat, kept his eyes on Jesus, he could walk across the choppy waters safely; as soon as looked instead upon the peril he began to sink. From these episodes we can appreciate why we are told in the Letter to the Hebrews to keep our eyes fixed on the Lord. Jesus is “the pioneer and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2) Gazing upon Jesus, and especially upon him crucified, we see the One who is the gift of the Father to the world. If the Father would give His only Son, then there is no other good gift he will refuse us (cf. Romans 8:31-39). We also see him, who trusted completely in this love of the Father, and summoned all of us to do the same (cf. Matthew 6:25-34)

Fixing our eyes on the news can easily give rise to foreboding and fear. Fixing our eyes on Jesus renews and strengthens our faith. And faith is what we really need to exercise right now.

Now, of course, I am not counselling anyone not to watch the news. We must be informed. What I would like to offer is a little suggestion. Consider placing a crucifix near the TV, radio, or computer – near, that is, wherever we are getting our news. This will enable us, as we listen to the news source, to keep on eyes fixed on Jesus. Our crucified Lord is the supreme sign of the love of God, and of his determination to enter into the fear, anxiety and suffering of his people in order to rescue us.

Eyes fixed on the Lord. He will accompany and lead us through any and every difficulty.

We pray for . . . . . . those who are sick, especially Sr Dolores Ferrandiz RVM, Rosemarie Menard, Marilou Lopez & all those affected by the coronavirus. May they receive the peace & healing of the Lord. . . . the repose of the souls of those who have died, especially Helen Clancey, Florencia Malbog, Jose Dayrit, Magdalena Pineda, Cynthia Robinson & Helen Allcock. May they rejoice in the kingdom of God.

Teaching from our Holy Father The Pope, as Bishop of Rome and successor of Peter, is the visible and perpetual foundation of

unity among the bishops and among Christ's faithful. It is the Pope's role as Vicar of Christ and

Pastor of the entire Church to guide the community of Christ's faithful, to safeguard them in the

truth, and to confirm his brothers and sisters in the faith.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Twenty-five years ago today, on the solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, Saint John Paul II issued his Encyclical Evangelium Vitae on the value and inviolability of human life. The Gospel of life lies at the heart of Christ’s message, and resonates in a particular way in the current context of a pandemic that threatens the human family. With gratitude I call to mind the quiet witness of the many people who today are doing all they can to help the sick, elderly, poor and lonely. They are putting the Gospel of life into practice, like Mary who accepted the angel’s message and then went to visit her elderly kinswoman Elizabeth. The life we are asked to promote and protect is no abstract idea, but becomes real flesh and blood in the unborn child, the terminally ill, the refugee and the outcast. The Church feels in the depths of her heart every threat to human life, for each person is unique and unrepeatable, in need of solidarity and fraternal love. Today, I renew the appeal made by Saint John Paul II, to “respect, protect, love and serve life, every human life! Only in this way will you find justice, development, freedom, peace and happiness!” (Evangelium Vitae, 5).

General Audience held at Library of the Apostolic Palace, Wednesday, 25 March 2020: http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/audiences/2020/documents/papa-francesco_20200325_udienza-generale.html

Respect for Life . . . We pray that we, who believe in Jesus, the Resurrection, and the Life, may defend life and help bring an end to abortion and other forms of injustice.

Jesus called to his friend from the dead, “Lazarus, come out!” It is the same call our Lord makes to us unceasingly: “Come out!” Jesus calls us from our tomb of doubt and unbelief, from the darkness of our fear and anxieties; from the depths of our weaknesses and lack of hope. Christian stewards pray for an open heart

so that they may hear the voice of the Lord, heed the continuous call to come away from their former way of living and reprioritize their lives in the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Do we believe Christ has the power to transform our lives? Do we take time to listen for his call?

Some advice from the Office of Divine Worship:

When we are unable to receive Holy Communion, we can make a Spiritual Communion as we view a televised or online Mass. This is a prayer in which we ask our Lord to come to us in the same way He would if we were able to receive the Sacrament:

Dear Parishioners of Corpus Christi,

"All weekend and weekday masses in the Archdiocese of Edmonton are cancelled until further notice. For the duration of this period, I grant to all the Catholic faithful dispensation from their Sunday obligation. Since the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist is the very heart of our Catholic life, the inability to gather for this worship is a cause of great suffering. Let us accept this as our civic duty at this time, and offer this moment in sacrifice to God for the sake of all who are ill from the COVID-19 virus." —

Presently, the church remains open until 6:00 pm on weekdays, with Adoration from 8:00 to 9:00 am. Anyone coming to the church is expected to maintain good hygiene and keep a minimum distance of two metres from others. Only a small number of people can be in the church at one time. If you are sick, please stay home.

For Reconciliation, please call the parish office to schedule.

The chapel is closed. The situation is fluid and measures could be restricted further in the coming days.

Resources are available online and you are encouraged to use them and pray from home. Please visit our website to download the Stations of the Cross and utilize the available mobile apps: Living with Christ and IBreviary.

Further, the Archbishop adds: "In these extraordinary circumstances, I encourage everyone to participate “remotely” in the celebration of the Eucharist by tuning in to daily mass on Salt+Light TV or Vision TV, or online at dailytvmass.com/daily-tv-mass. In addition, the Archdiocese will livestream Sunday mass at 10:30 am from St. Joseph’s Basilica. This can be accessed on our Archdiocesan website at caedm.ca."

In these uncertain and fearful times, let us continue to support and pray for each other. God is with us and we will get through this.

May God bless you and your families,

Rev. Joseph Vadassery, Pastor

O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope.

We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus' pain,

with steadfast faith.

You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need.

We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return

after this moment of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father's will and to do what Jesus tells us.

He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy

of the Resurrection. Amen.

We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God.

Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious

and blessed Virgin.

They cried to the Lord in their trouble,

And he saved them from their distress;

He sent out his word and healed them,

And delivered them from destruction.

Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,

For his wonderful works to humankind.

Psalm 107:19-21

Lord God,

I pray for all who have become sick or died by the coronavirus that has been spreading around the world.

In your mercy and compassion, deliver us from this disease,

In your holy wisdom, guide all who are working to contain the outbreak,

In your steadfast love, bring healing to all your children who have become sick,

Welcome into your arms the ones that died,

Comfort the ones they left behind.

In faith, I place my trust in you.

In hope, I turn to you in my time of need.

In love, I give glory to your name.

In gratitude, I will praise you with my life.

In your Son’s name I pray.

Amen.
