Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls. — James 1:21b

Celebrating over a Century of Faith and Education

St. Barbara Parish is a Roman Catholic community celebrating a century of faith in the Bridgeport area. Our faith community welcomes all people, helping them grow spiritually through liturgy, prayer, and education, and socially through activities for all ages. Our school takes great pride in fostering these values in our children. We give witness to our faith by sharing with each other our God-given gifts and talents. We nourish and sustain our faith as a family by celebrating the sacraments and the presence of the risen Lord among us in the Eucharist.

FROM THE DESK OF THE ASSOCIATE PASTOR

Dear People of St. Barbara, Every family wants their children to be smart, wise and live according to the good rules their parents set up. It is not pleasant to be called by the principal to come to school because your children did something which was not very smart. And, I think children are very proud when their parents live a good life, are intelligent and they can tell other children how smart their father or mother is. We as adults want to live in a nation that is smart, strong and intelligent. We want to have leaders who govern all nations with wisdom. So we created mil-lions of rules and regulations, millions of laws which govern all aspects of our lives. And we realize that we still are not very smart, not very intelligent, and not very wise. Today’s first reading gives us a good solution to what it means to be an intelligent nation – a nation that will be admired by the whole world. All other nations will say, “This is a great nation. It is truly a wise and intelligent people.” What is the secret? It is very simple. Moses said to the people, “Heed the statutes and decrees which the Lord, the God of your Father is giving you and observe them carefully.” Why did I say it is easy? Because God gave very simple laws which regulate our lives – the Ten Com-mandments. Ten simple words which even the most simple-minded person can memorize. If people live according to the Ten Commandments, we will not need any other laws. We don’t need thousands of lawyers. Unfortunately, we think that we can create a better law and, year after year, we go down as a nation. For example, God said, “Remember to respect the holy day. It should be a day of resting, a day with family and with God.” But, what happened? People are working, are far away from their children and, instead of going to church, they go to the modern temple – the shopping mall. God said, “You shall not kill.” It means, don’t hurt innocent people and innocent animals. What do people do? They kill animals just for killing. They kill people because they don’t like them or because they can show their power over other people. Simply, there are some people who are very powerful who have no respect for life at all. Another example. God said, “You shall not steal.” But what happened in our society? Huge monies dis-appear and no one is responsible.

I don’t want to talk about all the commandments but, take a moment at home, take the Ten Command-ments and you will say the same as I said. If people live the Ten Commandments, the world will not need prisons, police, or armies. I know that Utopia is not real but, I think, in many cases, we can try to keep God’s love and His law to be alive among us. Fr. Andrzej
