Tony Campolo, an American evangelist, gave a talk at a conference where he remarked on a sermon he had heard. The message consisted of just 5 words… 5 powerful words.. 5 words that bring hope when hope can seem so far away and the future desperate and bleak.

“It’s Friday …. but Sunday’s a-comin’.”

This quote from the early part of that famous sermon speaks to us today as though we, too, were there .. that Friday

“ It's Friday. Jesus is arrested in the garden where He was praying...... But Sunday's coming.

It's Friday. The disciples are hiding and Peter's denying that he knows the Lord..... But Sunday's coming.

It's Friday. Jesus is standing before the high priest of Israel, silent as a lamb before the slaughter.... But Sunday's coming.

It's Friday. Jesus is beaten, mocked, and spit upon. But Sunday's coming.

It's Friday. Those Roman soldiers are flogging our Lord with a leather scourge that has bits of bones and glass and metal, tearing at his flesh.... But Sunday's coming.

It's Friday. The Son of man stands firm as they press the crown of thorns into his brow...But Sunday's coming.

It's Friday. See Him walking to Calvary, the blood dripping from His body. See the cross crashing down on His back as He stumbles beneath the load.

It's Friday;....... but Sunday's a coming.

It's Friday. See those Roman soldiers driving the nails into the feet and hands of my Lord. Hear my Jesus cry, "Father, forgive them."

It's Friday;..... but Sunday's coming.

It's Friday. Jesus is hanging on the cross, bloody and dy-ing. …. But Sunday's coming. ‘

It's Friday. The sky grows dark, the earth begins to tremble, and He who knew no sin became sin for us all. The Holy God who will not abide with sin pours out His wrath on that perfect sacrificial lamb who cries out, "My God, My God. Why hast thou forsaken me?" What a horrible cry. …….. Six interactive sessions structured for small group discussion based on

The Lord’s Prayer, covering topics such as intercession, dealing with

disappointment, learning to listen and spiritual warfare.

The congregations of St. Andrews ,Diamond Harbour and Little River have now completed the short course on prayer.

Generally it has been enthusiastically received, although some found sharing in small groups a bit out of their comfort zone.

Hearing people share their thoughts and experiences of prayer has encouraged many to reassess the place prayer has in

their faith journey. The honesty of people recognising that prayer is a normal and integral part of their relationship with God

and many have discovered through this past 6 weeks that prayer is not just a short 5 minute shopping list, but a constant

communication with the God.. A short course such as this has had an impact on many people and I encourage spending time

discovering the power and wonder prayer brings in the lives of individuals and communities alike. A group continue to gather

at 8:15 am every week day in St. Andrews Diamond Harbour and the door is open to all. Also a reflective Wednesday prayer

communion is held at 9am . There is a pray and a Care and Share group in Little River. All of these groups are advertised in

this magazine. Be encouraged to join in prayer with others or discover the wonder of God quietly on your own. If this is some-

thing you would like to explore for you or with others in your community, please contact Russell on 3294876.

Wardens Report

Over the past year our Vicar Russell Pickersgill-Brown has devoted much energy into promoting the mission of this Church, with an emphasis on seeking first the com-ing of Christ’s Kingdom, out of a heart for evangelism. He has strongly promoted leadership and ownership of various roles within the congregations of the parish.…. We have both appreciated the diversity of the parish and how Russell has endeavoured to meet the different flavours of each community…

We deeply appreciate the support of the retired clergy, Bruce Beckett, Graeme Brady, Richard Roberton, Ross Fountain and Brenda Walker, along with the licensed Lay people, Vivienne Jackson, Vanessa Ross, and Gail Weaver from Governor’s Bay congregation and Fiona Waghorn from Little River. We welcome John McLister in his timely new role with the support team of Russell, Richard and Brenda. Thank you to Vivienne Jackson for her role as synod representative and to her daughter Rowena, who is our synod youth representative. We express our appreciation for Anna Pickersgill-Brown who wonderfully fulfills the role of support in many prac-tical and spiritual areas. We are also very aware of the multitude of essential ways in which many others qui-etly support each Church within the parish without whom these could not function. Thank you. Special events in the year have included the 170th anniversary of the Gospel coming to the South Island ... On a per-fect sunny day 50 people from all parts of the parish, joined with the Port Levy community to share a multi-denomination service of celebration and thankfulness. St. Cuthbert’s, Governors Bay parishioners have contin-ued to worship at St Peter’s Teddington, whilst awaiting the rebuild of their Church. The Presbyterian /Methodist services have continued on the first Sunday of each month. At Governor’s Bay, Gail and Vanessa hold the Come and See, family services on the 1st and 3rd Sun-days at 10.30 a.m. They also hold regular barbecues in the community. We especially want to mention the wonderful re-enactment held at Living Springs Farm, with an attendance of over a hundred people moving through various parts of the park with scenes of the Christmas Story. With the City Mission having moved out of the Governor’s Bay vicarage it was great to see the Lord provide new tenants in the form of a family

who desire to be there long term. Also members of the Radcliffe family are now tending the garden plot . As well as the parish gathering mentioned earlier, the Port Levy Church has seen the celebration of Easter and Christmas and it has also been used for local family events. At St. Kentigern’s in Kaituna Valley, we appreciate the great efforts of Jeanene and Bob Marchand for their strengthening of the Church community. Unfortunately through ill health they can no longer sustain this and Kaituna will recess to Easter and Christmas only. With the change of time to 5.00 pm at St Andrew’s Little River families have been more able to be involved. There is an enthusiasm for out-reach facilitated by the Discovery Program being introduced through an initiative from Tear Fund. This program helps the church congregation discover the needs of the community and how best to meet those needs. One outcome is an op shop and community drop-in centre. Thank you to Fiona and all involved.

St Peter’s Teddington meet on the third Sunday and are joined by the St Cuthbert’s congregation The Church of Epiphany, Gebbies Valley, continue to meet on the 1st Sunday of each month. Thank you Anthony and Karen for all your efforts in the Church community. St. Andrew’s, Diamond Harbour have continued with two weekly services. One is a reflective midweek ser-vice, and one on Sunday morning, which accommo-dates people from a wide variety of denominational backgrounds. Daily prayer meetings continue at 8.15 a.m. The Women’s and Men’s Breakfasts have been well attended. Thank you to Ruth Willis who resigned from organizing Women's Breakfasts after many years. Thank you Anna P-B for taking up the challenge in Ruth’s place. A prayer course has been successful in a variety of home groups and Churches. Three Bible study home groups gather weekly and there is a fort-nightly Wednesday afternoon group. A babies and tod-dlers group, with an emphasis on supporting the par-ents, is held fortnightly. A great Quiz night was held. Thank you Wendy Coles and your support crew for all your efforts. A stall at Orton Bradley Park was held and other fundraising activities throughout the whole com-munity have given positive results and are greatly ap-preciated. We give our thanks to all who were involved

in all Parish activities. Helen and Merylin

Vicars report I have included in this publication excerpts from the Vicar and Wardens reports. The full text is available on

www.mountherbertparish.wordpress.com

I wish to open this address by giving public

thanks to God for blessing this parish as He has. This

time last year we would not have considered possible

or even probable to have the opportunities to reach the

communities we live in as we have at this time....if we

were a single centred parish, instead of 7 far flung

places, we would have the following weekly services.:

A 9am liturgical service, 10:30 all age family oriented

style service, 5pm free worship or similar and a mid

week reflective, quiet style service. Nearly every single

centred parish anywhere offer these.......We offer the

same worship as single centred parishes offer except at

separated venues. And as we recognise this parish

tries to meet the spiritual needs of the communities we

are in, in local and individual ways, we begin to see our

diversity of worship is a healthy and positive expression

of church......If one of the centres somewhere in this

parish, doesn't have the style of service we desire,

surely we are not that far flung that we shouldn't drive to

a service that does, after all we are in the same parish.

.......How do I see the parish? I see a body of diverse

believers that serve God faithfully, sincerely and ex-

pressing that devotion through their individual gifts and

strengths. Some in prayer, some in action, some in ser-

vice, others in leadership, and in so many other ways.

....... and I for one am grateful for the way the parish

has remained unified within that diversity of thought and

action..... And what of the author and perfector of our

Faith? I would imagine that when this parish is seen

through Gods eyes He may very well see a body of be-

lievers struggling within what is a steadily growing secu-

lar and spiritually confused society and yet, as a

church, it is holding the integrity and hope of the gospel

before their local communities that desperately need

hope and assurance of faith........ We are not the same

parish we were 5 years ago, and we will not remain the

same parish in the next 5 years. And that should not

surprise us nor should it concern us. This is something

God began, let us be confident that He will complete it.

As we cope with that change, move with the Spirit as

He leads us, trust that God is doing exactly what He

said He would, " I will Build My church"..... Finally, I

deem it a privilege and an honour to serve this parish

for the furtherance of the Kingdom, and the sake of the

Gospel..... As we have grown together there has been

some discomfort, some disagreement, some uncer-

tainty and also joy, wonder and thanksgiving.

This is how all families are, and as we acknowledge it is

God we serve we will recognise the ups and downs are

indeed healthy signs of growth and discovery......May

the Lord continue to smile on you and those you love,

continue to bless this parish and all those we connect

with, and grow His church and may His kingdom come,

to the Glory of His name. Amen

Financial Report: The first thing I wish to do in this financial report is to

give God thanks for His faithfulness to us in the past

year and acknowledge our dependence on His good-

ness and generosity for the coming year. We thank all

those who have contributed to the financial needs of the

parish in this past year, both in direct giving but also in

the service required for fundraising events.

We started 2014 with liability for unpaid bills of $4171

and ended the year with unpaid bills outweighing cash

on hand by $7838- so having started the year in the

red, we went further into the red by $3667. and this

trend is continuing in 2015. We do not have any general

parish reserves and we are managing at present by

progressively delaying payment of our large monthly

diocesan bill Clearly this trend cannot continue.

Vestry are designating April 2015 as a Month for

special thanks and giving...... April starts with Easter,

a poignant reminder of the greatness of God's grace

and generosity to us. Please seriously consider giving a

special additional gift to the parish in April in thankful-

ness to God and in recognition of the needs of the par-

ish. During the year we opened 2 new bank accounts.

In anticipation of having a youth worker we opened a

new “everyday account”- a youth services account; and

also opened another “rapid saver” account, the “Little

River Discovery Project” account. The “Old Vicarage”,

Governor's Bay has been rented out as a residence but

to date it has not given us useful return because of nec-

essary maintenance issues. Our insurance premiums

have decreased significantly in 2014 c.f. 2013; we have

changed the electricity supplier for Port Levy, Kaituna

and Gebbies Valley to Powershop with useful savings.

In presenting a budget for 2015, it is mandatory that we

accept a budget with feasibility based on previous year

“actuals” and that it have a balance where income out-

weighs expenditure so that we may reverse the direc-

tion of increasing delay in paying our bills- a budget

based on faith and reason.

The challenge before us :

As mentioned in the January parish magazine,

“if each regular giver was able to give an extra $2

per week ($100/year) and 10 more were able to give

a one-off donation of $500 as well, we would wipe

out our current deficit and be back to a healthy

financial situation” Co-Parish Treasurer: Russell Lienert

April - a month for giving!

This year April begins with Easter - A time when we are reminded most strongly that : “God so loved the world that he gave His only son .....” As we celebrate this pivotal event in human his-tory, it is appropriate that in response to the mys-tery of suffering, love and hope bound up in the cross and empty grave, that we also make Easter and the April weeks following, a time for special thanks and giving to God.

As a parish, we are not meeting our financial needs. We started 2014 in deficit of $4071 with unpaid bills greater than cash on-hand; and during 2014 this gap increased to $7838. This was despite the fact that we were able to pay maintenance bills during 2014 from maintenance accounts held with CPT- (we withdrew $7000 more from these accounts than was deposited into them.)

Clearly that cannot continue.

Ideally we need $10000 (20x $500) as a once off gift to get us back to a healthy position; and then a lift in our regular income of $5000 yearly to maintain bal-ance between income and expenditure.

Please prayerfully consider your response to God's amazing gift to us and the needs of the parish. Could I also remind us again of the convenience to you and assurance of continuity to the parish financial regular out goings, of giving by automatic payment. Remember too, the relatively painless way to increase your church giving by donating tax credits for your charitable donations to the Parish; and a reminder that we do have a Parish TradeMe account which benefits you in clearing unwanted “stuff” and the Parish from the sale proceeds.

If you need any help with these or have other fi-nancial questions, please let Margaret Somerville (Ph. 329 4713) or myself, Russell Lienert, know. Russell Lienert, Parish Co-Treasurer. Ph 3294066.

Hanmer Springs Forest Camp 13- 17 January 2016 “YOU CAN” (John 14:11-14)

The January 2015 camp was such a success , that the camp venue has been shifted from the Alpine Adventure Holiday Park and will now be holding this inspirational event at the Hanmer Springs Forestry Camp and cordially invite all ages and stages to prayerfully consider joining us there.

Anna and I have had a 16 year connection with the organizers of such camps, recently becoming a director on E4 Summer Camp and being Vicar in the parish, I cannot speak highly enough of the unity, encouragement and equipping we, as a parish and individuals, can receive at this event.

The first year 16 people from Mount Herbert were blessed and this last year nearly the same number attended.

I would like us to treat this as a “parish camp event” and set aside a few days in January 2016 to fellowship and journey together in beautiful Hanmer Springs. There is some finance available if the cost is the stumbling block, please contact Russell and this can be sorted. We can also offer a “Lay-by” scheme where you can begin drip feeding money now instead of the struggle in December The conf. fees are approx $90 per adult, $20 per child . You source your own accommodation and meals , and we do recommend you stay on site as we have the entire camp and the site/room charge is reasonable.
