Siemens automation solution will enable the metro trains to run at higher speeds and at shorter headways and also allow the operator to match the number of vehicles in operation much more quickly to fluctuations in the number of passengers. Answers for cities.

Paris Metro’s most storied line is to be converted for

fully automated service by Siemens France.

Siemens automation solution will enable the metro

trains to run at higher speeds and at shorter headways

and also allow the operator to match the number of

vehicles in operation much more quickly to fluctuations

in the number of passengers. Vehicle deployment

will be controlled from an operations control center,

which is also to be supplied by Siemens. Besides the

operations control equipment, the company’s scope of

supply includes the components necessary along the

line and for the 49 vehicles operating on Line 1.

Metro Line 1 linking Chateau de Vincennes and La

Defense was first opened in July 1900, making it the

oldest, most heavily traveled metro line in Paris. The

route is 16.6 kilometers long and serves 25 stations.

This will be the first time that such an important line

is to be automated during ongoing metro operation –

that is, without interrupting regular passenger service.

From 2011, for the passengers travelling the line on a

daily basis, line 1 will be synonymous with:

◊ Availability thanks to the platform screen doors

which keep to a minimum the in-station perturbations

caused by objects on the track.

◊ High transport offer. At a rate of one train every 85

seconds, line 1 can carry nearly 40,000 passengers per

hour in each direction.

◊ Safety thanks to the platform screen doors which

prevent people from falling on to the track.

◊ Security thanks to onboard and in-station

audio-visual means.

◊ Speed thanks to an average commercial speed

(including the stopping times in the stations) of

40 km/h (as compared to 25 km/h on conventional

attended metro lines).
