EXTRAORDINARY MEETING – GOVERNING COUNCIL In the Resource Centre at the College: 6:00pm Monday 10 August 2020 The purpose of this meeting is to seek amendments to the Governing Council constitution to:

increase parent membership from 8 to 12

increase community membership from 2 to 3, with the intention of facilitating indigenous representation

add 2 student members, elected by students

GOVERNING COUNCIL MEMBERSHIP Governing Council is currently comprised of the following thirteen members: Parents Members: Georgie Warren (Chair), Angela Booth, Debbie Simmonds, Timothy Calvert, Abraham Shuken, Carol Lang, Karen Leckie, Rebecca Hartwell Staff Members: Andrew Glasson, Marisa Camilos, Elise Goodfellow Community Members: Anna Leombruno, Vincent Tarzia MP Ex officio: Kevin O’Neil STUDENT ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE Our teachers provide assessments and feedback regarding student work on DayMap, and parents and students are able to read this information. In addition, teachers in Years 7 to 12 recently recorded their indications of student academic performance, via traffic lights, which were then analysed by school leaders. Our Assistant Principals and Year Leaders shared this information with all students and meet with students whose performance requires attention. The feedback that I have received from students was that the traffic lights were very useful and welcomed by students, either to affirm the students’ own understanding or their academic performance, but also to alert others to areas of concern. UNIFORM High standards of personal appearance are important. Community perceptions of our school are influenced by how our

students present themselves when travelling to and from school and whilst attending special events; this includes their general behaviour and appearance. At Charles Campbell College, we believe that wearing the correct uniform plays an important part in developing and maintaining students’ pride in themselves as young people and as members of our school community. We seek the support of families to ensure that their children wear only the approved uniform and are neatly presented. Whilst already offering a number of approved uniform options for students, our staff have recently become concerned about students wearing non-compliant items of clothing. Working with our Student Leaders and Governing Council, we ensure that all uniform items are fit for purpose, comfortable and available to families at the lowest cost possible. At the suggestion of our students, we are currently reviewing the options for girls’ pants. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS The beginning of Term 3 is normally the time when the largest number of International Full-Fee Paying Students arrive in South Australia; at Charles Campbell, we would normally expect around 60 additional students to arrive. Due to COVID-19 concerns and travel restrictions, only two students will join us at the beginning of Term 3, 2020. The impact of the significantly reduced number of international students has meant that our students will miss an opportunity to welcome students from other countries into their classes and families will have a reduced opportunity to host international students. We anticipate that the number of international students attending the College will return to near-normal levels in 2021. LOCKERS Presently, a small number of students are using lockers to store their bag and belongings during the school day; most students choose to take their bag to class, leading to crowded classrooms and trip-hazards. The College will purchase additional lockers in sufficient numbers to provide lockers for every student in Years 7 to 12. In 2021, it is our intention to:

issue each student with a locker (at no cost)

require all students to store their bags in their locker during class time

allow students to carry their bag with them, if they choose, during recess and lunch breaks

Page 3: PARENTS AND FRIENDS€¦ · the games such as Road Safety, Kitchen Safety, Stranger Danger, Beach Safety and Fire Safety. The board games were presented in familiar forms such as

We will work with students throughout this year to determine where lockers should be located and how we will allocate lockers to students.

GOVERNING COUNCIL

Chair: Georgie Warren

“I define connection as the energy that is created between people when they feel seen, heard and valued - when they give and receive without judgement; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship” - Brene Brown When thinking about what to write about for this issue, the word connection kept coming to mind. How do we connect with each other? This led to the question – “How do we as a Governing Council ensure our connection with the school community is meaningful, inclusive and has purpose?” Over the past weeks, we have seen how people have connected with each other in different ways. As restrictions are lessening, we are coming together in person and having physical reconnections. Face to face contact has been long needed and desired by many. Our Governing Council has maintained our connection with each other and we continue to discuss and question what is important to the school. The governance of the school is our priority and we hope we achieve this for the wider school community. We hope you have felt connection with the school and feel confident you have been listened to during this time. We are here to listen to the needs of the school community. We see the big picture while working with our Principal, leaders and teachers who manage the day to day running of the school. We also listen to our families, parents, caregivers and wider community as they give feedback regarding the school or issues which arise over the school year. By presenting an opportunity for questioning, we can only grow better and become a more confident, open Governing Council. We

continuously learn about what it means to be in your trust and we believe in the relationship we have with our school community. Connective relationships is how we build trust and a positive culture. Please feel free to contact the Governing Council with questions. We hope to gain answers for you. Sometimes we will be able to give them to you, sometimes we will have to look to others for the answer. To contact us, please use the school email address [email protected]. Looking ahead, we have determined, with consultation from our Aboriginal families and with assistance from Wendy Noble (Aboriginal Services Education Officer) to have a dedicated indigenous voice on the Governing Council. This will mean a change to our Governing Council constitution and we see it as a timely and much needed change. We have also discussed including a student voice on Governing Council and look forward to this addition. There are also other discussions around increasing our membership which will be based on what is best for our school. This is what makes the GC interesting and how we connect with our community. The building works are very much on our mind and it is pleasing to see the tennis courts being refurbished and happy to note other works are finally commencing. We welcome the change with Happy Haven now managing our OSHC. It was not a decision taken lightly and appreciate the input by OSHC chair, Karen Leckie, as we navigated this change. We congratulate Sally for her appointment as Director.

In ending this month’s report, a final word on the quote from Brene Brown. We hope over the next months and years, as we strengthen our connection with you and the wider school community, you will in turn gain confidence and trust in us. That you will gain sustenance and strength from us. Connection is community, community is connection.

PARENTS AND FRIENDS

Another month has passed so quickly. We continued meeting via Zoom and had a fun time working with this platform. We were fortunate to have Damian Leach from Rotary join us and share Rotary’s vision for connecting with students and leadership at Charles Campbell College. We also discussed a future fundraising plan for a Father’s/Carer’s day to be held in September. Plans include running a raffle and a stall but this will be dependent on space within the school and other COVID-19 related issues. Please stay tuned for information regarding the Father’s/Carer’s Day raffle. We also will be liaising with the student leaders to discuss causes in need of fundraising. It will be great to hear their ideas about what they need for the school. We are connecting with Mary-Lou Michael, Assistant Principal (Years 7-9 and Student Voice and Agency) who will give both the P&F Community and students guidance. Our community is one who we look to for assistance and we hope to return the favour. The CCC P&F Community is currently looking for families who have a business in which they produce signage. Our community is looking to have a sign we can display at events so we are visible to our community. If you have such a business and are interested in providing a quote, please contact the P&F Community through either our FB groups or by email [email protected] We would love to support a family business. Thank you in advance. A reminder that everyone is welcome in our P&F Community. It is open to all parents, friends, grandparents, community members and teachers to come together, connect and support our College. You can contact us through https://cccpfcommunity.slack.com/ or join our FB page - CCC Parents & Friends Community Group and Campbell College Parents Group. We are progressing to having just one FB page. Due to some timing issues, we have not completed this but hope to soon. We remind people to use the pages responsibly and if there are any issues/feedback regarding the school, to contact the school directly.

Our Parent Development and Education Workshops have been put on hold for the foreseeable future. Our Successful Learning Workshops, which are aimed at parents supporting their children’s reading, writing and mathematics in the Junior Years, will hopefully start in Term 3 - but it is all dependent on the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. For further information please contact Kyung Cook [email protected] So far, we have trained eight parents to present these workshops, with their final workshop being held in a couple of weeks with the help of Caz Batson from Australian Parents Council. The parents are developing skills in presenting maths to other parents and caregivers. These workshops are an exciting new way of developing family skills in reading, writing and mathematics so parents can engage and deepen their relationship with their child and their school. CCC Parents & Friends Community is and will always be about building relationships. Relationships with our children, school and community; we continue to be grateful for your support and trust. Our last meeting was on Wednesday 17 June, Charles Campbell College Resource Centre, 7:30pm. If you would like to include an agenda item for future meetings, please contact [email protected] or message through our FB groups. “We don’t have to do all of it alone. We were never meant to.” - Brene Brown

STUDENT LEADERS NEWS

RED SHIELD APPEAL

In the last few weeks, the Student

Leadership Council has focused on

fundraising for the Red Shield Appeal for

the Salvos, by sleeping on the couch.

Jade H and Keira M with assistance from

other students, went around the school

promoting the fundraiser and

encouraging students to sign up.

The student leaders produced a short

video that was sent to Home Groups with

a sign-up sheet. A poster was also

created to announce the Red Shield

Appeal fundraiser.

Over 100 students signed up to sleep on

the couch for a night in May or June. Our

aim was to raise $1000. There were a

great number of donations and we were

able to achieve our target, making the

Red Shield Appeal a huge success! On

behalf of the Student Leadership Council,

we thank the community for their kind

donations and dedication to this event.

R-12 MOVIE CLUB

In response to high demand, the Student

Leaders have been developing an R-12

Movie Club. The students have until Week

10 to watch two movies and give them a

star rating. This is a good opportunity to

relax, stretch your mind and maybe even

watch a movie you have never seen

before. All films are available on

ClickView; links are provided in the forms

on Daymap. There will be a quiz during

Home Group in Week 10. Student Leaders

are developing a reward system, with

details to be announced soon. Every

HOUSE NAMING

Year 7 Student Leader, Rachel L

conducted a survey earlier this year about

naming Houses. We had 497 responses

and students overwhelmingly wanted

names for the House teams. Aboriginal

names for the four colours and the Native

Animals of South Australia were the most

popular results. The Student Leaders

decided to combine these results and use

Aboriginal (Kaurna) names for four Native

South Australian animals. We have a lot

more work to do before this can be

formally announced. Rachel will be

establishing a House Naming Committee.

If you are interested in joining, please sign

up at Student Services.

GIRL’S PANTS

Year 9 Student Leader, Mia

H has raised concerns about the CCC girl’s

school pants. She has created

and published video that was posted

on Daymap along with Hoorad N’s video

about the state of the school yard and

World Environment Day. Mia has also

published a survey that received more

than 160 responses. Mia submitted a

uniform proposal to the Governing

Council on 15 June. We will wait for future

directions as we try to come up with

alternative solutions.

SPORT NEWS

We are eagerly awaiting a date from the Department for Education and School Sport SA for the recommencement of school sport. Hopefully Term 3 will see the participation of sport back into full swing again! To keep students active and engaged during this time, we ran a lunchtime table tennis and badminton competition over a 5 week period. There were 25 students involved in table tennis and 20 students involved in badminton. It was great to see students having fun, turning up each week and challenging each other in order to climb their way up the championship ladder. Congratulations and well done to those who participated. The final results were: Table Tennis (Middle Years) – Michael P and Harper B Table Tennis (Senior Years) – Joe M and Callum L Badminton (Middle Years) – Alekhya S and Athena T Badminton (Senior Years) – Parsa Z and Sid K

The Year 10 Australian Rules Football Academy (ARFA) students ran a series of football skills sessions with three of our Year 6 classes as part of their “Service Learning” component. This component gets students out of the classroom and connecting with the community of a different age group, whether it be younger or older. It helps them to develop a sense of worth, allows them to understand how others learn and develops teamwork amongst the group. The students focused on teaching the fundamental skills of football and demonstrating positive attitudes.

With COVID19 restrictions easing, we were able to run our ARFA physical trials for CCC applicants only. The trial included: height measurement, a vertical jump, 20m sprint, 2km time trial, kicking test and small group game play activity. Applicants will be notified in due course as to their suitability and selection into the program for 2021. If your child currently plays for a football club or has excellent athletic abilities, please see the CCC website for more information about the program. CCC has the opportunity to nominate two students to participate in the Australian Olympic Change-Maker program. This program recognises and rewards students who are demonstrating the Olympic spirit through leadership and driving positive change in their communities. It is a chance to have students recognised for their fantastic work in leading teams, coaching juniors, supporting seniors, making a difference at a sports club, a national cause or effecting change on the world stage. The two students who have been nominated are Sebastian P (Year 11) and Furtuna L (Year 11). If selected, they will have the opportunity to connect with like-minded young people, learn from Olympians and experience the Olympic spirit first-hand. We wish them luck with their nomination. CCC applied for and was successful in obtaining a Sporting Schools grant to purchase tennis equipment for the junior school. The new tennis rackets and balls are currently being utilised by the Year 6 students during their PE tennis focused lessons and will benefit greatly from the new equipment. - Helen Martin

R-6 NEWS

During Term 2, Home Group 302 have been investigating measurement. We compared, ordered and measured the length, capacity and mass of objects. Students were asked to design and build a balance scale using twine, cups and a coat hanger to discover which objects had the greatest mass.

We also used Lego to design and create a building. After creating the buildings, students measured and recorded the width and length. - Andrew Wise

MATHS COORDINATOR

Staff Member: Daman Kour

My name is Daman Kour and I am the Year 7-12 Mathematics and STEM learning Leader. I am passionate about public education and contributing towards the success and improvement of students from varied contexts. I advocate for STEM learning, 21st century pedagogical practices and developing a growth mindset. Prior to Charles Campbell College, I worked at Norwood Morialta High school from 2015 to 2019 as a mathematics and science teacher and also as a maths coordinator. My role at Charles Campbell College is to professionally lead and manage the Mathematics Faculty with innovative and effective practices; to ensure high standards of teaching and learning are delivered in order to meet the needs of all CCC students; to ensure that resources are used efficiently and effectively. I believe our students are our future and I have a chance to play a part in shaping that future. I don’t know if I can name the single most important reason to become a teacher, but I can say that each day, I get to share my passion for learning, exploring, asking questions, and coming up with new and better solutions to

Page 6: PARENTS AND FRIENDS€¦ · the games such as Road Safety, Kitchen Safety, Stranger Danger, Beach Safety and Fire Safety. The board games were presented in familiar forms such as

problems. Each day is different and unpredictable. Each day, by showing kindness and empathy, I can make a difference. How many people can say that about their job? As a teacher, I can, and proudly do. I will take pleasure in notifying parents and caregivers of the many success stories that I’m sure will take place across the year. Please do not hesitate to contact me regarding your students’ progress and achievement in mathematics as we strive for positive outcomes.

SPORTS & PUBLICITY ADMINISTRATION OFFICER

Staff Member: Helen Martin

Helen commenced at Charles Campbell College at the beginning of 2019 in the role of Sports and Publicity Administration Officer, or “Sports Coordinator” as she is referred to by the PE staff. Her role is to plan and deliver an engaging, safe and inclusive extracurricular sporting program, predominantly for Years 7-12 students. This included Vista carnivals, state wide knockout carnivals, after school sport and CCC sports day. Helen also promotes the schools sporting achievements and programs to the wider community via our social media pages and newsletters. Helen has an extensive background as a Workplace Trainer and Assessor for the security industry and taught military communications at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra. Her experience in sporting event management includes the role of Operations Manager for the South Australian Police and Emergency Services (SAPES) Games which she held for three years. Helen loves watching all kinds of sports, particularly AFL and her beloved Adelaide Crows. She has played and coached netball and basketball most of her life until a second knee reconstruction put an end to her netball career. Helen continues to stay active by running, kayaking and undertaking strength training. She is enjoying her time at CCC, particularly coaching the after school boys and girls basketball teams and assisting at inter school sporting carnivals.

CHILD STUDIES

The focus for students undertaking the third assignment for Year 11 Child Studies was Child Safety. The students created board games to support their safety message.

The Year 3 and 4 students enjoyed playing the games such as Road Safety, Kitchen Safety, Stranger Danger, Beach Safety and Fire Safety.

The board games were presented in familiar forms such as Snakes and Ladders, Snap and Trouble. Many students won prizes and certificates for being successful. - Liz Wilkins

VISION SUPPORT PROGRAM

As COVID-19 restrictions eased, the activities that CCC students in the VI

Support Program regularly participated in recommenced in stages. We welcomed back Mel Holland. Mel is a specialist Orientation and Mobility (O & M) teacher from the SA School for Vision Impaired (SASVI) who provides our students diverse training in O & M. This training is designed to develop their skills and concepts to better understand and interpret their environment and navigate safely and independently. Under direct supervision, students have recently walked local and arterial roads, using assistive technology to navigate to local landmarks using safe, controlled crossings.

Mel also assisted a group of students to erect a tent. As this task is vision-orientated, Mel discussed a range of strategies that helped the group put the tent up without relying on just their vision.

The ‘Labs ’N’ Life’ program also recommenced and students were fortunate to work with a number of dogs, including some very enthusiastic puppies! Students participated in aspects of dog obedience training, walking dogs on a lead, as well as grooming, under the expert guidance of Bianca Wren. These activities are designed to empower our students to realise their potential

Page 7: PARENTS AND FRIENDS€¦ · the games such as Road Safety, Kitchen Safety, Stranger Danger, Beach Safety and Fire Safety. The board games were presented in familiar forms such as

through positive engagement with Labrador Retrievers. - Helen Nicholaou

WORLD ENVIROMENT DAY

On the 5 June, it was World Environment Day. World Environment Day is an initiative run by the United Nations which aims to spread awareness about global environmental issues. This year the theme was biodiversity with the hashtag #fornature.

Multiple activities and events took place to help students better understand the effects of single-use plastics and waste on the environment. A ‘sort the recyclables’ game took place on the oval in the Junior School. In this game, students were asked to sort recyclables into different categories (plastic, paper, glass, landfill, etc.) in order to better understand what can be done with the waste of different products they use.

On the other side of the college, a pledge tree was created. Each student who participated wrote a message about how

they can improve their environmental footprint on a paper leaf and glued it to a paper tree. These pledges are now displayed in the B-Building, reminding all students of the many small changes they can make to reduce waste in the school and their broader community.

Additionally, we held a Nude Food Day where students were encouraged not to bring wrappings for their food, and instead bring their food in containers. - Hoorad N- Year 8 Student Leader

LABS ‘N’ LIFE PROGRAM

I was lucky enough to be chosen to participate in the Labs ‘N’ Life program during Term 1. It’s a really great program and it’s so much fun being around the dogs.

During the program, we learn how to train Labradors. These dogs are going to be assistance dogs. We have learnt different dog commands and we do different things with them each week. I was disappointed when the program was stopped because of COVID-19, but it is back on now and I am very happy about that! The first day it started back, Bianca (the trainer) surprised us all by bringing puppies. It was super exciting! In the photo I am holding Stella. She is seven weeks old. It was fun playing with the puppies, but I did miss my normal dog, Whiskey. When the puppies came we took them all around the school to show everybody. - Aidan F, Year 8

BUILDING WORKS

We are excited about our $11m building works that will conclude in 2022.

Our students will enjoy carefully designed spaces on both our Reception to Year 6 and Year 7 to 12 sites.

We’re enhancing our music, dance and drama facilities in our Performing Arts Precinct and redeveloping our courts and active spaces in our Sports Precinct. New Chemistry, Physics and Biology laboratories and Technology facilities are being created and a glassed atrium and staircase will complement our dynamic new Arts spaces.

Page 8: PARENTS AND FRIENDS€¦ · the games such as Road Safety, Kitchen Safety, Stranger Danger, Beach Safety and Fire Safety. The board games were presented in familiar forms such as

Our new commercial kitchen and café will provide opportunities for our students to cater for audiences at our performance evenings. The College will continue to invest in our grounds beautification works for the enjoyment of our students.

YEAR 9 ART

EXHIBITION OF OIL PASTEL ANIMAL PORTRAITS Currently on display in the CCC resource centre is a collection of realistic animal portrait illustrations.

Students undertook this task to learn how to use oil pastels, in a painterly manner to build detailed, richly coloured representations of an animal photograph of their choice.

This was a collaborative task with the teacher, Mrs Lesley Kretschmann, directing each student to identify the subtle colours that were visible in the image and then challenging them to recreate the depth of colour as precisely as possible with the oil pastel media.

The task enables students to develop their eye for detail as the photo acts as an immediate reference point. It also builds student’s artistic confidence when the last layer of colour brings the image to “life”. Students should be proud of their achievement.
