Objective: To help parents understand the post-

secondary pathways for Normal course students

• Nitec (National ITE

Certificate) Course

• Higher Nitec Course

• ITE Traineeship Courses

• Polytechnic Foundation

Programme (PFP)

• Direct-Entry-Scheme to

Polytechnic Programme

(DPP)

What are the various Post-Secondary Education options available?

3. Junior Colleges (JCs) or Millennia Institute

1. Institute of Technical Education (ITE)

2. Polytechnics

Prepares students for the GCE ‘A’ level examination

Trains students with relevant skills for the workplace in a knowledge-

based economy

Equips students with technical knowledge and skills relevant to the

industry

4. Private Schools & Institutions (LaSalle/NAFA etc)

Curriculum is determined by the school and alternative options are

provided for students

Institute of Technical Education (ITE)

For students with an

aptitude for hands-on learning

2-Year Full-Time Nitec Courses Different categories of Nitec courses come with different

entry requirements such as 3 passes in pre-requisite

subjects. Example:

ITE Aggregate Points Computation Admission is merit-based, and posting is based on aggregate

of best 4 GCE N-Level subjects, including pre-requisite

subjects and bonus points where applicable.

Traineeship Training System •For students to experience the working world and still get a

Nitec certificate at the same time

ITE’s Technical Diploma

• Technical Diploma in Culinary Arts

• Technical Engineer Diploma in Automotive Engineering

• Technical Engineer Diploma in Machine Technology

Extended Nitec Foundation Programme (e-NFP) •From 2013: For Sec 4N(T) students with 0 or 1 N-level

subject pass to build literacy and numeracy foundations

• First admission in 2013

• An option for academically strong Sec 4NA students to join polytechnic without the need to do Sec 5

Diploma Courses at 5 Polytechnics offering PFP

Polytechnic Foundation

Programme (PFP)

• Practice-Oriented Curriculum

• For students who are academically strong

and clearly polytechnic bound (top 10% of

Sec 4N(A))

– Expected to achieve ELMAB3 ≤ 11 at N(A)-

levels; and Grade 3 or better in EL, MA and 3

other relevant subjects

– More than 80% of polytechnic courses are

offered under the PFP

14

Aggregate Score and Subject Grade Requirements

• Minimum requirements for PFP:

ELMAB3 aggregate score of 11 points or better

EL, MA and 3 relevant subjects at least Grade 3

Science & Technology Poly Course Type

Meeting the minimum requirements does not equate to admission to PFP.

Whether an applicant is given a PFP offer depends on the number of applicants

and vacancies available for the course.

Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) Students who have sat for GCE ‘O’ Level Exams in a few subjects

• Students are allowed to combine their ‘N’- and ‘O’-Level examination results to compute their eligibility.

• GCE ‘O’-Level Grade conversion matrix will be adopted during the computation of aggregates.

• 'O'-Level Grade Aggregate Point for PFP

New

Instead of doing Sec 5 for O-Level,

Sec 4NA students are admitted

directly to poly to study 1-year Poly

Foundation Prog (PFP) followed by

the Diploma course.

Direct-Entry-Scheme to Poly Prog

(DPP)

18

• Another option for academically good Sec 4NA students to join polytechnic without the need to do Sec 5

• After completion of a 2-year Higher Nitec Course, admission to 1st or 2nd year of Poly is guaranteed with the minimum GPA (Grade Point Average) requirements

Direct-Entry Scheme to Poly Prog

(DPP)

• For students who are fairly strong academically (top 10

to 30% of Sec 4N(A))

– Expected to achieve ELMAB3 ≤ 19, with EL ≤ 4 and

MA ≤ 4, at N(A)-levels

• Designed for students whose learning styles are more

suited to application-based and hands-on learning

environment in ITE

19

Meeting the minimum requirements does not equate to

admission to DPP. Whether an applicant is given a

DPP offer depends on the number of applicants and

vacancies available for the course.

Aggregate Score and Subject Grade Requirements

• Minimum requirements for DPP:

ELMAB3 aggregate score of 19 points or better

EL & MA must be at Grade 4 or better

Direct Entry Scheme to Poly Prog

(DPP)

• Advantage of choosing DPP over Sec 5N

– Students are assured of 1st or 2nd year place in

related poly Diploma course, if they attain qualifying

GPA scores

• Need not compete with national O-level cohort to

get into their preferred poly course

• Opportunity to skip to 2nd-year in poly (for some

courses)

– Majority of ITE DES Higher Nitec courses will

articulate into various related polytechnic courses

Difference between DPP & Higher Nitec

Only Sec 4NA can apply for PFP and DPP!

When an NA student proceeds to Sec 5N to take O-Level, he

will not be allowed to apply for PFP/DPP using N-Level results

if his Sec 5N O-Level results do not quality them for Polytechnic education.

DPP: Guaranteed progression to Year 1 or Year 2

Poly course upon completion of Higher Nitec with the

qualifying Grade Point Average (GPA).

Higher Nitec: Progression to Poly is subject to

competition with other Higher Nitec students for the

limited vacancies.
