June 2021

Dear Parents,

A challenging year will soon come to an end and students will soon be on a well-deserved summer

holiday. We are already hard at work preparing for the new school year. We look forward to working

together with our school community to help our students reach their full potential as lifelong learners

and as productive members of society.

Collaboration between the school and the home is essential in accomplishing this goal. To that end,

we kindly ask that parents take the time to review the Lester B. Pearson High School Student Code of

Conduct found in the Student Agenda, once students receive them at the beginning of the school year.

It is important for both students and parents to have a clear understanding of the school’s expectations

with regards to student conduct as to ensure a positive, productive and safe environment for students

and staff alike.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our families a pleasant and restful summer. We

hope you return recharged and ready to make the most of the new school year. To all our new

students, we would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Lester B. Pearson High

School family!

Sincerely,

The Administration

June 2021

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Below you will find your child’s 2021 Suggested Summer Reading List. We suggest your child read at least one of the novels from this list. They are encouraged to identify significant plot points, symbols, themes and ideas as they read, as well as enjoy the novel and embrace the love of reading. In order to help your child with his/her reading selection we have included a short synopsis of each of the novels.

We encourage students to order the novel online, in keeping with the social distancing rules set forth by Santé Public, yet local bookstores have the novels in stock. If ordering online, please anticipate 2 to 3 weeks for novels to arrive, therefore do not wait until the end of summer to order. If you plan to purchase at a bookstore, look into getting the books at the beginning of summer as it may take 2 to 3 weeks to receive books if they run out of stock. Public libraries are also a good option to find the novels. Online libraries such as Sora are also options.

Please take note that this year your child will NOT have a Summer Reading Test, as this is a Suggested Reading List. However, teachers may reference the novels at some point in the year.

We hope you and your child have a restful summer and we look forward to starting the new school year in September.

“Funny You Don’t Look Autistic”By: McCreary, MichaelSlaying autism stereotypes with stand-up, one joke at a time. Like many others on the autism spectrum, 20-something stand-up comic Michael McCreary has been told by more than a few well-meaning folks that he doesn't "look" autistic. But, as he's quick to point out in this memoir, autism "looks" different for just about everyone with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) . Diagnosed with ASD at age five, McCreary got hit with the performance bug not much later. During a difficult time in junior high, he started journaling, eventually turning his pain e into something empowering--and funny. He scored his first stand-up gig at age 14, and hasn't looked back. An #OwnVoices memoir breaks down what it's like to live with autism for readers on and off the spectrum.From:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/41005592-funny-you-don-t-look-autistic?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=H MGXsXU8fy&rank=1

“Feed”By: Matthew Tobin AndersonFor Titus and his friends, it started out like any ordinary trip to the moon — a chance to party duringspring break. But that was before the crazy hacker caused all their feeds to malfunction, sending themto the hospital to lie around with nothing inside their heads for days. And it was before Titus met Violet,a beautiful, brainy teenage girl who has decided to fight the feed and its ever-present ability tocategorize human thoughts and desires. M. T. Anderson’s not-so-brave new world is a smart, savagesatire that has captivated readers with its view of an imagined future that veers unnervingly close to thehere and now.Synopsis from Indigo

“Never Fall Down”By: Patricia McCormickThis National Book Award nominee from two-time finalist Patricia McCormick is the unforgettable storyof Arn Chorn-Pond, who defied the odds to survive the Cambodian genocide of 1975-1979 and thelabor camps of the Khmer Rouge.Based on the true story of Cambodian advocate Arn Chorn-Pond, and authentically told from his pointof view as a young boy, this is an achingly raw and powerful historical novel about a child of war whobecomes a man of peace. It includes an author's note and acknowledgments from Arn Chorn-Pondhimself.When soldiers arrive in his hometown, Arn is just a normal little boy. But after the soldiers march theentire population into the countryside, his life is changed forever.Arn is separated from his family and assigned to a labor camp: working in the rice paddies under ablazing sun, he sees the other children dying before his eyes. One day, the soldiers ask if any of thekids can play an instrument. Arn's never played a note in his life, but he volunteers. This decision will save his life, but it will pull him into the very center of what we know today as theKilling Fields. And just as the country is about to be liberated, Arn is handed a gun and forced tobecome a soldier.Synopsis from Indigo

“Long Way Down”By: Reynolds, JasonAn ode to Put the Damn Guns Down, this is New York Times bestseller Jason Reynolds’s fiercely stunning novelthat takes place in sixty potent seconds—the time it takes a kid to decide whether or not he’s going to murder theguy who killed his brother.

A hammerA toolfor RULE

Or, you can call it a gun. That’s what fifteen-year-old Will has shoved in the back waistband of his jeans. See, hisbrother Shawn was just murdered. And Will knows the rules. No crying. No snitching. Revenge. That’s whereWill’s now heading, with that gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, the gun that was his brother’s gun.He gets on the elevator, seventh floor, stoked. He knows who he’s after. Or does he? As the elevator stops on thesixth floor, on comes Buck. Buck, Will finds out, is who gave Shawn the gun before Will took the gun. Buck tellsWill to check that the gun is even loaded. And that’s when Will sees that one bullet is missing. And the only onewho could have fired Shawn’s gun was Shawn. Huh. Will didn’t know that Shawn had ever actually USED his gun.Bigger huh. BUCK IS DEAD. But Buck’s in the elevator? Just as Will’s trying to think this through, the door to thenext floor opens. A teenage girl gets on, waves away the smoke from Dead Buck’s cigarette. Will doesn’t knowher, but she knew him. Knew. When they were eight. And stray bullets had cut through the playground, and Willhad tried to cover her, but she was hit anyway, and so what she wants to know, on that fifth floor elevator stop, is,what if Will, Will with the gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, MISSES.

And so it goes, the whole long way down, as the elevator stops on each floor, and at each stop someoneconnected to his brother gets on to give Will a piece to a bigger story than the one he thinks he knows. A storythat might never know an END…if WILL gets off that elevator.From:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22552026-long-way-down?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=B69o29iNUV&rank=1
