Philosophy

Friends School Haverford was founded as a co-educational, Quaker, elementary school. The school remains under the care of* Haverford Monthly Meeting of Friends (Quakers) and serves nursery school through grade eight.

Our program is rooted in academic challenge, intellectual vigor, artistic expression, service, and kindness. We encourage children’s curiosity, creativity, and joy of discovery as they grow intellectually, spiritually, physically, and emotionally.

We foster an atmosphere in which students learn to work independently and in cooperation with others. They are challenged to question, explore, reflect, reason, and communicate effectively.

Friends School Haverford cultivates a community characterized by diversity in belief, ethnicity, race, and socioeconomic background. We emphasize the Quaker tenets of integrity, service, simplicity, equality, community, peaceful conflict resolution, stewardship, and sustainability.

Students are encouraged to listen inwardly and to learn to recognize That of God** in themselves and others. These shared values are reflected in the daily life of our school and in Meeting for Worship.

We teach our students to be contributing members of the community, to grow and to change with flexibility and courage, and to treat others with care and understanding.

Friends School Haverford graduates possess the intellectual and spiritual skills necessary to envision and create successful and meaningful lives.

Diversity Statement

At Friends School Haverford, diversity is an essential aspect ofour lives and education. Diversity exists in the colors of our skin, ourgenders and ages, our sexual identities, the structures of our families,the traditions we observe, the languages we speak, the financial andeducational resources we bring, and our unique gifts and abilities.Faculty, staff, students, parents, and school committee members exploreand embrace differences of all kinds with enthusiasm and respect.

Friends School Haverford affirms that our heritages and beliefshelp to define us as individuals. Our commitment to learning about oneanother and the larger world unites us as a community. As we learn ina diverse and inclusive community, we come to recognize that of Godin ourselves and others. We intend that graduates of Friends SchoolHaverford carry with them a strong sense of their own identity, ahigh regard for the value of differences, and an eagerness to find andacknowledge the commonalities within the human race.

School Culture Document

These are our “school” values. However, we expect our students to embody these principles and live them in the wider world.

We organize our values into three categories.

1. With our words and our actions we take care of ourselves.2. With our words and our actions we take care of each other.3. With our words and our actions we take care of our environment.

As a Quaker school we teach the implementation of these values in the context of testimonies that inform our behavior. These testimonies, known by the acronym SPICES, are simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship. We present the testimonies as queries here, so that reading them prompts us to reflect upon whether and to what extent we are successfully leading lives that exemplify righteous behaviors in service to our values.

• Simplicity: Am I using only what I need? Am I thankful for what I have? Or, am I being wasteful or showing off?

• Peace: How am I promoting peace within myself and in my community by not harming others physically or emotionally? Am I a peaceful problem solver? Or, do my actions provoke conflict?

• Integrity: Am I trying to be my best self? Am I the same best self alone and in my community? How do I strive to say and do what I believe in my heart to be right? Or, with my words or actions do I deceive others?

• Community: Am I courteous? Am I including others who wish to be included? Am I engaging others, who may be different than me, with interest and empathy? Or, do I leave it to others to build community? Do I put others down?

• Equality: Am I treating others the way I want to be treated? Do I value others the way I value myself? Or, am I privileging myself in some way?

• Stewardship: How am I taking care of and encouraging others to care for shared indoor and outdoor spaces and property? What are my shared spaces and property? Or, do I leave it to others to take care of shared spaces. Am I destructive of shared property?

Background

Meeting for WorshipMeeting for Worship lies at the heart of education at Friends SchoolHaverford. Each meeting begins as children and adults quietly enterthe Meeting House and proceed in silent waiting. There is no orderof service. Anyone present may stand and share a message. At FriendsSchool Haverford, partner classes (pairing older and younger students)sit together; partners stand to support their friend when he or she rises tospeak. Messages are received with quiet appreciation and thoughtfulness.

Friends School Haverford requires attendance at Meeting for Worshipof all students and teachers, regardless of religious affiliation. Themeeting does not impose specific articles of faith or belief on individuals;rather it creates time and space for individual and community reflection.We welcome into our community families of all religions; we encouragefamilies to share their traditions with the community while remainingopen to the spiritual journeys and traditions of others.

We gather in the Meetinghouse on Thursday for approximatelyfifteen minutes. At the conclusion of the Meeting for Worship, we singa song and hear announcements. Parents are invited to join the community whenever possible for this time of reflection and sharing.

School HistoryFriends School Haverford was founded in 1885 by the Haverford Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends in response to a strong need in the area for Friends elementary education. Starting as a one-room Schoolhouse, it soon doubled in size. By 1913, increased enrollment necessitated the construction of a new building, which, with extensive additions and renovations, constitutes the present main Schoolhouse. In 1988, Heritage House, a multi-purpose facility, was built to house a gym/auditorium and the pre-primary classrooms. In the summer of 1994, a state-of-the-art Learning/Computer Center was installed in the main building. In the spring and summer of 2000, the main Schoolhouse underwent an extensive renovation and a new classroom wing was added. During 2007-2008, the playgrounds were significantly improved through the Fields for Friends program.

Friends School Haverford is located in a quiet, natural setting on the grounds of Haverford Meeting, and is surrounded by three play areas equipped to strengthen the muscles, improve the coordination, challenge the imagination, and provide access to the wonders of the natural world, all in a safe environment for children in nursery school through grade 8.

GovernanceThe school is governed by the School Committee, appointed by the Haverford Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. The School Committee consists of sixteen members, at least ten of whom must be members of the Society of Friends and at least five of whom must be members of the Haverford Monthly Meeting. Membership includes a nominee of the PTO and a nominee of the faculty. Current and former parents are well-represented.

The School Committee has responsibility for the long-term goals, fiduciary and general oversight of the school and reports to the Monthly Meeting. School Committee seeks open communication with the extended community. Administration of the school is delegated to the Head of School.

Accreditation and MembershipFriends School Haverford is accredited by the Pennsylvania Associationof Independent Schools (PAIS), and is a member of the Friends Councilon Education (FCE), the National Association of Independent Schools(NAIS), Independent School Teachers Association (ISTA), Association ofDelaware Valley Independent Schools (ADVIS), Multicultural ResourceCenter, Philadelphia Area Independent School Business Officers Association (PAISBOA), Independent School Management (ISM), and Philadelphia Independent School Consortium.

CurriculumFriends School Haverford's curriculum is a rich blend of languagearts, math, science, social studies, art, music, technology, health, physicaleducation, and library. Art, music, science, computer, Spanish, and physical education are each taught by a specialist in the field. In addition to classroom and coordinate teachers, the school's Learning Resource Team (LRT) plans enrichment and support for students. The LRT includes a learning specialist, psychologist, and reading specialist. The dean of students, technology coordinator, and Extended Day Program Director also support the curriculum in various ways.

General curriculum information is posted at www.FriendsHaverford.org. At Curriculum Night in early fall, teachers inform parents of the specific curriculum for their child's grade.

Parent-School PartnershipAll parents are welcome as full participants in the learning community of Friends School Haverford and are automatically members of the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Because children learn best when all the adults around them are involved in their education, the faculty and staff work in partnership with parents to provide the best possible growing and learning experience for each child.

An understanding of the Friends School Haverford philosophy andacademic curriculum is central to building the partnership between homeand school. Please keep yourself informed by reviewing the school'scurriculum, reading the weekly update, attending PTO events and other meetings throughout the year, viewing the school's website and e-mails, discussing questions and concerns with your child's teacher, and by generally communicating with us about your child's joys, successes, concerns, and needs.

If you would like to volunteer for any PTO activity, please call a PTO officer or class parent. You are welcome and encouraged to become involved in the life of the school.

Bringing An Issue ForwardIt is natural on occasion for a parent to have a concern about something that they hear is going on at school — our first job as parents is to look out for our children. Should you learn of something that concerns you, be it from a child or another school parent, we encourage you to communicate with us right away. Experience teaches us that being sure of the facts is usually the best place to begin — children are not always the most reliable reporters, and rumors have been known to differ from reality. Experience also teaches us

that 99% of such matters are easily clarified or resolved. Therefore, here are suggested routes to follow: 1. If you have a concern about something that has occurred in a particular teacher's class, call that teacher first. 2. If you have a concern about what might be going on socially for your child, call her/his homeroom teacher or advisor first. 3. If you have a concern about a teacher, still call that teacher first, and try to set up a meeting. 4. If you are uncomfortable in following one of those steps, call the Head of School, who will listen carefully and will then need to ascertain facts himself by talking judiciously with the teacher(s) involved. 5. If you have a question about a school procedure or policy, call the Head of School. To repeat, it is the first step that's most important: give us a call so we can get right to the matter at hand.

School Policies

AdmissionIn keeping with its Quaker philosophy, Friends School Haverford does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, or national origin. Each applicant is considered on individual merit and the ability of Friends School Haverford to respond to his or her particular needs.

Financial AidThe policy of Friends School Haverford is to support qualified studentswhose families are not currently able to afford full tuition whenever possible. Financial aid may be available for PK-8 based on need and availability of funds for that grade. Requests for financial assistance are submitted in January and reviewed annually by the Financial Aid Committee. If you would like information regarding financial aid, contact the Director of Admission at 610-642-0354.

Equal OpportunityFriends School Haverford admits students of any race, religion,national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, andactivities generally accorded or made available to students at theschool. In administration of any of its policies and programs, includingeducational, admission, financial aid, and athletic, the school does notdiscriminate on the basis of race, religion, or national or ethnic origin.Renovations made in the spring and summer of 2000 have made theschool accessible to individuals with physical limitations.

Safety PolicyFriends School Haverford is committed to having a safe environmentfor school students, staff, and guests. We ask all guests to report to the front office in the Schoolhouse to sign in and receive a visitor's pass. This

includes parents, family members, friends, former students, former employees, etc. Guests must enter through the front Schoolhouse doors. All other doors will be locked after drop off. If you need to access Heritage House after drop off, please report to the Schoolhouse front office, and someone will assist you.

We ask all staff, students, and parents to share in the responsibility forsafety. Please report at once any condition that compromises safety to people or property to an appropriate person. Action will be taken as quickly as possible to control or eliminate any identified serious hazard.

All safety-related laws and regulations must be obeyed in the course ofdaily school operations and during after hour functions.

School Messenger Telephone Call SystemThe School Messenger Telephone Call System is used to communicatewith all parents and teachers about:• School Closing• Special Events• Part of our Crisis and Emergency PlanPlease listen to the message before calling school. This allows the phone lines to remain clear in the event of an emergency.

Crisis/Emergency ProceduresFSH has a comprehensive crisis/emergency procedure plan in place.Faculty and staff are trained and prepared to implement the plan. Wewill communicate immediately with parents using the School MessengerTelephone Call System in case of an emergency. We ask that parents follow any instructions that are given and not immediately rush to school. Fire drills are regularly conducted during the school year, and lock down drills are performed two times a year.

The school has an emergency system which allows us to have directcontact with the local police department.

Student RecordsThe school keeps an individual file for each student, includinga permanent record card and copies of all school reports. In compliance with the Family Education Right to Privacy Act, any parent of a student in good standing may, in writing, request to see that student's record. At least 24 hours shall pass between the school's receipt of a written request and the parents' viewing of the record. Records will be reviewed in the presence of a school administrator. The school must have written parental permission to send reports or records of any student to another school,

third party, or agency. Records will be released only when all financial obligations to the school have been met.

Policy on Learning Differences and DisabilitiesFriends School Haverford recognizes that children learn in originaland variable ways. In addition to a skilled faculty, our reading and learning specialist support our teachers and students. The school psychologist and dean of students support our students, teachers, and families as well.

It is always our hope that every child admitted to Friends SchoolHaverford will graduate from the school, but even with all the care andsupport we give to every child, this is not always possible. At times, evenafter receiving specifically designed educational support services andintervention strategies developed by our staff and outside professionals,a child may continue to struggle academically or exhibit behavior ofsuch frequency, duration, or intensity that it disrupts that student's ownlearning or the learning of others. In these cases, the child's parents mayneed to find educational options other than Friends School Haverford. IfFriends School Haverford is not an appropriate placement for the child,the Head of School and Learning Resource Team will work with the child's family to explore alternate appropriate placements.

Technology Program Acceptable Use PolicyFriends School Haverford provides computer access to its studentsand staff for the pursuit of its educational goals. The school has aninternal network connecting its computers and providing Internet accessthroughout our buildings. The school believes the educational benefits ofcomputer use and Internet access far outweigh the potential risks. Despitethe school's precautions, the possibility remains that students mayencounter inappropriate or hurtful material. Such cases are addressedas they arise. Furthermore, the school cannot guarantee the accuracy,quality, or scholarship of information obtained through the Internet.Our network provides the following benefits:• Access to information and research• Opportunities for communication and collaboration• Learning experiences that are responsive to student needs andinterests• New ways of supporting school assignments, as well as for creatingand publishing work

Written assignments created using computer technologies at FriendsSchool Haverford allow students another way in which to demonstratetheir work and, at the same time, allow teachers another insight into

student thinking. Teachers have access to student files and folders onthe school's computers. Our goal is to promote educational excellenceby enriching curricular content, improving our ability to collaborate andmaking learning more authentic and effective.

Acceptable use of technology at Friends School Haverford includes anyactivity that is consistent with the school's educational mission. Anyactivity that is illegal, malicious, profane, threatening, or that violatesthe privacy of others is unacceptable. Any material promoting violence,pornography, or discrimination is inappropriate. Attempting to vandalize,damage or disable any school equipment or connection is unacceptable.Accessing and/or tampering with another person's files is alsounacceptable. The school's expectations of how students and teacherswill use technology resources in support of this goal are contained in theschool's Acceptable Use Policy. It includes, but is not limited to, usingcomputers and other technologies:

• Only with teacher permission to support an educational objective;• Only to access material authorized by a teacher;• With care to preserve our limited resources; and• To show respect for others, through courtesy and appropriate language.

Students and parents are expected to affirm their agreement with thePolicy before students are given access to technology resources. Violationof these policies will have serious disciplinary consequences.

Finally, the school cannot be responsible for lost, damaged, ordelayed work caused by computer malfunctions, Internet service loss, oruser error.

Parents are advised to monitor carefully their children's use ofthe Internet at home, just as we do at school. Inappropriate messagessent to other students over the Internet will have serious disciplinaryconsequences.

WebsiteThe Friends School Haverford website is www.friendshaverford.org. Care is taken to protect the identity of FSH students. Parents are encouraged to check the website often for calendar updates and school events. The weekly e-mail update is the most current source of news and events and includes links to the school's website and Facebook page. The school calendar is available on the website. Follow the “calendar” link at the top of any page. Please let us know if you do not have access to e-mail or the internet so that important updates may be sent home in Kid Mail.

General Information

AttendanceClassrooms are open at 8:00 a.m. and teachers are ready to receivetheir students at that time. The academic day begins promptly at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. for children in grades 1 through 8; The school day begins at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m. for kindergarten students. Nursery school, preschool, and pre-kindergarten students have the option of attending school from 8:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. or from 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

Please make sure your child is on time so that he or she does not miss the important opening moments of the day. Children should report to the office before going to class when arriving after 8:15 a.m. for any reason.

Regular attendance is important, but a sick or tired child does notlearn; sick children may spread illness to others. Please be considerate ofother children and the teachers and keep a contagious child at home.

If your child is to be absent or late for any reason, please call before 8:00 a.m.

Arrival and DismissalChildren who arrive by car after 7:15 a.m., but before 8:00 a.m., mustgo to Early Birds and pay the fee for that service. At 8:00 a.m. childrenwill go to their classrooms.

Dismissal is at 3:00 p.m. daily, except on days noted on the calendaras “Noon Dismissal.” Any child who is not picked up by 3:15 p.m.,except those taking the bus, will go to Extended Day. The fee for ExtendedDay will be charged.

For your child’s safety, please remain in your car at drop-off and pick-up until an adult is available to help your child get in or out of the car. If you would like to drop off your child and walk him or her to the classroom, please park in the lot by the sheds.

Early BirdsEarly Birds provides supervision for Friends School Haverford students from 7:15 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. for an additional fee. Parents may drop off their children on a regular or occasional basis. Bus riders who arrive before 8:00 a.m. are not charged a fee. Please consult the school'sDirector of Finance and Operations for additional details.

Extended DayParents may enroll their children in the Extended Day program from 3:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. each school day for an additional fee. Extended Day is contracted at the beginning of the year, but is also available on an occasional, drop-in basis for a fee. Consult the Director of Extended Day Programs for additional details. Please send a written request by email or call the school office to arrange for your child to drop in to the Extended Day program.

Summer ProgramsFSH Day Camp is for children ages 3-8 and runs through the month of August. It is a wonderful experience for both experienced campers and children new to summer camp.

Vacation CareChild care is available on many days when our school is closed. Sign-up information will be sent home by the Director of Extended Day Programs. Space is limited for vacation care.

LARKSLate Afternoon Recreation for Kids (LARKS) sessions are optional after school clubs for students in preschool through grade 4. LARKS provide these students opportunities for exploration, peer connections, and fun. Clubs are sponsored by our own faculty, outside teachers, or FSH parent sponsors, and are split into three 8-week trimesters: fall, winter, and spring. After School ActivitiesAfter-School Activities (ASAs) are available to middle school studentsin the fall, winter, and spring. Activities include ice skating, field hockey,and horseback riding. AthleticsCo-ed soccer and cross country teams in the fall, a co-ed basketball team in the winter, and co-ed tennis and softball teams in the spring are offered. Team practices are held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

TransportationUnder Act 372 of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, schooldistricts are required to provide the same transportation service toindependent schools as they do for public schools. To be eligible fortransportation, non-public school pupils must live more than 1-1/2 milesfrom school and must attend a school located within their district or nomore than 10 miles outside their school district. Our school provides thenames and addresses of our pupils to the various school districts. Thedistricts then determine the bus routes as they see fit and notify parentsof their place on the route. Some bus route information is available in theschool office late in August. Other information is published in the localnewspapers prior to the first week of school. Most school districts providetransportation for children in kindergarten through grade 8. No guests areallowed on school buses. No child will be let off a bus at any stop otherthan his or her regular stop. Check with your school district for additionaldetails and policies.

If your child has been invited on a play date, is having a guest afterschool, or is leaving school by other than his or her usual transportation,please write a note to the teacher or call the school office early in theday (by at least 1:00 p.m.). If we do not have a note or have not received a phone call from the parent regarding a change in dismissal plans, we must abide by the dismissal plans that are on file in the school office.

Some parents prefer to organize car pools to drive their children toschool. The school is happy to provide you with names of children in your area if you wish to form a car pool.

On the days when we dismiss at noon, we will notify you with a blueform in kid mail as to which townships will be providing transportation.

Campus ParkingWeekday parking from 7:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. in the school driveway isreserved for faculty and staff only. Parent parking is in lot by the sheds.

Campus Traffic & Circle GuidelinesPlease enter the school grounds through the south gate on Buck Lane andexit through the north gate (exit closest to the Meeting House).• The speed limit for the school grounds is 5 miles per hour.• Please do not use cell phones in the traffic circle.• You must put your car in park before your child exits the car.• Children should be dropped off at the main entrance to their buildingand exit from the passenger side only. Please remain in your car until an adult is available to help your child get out of the car.

• If you are using the inside lane to pass a car dropping off a child,please use extreme caution.

Safeties (older-student volunteers), faculty, and staff will be on dutyto assist your child at arrival and dismissal. During the school day, the upper portion of the traffic circle closest to the main Schoolhouse will be closed off. If you have to pick up or drop off your child after 8:15 a.m. or before 2:45 p.m., please make arrangements with the office.

*At dismissal: nursery school, preschool, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten students should be picked up at the entrance to Heritage House beginning at 2:45 p.m.; first, second and third grade students should be picked up at the front door of the main Schoolhouse building beginning at 3:00 p.m.; fourth through eighth grade students should be picked up on the Meeting House porch beginning at 3:00 p.m. All cars picking up students must be identified with a placard bearing the child(ren)'s name(s). We ask that in the interest of easing congestion and safety, parents not engage teachers in conversation at this time. If your child(ren) is/are not in sight and ready to be picked up, please drive around the oval again. For the safety of our children there is no parking in the sheds area or on the oval during dismissal (2:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.). For the safety of the children who are waiting for buses, cars parked in the sheds area will not be permitted to leave until after 3:15 p.m. Travel slowly and quietly through campus, on Buck Lane, and other neighborhood streets. Do not park on Oakley Road or Walnut Lane. Street parking is reserved for residents and non-residents will be ticketed by Haverford Police.

School ClosingYour first source of information will be a phone call from the SchoolMessenger Service by 6:30 a.m. with a message about school closinginformation.

Other sources of information will be KYW (1060 AM), Radio ClosingNumber Delaware County 442. WPVI TV 6, Fox 29 and WCAU-TV 10 willdisplay our name on-air.

School is closed when we determine that the snow, rain, or ice creates extremely hazardous transportation conditions, or if most of the township buses will not be operating. If you feel that transporting your child(ren) will be unsafe, even if we do not close school, please feel free to keep your child(ren) at home. When weather conditions warrant, school may open 1 or 2 hours late. Delayed openings will be broadcast as noted above.

If a major snowfall occurs while school is in session, Friends SchoolHaverford does not close until all children are dismissed. However, in asnow emergency, township buses may arrive early, and on short notice,to pick up children. If a township bus does arrive early, the school officemust first obtain a parent's permission for their child to take that bus.Since this is often done on short notice, please be sure to notify the officeof your snow emergency contingency plan in September. It is importantto develop a contingency plan with a neighbor who is willing tosupervise your children in the event of early transportation home duringinclement weather. Please inform your children of this plan.

In the event of a serious snowfall, we encourage you to pick up yourchild as early as possible so faculty can get home safely, too. Please callthe school to let us know when you expect to arrive.

Vacations and HolidaysThe school allows for appropriate vacations and national holidaysin the academic calendar. We ask parents to plan their own family's tripsand vacations in accordance with this schedule. Children need to knowthat attending school is important. If an unavoidable trip takes you andyour children out of town during school time, please inform the Head ofSchool in writing, at least one week ahead of time.

Student HealthPlease keep your child at home if he or she is ill. This ensures yourchild's early recovery and avoids exposure of others to the illness. Ifa child becomes ill while at school, we will call the parents and askthat the child be taken home. We do this when a child has a fever, hasvomited, or when there are other symptoms that the school staff or Haverford Township nurse determine if it is inappropriate for the student to continue school activities.

Children attending school are required by Pennsylvania law topresent to the school a physician's signed statement of immunization.Physician's signed medical examination records are required for all newstudents and pupils in kindergarten and grade 6. The school office willsend parents the required forms. The Haverford Township nurse monitorsrecords and provides advice on health-related matters.

Please return your child's Student Emergency Information sheet byAugust 31. Be sure to list specific allergies or other significant healthconditions. It is important to keep the school informed of any change inemergency phone numbers. A record of your child’s immunizations must be sent to school prior to the first day of school.

In the event of an accident, we will attempt to reach parents,meanwhile administering first aid. If parents cannot be reached, theschool will call 911 and the child will be taken to the nearest hospital formedical care. If the emergency occurs away from school, the child will betaken to the most convenient source of emergency medical care.

Over-the-counter and prescription medication should be given tochildren at home whenever possible. If it is necessary for a child toreceive medication at school, parents must contact the township nurse.Parents must personally bring any medication to the school office inits original container and clearly marked with the child's name, grade,type of medication, nature of illness, dose and time medication is to beadministered. We will administer medications to children only withthis prior and explicit written permission of parents and the writtenprescription of a doctor. If a change in medication is necessary, thephysician's change in medication must be given to the township nurse.Medication, whether prescription or over-the-counter drugs, is given onlyby the township nurse or, in her absence, the school office staff. Pleasedo not send any medication in your child's backpack or ask a teacher toadminister medication.

The school observes state regulations regarding infectious diseases.Any child who has a contagious disease such as lice, impetigo, pinkeye, strep, etc. may return to school only after having been judged noninfectious by a doctor or the township nurse.

Reports, Conferences, Standardized TestingClassroom teachers (nursery school through grade 8) meet with parentson specified conference days to review each child's progress. Any parentor teacher may request additional conferences. These meetings providean opportunity to share observations about your child and establisha cooperative approach toward his/her growth. We hope that, whenpossible, all parents will attend the conferences, since each parent isimportant to a child's development.

A written report encompassing student progress through the firstsemester is mailed home in January for students in grades 1 through 8.At the close of the school year, a final report is mailed to parents. Reports are mailed to families who have met their financial obligations to the school.

Once a year, standardized testing is administered to complement ongoing assessment of students' skills and to monitor our academic program.The Educational Records Bureau (ERB) assessments are given to studentsin grades 5 through 8.

HomeworkReading to or with our children is the best single thing parents cando to foster learning. From it children learn so much – appreciationof whole new worlds, different writing styles, all sorts of vocabularyand pronunciation, the fun of discovery, the comfort of being lost in a great story, and so on. Children are also capable of understanding works read to them that they could not readily comprehend on their own. We will happily consult with any parent to help locate great books.

Whether assignments are intended as reinforcement for specificskills learned at school or as catalysts for future classroom discussions,homework assignments are designed to help each child takeresponsibility for his or her own learning. Parents are encouraged tobecome active, supportive listeners in this process. While whether or how to assist varies from individual to individual, resisting the urge to “help” is usually a good idea. Our goal for students by the end of grade 8 is that they will have developed independence, discipline, and the ability to plan their time effectively. The amount of work and the number of subjects assigned each day vary according to the age of the child. Specific expectations for homework are communicated to students and parents by teachers. Please share immediately any concerns you have about the amount or type of homework with your child's teacher.

LibraryEach child may sign out any book in which he/she is interested,since the books in our library reflect the school's nursery school throughgrade 8 focus. Teachers offer guidance to each child in choosinga book at his/her level and appropriate to his/her interest, but do notscreen out or discourage a child from choosing a certain type of book.Our goals are to foster a love of reading and a freedom to choose. Parentsare encouraged to review the books their child has chosen and to discussthem with the child.

Student Rules and BehaviorStudents at Friends School Haverford are expected to conduct themselves in a responsible and appropriate manner. Rules for behavior are age-appropriate. Violations of the rules and expectations are handled individually by the teachers, the school psychologist, dean of students, and the Head of School.

We emphasize respect for personal safety, respect for school andprivate property, and respect for nature. Children may be sent home fromschool for unwanted physical contact (e.g. fighting, biting, or spitting). Playground equipment must be used as intended and therefore children

are not permitted, for example, to run up the sliding boards or engage in other potentially dangerous activities. Children must always be within sight of a supervising adult. We do not permit weapons of any kind or war toys at school. Children are not permitted to have chewing gum at school. Students should not bring excessive amounts of money or valuable items to school. Students are not permitted to use cellular phones, radios, personal music devices, or hand-held computer games during the school day or in Extended Day Programs. If used, such items will be confiscated and returned to parents.

It is critical that all children feel safe in their school community.Therefore, if the school believes that the behaviors of a particular studentpose a threat or potential threat to the student him/herself or to others inthe community, the school will take action. Consequences of such seriousbehaviors may include suspension or expulsion from the school. In such cases, the Head of School may also consult with the teachers, the LRT, the administrative team, the School Committee, and legal counsel.

Weapons PolicyWeapons of any sort are forbidden at Friends School Haverford.Possession of weapons (including pen knives) is contrary to law, toFriends School Haverford policy, and to the philosophy of the Societyof Friends. Any student who brings a weapon to school will be subjectto sanctions, including, but not limited to, immediate suspension. If achild inadvertently brings something to school that might be considered a weapon, he/she should turn it in to a teacher immediately.

Student DressChildren are expected to be dressed simply, neatly, and comfortablyin clothing appropriate to their ages and to all the activities of the school.In accordance with the Friends' belief in simplicity and moderation,camouflage clothing and clothing with adult messages such as alcohol,gambling, etc. may not be worn to school. Because physical educationis a daily part of our curriculum, children should wear athletic shoes(no cleats or “wheelies”) to school. Be sure your child's name is clearlymarked on all clothing, especially hats, mittens, boots, jackets, sweaters,and other removables. In consideration of other children's allergies,students should not wear perfume.

The school maintains a lost and found bin in the Heritage Houselobby. Please check the bin prior to vacations, as unclaimed items willbe donated to a local charity at the start of winter, spring, and summervacations.

LunchSchool lunch may be ordered from JPM Catering. The cost is $6.25 per lunch. Lunches feature whole (not processed) foods that are locally grown and organic. Lunches may be ordered at jpmcatering.com

SnackSnack time is provided daily and due to the large number of food allergies, snacks must be brought in from home. Soda and candy are not appropriate. Glass containers are not permitted.

TreatsIf you wish to send in baked goods or treats for your child's class,please check with the teacher prior to sending them in, so she/he canplan the classroom schedule and make you aware of any allergies.Students with food allergies will be encouraged to bring a snack fromhome for special classroom events.

Kid Mail and Other Communication MattersIn an effort to save on postage, information is posted on our website,e-mailed weekly, and sent home with the children. Please check withyour children for any important flyers, and, if requested, indicate that youhave received a letter by returning the attached slip with your signature.Communication envelopes will be sent home every day. Please check theweb site calendar for the most up-to-date information.

Messages will be given to your child when necessary, but children cannot be called to the phone and may not use the phone, exceptin emergency circumstances and with the permission of their teacher.Please call with messages for your child early in the day.

Each family receives a copy of the Parent Handbook and Directory inthe fall. The directory is intended for the social convenience of students,parents, and faculty. It is not to be used for solicitation, advertising, orother commercial purposes. Individual class lists are available in the office. Families are encouraged to supply the school with an e-mail address.

The Annual Fund and School FundraisingThe Annual Fund is an important part of the life of any independentschool. At Friends School Haverford, the Annual Fund directly supportsthe school's operating budget each year. Tuition covers 80% of the costof educating each child and your generous tax-deductible gifts help tobridge the gap between tuition and the cost of educating each child. Annual Fund dollars go immediately and directly toward the enhancement of classroom programs, the purchase of books, teacher salaries, physical education equipment and other necessities to benefit the students' overall learning experience.

The Annual Fund campaign gets underway in September and isfollowed up in late October with a community-wide Phone-a-thon.

Parents, family members, friends and other supporters have anopportunity to make a contribution to the school during the fiscal year,which runs through June 30. Contributions range from $5 to $5,000 andabove. Leadership gifts start at $250. All gifts are tax-deductible. Theschool's Annual Report listing donors is published each fall. To be listedin the Annual Report, gifts must be received no later than June 30.

Fundraising activities throughout the year are under the directionof the School Committee's Development Committee. There are numerousopportunities to support the school, which have a meaningful, long-termimpact. These options include planned giving, major gifts, and gifts to theendowment. EITC-Educational Improvement Tax CreditsFriends School Haverford has been approved to participate in theEducational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC). This programprovides significant tax advantages to participating companies whiledramatically supporting financial aid programs for Friends SchoolHaverford students.

If you are affiliated with a company that pays Pennsylvania taxes, EITCprovides a tax credit of up to 90% to companies that donate to non-profitscholarship and educational improvement programs. The Friends SchoolHaverford Scholarship Organization is now a qualified recipient of thosefunds. The FSH Scholarship Organization supports the school's mission to be an intentionally diverse community by making a superior educational experience available to as many capable and talented students as possible, regardless of economic circumstances.

Tax credits reduce your actual tax bill dollar for dollar. That meansyou can make a gift to the FSH Scholarship Organization with minimalcost to your company. For example: If your company makes a $10,000 giftto the FSH Scholarship Organization, your PA tax liability will be reduced by $7,500. If you pledge to make that gift for two consecutive years, your $10,000 gift will reduce your liability by $9,000 each year. The remaining out-of-pocket expense is federally tax-deductible.

Re-enrollmentRe-enrollment agreements are sent to parents in February. To ensurea child's place for the following year, parents should return the re-enrollment agreement to the Admission Office with a non-refundabledeposit which is deducted from the upcoming tuition.

A family who has enrolled for the following year is obligated for thefull year's tuition and fees unless, by May 1, they notify the school inwriting of their intention to withdraw. An extension of the re-enrollmentdeadline may be requested by calling or writing the Admission Directoror the Head of School prior to May 1; after that time, extensions cannot beconsidered.

Any request for an increase in the amount of time in a student'snursery school, preschool, or pre-kindergarten program must be discussed with the teacher and the Admission Director prior to effecting the change. We are unable to reduce a student's program once it has been established.

Admission OutreachWord-of-mouth is our single best source of attracting new families tothe school, so spread the word! We welcome your suggestions of familiesto contact, schools to visit, and events to attend. Open Houses are scheduled throughout the year and appointments for private tours can be made through the Admission Office by calling 610-642-0354.

Special Programs and Events

Host Family ProgramEach spring of the current school year the Admission Directormatches up a reenrolled family with a family new to FSH. The hostfamily's role is to help acclimate a new family into the life of the school.

Partner ClassesUpper and lower grades are teamed together in partner classes whichmeet regularly and work on joint projects (e.g. book buddies, meeting partners, and family groups) These activities build community and help promote understanding among children of different ages. The Partners program helps children develop friendships throughout the school, reinforcing our sense of community.

Service LearningIt is important to Friends School Haverford's philosophy that children learn to help others through involvement in service projects. Over the years, the school as a whole and individual classes have workedon a variety of activities, including collecting food for people in shelters,clothing drives for The American Friends Service Committee, andraising funds for the American Heart Association, Greater PhiladelphiaFood Bank, Heifer International, Project H.O.M.E., The HungerProject, and the Monteverde Cloud Forest School, to name a few.

Birthday Book ProgramA Friends School Haverford tradition is for students to give books to the school library on the occasion of their birthday. Such gifts are recognized by a special book plate in honor of the donor.

Drama and Performing ArtsEach year many of the grades, at the discretion of the teachers, present plays and other performance programs to their partner classes,at school assemblies, and for the enjoyment of the entire schoolcommunity. For most of these events, such as the annual class plays,parents are invited to attend. Announcements of performances will bemade in weekly e-mail updates and in Kid Mail.

TripsMany field trips are planned throughout the year in conjunction withtopics studied. Responsibility for planning trips rests with the teachers.Class parents often help with supervision. A signed parent permissionslip for trips, such as to the climbing tree on the Haverford College campus during the year must be on file in the school office at the beginning of the year. During the year, parents will be asked for additional permission slips for each individual class trip to other places.

Curriculum NightCurriculum Night is held in the fall. Each teacher reviews his orher program for the current year. Parents have the opportunity to look atclassroom materials their children will be using. Please feel free to askquestions pertaining to the course of study. Questions about your child'sprogress should be reserved for individual parent-teacher conferences,which you may request at any time.

Teacher In-Service DaysAs part of the school's ongoing effort to provide its faculty withopportunities for professional growth, in-service days are held severaltimes each year. These days enable faculty to attend conferences, to visitother schools, or to meet together for further training and planning for theimprovement of the school's program.

Grandfriends’ DayGrandfriends’ Day is an opportunity for grandparents or a specialfamily friend to share a morning at the school. If your child does not havea grandparent who is able to attend, please feel free to invite a specialadult relative or family friend to fill in. We have some wonderful specialfriends of the school who are on stand-by to spend the day with yourchild if you're loved-ones are unable to attend. There are many visitingopportunities for parents throughout the year, so we ask that parentsreserve this day for our other visitors.

Spring Concert and Celebration of the ArtsIn order to showcase the breadth of the arts curriculum at FriendsSchool Haverford, the school hosts the Celebration of the Arts each spring. Students in grades 1-8 present a Spring Concert, which showcases aspects of their year-long study in music. On the same evening, we kick-off a two week Student Art Exhibition. Under the direction of the art teacher, a sampling of each student's artwork is exhibited throughout the school.

Field DaysField Day is held on the Friday before Memorial Day for grades 3 through 8. Events take place in the morning. All school families are welcome to watch the events. Grade 1/2 students have their own field day. Parents will receive more information from their classroom teacher.

School AssembliesVisiting performers and speakers come to the school from timeto time during the year. In addition, students make presentations atassemblies at various times.

Toddlers & FriendsToddlers & Friends is a play and learn program for toddlers 20-36 months and their parents or caregivers. Children create art, explore, play, and learn at Friends School Haverford's beautiful campus. Parents can discuss child development issues with outside experts and Friends School Haverford educators. Classes meet once or twice a week and include art activities, sessions, sensory exploration, snack, indoor and outdoor play, and much more.

Holidays

BirthdaysMany children like to share their birthday by bringing a snack to school for the class. Please notify your child's teacher and arrange a date in advance. Invitations to parties at home must be sent through the mail; we do not allow them to be handed out at school. Party hosts are responsible for providing adequate adult supervision at all times. Friends School Haverford encourages inclusiveness in our community. Our hope is that the same spirit will extend into birthday celebrations outside of school.

HalloweenChildren may wear child-inspired or store-bought costumes to school for the all-school Halloween Parade. Simplicity is the key, especially for the younger children. Children need to have regular clothes to wear for the remainder of the day. Scary masks are not permitted out of consideration for our younger students. In keeping with our Quaker philosophy, costumes may not include camouflage, weapons, or weapon-like accessories.

Holiday Meeting for WorshipA special Meeting for Worship for the entire school community isheld just before winter vacation. It is a time to share the diverse religioustraditions that typify our community.

Gift GivingDuring the holiday season we give our students the opportunity togive of themselves through a service project. We prefer that a child whowants to give a gift to a faculty or staff member gives a child-made gift or something for the school in honor of the teacher or staff member they wish to celebrate.

Valentine's DayTeachers will be in touch with parents about observing Valentine’s Day in the classroom.

Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)

The PTO is an active volunteer organization at Friends SchoolHaverford. Parents, faculty, and staff are automatically members and thereare no dues. Meetings occur regularly and are on the school calendar. Allparents are encouraged to attend. The PTO program for the school year ispresented at the first annual meeting held in September, and funds raisedduring the previous year are presented to the school. We encourage everyparent to get involved in the life of the school in a way that fits yourschedule and your interests. There are volunteer opportunities before,during, and after school hours. It's a wonderful way to be connectedto your child's education, to befriend fellow parents, and to make adifference in the life of the school.

How to Get InvolvedThe leadership of the PTO includes the current Co-chairs, Secretary, Treasurer, and the PTO Liaison.

Class AmbassadorsClass ambassadors act as a liaison to the PTO and help ensure effective communication between home and school. They bring together the parents in their classes to take on various tasks for the school. Class ambassadors organize class projects, coordinate event volunteers, and assist the teacher with special events when requested.

Spring Fair, Auction, and 5K Financial Aid ProgramRace: Footsteps for FriendsThese are three of the most important fundraising events for whichthe PTO is responsible. The 5K race, Footsteps for Friends, is held annually each fall or spring. The Spring Auction is scheduled in even years (2016, 2018, 2020 etc...). The annual Spring Fair takes place on campus the Saturday before Mother's Day. This carnival-style event has activities for children along with crafts, homemade food, games, and great music. It is a wonderful day for family and friends. All of these events require the commitment of many volunteers to make them happen. There are many opportunities to sign up for what suits you best, to get involved, and to have fun! Funds raised at these events support a variety of programs including the Head's Discretionary Fund and Financial Aid.
