A Message from the Parent Coordinator Dear Parents,
I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday and winter break. We are
approaching to the third marking period of the school year,
upcoming Regent exams, preparing for SAT and early college. There
have been many accomplishments made possible by many hours of
dedicated work by our staff, students and parents. Our students
continue to succeed and show their interest in learning. We take
pride in our parents who are engaged in their student’s school
accomplishments and support their children’s efforts.

Dear Parent,
The FAFSA form requires up-to-date income
information to determine how much your family
might be able to contribute to your college
costs. Ideally, much of this information will
come from you and your family’s most recent
tax records. Follow these steps to make sure
your form is complete and up-to-date
FAFSA’s online form is the best and easiest
way to provide this information. The form will
walk you through the questions you need to
answer about your family’s income, savings,
and other financial assets.
If your family files U.S. tax returns every year,
you should definitely use the IRS Data
Retrieval Tool. Colleges will know your income
information is accurate. They will be less likely
to ask you for proof.
If all goes well, your FAFSA financial
information will be filled in safely and
accurately with one click of a button!
One important issue: The FAFSA requires tax
information from the calendar year just
completed. Unfortunately, your FAFSA form
should be filed in January or February—and
many families don’t send in their tax forms until
April, when they are due. In this case, refer to
the most up-to-date financial documents you
have. (For example, your parents probably got
W-2 income statements from their employers in
January or February.

Part of dealing with alcohol and drug problems is to stop them from ever
occurring. Part of this list includes protective factors developed by experts to
teach parents how to make family like important, promote mental health, and
prevent underage use of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs. If you can
create the following conditions at home, you can help decrease a child’s
chances for taking drugs or engaging in other risky behaviors. To reduce a
teenager’s risk for becoming involved with alcohol, tobacco, and illegal
drugs, here are the top effective ways to prevent or reduce teenage drug and
alcohol abuse:
Model the behavior you seek.
Be a positive role model yourself. Walk the talk. Don’t expect teens to
stop drinking or stay away from drugs if you don’t.
Resolve personal or family issues.
Seek family counseling or psychotherapy for any family issues about
substance abuse, violence, divorce or illness in your family. Get the help you
need so that you can be sure that your family unit (and teenager) are
mentally healthy.
Know what’s going on.
Be involved in your teenager’s life. Know who their friends are, what they are
doing and where. Encourage their independence but set appropriate limits
like curfews and check-in times. Keep teens accountable with consequences
for stretching beyond the limits.
Teach the science of drugs and alcohol.
Talk about drinking and drugs – not just the statistics, but the science behind
it. This requires research on the brain science of what substances do to the
body.
Help find alternative activity options for your teen.
Learn about community and school activities that may interest your teen and
encourage him/her to participate. Teenagers who are active in sports,
volunteering, social or church groups are less likely to get bored, or seek out
drugs and alcohol for fun.
One-on-one time.
Drug testing a teen should always be a last resort when trying to help your
child. Regularly spend time with your teenager and give your loving,
undivided attention. Some sample activities to share: a walk, bowling, playing
tennis, a bike ride, a quiet dinner out, or cooking together.

My name is Maria LaPinta
What does a typical day looks like for you?
I follow the same routine practically every day. I teach three classes
since I am the Assistant Program Chair and a Spanish teacher. I
work in the program office in the morning and I teach my three
Spanish 1 classes at the end of the day during Periods 9, 10, and
11.
What do you like about Forest Hills High School?
My entire teaching career has been at Forest Hills High School. I
consider this school as my second home. I love teaching and
interacting with the students and watching them grow into young
adults. I have also become friends with so many talented people. I
have been friends with these individuals since the beginning of my
career.
What do you do when you are not working?
I spent most of my time with my family when I am not working. My
husband and I are very busy with our two children and all of their
extracurricular activities. I also enjoy spending time with my
friends. I like to cook and I enjoy attending Zumba classes.
How can parents help their children to do better at Forest Hills?
It is very important for parents to communicate with their child’s
teachers and to monitor their child’s progress.
Happening in Hills
We will be holding weekend regents tutoring. See the dates
below for specific subject availability. Tutoring is from 9:00
am - 12:00 pm. Students should check for room assignments
when they enter each time. Tutoring is open only to FHHS
students and you must have school ID to enter.

Что вам нравится в средней школе Forest Hills?.
Вся моя педагогическая карьера была в средней школе Forest

January 2018 Dear Parent or Guardian, We would like to offer to our students the possibility of participating in the National French Contest (“Grand Concours”) to be held on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at the Forest Hills High School. The Grand Concours tests are developed annually by the American Association of Teachers of French as a motivational, extracurricular activity/contest for students of French. The Grand Concours is on the list of approved tests published by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) http://www.principals.org/. Your child is in a French (1, 2, 3, and 4) class. Our French level (1, 2, 3 or 4) students choosing to participate in this year’s Grand Concours will take the level 1, 2, 3, or 4 exams. This exam is a multiple-choice test of 70 items covering listening, comprehension, vocabulary and grammar in context, as well as readings, all equivalent to that of a 1-year, 2-year, 3-year and 4-year curriculum. We encourage our students to experience this test. There is no failure nor are there negative consequences to the test. There are prizes for those earning National and Chapter recognition as well as certificates for those scoring in the top 50% and the top 20%. Those whose scores represent the top scores nationally are considered Lauréats Nationaux and as such receive a certificate and a prestigious National award. Also, it is important that students bring their headphones for the listening part of the exam. Please note: This is the only time that students may register for this exam this school year. To register in the Grand Concours, please sign and return this form along with the $12 payment by Friday January 12, 2018.
