    Dear Middle School Parents,

We had the opportunity to welcome new parents at our Middle School new parentco ee this Thursday - if you are a new parent and were unable to a end, we arealways open to mee ng with you and to share more about our MiddleSchool. Thank you to our PTA parents who were there as always to support ourschool program, and also our wider parent community.

Math has been a focus this week for learning at ISM. We have had the pleasure ofworking together with a math consultant from the United States - Steve Leinwand, who held a parent workshop on Tuesday and has been working closely with teach-ers all week to re ect on our prac ces and learn more about how we teach andlearn math. Finding a balance between conceptual learning, deep thinking, ex-pressing understanding, and numerical uency as an important goal to achieve forall students.

Feedback is an important part of the learning process. This happens in severalways, as a part of the learning process daily in lessons and through forma ve as-sessments that guide instruc on and individual growth and development. Anotherway we give feedback and communicate learning is through our semester report

cards. As you know we have made some changes to our grading and repor ngprac ces, and we are now ready for our rst round of sharing your child's learn-ing. You will receive a separate email with the informa on on how to access yourindividual child's report card through the parent portal.

    Yours in Educa on,

MS ISTA Theatre Fes val this week!

    What is Happening?

ISTA is nally here and the six visi ng interna onal schools alongwith the 10 scholarship students from local service groups will bearriving on Thursday a ernoon. We will be hos ng students fromBeijing City Interna onal School, American Interna onal School ofGuangzhou, Hong Kong Interna onal School, Harrow Interna onalSchool of Hong Kong, Nishimachi Interna onal School from Tokyoand Mont'Kiara Interna onal School Kuala Lumpur. The fes val willrun over three days, star ng rst thing on Friday morning and cul-mina ng in a sharing of a devised performance on Sunday, January25th at 3.30pm in the Fine Arts Theatre. Anybody is welcome towatch the performance, which is followed by an ISTA representa-ve speaking. The sharing should only take around 45 minutes.

For those hos ng, the nal placement of students will be sent toyou on Monday via the emails you provided on the housing sheet. Ifyou haven't heard from me by Tuesday, please contact the Fine ArtsO ce on 8408400 ex 631 or email me.

    A Big THANKS!

An ISTA (Interna onal Schools' Theatre Associa on) fes val bringstogether interna onal students to par cipate in theatre workshopsand ensemble building work. There are 110 students par cipa ngand these are split into 5 ensembles who work over the course ofthe 3 -day fes val to create a short group performance based on thefes val theme.

Bayanihan, a Filipino word for a spirit of communal unity and coopera on, was chosen for our fes val theme because we de-cided to exchange the regular sightseeing trip with a Saturday Service and also include ISTA scholarship students from our localservice learning partners.

However, the concept of Bayanihan is best exhibited at this fes val in the following ways: The many ISM families who have opened their homes to our visitors The ISM sta from ES, MS and HS who are giving up their Saturday morning to lead our visitors on the Saturday trip Neil Woods, Mary delos Santos and Cory Willey who provided their exper se in planning the service learning experiences. Each of the 5 service learning partners we will be visi ng who have dedicated several sta to suppor ng our visits The HS Fine Arts Council who are gree ng our guests at the airport and helping coordinate housing on the day of arrival The wonderful administra ve and support s ta who help with ordering, scheduling, transpor ng and generally makingideas happen The security sta who have worked hard to ensure the safety at sites

The PTA for helping adver se housing Trish Pazcoguin for another wonderful poster design

In short, I feel very lucky that I'm at ISM whilst organising this fes val because the Bearcat Spirit appears to be interchangeablewith the concept of Bayanihan. It really has taken representa ves from all of stakeholders in ISM's community to make thisfes val possible.

    Best Regards,

Marsha Hillman Fine and Performing Arts Director Interna onal School Manila
