Measles on the rise in Manila

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease and remains an important cause of death among young chil-

dren globally. It is transmitted via droplets from the nose, mouth or throat of infected persons. Initial symp-

toms, which usually appear 10–12 days after infection, include high fever, a runny nose, bloodshot eyes,

and tiny white spots on the inside of the mouth. Several days later, a rash develops, starting on the face

and upper neck and gradually spreading downwards. A sick person is infectious five days before until four

days after the appearance of rashes.

Severe measles is more likely among poorly nourished young children, or whose immune systems have

been weakened. The most serious complications include blindness, encephalitis (an infection that causes

brain swelling), severe diarrhea and related dehydration, and severe respiratory infections such as pneu-

    monia.

2013 has seen an outbreak of measles in several cities, in particular in the Capital region, with 416 cases

(and 21 fatalities), after only 25 cases were confirmed in 2012.

The measles vaccine has been in use since the 1960s. It is safe, effective and inexpensive. WHO recom-

mends immunization for all susceptible children and adults for whom measles vaccination is not contrain-

dicated (severe allergic reaction after a previous dose, severe immunodeficiency, pregnancy). The vac-

cine usually comes in combination with mumps and rubella (German measles) vaccine and is then called

MMR. 2 shots are needed to ensure a lifetime immunization, which are normally given at the toddler age.

In 1-2% the immune system does not produce antibodies; therefore the individual can still fall sick with

    measles. Or mumps. Or rubella.

Should a child not have received 2 shots within an interval of 4 weeks or more, they need a second shot.

Should an adult (18 years and above, born 1970 or later) not have documented evidence of receiving 2

shots of measles-containing vaccine in their childhood they should be immunized with one single dose of

MMR. Women should delay pregnancy by 4 weeks following vaccination with MMR.

Adults born before 1970 are presumed to have acquired natural immunity and do not need vaccine neither

as a routine nor in case of an outbreak. They are only vaccinated in case of a confirmed exposure to the

    virus.

The vaccine is available at Market!Market Healtyway and other branches (phone 751 4929) for 900 PHP+

400 PHP consultation fee, CoHess in St. Luke’s (phone 789 7700 x 7038) for …….or the corporate health

department in Makati Med (phone 999 9888 x 2187) for 850 PHP+850 PHP consultation and administra-tion fee, to name a few.

Should you have any questions or concern please contact us by phone at 840 8581 or per mail at clin-
