Education Week was a great opportunity for me to

work alongside your children and engage in teaching

and learning experiences at our school. It is such a

privilege and an honour to be a public school

principal at Hurlstone Agricultural High School.

Over the past few weeks I have visited and participated in classes across

the school. I have attended education opportunities beyond our school

that have showcased your children’s talent and highlighted the important

partnerships teachers undertake with your children to extend opportunities beyond the classroom to maximise each child’s potential

and give them an opportunity to engage in critical and creative thinking,

excel on sporting fields or challenge their ability to solve real world

problems in a rapidly changing world.

Innovation, skill and design thinking can be showcased in many ways. I

would like to share with you a collection of individually designed cakes

from Mrs Wheeler’s year 9 Food Technology class. The class invited me

to share their practical class and view their assessment work, it was

exciting to see the students work in action.

Tevin Luu’s skill in creating a galaxy cake, featuring a mirror glaze,

Kyah Rostron’s adept use of fondant modelling featured in her jungle

swamp cake and Marina Jovanic’s perfection bake in a cookie’s and cream

From the DP Desk

Looking Good!

Just a reminder to all parents and students that sports uniform is acceptable and comfortable to wear on

Wednesdays. It is acceptable for students to change into sport uniform for PE and SLR lessons only. We

know it is cold and students like to be comfortable on other days, but the sports jacket is not part of the dai-

ly uniform. Students should wear a blazer or jumper to school with their winter school uniform and see a

deputy if they are out of uniform before school to obtain a note.

The Donut Quad/Library Gate

As we have noted before, the safety and security of your children is of the utmost importance. As a result,

the gate near the Library (the Donut Quad Gate) on Roy Watts Road is locked during the day. It will be

locked by 8:50. Any late students can gain access though the administration office or enter via the pedestrian

gate near the railway station.

In the afternoon, students need to be off the school grounds 15 minutes after the last bell, as the gate will be

locked shortly afterwards. Their exit from the school will be by the pedestrian gate near the railway station.

A convenient place to arrange to meet them, especially if you are running late, would be at Glenfield. Prob-

lems with Roy Watts Road gate might make this the better option. And your child gets some exercise!

If your child works late in the library, they will have to exit by the railway pedestrian gate as the librarian will

be supervising in the library.

Future Leaders

Applications for the student leadership team (prefects) for 2019 close Wednesday August 22 and we are

looking forward to reading these. We gain a great insight into what your children can achieve as potential

leaders. The range of activities that they are involved in for altruistic reasons is remarkable. We congratulate

all students who have applied and thank you as parents for supporting them to succeed beyond only academ-

ic pursuits.

Hurlstone Invades Canberra!

This coming weekend, Mr Sam Cavallaro accompanies three year 11 students to the MUNA (Model United

Nations Assembly) in Canberra where Hurlstone will represent Israel in a mock session arguing a case. We

are looking forward to hearing about the experience.

Hurlstone will also be invading at a Q&A Session later in the month. There is more on this in the newsletter,

but again, your children’s participation in all these activities are exciting and rewarding for all our community.

Congratulations in advance from the dps.

What if Australia’s Hurlstone high school students ran our country?

The ABC’s Q&A program is planning their third “Q&A High School Special”, broadcast live across the

nation on Monday 10th September from the ANU’s Llewellyn Theatre in Canberra.

The audience will be all students and they will be putting the questions they want answered to a panel

including high school kids and senior politicians from government and opposition.

Hurlstone students, led by Olivia Antony of Year 10, put together an application for 20 of our students to be

in the audience and we were successful!

Details of the trip will be forthcoming, including cost for accommodation etc, in the coming days.

We are soooooooo excited!

Check out our successful application:

As students of Hurlstone Agricultural High School, we offer a unique perspective on political matters. Our

student body is diverse and compromises students from 56 language backgrounds with differing social,

economic, geographical and ethnic backgrounds which lead to a range of opinions and points of view. Our

students are capable individuals who exemplify the bright future of Australia.

As a secondary school, Hurlstone stands out for all the right reasons. We have an excellent reputation for

academic achievement, heightened sense of social justice, with the largest membership of Rotary

International Youth Action Group in the southern hemisphere and our agricultural focus. Hurlstone students

participate in a range of sports and extracurricular activities and engage with the wider community.

Hurlstone has an excellent relationship with our community (which extends across the state and includes

Norfolk Island) and has a history we record and honour. The bond between the school and its students

remain after graduation, with an active alumni who still engage with the school community. The student’s

commitment to helping with causes, shows a dedication to the betterment of Australia.

Our school proudly provides multiple opportunities for students to learn about current issues. The decisions

being made in the government are also reviewed and discussed in relation to the country's use of resources -

both physical and those intangible. Students have learnt to correlate cause and effect on the basis of data and have developed a greater sense of analytical thinking.

Hurlstone teachers and students explore the interconnectedness between people, culture, country, and

place as well as past and present economic activities, when attempting to form their own ideas. This

highlights the determination - as well as capability - of our students to go beyond and stretch the limits of

knowledge in relation to political matters.

The students of Hurlstone would learn a great deal, along with contribute to your panel discussion next

month.

The 20 students (including Oliva Antony) who will be attending plus entourage (Ms Davis, Mr

Payne, Ms Pham)

Game Changer

The Hurlstone Game Changer Team had an extremely valuable and productive four days last week. The

team, made up of Year 10 students Ella Colville; Antriksh Dhand; Chris Tan; Insha Siddiqui; Lameah Nayeem

and Zahra Huda spent 3 nights and three days between the Park Royal Hotel in Parramatta and Game

Changer Headquarters at the recently opened Department of Education Offices, also in Parramatta.

Yes...we did enjoy a little luxury...

The students were one of eight high school teams that worked with the design company Tricky Jigsaw, a

design student mentor and industry representatives from a range of tech companies to create a pitch on the

school of the future. They then delivered their pitch to a high profile panel that included Mark Scott.

Students used their crash course in design thinking to propose a complex and sophisticated program to

increase the sense of purpose in education. Their imagined framework extended education beyond the 21st

century learning skills to develop the "whole person" with a focus on aspects such as empathy and ethics.

Their envisaged program included two stages. Stage 1 began as a virtual world, with students both inhabiting

and constructing their worlds in teams. Teams could be national or global. Program designers would embed

specific challenges to monitor individual progression. Once students were assessed as having demonstrated a

skill, they would earn a key. The keys were graded bronze, silver and gold - recognising the more abstract

skills such as empathy as more valuable. Once you had your 5 gold keys you unlocked your next challenge.

Stage 2 of their program saw students graduate from a simulated environment to the real world. Vertically

streamed global teams of students would work on site to solve issues around the world in a year long project.

Mark Scott paid tribute to Hurlstone Agricultural High School for "its graded, sequential ethical learning

framework".

Carenne School in Bathurst was named the secondary school winner of the inaugural Game Changer

Challenge competition for its ‘wellness biome’ in a natural environment with learning pods, calming water

features, comfortable furniture and the school counsellor and therapy dog nearby.

“Secretary for a Day” written by Sienna O’Dea - Year 11

Last week I was fortunate enough to participate in the ‘Secretary for a Day’ as part of Education Week.

I was one of thirty four students selected from across NSW to take part in the two and a half day program.

I was assigned to ‘shadow’ Mark Scott, Secretary of the Department. Mark Scott has achieved a high career

profile being a former Managing Director of the ABC, a leading journalist for Fairfax media and also a political

advisor. As part of his role as Secretary he attends many important events including, with me as his ‘shadow’,

the official opening of Education Week. At this event I met NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and NSW Minis-

ter for Education Rob Stokes.

After attending the launch, I sat in on a diary planning meeting with Mark Scott and it was eye opening

to see how many invites he gets in a week to attend events all over the state. As the

Department’s representative on the NESA board, he also holds meetings with the Directors of the

Catholic and Independent schools. He also held a meeting where all students in the ‘Secretary for a Day’

program partook in a round table discussion. We discussed a range of topics ranging from artificial

Intelligence, future schools, new curriculums and the HSC.

“Secretary for a Day” Continued...

On the second day in groups we came up with a strategy that could be implemented in schools regarding the

Department of Education’s strategic goal of ‘every student is known, valued and cared for within our

schools.’ The strategy many groups developed was the implementation of more structured extra-curricular

groups and activities in all schools. It was widely agreed that when students meet people and form friend-

ships based on similar interests that the most effective way for students to feel known, cared for and valued.

I am very grateful to be given the opportunity to take part in this program and I would like to thank Ms

Young for assisting me with my application. This program has been one of the highlights of my schooling as I

gained great insight into decision-making processes and I met and worked with people who make the

decisions that ultimately end up trickling down and impacting the students in the classroom. I strongly

encourage students who will be in years 10 or 11 next year to apply to take part.

“YMCA Youth Parliament” written by Sienna O’Dea - Year 11

During the school holidays I was also lucky enough to participate in the YMCA Youth Parliament, a week

long residential program. Again I am most grateful to the school for assistance and support to attend this

exciting event. The program is apolitical and involves students from across NSW including public, catholic

and independent schools. The participants are split up into committee groups based on interests and pas-

sions. I was part of the Women’s Affairs Committee and we developed a 22-page bill titled the Domestic and

Personal Violence Education and Sentencing Act 2018. This bill was very close to a lot of people’s hearts and

the debate in parliament was very emotional. Our bill was the only bill which received a unanimous yes vote

and has since been tabled to the NSW Minister for Women, Tanya Davies. All the debates took part in the

Legislative Assembly of the NSW Parliament and were chaired by members of parliament. We also attended the opening ceremony in the Legislative Council and attended a reception at the Government House. I am

very lucky to have taken part in this program, I enjoyed it immensely and I strongly encourage anyone

interested in politics and public speaking/ debating to apply next year.

Archaeologists in the Making

On Tuesday, 7I was able to handle and examine objects from ancient times. The lesson involved moving

around the room to 7 different stations every 6-7 minutes to examine different artefacts Miss Vercoe had

collected in her teaching career.

The whole class was fascinated by the different artefacts. Some of them, to us, were unidentifiable. Others

were recognisable as valuable old plates from Greece and everyday items from different societies. Being in a

group to identify the different objects was quite helpful as it let us take into account other people’s ideas to

make the final decision. The activity was an engaging way to feel what it is like to be an archaeologist and the

steps involved.

“My favourite artefact was the Egyptian papyrus painting. The lesson was fun and interactive and a different

way of learning. I was also surprised that most of the artefacts were real,” states Ashley J.

Overall the activity was engaging and we learnt the uses of many different artefacts. We would love to do

another hands on lesson like this in the near future.

Journalists involved were Kiran Kaur, Russell Royal and Abrar Chowdhury.

Careers Corner with Ms Keegan

High Achievers Evening with Macquarie University

What a fantastic opportunity it was for our students and their

parents to connect with current students, academics and staff from

Macquarie University to explore the available options and advantages

associated with study at Macquarie.

A highlight of the presentations was listening to former

Hurlstone student Visnja Vlahovic speak about her decision

to enrol at Macquarie University and her rewarding and

enjoyable experience as a student there. At school Visnja was

a debater, volleyball player and vice-captain but Macquarie

really came to the rescue as she was unsure about what she

wanted to study at university. Visnja applied for the

Commerce/Psychology double degree through the Global

Leadership early entry program with unconditional entry and

received her offer before the trials which meant a lot less

stress and pressure. At Macquarie Visnja loves her degree

and finds the subjects super interesting as they challenge her

to think in different ways. Although university study requires hard work and dedication,

Visnja is enjoying her independence and loves how Macquarie promotes

students’ social lives and personal growth as well.

A parent perspective was provided by Pratima Sewak who is the mother of Shelby who was a HSC

All-rounder. Shelby lives in Panania, attended East Hills Girls High and is now in her fourth year of a Bachelor

of Law and Arts double degree majoring in Social Justice at Macquarie University. Shelby has embraced the

Macquarie Global Leadership Program and travelled to Brazil in her first year. In the beginning travel to uni

each day was a concern but as Macquarie has its own train station this has not been an issue at all. As a

proud parent, Pratima is delighted by the friendly environment, encouragement and support provided by

Macquarie University.

A very exciting announcement made by Macquarie University was the introduction of a new STEM

scholarship to be reserved specifically for a Hurlstone student in 2019. If you missed attending this fabulous

evening you can still learn more about studying at Macquarie by asking your Careers Adviser or students and

parents are welcome to attend Macquarie University Open Day on 18th August. http://openday.mq.edu.au/

Hurlstone Interact Report

The Hurlstone Interact body is a large family of students with great passion to advocate for social justice in

the world around us. Officially the largest in the Southern Hemisphere; we’ve been busy holding events since

the start of this term to raise funds and awareness on numerous social justice issues.

Birthing Kits

On the 1st of August, The INTERACT executive and student volunteers took time out of their busy school

schedules to construct Birthing kits for the Birthing Kit Foundation of Australia (https://www.bkfa.org.au/ ).

The students constructed these kits to assist families in developing countries to try to minimalise injury and

death due to preventable issues in childbirth. INTERACT is focused and committed to the ideal of “service

above self” and this is yet another example of the great work the students of Hurlstone can accomplish

through student led leadership programs.

If any students are interested in joining INTERACT they can attend meetings every Wednesday at Recess in

the Dance Studio.

World’s Greatest Shave

The Hurlstone community recently came together to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s

Greatest Shave. Following numerous setbacks, the event was held on Tuesday, the 7th of August, during the

whole school assembly.

The cut hair will be treated and then turned into wigs for children suffering from alopecia and other blood

cancer related diseases.
