Every year Farmer Joe was baffled.
![Page 15: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Why did his carrots keep dying?
R.I.P.Carrots
![Page 16: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Why didn’t they grow like they did in the good old days?
23rd march 1972
![Page 17: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Framer Joe thought it was time he went and asked farmer John.
G'day Mate!
![Page 18: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Turned out Farmer John had many problems of his own.
![Page 19: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Farmer John’s crops kept getting taken over by weeds and grasses.
?
![Page 20: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
He tried ploughing them...
![Page 21: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
But that didn’t work. So he tried poisoning them.
![Page 22: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
But that just killed his crops!
![Page 23: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
The last thing John tried was covering the field with newspaper.
![Page 24: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
=(But Famer John didn’t have enough and it
started to blow away.
![Page 25: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Then Farmer Joe had an idea. Why not ask Google?
Google.com
![Page 26: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Google was a smart man, and told them many things.
Google.com
Oooh! I see.
![Page 27: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Farmer Joe just had to use a thing called
crop rotation
![Page 28: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
In simple terms, Joe just had to grow other vegetables as well, like corn and cabbages, to make his carrots happy.
![Page 29: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
This was Crop Rotation.Every year Farmer Joe had to swap around different types of
vegetables
![Page 30: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Framer Joe set out his 4 year plan.
My Plan
![Page 31: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
One year would be his beloved carrots,
![Page 32: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Then the next year Joe could grow corn,
![Page 33: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
After that would be tomatoes,
![Page 34: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Then lastly cabbages.
![Page 35: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
Farmer Joe would repeat this plan so he would be effectively sustaining his farm.
![Page 36: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
Farmer John figured out that mulching his crops by simply buying or cutting up woodchips or covering it with a layer of other plant material, then putting it on the crop is the BEST way to grow!!
![Page 37: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
Here is Famer John’s new, nicely mulched crop! He decided to use hay/silage in order to control the weeds and grasses and put
nutrients in to the soil.
![Page 38: Sustainable farming by Isabella Molineaux & Africa Vernon Hurlstone Agricultural High School](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062813/56816687550346895dda37fc/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
To this day, Farmer Joe and Farmer John are happy farmers with their sustainably grown crops and vegetables
