PREFACE

In the Preface to Volume I of this series a plan for subsequent volumes was indicated. According to this, the whole of J evons's correspondence was to be included in two volumes, Volume II comprising letters up to 1862 and Volume III those from 1863 until 1882. A fourth volume was to contain the complete transcript of the lectures on political economy given· by Jevons at Owens College, Manchester, in 1875-6, the text of all Jevons's papers on economic subjects previously published but not collected together, and a number of other items selected to cast light on the development and reception of Jevons's economic ideas.

Volume II was published as planned in 1973, but two developments have since compelled changes in the arrangement of the later volumes. Firstly, the quantity of correspondence for the years 1863 to 1882 was increased by a number of discoveries of material outside the main collection originally made available to me by Mrs Könekamp, so that the number of letters became greater than could be contained even in one very large volume. Secondly, the great acceleration of rates of inflation since 1973 has produced rises in printing costs so large as to make it impossible for Macmillan to maintain the original size and format ofthe volumes. Hence it has proved necessary to divide the correspondence for the years 1863 to 1882 into three volumes, now numbered III, IV and V, while the material originally intended to constitute Volume IV has had to be divided over two further volumes, now numbered VI and VII.

I apologise to readers for this deviation from the plan originally published, but trust that they will recognise it as the result of circumstances largely outside my control. Although the form ofthe volumes has been altered, their content has not been reduced and all the material wh ich it was originally intended to publish will now appear in this and succeeding volumes. The complete index which it was originally stated would appear in Volume IV will now be included at the end ofVolume VII. Additionalletters which have come to light since the publication of Volume II are numbered with asuffix, e.g. '279A'. This seeminglyclumsy method of insertion has been preferred to the neater alternative of renumbering the whole sequence of correspondence, because to have done this would have upset cross-references which had already been published in Volumes I and II.

XVlll CORRESPONDENCE OF WILLIAM STANLEY JEVONS

The present volume covers correspondence during the years 1863 to 1872, years which saw the foundation ofJ evons's academic career and the beginnings ofhis national and international reputation as an economist. In the earlier part of the volume family letters still predominate, and reflect the hopes and fears about his appointment at Owens College which also found expression at this time in Jevons's personal journal. 1

Mixed with these are his feelings of elation and trepidation at finding hirnself almost overnight an authority being widely quoted in national controversies - and the contributions which Jevons made to the 'gold question' and the 'coal question' brought a 'public' element into his correspondence for the first time, as he began to exchange letters with such men as Gladstone, Bagehot and Sir John Herschel in and after 1866. There are also the beginnings of correspondence with foreign scholars, such as Etienne Laspeyres and Louis Wolowski; but from the point of view of economic theory perhaps the greatest interest attaches to the letters from FleemingJ enkin on the theory of exchange, which stimulated Jevons to give the ideas which he had sketched out in 1862 2 full expression in The Theory of Political Economy in 1871.

In the Prefaces to Volumes land 11 I have acknowledged some ofthe debts which I have accumulated for help in the process of editing these papers. Since that time their sum has been greatly increased, both by further help from those patient and helpful friends and colleagues who had often aided me before and by new help from many others. My Research Officer, MrsJ. Wright, has throughout been my main source of assistance in searching for material and locating references; without her expert knowledge and continuing interest what has proved a lengthy process must inevitably have been much longer. For much hard work in the process of typing the complex and va ried manuscripts from which these volumes have been compiled I am grateful to Mrs P. Finn.

For help in locating and identifying material published in this and subsequent volumes my thanks are due particularly to Professor Craufurd D. Goodwin ofDuke University and Miss Mary Canada, Reference Librarian of Duke University Library, who provided biographical information about D. M. Balfour and assisted with other American references, as did Dr Kenneth Carpenter, Librarian ofthe Kress Library at Harvard University; to Professor R. H.
