The international paper size standard, IS O 216, is based on the G erm an D IN 476 standard fur paper sizes.
IS O paper sizes are all b ased on a single aspect ratio of square root of2, or approxim ately 1 :1.4142. The base
AO size of paper is defined to have an area of one m'. W ith the given aspect ratio of square root of tw o , this
corresponds to a piece of paper w ith a longer side of one m etre m uhiplied by the square root o f the square root

T he m ain disadvantage of the system is type does not scale the sam e w ay; therefure, w hen a page is resized , the

S o, B1 is betw eenA O and A l in size , with an area of 0 .707 nf
( " ' - 1 0 . 5 ) . As a result, B O is 1 m etre w ide, and other sizes in the B
series are a halt: a quarter or further fractions of a m etre w ide. W hile

M any posters use B -series paper or a close approxim ation , such as
50 cmx70 cm ; B5 is a relatively com mon choice fur books. T he B

T he C series is u sed o nly fu r en velo pes an d is defined in IS O 269.
The area ofC series sheets is the geom etric m ean of the areas of th e
A and B series sheets of the sam e m nnber; fur instance, the area ofa
C 4 sheet is the geom etric m ean of the areas of an A 4 sheet and a B4
sheet. This m eans that C 4 is slig htly la rg er th an A 4, an d B 4 s lig htly
larg er th an C 4. T he p ractical u sag e o f th is is th at a le tter w ritte n o nA 4
paper : f i t s inside a C 4 envelope, and a C4 envelope : f i t s inside a B 4

Swedish extensions
The S wedish standard S IS 014711 generalized the ISO system of A , B , and C formats by adding D , E , F, and

21116 from one size to the next. How ever, the S IS 014711 standard does not define any size betw een a D
form at and the next larger A form at (called H in the previous exam ple). O f these additional form ats, G 5 (169 x
239 nm ) and E5 (155 x 220 nm ) are popular in Sweden for prin ting dissertations,[citation needed] but th e other
form ats h av e no t tu rned o ut to b e particularly u sefu l in p ractice and th ey hav e n ot been ado pted intern atio nally .
Japanese B-series variant
T he JIS defines tw o m ain series of paper sizes. T he JIS A -series is identical to the IS O A -series, but w iths l ight ly di ffe rent to le rances. The area o fB -series p aper is 1.5 tim es th at o f th e correspo nd ing A -pap er (in stead
of th e facto r 1.4 14 ... fo r the IS O B -series), so th e len gth ratio is ap pro xim ately 1.22 tim es the len gth of the

corresponding A-series paper. The aspect ratio of the paper is the same
as for A-series paper. Both A- and B-series paper is widely available in
Japan, Taiwan and China, and most photocopiers are loaded with at least
A4 and either one ofA3, B4 and B5 paper.
There are also a number of traditional paper sizes, which are now usedmostly only by printers. The most common of these old series are the
Shiroku-ban and the Kiku paper sizes.

b elow. ''L ette r'', " le ga l" , ''le dg er '', a nd ''ta blo id '' a re b y fa r the m ost com monly used of these fur everyday
a ctiv itie s. T he o rig in s o f th e e xa ct dimensions of ,'lette r" size p ap er (8 ~ x 11 in or 215.9 x 279.4 mm) a re lo st
in tradit ion and n ot w ell documented. T he Am eric an F ore st and P ape r A ssoc ia tion a rg ue s th at th e dimension
originates from the days of m anual paper m aking, and that the 11 inch length of the page is about a quarter of
' 'the average maximum stretch of an experienced vatm an's arm s. ,,[2] However, this does not explain the w idth or
aspect ratio . O utside of N orth America, L etter size is also know n as "American Quarto,,[3] and the size is indeed
ahnost exactly a quarter of the old Im perial (B ritish) paper size know n as D em y 4to (17W'x22W~, allowing W'
fu r trimming.[4]

There is an additional paper size, to w hich the nam e "goverm nent-letter" w as given by the IEE E Printer W orking
Group: the 8 x 1O ~ in (203.2 x 266.7 mm) paper that is used in the U nited S tates and Canada fur children 'swriting. Itwas prescribed by Herbert Hoover when he was Secretary ofConmerce to be used for U .S .
goverm nent form s, apparently to enable discounts from the purchase of paper fur schools. In later years, as
photocopy m achines proliferated, citizens w anted to m ake photocopies of the form s, but the m achines did not
g ene ra ll y have this size paper in their bins. R onald R eagan therefore had the U .S . goverm nent sw itch to regu1ar
le tte r s iz e (8 ~ x 11 inl215.9 x 279.4 mm)_[2] The 8 x 10~ in (203.2 x 266.7 mm) size is s ti ll c ommonly u sed
in spiral-bound notebooks and the like.
U .S . paper sizes are current1y standard in the U nited S tates, the Philippines and C hile. The latter tw o use U .S .
" le tte r" , b ut th e P hilip pin e a nd Chile an " le ga l" siz e is 8~ x 13 in (215.9 x 330.2 mm).[6] IS O siz es a re a vaila ble,
but not w ide1y used, in both th e U.S . and the Ph i lippines .
In Canada, U .S . paper sizes are a de facto standard. The goverm nent, however, uses a com bination onso
p ap er siz es, and C AN 2-9.60M ''Paper S izes fur C orrespondence" specifies PI throughP6 paper sizes, w hich
are the U . S . paper sizes rounded to the nearest 5 rmn. [7 ]
M exico has adopted the IS O standard, but U .S . "letter" furmat is still th e sy stem in use th ro ug hou t the c oun try.

In 1996, the A merican N ational S tandards Institute adopted A NS IIA SM E Y 14.1 w hich defined a regular series

In addition to the A NS I system as listed above, there is a corresponding series of paper sizes used fur
a rchi tec tura l purposes . This system has also been adapted by the enterta inm ent industry fur the purposes of
enter ta inment drafting. This series also shares the pro perty th at b isectin g each size p ro du ces tw o o f th e size
below .[9] It m ay be preferred by N orth A merican architects because the aspect ratios (4 :3 and 3:2) are ratios of

The sizes listed above are fur paper sold 100se1y in rerum . There are m any sizes of tablets of paper, that is ,
sheets of paper bound at one edge, usua11yby a strip of plastic o r hardened PV A adhesive. O ften there is a pad
of cardboard (also know n as ch ipboard or greyboard) at the bottom of the stack. S uch a tablet serves as a
portable writing surface, and the sheets often have lines printed on them , usua11yin blue, to m ake writing in a line
easier. Ano ld er m ea ns o f b in din g is to have the sheets stap led to the cardboard along the top of the tablet; there
is a line of perfurated ho les across every page just be10w the top edge from w hich any page m ay be tom off
Last1y, a pad of sheets each w eak1y stuck w ith adhesive to the sheet be1ow , tradem arked as ''P ost-It'' or "S tick -
E m" and available in various sizes, serve as a sort of tablet.
''L etter pads" are 8 Y 2,by 11 inches (215.9 by 279.4 m m), w hile the term ''legal pad" is often used by laym en to
refer to pads of various sizes including those of8Y 2, by 14 inches (215.9 by 355.6 m m). T here are "steno pads"
(used by stenographers) o f6 by9 inches (152.4 by228.6 m m).
In countries w here the IS O sizes are standard, m ost notebooks and tablets are sized to IS O specifications (fur
exam ple, m ost new sagents in A ustralia stock A 4 and A 3 tablets).
Traditional inch-based paper sizes
T raditiona11y, a m nnber of different sizes w ere defined fur large sheets of paper, and pap er sizes w ere defined by
the sheet nam e and the num ber of tim es it had been fulded . Thus a full sheet of ,'royal" paper w as 25 x 20
inches , and ''r oya lo c tavo''was this size fo lded three tim es, so as to m ake eight sheets, and w as thus 10 by6Y 4
inches.

Demitab
The dem itab or dem i-tab (from the French "dem i" or ha1ftabloid) is 5 .5 x 8.5 in (140 x 216 nnn), equal to
one quarter of a sheet of 11 x 17 in (279 x 432 nnn) tablo id size paper. Ina ct ua l c ir cu la ti on , t he s iz e
8 x 10.5 in (203 x 267 nnn) is common fur a dem itab'p4] Tab lo id n ew sp ap ers , w h ic h a re " ge ne ra lly h a1 fth e
size ofa broadsheet", also vary in size. To add to the lack of uniformity, bro ad sheets also v ary in size .
M ost ind ustry stan dards exp ress th e d irection of the grain last (e.g. 17x 11 is short grain paper and 11 x 17 is

Transitional paper sizes
PA series
A transitional size called PA 4 (210 x 280 m m/8.27 x 11.02 in) w as proposed fur inclusion in to the IS O 216
stan dard in 1 97 5. Ithas the height of Canadian P4 paper (215 nnn x 280 nnn, about 8 Y 2 in x 11 in) and the
w idth ofinternationalA 4 paper (210 x 297 m m/8.27 x 11.69 in). The table to the right, sho ws h ow this format
can b e g en era liz ed in to an en tire fu nn at se ries.
The P A form ats did not end up in IS O 216, because the corm nittee feh that the set of standardized paper
form ats should be kept to the minirmnn necessary. H ow ev er, P A 4 rem ains o f practical use to day. Inlandscape
orientation, ithas the sam e 4:3 aspect ratio as the disp lays of traditional T V sets, som e com puter d isplays and
d ata p ro jecto rs. P A4 , with app rop riate m arg in s, is therefure a g oo d ch oice as th e fo rm at of p resentatio n slides.
P A 4 is also a usefu l com prom ise betw een A 4 and U S /C anadian Letter sizes. H ence it is used today by m any
int er nat ional magazines , be cause it can be prin ted easily on equipm ent designed fur either A 4 or U S L etter.

publication is redesigned to print using a n arrow er (and less expensiv e) roll of paper. In e xtreme e xamp le s, so mebroadsheet papers are near1y as narrow as traditional tabloids. A n average roll of26.4lb (43 gsm ), 45 in
(11 0 cm ) diam eter new sprint rolled out is 9.7 m i (15.6 km ) long.
