Why did we select this topic?
The daily waste is specific and in limited types
which makes the separation process very easy.
The sufficient awareness among students for the
importance of solid waste management.
The university society is relatively a large society
so the amount of waste is relatively large.
Survey:
A sample of 50 students were subjected to a
survey of only two questions:
Do you encourage the process of waste
separation and treatment?
72 % said yes, 18 % said they don’t care, and
10% said no.
Will you always drop the waste in the
designated place?
86 % said yes, and 14% said not always.
What categories of waste do we have?
Hot drinks paper cups.
Sandwich packaging paper.
Cola tin cans.
Soft drink plastic bottle.
Nylon bags.
Other waste with small quantities.
What amount of waste do we have?
8000 of hot drinks paper cups daily (4 Tons
per yr).
20 kg of sandwiches packaging papers (4.5
Ton per yr).
1700 of cola cans daily (5.2 Tons per yr).
1500 of plastic bottles daily (6.6 Tons per yr).
18 kg of nylon bags daily (3.9 Tons per yr).
Waste paper cup management
Because of the statistics we chose to deal
paper cups in our project.
Our project is a modern “waste paper cup
management” , by a mostly computerized
processes.
Waste cup management system
Collecting
“Smart container”Separation
Waste coffee and tea
Caffeine extraction
Waste water to nearest local water treatment station

reuse
Energy generation
“burn”
Waste treatment:We end up with empty paper cups, and for that we
have 3 options:
1. Reuse of paper cups.
2. Recycle.
3. Regenerate.
Reuse:After being washed the paper cups can now be
reused for the same purpose after being treated
with polyethylene inside the cups, and sterilized.
Recycle:
The cups are mainly made of carton, they can
be sent to carton manufacturers to be used as
raw material for the production of different kinds
of carton by simple procedures.
Regenerate:We have 4 tons of paper cups per year produced, another way
of taking advantage of that much cups is to use them to
generate power, that is by burning them in a furnace along with
the sandwich wrapping papers (4.5 Tons) to produce heat of by
the use of steam generators generate electricity because the
heat value of this waste is considered to be in good amount.
Recommendations:We highly recommend that special recycle bins to be put
all around to campus to collect this waste of all kinds, the
glass can be sold to glass factories, plastic bottles can be
sold as well, also cola cans can be used by tin factories
and finally the paper cups and sandwich wrapping papers
can be used for many purposes including heat
generations. A treatment facility at ANU should be
established to help collect and distribute the waste to
accomplish maximum profit of the waste management.
